It was a little more than a decade ago when Nigerian movies were considered laughter gags because of how ridiculously bad everything about them was. From painful dialogue, tremendously poor CGI, and acting that makes you laugh at the hilariousness of the movie, Nigerian films or African action/thrillers in general would hardly be taken seriously. However, Donovan Marsh’s 2023 action thriller iNumber Number: Jozi Gold knows exactly what to deliver and how to appeal to an audience that’s used to Hollywood-level action. Starring his usual cast of Clementine Mosimane, S’Dumo Mtshali, Presley Chweneyagae, Fana Mokoena, Deon Lotz, Noxolo Dlamini, and others, it tells the story of two South African men who grew up in the same orphanage and went into the policing line. Moshoeshoe, aka Shoes, and Chili Ngcobo continuously fail to do anything substantial because of the raging corruption in the high ranks and the administratively suffering condition of the country.

Exclusive: Hot SXSW title Number 37, a Hitchcockian South African crime thriller, is heading to theaters in the U.S. after Dark Star Pictures picked up all North American rights.
The film, which is the directorial debut of Nosipho Dumisa, is to get a fall theatrical release, starting in New York and L.A., followed by an early winter video-on-demand release.
Number 37, which started out as a short film before picking up steam after the festival route, aired as part of the Narrative Feature section at the Austin fest earlier this year.
The plot of the Afrikaans-language pic is an homage to Hitchcock’s Rear Window and centers on Randall, a low-level criminal recently crippled in an illicit deal gone wrong. Cooped up in his apartment in a rough Cape Town neighborhood, he is heavily indebted to a loan shark named Emmie with the clock ticking for him and his girlfriend...

Yasuomi Umetsu’s (chief animator for Arms Corporation who has also worked as a designer on Akira, Spriggan, Elfen Lied and Casshern) original anime Kite was, when first released in 1998, a highly controversial graphic story of hard, gory action and illicit eroticism. Banned in certain countries across the globe due to its scenes of rape and revenge, in Japan it has sold nearly a million DVD units. It has also been released in Korea, Australia, New Zealand, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Russian, Czech Republic, Slovakia and the United States – where it remains popular; yet the original Ova and its sequel, have never had a UK release. In fact this Us film adaptation is the first time the franchise has been legitimately available in this country.

Go Fly One: Ziman’s Anime Adaptation a Denuded, Unnecessary Endeavor
Those familiar with Yasuomi Umetsu’s 1998 fifty minute anime of the same name will be sorely disappointed in Ralph Ziman’s modernized update of the controversial Kite. But a faithful, live action rendition would have crossed the boundaries and limits of what defines exploitation cinema since we’re talking about an orphaned school girl sex slave assassin. A more fitting nod came from Quentin Tarantino, who culled the origin tangent of O-Ren Ishii in Kill Bill from Umetsu, in an anime sequence deemed too violent for live action. While a faithful adaptation would have seemed gratuitous, this end product is unable to elicit any kind of response at all, feeling utterly uninspired in look, tone, or content.

Film: "Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom"; Cast: Idris Elba, Deon Lotz, Naomie Harris and Terry Pheto; Director: Justin Chadwick; Rating: ***
Based on Nelson Mandela's 1995 eponymous autobiography, the film showcases snatches of Mandela's life in an episodic-cum-documentary manner - as a lawyer, anti-apartheid revolutionary, politician-cum-activist who was elected the president of South Africa in 1994.
What the film misses out is his third marriage to Graca Machel and his last days.
Laden with dramatically cliched and generic rousing scenes, director Justin Chadwick's "Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom", set against the backdrop.

Producer Anant Singh started communications with Mandela about a film based on his life while he was still in prison, and acquired film rights to the book at the time of its 1996 publication. The long-gestating project eventually signed Oscar nominee William Nicholson ("Les...

At the end of a bumper year for film-making, Guardian film critic Peter Bradshaw unveils the contenders for his very own – imaginary – film awards
Most critics compile year-end roundups in a mood of shrugging acceptance that not every year can be great. But actually 2012 has been vintage, with some really brilliant films from the biggest names doing their best work – and some fascinating documentaries. So once again, I have created my imaginary awards nominations in the following categories: best film, best director, best actor, best actress, best supporting actor, best supporting actress, best documentary and best screenplay. You will have to imagine me, in full tuxedo-style evening wear announcing the Braddies at the Dorchester. (I have put Seth MacFarlane, Michael Haneke and Kylie Minogue on my table.)
So, the nominations are …
Best film
Amour (dir. Michael Haneke)
The Master (dir. Paul Thomas Anderson)
Holy Motors (dir. Leos Carax)
Killing Them Softly (dir.

I'm appreciating the wave of black South African genre films we've seen in recent years, from How To Steal 2 Million to today's feature, Black South-Easter, which like the former is also a crime thriller, and everything else between. Black South-Easter is an upcoming South African crime thriller starring Tony Kgoroge, Fana Mokoena, Yu Nan, Deon Lotz, Thomas Gumede and Zolani Mahola, directed by Carey McKenzie and produced by Tendeka Matatu. Here's its synopsis: As the annual “Black South-Easters” blow dark clouds over Table Mountain, bringing storms to Cape Town, the ill winds of corruption blow through the city’s townships. In a...

