As movies like Bone Tomahawk and Tremors 4 have proven, horror and Westerns are two great tastes that taste great together. I always like to hear that another horror / Western blend is in the works – so I was glad to see The Hollywood Reporter announce that the folk horror thriller The Wolf and the Lamb, which is set “during the western expansion of the 1870s,” is coming our way. Cassandra Scerbo of the Sharknado franchise and Adrianne Palicki of The Orville star in the film, which is currently in production, with filming taking place in Montana.
The Wolf and the Lamb marks the feature writing and directing debut of Michael Schilf. Scerbo is taking on the role of a widowed school teacher searching for her only son, who is the latest child to go missing in a tight-knit mining camp. But when the son miraculously returns, he is more monster than man.

Taylor Sheridan’s dedication to authenticity is unmatched, and he proved just how far he was willing to go for his art during the filming of a scene for his Yellowstone prequel series titled 1883. He actually risked a lot for this 2021 miniseries starring Sam Elliott & Tim McGraw to capture a pivotal scene, adding an unparalleled layer of authenticity to the gripping tale.
A still from Yellowstone, directed by Taylor Sheridan
The genius behind the cultural phenomenon of Yellowstone has not only given us a riveting portrayal of the Dutton family’s legacy, with coming attractions like the sequel show tentatively named 2024 but also two enthralling prequels—1883 and 1923.
Earlier this year, in an appearance on the Joe Rogan Experience, Sheridan shared some fascinating insights into the real history of the Wild West in the late 1800s that served as the inspiration for 1883.

True to its lineage as part of the Dutton-verse, Yellowstone prequel 1883 delivered a big audience for the start of its cable run.
The Paramount+ series, which premiered in late 2021, is getting a full-season run on Paramount Network over the summer, and it drew a lot of eyeballs for its June 18 debut on the cable outlet. The two-episode premiere drew 3.8 million viewers on its first night, including replays and simulcasts on five other Paramount Global cable channels. The two episodes on Paramount Network averaged 1.52 million viewers, and simulcasts on Comedy Central, CMT, MTV, Pop and TV Land added about a million more to each episode. Replays contributed the rest.
That’s a strong showing, particularly considering that 1883 has been available to stream in its entirety for more than a year. In fact, were it a new series, it would be the most watched scripted debut on cable since The Walking Dead: World Beyond...

Grassroots campaigning has its place — even in the Oscar race.
There was a collective gasp across Hollywood this week when Andrea Riseborough was nominated for best actress for her performance in To Leslie, an indie movie that many haven’t heard of despite rave reviews.
The Canadian-based Momentum Pictures acquired To Leslie out of the 2022 edition of South by Southwest. The film was given a limited theatrical release in North America and the U.K. in October 2022, but it did nominal business. It was also made available on premium VOD.
Now, however, cinema owners are asking Momentum if they might have another go. The micro-distributor, which is a division of Entertainment One, will play To Leslie in approximately six theaters in North America this weekend, according a person familiar with the plan. The following week, the movie is expected to be made available in select U.K. theaters.

"But you don't gotta worry about me, because, despite your best effort I ain't going nowhere." Momentum Pictures has revealed an official trailer for an indie drama titled To Leslie, marking the feature film debut of TV director Michael Morris. This already premiered at the 2022 SXSW Film Festival earlier this year, and will be out in October on VOD to watch. Years after a lottery win, a West Texas single mother is alone, living hard at the bottom of a bottle. Nowhere left to go, she is forced to come home and confront her past. She fights to rebuild her life and find redemption in a place that doesn't want her back. This sounds like a very Texas film in every way. Starring Andrea Riseborough as Leslie, with Allison Janney, Marc Maron, Stephen Root, Owen Teague, Matt Lauria, James Landry Hébert, & Andre Royo. This looks quite good, Riseborough clearly the best part about it,...

Exclusive: Gratiela Brancusi, the Romanian actress who recently found her first major role in Taylor Sheridan’s 1883, has signed with Elevate Entertainment for management in all areas.
Paramount+’s Western drama is a prequel to the hit Paramount Network series Yellowstone that follows the Dutton rancher family on a journey west through the Great Plains toward the last bastion of uncolonized America. Brancusi stars alongside Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, Sam Elliott, Isabel May, Lamonica Garrett, Marc Rissmann, Audie Rick, Eric Nelsen, James Landry Hébert and more. She plays Noemi, a Romani widow who is forced to raise two young boys on her own following the loss of her husband, coming to depend on, and develop a romantic interest in, Garrett’s Pinkerton agent Thomas.
The relative newcomer’s role in the show, which premiered in December, wound up being a major one, with Brancusi featuring in the majority of its 10-episode first season.

1883 Episode 10
Near the conclusion of this 1883 season 1 finale, the great Graham Greene’s newly-introduced character, Spotted Eagle, tells Tim McGraw’s hero of the story, James Dutton, that James looks “like a man who plans”.
There’s a reason 1883’s creator, Taylor Sheridan often writes about these steadfast characters born of an era where a man’s love of his family and his land was everything. There’s a reason why Sheridan always has the Dutton family typically one step ahead of their rivals. It’s because good writers write what they know. Good writers… write about themselves.
It is crystal clear that Sheridan has always had a plan for 1883, and it has been evident from the very first episode. Fans who will go back to the premiere now that the season is complete will pick up on hints and foreshadowing Sheridan left that are...

