Based on the 2010 novel of the same name written by Emma Donoghue, Room premiered in 2015 to critical acclaim. The incredibly emotional film stars Brie Larson as Joy, a mother who was kidnapped and has been held hostage for seven years. She lives in a backyard shed with her five-year-old son Jack, whose father is the man who abducted her and repeatedly assaults her. Jack has never seen the outside world and all he knows is their small shed, which they call "Room."
The movie is an unflinching look at abuse and trauma, but it's also a heartfelt story of a mother trying to create the best life possible for her child. The wonderful Jacob Tremblay portrays Jack and also received rave reviews for his performance.
As of Aug. 1, Room is available to stream on Netflix, and I'd highly recommend it if you haven't seen it. But definitely have the tissues...

The Lifetime original "The Girl in the Basement" and A24's "Room" draw from the same harrowing true story. In 2008, a young woman named Elisabeth Fritzl from Amstetten, Lower Austria, escaped the cellar of her family home after being imprisoned for 24 years by her father, Josef Fritzl. During that time, she gave birth to seven of Josef's children — three of whom remained in captivity, one who passed away shortly after childbirth, and three others who were raised by Fritzl and his wife, Rosemarie, as "foundlings" put on their doorstep from their runaway daughter. Josef had told his wife, family, and neighbors that Elisabeth had left town and possibly joined a religious cult.
Elisabeth was able to break free from her underground prison after one of her children became unconscious. Josef took her to the hospital and the doctors were concerned over her poor health conditions. Josef was sentenced to...

Broadway’s Room stars Adrienne Warren and Ephraim Sykes, along with choreographer Galen Hooks, are speaking out on the bizarre, last-minute “indefinite postponement” of the much anticipated spring production.
“We do not know what happened,” says Warren, the Tina star who was to play the lead role in the Room stage adaptation that was to begin previews next month. “We have no idea. As this continues to unfold, I just want to publicly say, it is not a reflection on the beautiful souls in this piece. It is not a reflection on our creatives.”

The Broadway production of Room has been postponed indefinitely.
The production, which was in rehearsals with Adrienne Warren as the lead, will not go forward following a “shortfall in capitalization” and the withdrawal of a lead producer, the production said Thursday. The production, which was scheduled to begin performances April 3 at the James Earl Jones Theatre, was shuttered as of Thursday.
“In the midst of our rehearsals we were informed by one of our lead producers that due to personal reasons, they did not intend to fulfill their obligations to the production. Since being notified, the rest of the producing team has exhausted all possible avenues to keep the show on track, but the narrow timeline and economic shortfall created by this series of events has proven to be insurmountable,” producer Hunter Arnold said in the press release. “We are incredibly disappointed not to be able to open this remarkable...

For better or worse, 2022 has been the year of Florence Pugh.
“Don’t Worry Darling” reached a level of pop culture relevance that most arthouse films can only dream of, with film festival attendees and celebrity gossip addicts hanging on every detail of the rumored feud between Pugh and her director and co-star Olivia Wilde. But while the film’s reviews were mixed, nobody denied that Pugh gave a phenomenal performance in the lead role. Captivating industry observers while having the acting chops to justify the attention is the stuff that movie stars are made of.
Pugh won’t be leaving the limelight any time soon, as her upcoming film slate leaves her well positioned to capitalize on her current momentum. She’s currently working with directors ranging from Christopher Nolan to Denis Villeneuve, and will be seen everywhere from indie dramas to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Exclusive: When the announcement was made in January that Emma Donoghue had developed a play (with music) of her bestselling novel Room and the acclaimed film that followed – and that the play was heading to Broadway – plenty of New Yorkers were filled with questions (Londoners and Canadians had already seen the show).
Some of the answers might be addressed in a new trailer and first-look photo provided exclusively to Deadline.
How can a stage play (with music) adapt a tale of such a troubled, harrowing story of domestic abuse, with its downbeat claustrophobia and mental cruelty, translate to a theater district more welcoming to The Music Mans and Funny Girls of the world.
With the exclusive release to Deadline today of the production’s first trailer and key art, the questioners might get some hints, like the reminder that there are heavy doses of inspiration, hope and love that breathe air into Room.

