‘The Bikeriders’ officially pushed as an adapted screenplay at Oscars … but not at the Writers Guild
We already had “The Bikeriders” in our Oscars predictions center as an adapted screenplay, but now Focus has confirmed to Variety that that’s where it will compete for Oscars. But it won’t be considered an adapted script everywhere. At the Writers Guild Awards, the film will still be slotted as an original piece of writing.
“The Bikeriders” was inspired by the photobook of the same name by Danny Lyon, and tells the story of the Vandals Motorcycle Club, a fictional version of the Outlaws Motorcycle Club. It stars Austin Butler as a member of the motorcycle gang, with Tom Hardy as its leader. It actually premiered at the Telluride Film Festival back in 2023, but wasn’t released by Focus Features until June 2024 due to the 2023 labor strike by the SAG-AFTRA industry union of performers and artists.

“The Bikeriders” is taking a trip from original to adapted screenplay Oscar consideration.
Focus Features’ drama, directed and written by Jeff Nichols, will compete for the Academy Award in the best adapted screenplay category, Variety has learned exclusively.
The movie stars Austin Butler, Jodie Comer and Tom Hardy. It premiered at the 2023 Telluride Film Festival, garnering rave reviews despite the ongoing Writers Guild and Screen Actors Guild strikes. Initially scheduled for release by 20th Century Studios on December 1, 2023, the film’s launch was delayed. Focus Features later acquired the project and released it in June. Before this acquisition, Variety exclusively confirmed that although the film draws inspiration from Danny Lyon’s iconic photobook, it was initially positioned as an original screenplay. However, those plans have shifted.

Halle Berry is one of the biggest movie stars of all time. That is a fact. Sure, she’s played Catwoman in that abomination of a movie, but her career includes major credits such as Monster’s Ball (2001), the role of Storm in four installments of the X-Men film series (2000–2014), the henchwoman of a robber in the thriller Swordfish (2001), and Bond girl Jinx in Die Another Day (2002). She also has significant roles in Perfect Stranger (2007), Cloud Atlas (2012), and The Call (2013), as well as Kingsman: The Golden Circle (2017) and John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum (2019).
Her role in Monster’s Ball earned her an Oscar for Best Actress in a Leading Role, which is when she became the (so far) only African-American woman to win the Academy Award for Best Actress, and the first woman of color.
In a recent big interview for Marie Claire, the actress, among other things, discussed her career in...

Halle Berry made history in 2001 when she won the Best Actress Oscar for her role in Monster’s Ball.
The now 58-year-old actress was the first Black actress to win the top actress prize at the annual awards ceremony, after being only the seventh nominated.
Since her historic win, seven more Black actresses have been nominated for Best Actress In a Leading Role at the Academy Awards, but none have won.
In a new interview, Halle said she is saddened every year and calls out the Academy for there still not being another Black Best Actress winner.

Halle Berry continues to be disappointed with the Oscars as she remains the only Black performer to ever win the Academy Award for best actress. She took home the prize for “Monster’s Ball” at the 2002 Oscars, and only one other woman of color (Michelle Yeoh for “Everything Everywhere All at Once”) has won best actress in the 22 years since.
“I’m still eternally miffed that no Black woman has come behind me for that best actress Oscar, I’m continually saddened by that year after year,” Berry said in an interview with Marie Claire. “And it’s certainly not because there has been nobody deserving.”

Peter Sarsgaard is more than presumably done with “Presumed Innocent.”
The Apple TV+ series, which also starred Sarsgaard’s frequent collaborator and brother-in-law Jake Gyllenhaal, was renewed for a second season in July 2024. While Gyllenhaal will return as an executive producer along with David E. Kelley and J.J. Abrams, there is no casting news yet. It is likely the limited legal-thriller series will be reimagined as an anthology series: Apple’s announcement teased only that Season 2 will “unfold around a suspenseful, brand new case.”
Either way, it will be without Sarsgaard as prosecutor Tommy Molto. The actor told IndieWire that he will not be appearing in “Presumed Innocent” Season 2, and instead opts to never revisit any of his past roles.
“I’m not really that interested in sequels. I think I’ve only ever done one season of anything… I think I’m a one-season person,” Sarsgaard said while promoting his upcoming indie film “Coup!.