1883 Episode 9
Taylor Sheridan clearly came in with a plan of attack for the debut season of his prequel, 1883. The pacing throughout this batch of episodes has been a carefully crafted ride, swooping up hills, dipping into valleys, coupled with a great balance of character development, shootouts, and old-West chaos to keep any audience member entertained. A major component of that ride has been the season-long mystery of what will become of Dutton-daughter Elsa (Isabel May).
In the season premiere, audiences were witnesses to the show’s golden-haired heart shot through the belly with a Lacota arrow in a horrific attack on her group of pioneers. That scene, literally a fiery introduction to the motifs of the show, conveyed the death and danger that would become characters of their own throughout the 9 episodes so far, but it left many questions. How did this happen? When does this scene fit into the timeline?...

As Taylor Sheridan’s “Yellowstone” universe expands, so does its audience. After “Yellowstone’s” Season 4 premiere in November soared to 14.7 million viewers — an impressive feat in today’s bleak linear TV landscape — “1883,” the neo-western prequel, had the biggest new series premiere on cable since 2015.
The MTV Entertainment Studios and 101 Studios production’s “sampler special” drew 4.9 million viewers on Paramount Network following a new episode of its Emmy-nominated predecessor. The first two episodes of the prequel will be broadcast on cable after “Yellowstone” on Sunday nights, but all other episodes will be exclusively on the re-branded ViacomCBS streamer.
In addition, “1883” broke ground as Paramount Plus’ most-watched original series premiere ever following its debut this past Sunday. The stark retelling of Western expansion in America’s promised land was also the No. 1 most social streaming drama series per data from Talkwalker Social Content Ratings. All in all, a happy...

The Sunday premiere of the Yellowstone prequel, 1883, set a new record as Paramount+ most watched original series premiere, more than doubling the previous viewership record across the service’s owned and operated platforms, with additional third party reporting still to come, the ViacomCBS streaming platform said without providing any ratings data.
Supporting the company’s claim for 1883‘s big debut on Paramount+ over the first 24 hours of release is the delivery of the premiere’s airing behind Yellowstone on Paramount Network. The promotional linear telecast drew strong 4.9 million total viewers in Live+Same Day, according to Nielsen, making it the biggest new series premiere on cable since 2015.

"You'd be surprised what people can do..." Redbox has unveiled an official trailer for the indie film The Last Son, a western thriller from filmmaker Tim Sutton who is known for his low key indie films previously - Memphis, Dark Knight, Donnybrook, Funny Face. In this one, an outlaw attempts to end his evil family line. Sam Worthington stars as Isaac LeMay, a murderous outlaw cursed by a terrible prophecy, hunting down his offspring to prevent his own death before targeting his son. Shot entirely on location in Montana, "The Last Son truly portrays the brutality that was the West in the 19th century." The cast includes Thomas Jane, Colson Baker (aka "Machine Gun Kelly"), Heather Graham, Kim DeLonghi, Scotty Bohnen, Danny Bohnen, and James Landry Hébert. It actually looks a bit better than expected, more cinematic than Sutton's last features. A violent western with a grizzled Worthington ready to take on everyone alone.

"All we need is five minutes alone in that vault." Freestyle Digital Media has released an official trailer for action comedy heist film Carter & June, the latest from producer / director Nicholas Kalikow (Concrete Blondes). This dark comedy, action crime thriller mainly features "inventive blackmail schemes, flamboyant gangsters, power politics, greed, evangelicals and sex," which sounds like fun. The cast features Samaire Armstrong as June, and Michael Raymond-James as Carter, and also includes Timothy Omundson, James Landry Hébert, Paul Rae, Lindsay Musil, and Will Beinbrink. This doesn't look as good as I was expecting, but it does have some offbeat humor to offer. Not for me, but may be for you, give it a watch. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Nicholas Kalikow's Carter & June, direct from YouTube: Only described as: "Do the job. Get the money. Get the girl. Get the kid. Simple, right?" Inventive blackmail schemes, flamboyant gangsters,...

She can tell a killer joke, but don't let her sense of humor fool you, because Ashley Bell's unhinged character is quite deadly in Mickey Keating's new movie. Following a December theatrical release (including a screening that featured a Q&A hosted by our own Heather Wixson), Psychopaths will be unleashed on VOD beginning January 2nd by Samuel Goldwyn Films, and we've been provided with an exclusive clip featuring Bell's character, Alice, to share with Daily Dead readers.
Get a look at Ashley Bell's polite yet perilous role of Alice in the exclusive clip below (this is one character you don't want to upset), and in case you missed it, read our own Patrick Bromley's Cinepocalypse review of Psychopaths.
Synopsis: "The paths of multiple serial killers cross over one single, blood soaked night. Which psychopath will survive through to morning? Follow the soul of a recently executed serial killer...

It’s hard to reject a film as having no substance when its narrator apologizes for that very fact. Was its hollowness therefore an intentional commentary on the empty nihilistic void that we call life or was the filmmaker throwing us for a “meta” loop with a tongue-in-cheek laugh that knowingly commends our having sat through it in its entirety nonetheless? In this vein Mickey Keating’s Psychopaths could be profound or worthless. It could be a full-fledged movie that seeks to entertain in its gratuity or a feature length experiment with kill shots and psychedelic filters to be used in subsequent projects containing a bit more meat on their bones. You can like it or hate it or — like me — appreciate the ride despite its lack of reward.
I’m the latter because I must applaud Keating for making me believe something was coming, some purposeful “a-ha” moment transcending...