Seen as the main precursor to what you might expect on Oscar nomination morning, the nominations for the 2023 Ee BAFTA Film Awards have been announced, and Netflix’s “All Quiet on the Western Front” gained even more steam as a major awards threat, with an impressive 14 nominations in total. The movie equals Ang Lee’s 2001 “Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon” as the film not the English language with the most nominations in BAFTA’s history.
Other films that had a strong showing in overall noms include “The Banshees of Insiherin” and “Everything Everywhere All at Once” (10 each), “Elvis” (9 noms), and “Tar” (5 noms), but possibly the most surprising inclusion was that both leads of the acclaimed indie “Good Luck to You, Leo Grande” — Emma Thompson and Daryl McCormack — scored leading actress and actor nods, respectively.

World War One drama “All Quiet on the Western Front” leads this year’s BAFTA nominations with 14 nods, tying with “Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon” as the most-nominated non-English language film in the awards’ history.
The Netflix drama — for which awards chances have quietly gathered steam in the last month — is up for best picture as well as film not in the English language, director, adapted screenplay, supporting actor, original score, casting, cinematography, editing, production design, costume design, make-up and hair, sound and special visual effects.
“Gandhi” is the most nominated film at the BAFTAs with 16 nods and “All Quiet” ties with “Atonement,” which also had 14.
Close behind “All Quiet” with 10 nominations apiece are Searchlight’s “The Banshees of Inisherin” and A24’s “Everything Everywhere All At Once.” Warner Bros.’ “Elvis” follows with nine nominations, while Focus Features’ “Tár” received five nods.
All five titles are nominated for best film this year.

Sebastián Lelio's films have often dealt with the experiences of women on the edge or at a major crossroads in their lives. His characters are challenged by present difficulties and past traumas that appear directly in front of them all at once, and Lelio uses every tool possible to fill his movies with their subjective view of events. In his 2022 film "The Wonder," based on Emma Donoghue's book of the same name, that subjectivity becomes a core question: How can one know the experience of another?

How do you follow up a movie like "Frank," a quirky musical comedy about the lead singer of an avant garde band who has spent years wearing a large papier-mâché head? In Lenny Abrahamson's case, you direct "Room," a tender yet harrowing story about a mother and her young son held in captivity for years by a sexual predator.
The two films perhaps aren't as different as that brief synopsis suggests. Irish filmmaker Abrahamson has often told stories about outsiders with a different perspective on the world throughout his career. As he once told Far Out:
"A lot of my work is about people who are stepping away from society. I think it's fair to say that I look at those marginalized, or feel different, in society. It helps us to empathize with the characters if they're outsiders looking in."
"Frank" and "Room" share this theme. Once Frank (Michael Fassbender...

A strange and beautiful period drama full of mystery and miracles – Florence Pugh is a wonder herself, with a bristling, transfixing performance
50 best films of 2022 in the UKMore on the best culture of 2022
Chilean director Sebastián Lelio’s adaptation of Emma Donoghue’s 2016 novel is a completely absorbing descent into the mist – of 1860s Ireland, of mysticism, of religious fervour. Put aside the distracting framing device, two present-tense bookends assumedly meant to underscore our ability to suspend disbelief that end up undercutting this eerie, remarkable period film.
The vibe is off, the mood unsettling, from the moment we meet Florence Pugh’s Lib, an English nurse sent to a remote Irish village to observe a reported miracle: 11-year-old Anna (an impressive Kíla Lord Cassidy) who has refused to eat for four months and yet remains curiously healthy. Lelio’s film approaches Anna’s anorexia mirabilis as a slow-burn mystery, as...

Exclusive: After months of rumors and a three month exclusive negotiating period, Anonymous Content is now near a deal to acquire the prolific production company Automatik. There’s a twist here: Deadline reported that Anonymous was in talks for Grandview/Automatik. But The Dish hears that Grandview won’t be part of the transaction and will remain a freestanding rep company.
Deal will close early next year, sources said. The separation of Grandview and Automatik is amicable, we’re told. In fact, they just had a rather pleasant holiday party.
Anonymous, run by CEO Dawn Olmstead, had been having conversations with the twinned entities since last spring. Details will emerge after the holidays, and Anonymous Content, Automatik and Grandview declined comment.
Grandview will continue as a separate entity. Company has 20 managers who work with more than 500 clients including Joe Kosinski, Ryan Condal, Justin Simien, Dan Trachtenberg, Hiro Murai, Molly Smith Metzler,...

The film spans a 20-year period, beginning with 11-year-old Sophie (Frankie Corio) on a father-daughter vacation to Turkey and culminating with her reflection on that experience in adulthood. Upon its premiere at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival, “Aftersun” was winner of the French Touch Jury Prize. Most recently, Wells received a breakthrough director prize at the Gotham Awards.