Note: This story contains spoilers from the Season 1 finale of “Presumed Innocent”
Did you predict that final reveal in “Presumed Innocent”? The person who killed Carolyn Polhemus (Renate Reinsve) was not Rusty Sabich (Jake Gyllenhaal), his wife Barbara (Ruth Negga) or their sometimes suspicious seeming son Kyle (Kingston Rumi Southwick).
Instead, we learned that it was Rusty’s daughter Jaden (Chase Infiniti), who not only knew about her father’s affair, but went to Carolyn’s house that night to tell her to stay away him. When Carolyn revealed she was pregnant with Rusty’s child, Jaden lost it and repeatedly struck her with the fire poker, then covered her tracks.
Rusty returned and found Carolyn’s body and immediately thought Barbara had committed the crime (which is how the 1990 movie ended). He staged the body to look like a previous case to confuse the situation and drive suspicion away from Barbara.

O-t Fagbenle is an actor on the rise. He’s been working in film and television for over 20 years and has experience in theater that goes even further back, but with roles in “The Handmaid’s Tale,” Marvel’s “Black Widow,” and most recently “Loot” and “Presumed Innocent” for Apple TV+, audiences are finally starting to take notice of him. How could they not? The ease with which he takes on each performance has become more and more enticing, even when he’s playing a gross district attorney like Nico Della Guardia on “Presumed Innocent.”
Chatting with GQ for a recent interview, Fagbenle discussed the process of taking on the character and how the writing guided him in the right direction.
“There was a moment in the script where some of the other characters are watching my character on television, and they were like, ‘Oh, he’s so yuck.’ And I...

Craftspeople rarely get the spotlight that actors and directors get. However, Donald Mowat is not like most craftspeople. Over the past ten years, Mowat’s career put him at the center of some of Hollywood’s very best movies. After working on Dune, Blade Runner 2049, and Nightcrawler, Mowat kept his options open.
A long-time collaboration with Jake Gyllenhaal led to Presumed Innocent, allowing Mowat to dive into unique makeup effects with an all-star cast. The resulting series highlights much of what Mowat has to offer, and the Oscar-nominated makeup designer takes full advantage over the series. With the finale this week, Mowat sat down with FandomWire to discuss his work. This interview was completed prior to the announcement that Presumed Innocent will have a second season. Spoiler Alert: This post contains spoilers for “The Verdict,” the Season 1 finale of “Presumed Innocent,” now streaming on Apple TV+.
On the day Apple TV+ dropped the highly anticipated finale of its courtroom thriller “Presumed Innocent,” Peter Sarsgaard, who plays the show’s chief prosecutor, is off the grid.
He’s holed up with spotty cell service in the “middle of nowhere,” with only his affectionate, very vocal cat to keep him company — which is rather appropriate, considering where the show leaves his cat dad character, Assistant District Attorney Tommy Molto.
All season, Tommy has led the scorched-earth prosecution of his former coworker Rusty Sabich (Jake Gyllenhaal), who has been on trial for the murder of his mistress, Carolyn Polhemus (Renate Reinsve) — who’d worked with both Tommy and Rusty as a fellow prosecutor. In the penultimate episode, Tommy had seemingly moved the needle toward conviction by eviscerating Rusty’s...

Editor’s note: This post discusses the ending of Apple TV+’s “Presumed Innocent.”
No ending that includes Elizabeth Marvel and Bill Camp gardening together in blissful harmony — with Mr. Marvel wearing a Chicago Bears shirt — can be all bad. And, to be fair, the “Presumed Innocent” finale accomplished exactly what the series has been striving for throughout its lengthy, often hysterical (in every meaning of the word) eight-episode run: It ended with a twist as gasp-inducing in the moment as it was groan-worthy a few minutes later.
After all, the title and history behind “Presumed Innocent” point viewers toward an ending where the guilty party is hiding in plain sight. Someone who’s conveniently, almost instinctively written off not just because they couldn’t commit murder, but also because they wouldn’t commit murder. That rules out Rusty Sabich (Jake Gyllenhaal), a loud and violent fella who had an affair with the victim,...