Beauty
Written and directed by Oliver Hermanus
France/South Africa, 2011
From across the room, François (Deon Lotz) witnesses a paragon of unequivocal beauty. With a painstaking allure and an irresistible smile, François is immediately, and unmistakably, enamored beyond all control. To him, this is love at first sight.
Already married, François approaches his extramarital muse with extreme caution, and, striking up an innocent conversation, tries to ingratiate himself. As the obligatory ice begins to break, François finds himself at greater ease, but deep inside the glacial façade of his exterior, dwells a suppressed fire of volatile proportions.
François is the subject of Oliver Hermanus’ Beauty*, a case study of an Afrikaans-speaking white man living in South Africa. In his mid-40’s, and married with kids, he is the prototypical average Joe, but unbeknownst to his family, François houses a deep-seated secret – he is gay.
Perpetually repressed, his inner demons manifests in wild ambivalence.

Alan Paton followed up Cry, the Beloved Country, his prophetic 1948 bestseller published on the eve of apartheid, with the lesser known Too Late the Phalarope, the tragic story of an Afrikaner police officer prosecuted under the Immorality Act after succumbing to his desire for a young black woman. Set in present-day South Africa, Beauty follows a similar pattern by challenging another barrier of prejudice. Its transgressive protagonist, François (impressively played by Deon Lotz), is a dull, long-married Boer running a timber business in Bloemfontein. Racially prejudiced and in denial over his sexuality, he starts stalking a handsome young lawyer in Cape Town. But before this he engages with equally suppressed friends in brutal homosexual orgies in the countryside. This is Death in Venice African-style, though lacking the reticence and resonance of Mann's novella. Presumably it's commenting on an emotionally distorted society that needs to get its house in order.

Marley (15)
(Kevin Macdonald, 2012, Us/UK) 145 mins
Authoritative to the point of exhausting, Macdonald's documentary compiles an awesome amount of footage, photos, interviews, etc – but then it's a big subject. Whether you really get to the man beyond the legend is debatable (this was made with Marley family backing), but there's much here you've never seen, from Bob's Rasta roots to his kick-around in London's Battersea Park.
Salmon Fishing In The Yemen (12A)
(Lasse Hallström, 2012, UK) Ewan McGregor, Emily Blunt. 106 mins
An incongruous setting for a mushy fish-out-of-water romcom, with Blunt and her sheikh boss lured by McGregor's tackle.
Elles (18)
(Malgorzata Szumowska, 2011, Fra/Pol/Ger) Juliette Binoche, Anaïs Demoustier. 99 mins
Empowerment and eroticism mix uneasily when Binoche's enquiries into student prostitution affect her own life.
Irvine Welsh's Ecstasy (18)
(Rob Heydon, 2011, Can) Adam Sinclair, Kristin Kreuk, Billy Boyd. 99 mins
Rave-era yarn that's 15 years too late to be the Trainspotting of Mdma it wants to be.

Deon Lotz gives a ferociously powerful central performance in this tragic South African movie
A ferociously powerful, yet subtle and complex performance from Deon Lotz is at the centre of this South African-set movie. He plays François, a middle-aged white Afrikaaner family man. François has a secret passion that he regularly indulges with like-minded white guys, but which brings him to a terrible crisis. I have some misgivings about the ending of this film, which is of a recognisable arthouse type, but its power and intensity, and the way Hermanus controls the movie's emotional weather, are impressive. Lotz gives the story a tragic dimension.

In search of Beauty
A chance encounter between married, middle aged businessman François and the handsome young son of a friend is the prelude to a tale of dangerous obsession in Oliver Hermanus' award winning film, Beauty. Winner of the Queer Palm at Cannes 2011, a disturbing and provocative examination of one man's damaging self-hatred.
François (Deon Lotz) is a respectable, middle aged South African man with a wife, two lovely daughters, a big house and a thriving lumber business. He's not like those fags. Even the group of other straight men with whom he meets up to have sex has a no fags rule. Life isn't perfect but it's working out. Until he meets Christian (Charlie Keegan), the son of an old friend, and is suddenly overwhelmed by feelings that are about much more than physical desire. Thrown off...

High time to round up the films at this year's Cannes Film Festival that never saw entries of their own and send them on their way. Today: Un Certain Regard.
"Bakur Bakuradze's The Hunter seems like a ficticious version of Raymond Depardon's Modern Life, a trilogy on farming that was screened in Cannes in 2008," finds Moritz Pfeifer, who also interviews the director for the East European Film Bulletin. "With no soundtrack, no professional actors, little dialogue and a minimalist plot, the film depicts the daily life of Ivan (Mikhail Barskovich) as he peacefully runs his pig farm in one of the less populous areas of northwestern Russia…. Clearly, Bakuradze wants to depict an alternative world, and the spirit of his film is more utopian than its hyper-realistic images suggest."
Grumbles the Hollywood Reporter's Kirk Honeycutt: "There is maybe 10 to 15 minutes of actual story located within this 124 minute slog,...

Deon Lotz, Charlie Keegan, Skoonheid / Beauty Oliver Hermanus' South African drama Skoonheid / Beauty, reportedly the first Afrikaans-language film to be screened at the Cannes Film Festival, won the Queer Palm, given to the best Cannes film dealing with what some like to call "queer" — i.e., gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender — issues. Skoonheid was presented in the Un Certain Regard sidebar. In the film, a married, middle-aged South African man (Deon Lotz) is forced to confront his latent homosexuality after he becomes obsessed with the 23-year-old son (Charlie Keegan) of a friend. Come to think of it, let me rephrase that: [...]...