What with her feature “Don’t Worry Darling” taking a pounding from critics while holding its own at the box office despite barrels of tabloid gossip, rumors of tension on the movie’s set and a barrage of criticism all over social media, actress Florence Pugh hasn’t had it easy lately. Perhaps, however, the scales are starting to balance a bit. Pugh’s period mystery thriller “The Wonder” was released on Netflix on Wednesday, November 16 and — amid a very healthy Tomatometer score of 86 fresh from its theatrical run — rose immediately to the top of the streamer’s global most-watched list.
It took “The Wonder” only 24 hours to zoom into the viewing Top 10 in 74 countries. It’s already number one in 11 of those countries, including the U.K., Australia, New Zealand, Spain and Mexico. (It’s sixth in the United States.)

The Wonder director Sebastián Lelio and star Florence Pugh joined Deadline’s Contenders Film: Los Angeles awards-season event to talk about their Netflix film and the power and fanaticism of faith.
The film is a psychological period drama that follows an English nurse’s immaculate investigation in the Irish countryside. Set in 1862 Ireland, Lib Wright (Pugh) is brought to a small religious village to investigate the validity of a young girl (Kíla Lord Cassidy) who has claimed to have survived without eating for months by the grace of God. Tom Burke, Ciarán Hinds and Elaine Cassidy also star.

By a strange quirk of timing, I happened to finally catch Don’t Worry Darling, Florence Pugh and Olivia Wilde’s high-concept psychological thriller run into the ground by gossipy drama. I managed to watch it only the night before Pugh’s lesser-known 2022 project, The Wonder. As to little surprise, Don’t Worry Darling was not nearly good enough to withstand any whisper of scandal, but what shocked me was how The Wonder hits almost all of the same beats—motherhood and sexuality, grief and belief, rituals of self-delusion—and does them so much better. There’s even a more incisive commentary on building false houses around ourselves! To wit:
The opening shot of Sebastián Lelio’s period drama at first resembles Nathan Fielder’s intensely awkward, unflinchingly meta HBO series, The Rehearsal: a warehouse containing a movie set. Though The Wonder is meant to be focused on the 1862 Irish home of the O’Donnell family,...

Dir: Sebastián Lelio. Starring: Florence Pugh, Tom Burke, Kíla Lord Cassidy, Elaine Cassidy, Caolán Byrne, Niamh Algar, Toby Jones, Ciarán Hinds. 15, 108 minutes.
Watching The Wonder on Netflix, you’ll think you’ve clicked on the wrong film. The beguiling period drama starring Florence Pugh opens not in Ireland’s boglands as promised by the trailer, but in the harsh light of a film studio. A disembodied voice (Niamh Algar’s) will reassure you that this is indeed The Wonder. The voice continues: “The people you are about to meet, the characters, believe in their stories with complete devotion. We are nothing without stories. So we invite you to believe in this one.”
It’s an odd, and already critically divisive, beginning. The film sees director Sebastián Lelio and screenwriter Alice Birch (known for her work on Succession and Normal People) take on Emma Donoghue’s 2016 novel of the same name.

This review originally ran September 2, 2022, in conjunction with the film’s world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival.
You’ll need to have faith in your core to be swept away by Sebastián Lelio’s lovely and elegiac “The Wonder,” a mournful and textured psychodrama that gently nurses one into hope and spiritual serenity.
But not a religious kind of faith, to be clear: You’ll just need to believe in, or at least gradually come to accept, the power of stories as a means of survival.
A deeply feminine tale of fortitude with heart and teeth, “The Wonder” (making its world premiere at the 2022 Telluride Film Festival) hints at this very suggestion right at the start — perhaps a tad too expressly — and opens on what looks like a contemporary film stage. As the camera pans, it unveils the yarn’s eventual setting, the impoverished Irish Midlands of the 19th Century,...

Plot: 1862, 13 years after the Great Famine. An English Nightingale Nurse, Lib Wright is called to the Irish Midlands by a devout community to conduct a 15-day examination over one of their own. Anna O’Donnell is an 11-year-old girl who claims not to have eaten for four months, surviving miraculously on “manna from heaven”. In the new movie "The Wonder," released in theaters Nov. 2, Florence Pugh stars as an English nurse, Lib Wright, tasked with watching over a young girl named Anna (Kíla Lord Cassidy) who allegedly hasn't eaten in four months. Anna claims that she only receives nourishment through manna from heaven, and Lib struggles as she watches the health of her young charge deteriorate as she refuses to eat, claiming it's penance for sin.
