The internet was ablaze Monday with the news that Lea Michele once gave an anatomy lesson to her “Spring Awakening” and “Glee” co-star Jonathan Groff using a desk lamp.
The two close friends disclose the intimate story in the upcoming HBO documentary, “Spring Awakening: Those You’ve Known,” which revisits the groundbreaking musical through the lens of a 15th anniversary concert that reunited the entire cast, many of whom have gone on to have fruitful careers since the show — Tony nominee Lilli Cooper, “Pitch Perfect” star Skylar Astin and Krysta Rodriguez from “Smash” are among them.

I saw "Spring Awakening" on Broadway for the first time on December 5, 2007, just about a year after the off-Broadway production transferred to the Eugene O'Neill Theatre. Alongside a small group of girls, I was invited by a friend to celebrate her birthday at the show. And I had no idea when we took our seats that night that my life would be changed forever by what I was about to witness. Fifteen shows later over the course of two years, I had a pretty good idea. That's the level of passion Duncan Sheik and Steven Sater's coming-of-age rock musical set...

According to the combined predictions of Gold Derby’s users as of this writing, “Les Misérables: The Staged Concert” is the front-runner to win Best Musical Theater Album at this year’s Grammy Awards with 11/2 odds. Recordings of the classic musical have previously received two Grammy nominations in this category, winning on both bids: first in 1988 for the original Broadway cast recording, and then in 1991 for the complete symphonic recording. However, I think we might be underestimating “Girl From the North Country.”
In 2015 most of our users were predicting the original Broadway cast recording of “Hedwig and the Angry Inch” to prevail, yet “Beautiful” managed to beat it. The latter musical centered on the early career of legendary singer/songwriter Carole King, who has earned nine competitive Grammy nominations with four wins in her career. So its cast album was filled with songs voters had been familiar with for decades.

A Tony Award- and Pulitzer Prize-winning Broadway success known for musicals including High Fidelity and Next to Normal, Tom Kitt has over the past several years followed his passion for the world of film and television, making inroads on projects including Pitch Perfect and Penny Dreadful before finding a very personal role as music director of NBC’s drama Rise.
Having scored Broadway musicals and performed a great deal himself—with vivid memories of his own high school musical experiences—Kitt was the perfect fit to help facilitate this series about a working-class high school’s drama department, starring Josh Radnor and Moana‘s Auli’i Cravalho in her first live-action role. Just before the final preview of New York Animals last night, Eric Tucker, the show’s director, warned the audience that the “glamorous and exacting” play about to begin was still being rewritten, reworked, and even recast. This seemed odd for a piece that had been in development for many years. The playwright Steven Sater’s first version of it, with four actors and no songs, was written in the early 2000s, before his immense success as the librettist for Spring Awakening in 2006. He then reconceived the material as a television series for FX; a pilot and six episodes were written but never aired. In 2010, a three-week workshop in Los Angeles developed the play further, but plans for a full production were scrapped. When it next popped up, New York Animals had not only acquired a berth in the current season of the much-praised Bedlam Theatre here, but had grown...

None of them, however, goes to a mental institution, the route that Natalie Wood takes in “Splendor in the Grass,” my personal favorite of the genre, because she refuses to have sex with Warren Beatty. Crazy, indeed. “Spring Awakening,” the Tony-winning 2006 musical by Steven Sater and Duncan Sheik, is just as unsubtle as the Wedekind play and “Splendor.

Today in 2006, Spring Awakening opened at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre, where it ran for 859 performances. Spring Awakening is a rock musical with music by Duncan Sheik and a book and lyrics by Steven Sater. It is based on the controversial German play Spring Awakening 1891 by Frank Wedekind which was banned in Germany for some time due to its frank portrayal of abortion, homosexuality, rape, child abuse and suicide. Set in late-19th century Germany, the musical tells the story of teenagers discovering the inner and outer tumult of sexuality. In the musical, alternative rock is employed as part of the folk-infused rock score. The original Broadway production won 8 Tony Awards, including Tonys for Best Musical, Direction, Book, Score and Featured Actor. The production also garnered 4 Drama Desk Awards whilst its original cast album received a Grammy Award.