Spoiler Alert: The story includes details about the Season 1 finale of Apple TV+’s Presumed Innocent.
The Chekhov’s Gun narrative principle stipulates that if a writer introduces a gun hanging on a wall, there must be a reason, such as it being fired later in the story. Presumed Innocent employed the classic plot device in a big way as creator David E. Kelley used an element he had introduced to Scott Turrow’s story for a surprise ending.
Rusty (Jake Gyllenhaal) and Barbara’s (Ruth Negga) daughter Jaden (Chase Infiniti) was revealed as Carolyn Polhemus’ killer in the last minutes of Presumed Innocent‘s finale. In the book, as well as in the 1990 movie, Carolyn’s killer, Barbara, and Rusty have only one child, a young son. Kelley added a daughter, and made both siblings older.

In the nail-bitingly tense finale for Apple’s gripping courtroom thriller “Presumed Innocent,” audiences finally learned who killed lawyer Carolyn Polhemus (Renate Reinsve), the former lover of Jake Gyllenhaal’s character Rusty Sabich, who was charged and tried for the murder.
In last week’s episode, Tommy Molto (Peter Sarsgaard), who relished the opportunity to prosecute his longtime rival, was ruled out as a suspect, as director Greg Yaitanes confirmed to TheWrap.

Despite the probable cause for a mistrial, both sides decided to proceed in the finale, appropriately titled “The Verdict,” with Rusty presenting the summation himself, despite Ray’s reservations.

Spoiler Alert: This story contains spoilers for Apple TV+’s “Presumed Innocent” Season 1 finale titled “The Verdict.”
Since David E. Kelley’s “Presumed Innocent” debuted on Apple TV+ last month, the series has taken viewers on a ride filled with shocking clues and troubling revelations, all while diving into the minds of narcissistic and obsessive men. Over eight episodes, “Presumed Innocent” followed former chief deputy prosecutor Rusty Sabich (Jake Gyllenhaal), who was on trial for the murder of his lover and colleague Carolyn Polhemus (Renate Reinsve).
In the “Presumed Innocent” finale — an episode that was not provided as a screener ahead of time to journalists —viewers learned that Carolyn’s killer is Rusty’s teenage daughter, Jaden (Chase Infiniti). After Rusty was found not guilty, this is how audiences found out who did it.

We are a country obsessed with reboots. Refashioning tired narratives into something that ideally becomes new in its retelling. Or, perhaps, just makes studio executives more money. We after all must endure an endless return of Marvel and DC characters, adaptations of adaptations, until everything feels like a shitty copy of a copy, rasterized, and remade until the sign and signifier barely have any resemblance.
But which stories do we reboot and why? Which narratives deserve a second look? And of all of them, and in this economy, why was it Presumed Innocent,...

Our top pick for an awards contender to stream this week, crime drama “The Bikeriders,” has some names attached to it that have been in the conversation in awards seasons past. It stars Emmy and Tony winner Jodie Comer and Academy Award nominees Austin Butler, Tom Hardy, and Michael Shannon. Moreover, it’s written and directed by Jeff Nichols, whose previous film, 2016’s “Loving,” earned Ruth Negga an Academy Award nomination. While “The Bikeriders” looks more likely than not to miss out on major awards this year, don’t count Comer out yet in lead actress races. She is excellent in the film.
“The Bikeriders” is set in the midwest in the tumultuous years of the mid-to-late 1960s, and follows the rise and fall of Johnny Davis (Hardy), the founder of an outlaw motorcycle club, as seen through the eyes of his protegé’s wife, Kathy Cross (Comer). The club...

Apple renews Presumed Innocent for Season 2 after the Jake Gyllenhaal-led thriller climbs the charts
Apple TV+ is so thrilled with the performance of its new legal drama Presumed Innocent that it is renewing the Jake Gyllenhaal-led thriller for another season. Some creative forces behind the first season, David E. Kelly, J.J. Abrams, and Gyllenhaal, return as executive producers for Presumed Innocent Season 2, with author Scott Turow co-executive producing. Wait. Isn’t Presumed Innocent a one-and-done story? Not when money is waiting in the wings, my friends!
Presumed Innocent debuted on Apple TV+ one month ago and has been tearing up the charts since then. It’s the most-viewed drama ever on Apple TV+, with the final two episodes arriving on July 17 and July 24. While the story of Gyllenhaal’s Rusty Sabich and Ruth Negga’s Barbara Sabitch is concluded, Presumed Innocent Season 2 will revolve “around a suspenseful, brand new case.” Apple won’t reveal casting for some time, though it’s possible characters...

