I’m beginning to think that, cinematically at least, the Wendigo hit its peak back in 1995 with Frostbiter: Wrath of the Wendigo, an absolutely batshit mix of folklore, Evil Dead-style mayhem, and stop-motion monsters. Despite some decent films on the subject like The Retreat there’s yet to be a definitive screen version of this creature from Native American folklore.
The latest take on the myth is titled, aptly enough, The Wendigo and it begins somewhere in the woods of North Carolina as YouTuber Logan calls out the creature’s name hoping to catch it on camera for his livestream. He gets more than he bargained for and gets dragged off while, in true found-footage fashion, his camera glitches.

"After that, every time I went someplace - he was there." Gravitas has unveiled an official trailer for an indie dark comedy titled The Mimic, which premiered at this year's Cinequest Film Festival. A very strange comedy where the main character "learns that imitation may not be the sincerest form of flattery when he is befriended by a younger neighbor on the town's newspaper staff." The Kid, who is married but childless, knows no one in town. The Narrator knows everyone in town. Obsessed with the idea that the Kid may be a sociopath, the Narrator goes to extreme lengths to uncover the truth about him and his wife, who he soon begins to fancy. Between long walks down the street, a twisted dinner date, and a car drive gone terribly wrong, the Narrator gets closer and closer to the truth about the Kid. How's that for an intro? This...

After failing to arrive as the watercooler summer hit NBC had ordered, freshman action-drama American Odyssey has been canceled, sources report.
Cast options expire tonight, and the low-rated series never made much of a case for its own survival, premiering back in April to an underwhelming a 1.2 in the adults 18-49 demographic and 5.4 million viewers. Creator/showrunner Peter Horton found out recently and personally contacted the cast to give them the news.
The series centered on a U.S. soldier (Anna Friel) targeted for assassination by her own government after she caught wind of a vast military conspiracy. The series simultaneously charted her battle to make it back to the U.S. from Mali and the struggles of two other characters – a corporate attorney (Peter Facinelli) and a political activist (Jake Robinson) – pulled into the same conspiracy.

One of the more notable trends in recent television has been putting powerful women on the frontlines of the war against terror. From Showtime’s Homeland to CBS’ Madam Secretary and NBC’s State of Affairs, network execs seem caught up on a certain character type: a tough-as-nails, proudly female protagonist who’s strong-willed enough to go it alone whenever she’s as obstructed by people on her own team as the ones she’s fighting against. NBC’s American Odyssey isn’t exactly revolutionary in that aspect – and it owes a lot more than just its hero’s characterization to Homeland – but by casting Anna Friel in the lead role of a betrayed soldier finding her way home, it does set itself apart.

Much as the horror genre is deeply rooted in the evolving culture that creates it, NBC‘s latest “action-drama,” American Odyssey, builds itself from the conspiracy fears that are now equally laughed off and assumed to be obviously true.

NBC has tweaked the title of its upcoming drama Odyssey less than a month before its premiere, renaming the show American Odyssey.
Though the network declined to comment on what spurred the name change, sources close to the production say the new title better reflects the arduous journey of protagonist Odelle (Anna Friel), an American soldier beset by enemies on all sides as she attempts to return to her friends and family in New York.
Of course, the more cynical answer is that NBC execs weren’t living under a rock in January, when American Sniper stormed the box office and racked up Oscar nominations. Renaming the show American Odyssey may make the series more palatable to the same right-leaning audiences that sent Sniper soaring.
The transformation in NBC’s advertising campaign, tied in with the name-change, is quite startling. Whereas Friel’s protagonist was before on her knees, with her hands bound,...

[In case you've Forgotten, and as I will continue to mention each and every one of these posts that I do: This is *not* a review. Pilots change. Sometimes a lot. Often for the better. Sometimes for the worse. But they change. Actual reviews will be coming in September and perhaps October (and maybe midseason in some cases). This is, however, a brief gut reaction to not-for-air pilots. I know some people will be all "These are reviews." If you've read me, you've read my reviews and you know this isn't what they look like.] Show: "Odyssey" (NBC - Midseason) The Pitch: "It's 'Traffic' meets 'Homeland' meets whatever's on the front page of the newspaper today." Quick Response: First off, I wanna credit the ambition of Adam Armus & Nora Kay Foster's script and Peter Horton's directing/producing in this ensemble political thriller, which uses 51 minutes to introduce three interlocking stories and well over a dozen characters and an assortment of ripped-from-the-headlines plotlines that run the gamut from "familiar because you've seen them in movies or TV or in the news" to "nonsensical blather that presumably will make sense down the road." "Odyssey" is a project that aims high and even though it's 100 percent destined for failure, I would Always rather watch a flawed pilot with big dreams than a generic procedural. But I'm not sure a show like "Odyssey" has ever succeeded on network TV and nothing in Horton's admirable resume, nor the...