With the “Presumed Innocent” finale set to stream on July 24, Apple is letting fans know that there’s more to look forward to.
David E. Kelley’s limited series, itself an adaptation of Scott Turow’s novel of the same name that also inspired the 1990 film, has been renewed for a second season on Apple TV+. Kelley, Turow, J.J. Abrams, Dustin Thomason, and Jake Gyllenhaal are all set to return as executive producers. However, Season 2 will be centered around an entirely new case, so it’s unclear if Gyllenhaal or co-stars Ruth Negga, Bill Camp, or Peter Sarsgaard will return in an on-screen capacity.
The eight episode first season sees Gyllenhaal step into the role of Rusty Sabich (first played by Harrison Ford in Alan J. Pakula’s film), a prosecutor who becomes a prime suspect in his co-worker’s murder after their affair becomes public knowledge. While the show...

The verdict is in on Presumed Innocent: Apple TV+ wants more.
The tech giant’s streaming service has ordered a second season of the legal drama based on Scott Turow’s best-selling novel. The renewal comes as the show’s eight-episode first season, which stars Jake Gyllenhaal as a prosecutor accused of murdering a colleague, is set to conclude on July 24.
Season two of Presumed Innocent will follow a new case. Even though I think Supernatural lasted way too long, I still miss the show. Tensions are boiling over with Rusty Sabich’s (Jake Gyllenhaal) family life on Presumed Innocent. Now that his wife Barbara (Ruth Negga) knows all about his affair with his murdered colleague Carolyn (Renate Reinsve), things have become positively icy between them. In this exclusive clip from Wednesday’s new episode, titled, “The Burden,” Rusty calls Barbara to make amends with her, saying, “I know that we said a lot to each other the other night, and I just want you to know that I heard you.” Barbara, however, is presently indisposed and doesn’t tell him the truth about why, saying, “Rusty, can we talk about this when I get home? I’m about to step into the market.” She also hesitates to respond to his “I love you” but ultimately does say it back. As the camera edges back, we see that Barbara is in a bar, not the grocery store,...

In Episode 3 of “Presumed Innocent” (“The Discovery”), showrunner David E. Kelley turns the heat on Jake Gyllenhaal’s Rusty Sabitch, Chicago’s slick chief deputy prosecutor suspected of brutally murdering his pregnant mistress and colleague, Carolyn (Renate Reinsve). It kicks off with Rusty receiving the shocking text —”You were there, I saw you” — which places him at the scene of the crime, denies him an alibi, and further points to his guilt.
For editor Philip Neel (Episodes 3 and 6), this was a great entry point for cutting Rusty’s obsession with Carolyn and how it spiraled out of control in a twisted confluence of sex, politics, power, and love. “Nobody writes better courtroom drama than David Kelley,” Neel told IndieWire. “And he made a lot of changes. Shortly after his turn in Roadhouse on Prime Video, Jake Gyllenhaal returns to the small screen in the Apple TV+ series Presumed Innocent, based on the best-selling book by Scott Turow. The lawyer-novelist’s popular legal thriller novel was previously adapted into a 1990 film. The show follows the criminal case against a Chicago prosecutor charged with the murder of a colleague. The investigation also touches on the home life of the family of the accused.

Is Rusty Sabich guilty of the murder of his former mistress Carolyn, or is he, as was once written about Congressman Gary Condit, “the Unluckiest Adulterer Who Ever Lived”?
Through three episodes, that appears to be the central question of the Apple TV+ version of Presumed Innocent. I predict the series will debate that question quite a few times.
Rusty (Jake Gyllenhaal) is unquestionably guilty of adultery, dishonesty, and various degrees of unethical and unsavory personal and professional behavior. But is he a murderer?
The third episode of the series, "Discovery," does not bring us much further towards resolving that question.
And it also starts to raise doubts over whether it was wise to stretch this mystery -- previously a novel and then a feature film -- into an eight-part mini-series. After all, there can only be so many red herrings.