After months of build-up, HBO’s The Leftovers finally kicked off tonight with a sprawling, enigmatic pilot episode that worked diligently to introduce many of the show’s characters and hint at some of the many mysteries showrunner Damon Lindelof will now have to tease out answers to – over the course of many seasons, naturally. If you were anticipating the pilot as feverishly as I was, you may have been a little disappointed to get exactly what you were expecting – brooding characters, a thoroughly gloomy tone and many puzzling plot threads – but it’s far too early to really exalt or damn The Leftovers. After all, above everything else in the pilot, the sense that the characters are just nearing the end of the calm before some apocalyptic storm comes through most clearly.
Before we delve into what that storm might be, however, let’s look at how the pilot unfolded.

"The Carrie Diaries" took a turn for the serious last week when Walt (Brendan Dooling) and Bennett (Jake Robinson) had their first brush with the mid-'80s NYC AIDS crisis. And while they both tested negative, that health scare prompted Walt to break up with Bennett.
Executive producer Amy B. Harris reveals that Walt and Bennett are going to be dealing with both the breakup and the AIDS scare in different ways. "Walt moves back into his family's house and his struggle for the next few episodes is can you deny who you really are? How is that going to go for you?" Harris tells Zap2it. "And Walt and Bennett are not going to be together and I think Bennett is going to show some surprising responses of his own to the breakup."

Bennet (Jake Robinson) and Walt (Brendan Dooling) in “Date Expectations”
When you set a TV show in the hip, trendy and gay world of Manhattan in the 1980s, it’s inevitable that the AIDS crisis will eventually come up.
Tonight is that time for the CW series, The Carrie Diaries.
While the Sex and the City prequel that follows a teenage Carrie Bradshaw (played by AnnaSophia Robb) typically is a light, fun hour of teen angst drama and finding your own voice as an individual, tonight’s “Date Expectations” episode gets a big dose of reality.
In the episode, centered around the various characters dealing with Valentines Day, our favorite teen gay Walt (Brendan Dooling) isn’t thrilled with spending the holiday with Bf Bennet (Jake Robinson) at a gay bar called Boys (watch for the gold and black hot pants on the go-go boys in the club). Spoiler alert: You probably guessed it on your own, but the mid-'80s NYC AIDS epidemic doesn't mean anything good for young Walt (Brendan Dooling) and Bennett's (Jake Robinson) fledgling but adorable relationship on "The Carrie Diaries."
In Friday (Jan. 10) night's episode, "Date Expectations," Walt has his first brush with the situation that gay men were facing in New York at the time when one of Bennett's ex-boyfriends tests positive for AIDS and is dying in the hospital. It's equal parts scary, heartbreaking, and life-changing.
"The Carrie Diaries" executive producer Amy B. Harris tells Zap2it that this is only the beginning of the story for Walt and Bennett.
"We felt a huge responsibility having the show set in the '80s in New York, in a world that has a very present gay community, that we [would] explore what that would mean," Harris says. "We really felt like Walt has grown so much.

I've said it before and I will say it again: the way Amy B. Harris shaped and evolved Walt's coming out journey on The Carrie Diaries was a thing of beauty because, despite being set in 1984, the story unfolded with a complex and contemporary edge that made it deeply relatable and utterly heartfelt. Obviously a huge portion of that praise also goes to star Brendan Dooling, who infused Walt with just the right amount of fear and acceptance throughout this powerful character arc.
The end of season one introduced a love interest for Walt (in the charming shape of Jake Robinson's Bennet) and revealed the boys would be spending summer in the city, making their romantic status one of the biggest season two premiere questions! I caught up with Brendan Dooling to talk about Walt and Bennet in season two and how the show will continue to break new ground with this storyline.
