Protagonist Pictures has closed a series of deals for H Is For Hawk, starring Claire Foy andBrendan Gleeson,as production gets underway in Wales today (November 7).

The drama from Bafta-winning UK director Philippa Lowthorpe has sold to Lionsgate for the UK-Ireland, as well as Filmcoopi for Switzerland, M2 for Eastern Europe and Front Row for the Middle East.

Based on a memoir by Helen MacDonald, the feature follows a woman who, after losing her beloved father, finds herself saved by an unlikely friendship with a stubborn hawk named Mabel.

UTA Independent Film Group is co-repping the US.

Based on the 2010 novel of the same name written by Emma Donoghue, Room premiered in 2015 to critical acclaim. The incredibly emotional film stars Brie Larson as Joy, a mother who was kidnapped and has been held hostage for seven years. She lives in a backyard shed with her five-year-old son Jack, whose father is the man who abducted her and repeatedly assaults her. Jack has never seen the outside world and all he knows is their small shed, which they call "Room."

The movie is an unflinching look at abuse and trauma, but it's also a heartfelt story of a mother trying to create the best life possible for her child. The wonderful Jacob Tremblay portrays Jack and also received rave reviews for his performance.

Based on author Helen MacDonald’s well-received New York Times memoir of the same name, the film is to be directed by BAFTA winner Philippa Lowthorpe (The Crown), and written by Emma Donoghue (Room).

The true story follows Helen (Foy) who, after losing her beloved father (Gleeson), finds herself saved by an unlikely friendship with a stubborn hawk named Mabel. Through the bond, Helen rediscovers the beauty of being alive.

Protagonist Pictures’ is launching worldwide sales on the buzzy package ahead of the EFM. Pic is being produced by Plan B and was developed with Film4 who will executive-produce and co-finance.

Based on the best-selling novel by Bonnie Garmus, “Lessons in Chemistry” combines science and cooking in a great experiment. Brie Larson stars as intensely intelligent Elizabeth Zott, a woman bound to make waves wherever she goes because of her high Iq as well as her beauty. Larson also executive produced the Apple TV+ drama series, whose showrunner is Lee Eisenberg. Eight episodes unfold to tell the emotional and unexpected story of Elizabeth Zott, a Hastings lab technician (and really PhD-level chemist) who transforms into a television celebrity cook.

The first two episodes landed Friday, October 13, and the show will end right before Thanksgiving, an appropriate holiday for cooking! New episodes will be released weekly on Fridays at midnight, Pacific time. Alongside Larson, the starring cast includes Lewis Pullman, Stephanie Koenig, Aja Naomi King, Kevin Sussman and more stars throughout the season.

In 2008, a young woman named Elisabeth Fritzl from Amstetten, Lower Austria, escaped the cellar of her family home after being imprisoned for 24 years by her father, Josef Fritzl. During that time, she gave birth to seven of Josef's children — three of whom remained in captivity, one who passed away shortly after childbirth, and three others who were raised by Fritzl and his wife, Rosemarie, as "foundlings" put on their doorstep from their runaway daughter. Josef had told his wife, family, and neighbors that Elisabeth had left town and possibly joined a religious cult.

The San Sebastian Film Festival will fete Javier Bardem with its prestigious Donostia Award at its 71st edition, running 22 — 30 September.

The actor will receive the career achievement prize on Friday 22 September at the Kursaal Auditorium, thirty years after his first visit to the Festival for the competition screening of Bigas Luna’s film Golden Balls in 1993. Broadway’s Room stars Adrienne Warren and Ephraim Sykes, along with choreographer Galen Hooks, are speaking out on the bizarre, last-minute “indefinite postponement” of the much anticipated spring production.

“We do not know what happened,” says Warren, the Tina star who was to play the lead role in the Room stage adaptation that was to begin previews next month. “We have no idea. As this continues to unfold, I just want to publicly say, it is not a reflection on the beautiful souls in this piece. It is not a reflection on our creatives.”

The Broadway production of Room has been postponed indefinitely.

The production, which was in rehearsals with Adrienne Warren as the lead, will not go forward following a “shortfall in capitalization” and the withdrawal of a lead producer, the production said Thursday. The production, which was scheduled to begin performances April 3 at the James Earl Jones Theatre, was shuttered as of Thursday.

“In the midst of our rehearsals we were informed by one of our lead producers that due to personal reasons, they did not intend to fulfill their obligations to the production. Since being notified, the rest of the producing team has exhausted all possible avenues to keep the show on track, but the narrow timeline and economic shortfall created by this series of events has proven to be insurmountable,” producer Hunter Arnold said in the press release. “We are incredibly disappointed not to be able to open this remarkable...

All Quiet On The Western Front was the major winner at the 2023 Bafta Film Awards, picking up seven prizes including best film.

The 2023 Bafta Film Awards show is taking place today (February 19) from London’s Royal Festival Hall on the Southbank this year (it was previously at the Royal Albert Hall).

The show started at around 18:00 UK time, finishing at approximately 21:00, and will be broadcast with a time delay on BBC One starting at 19:00, with the final four awards broadcast live for the first time.

Exclusive: When the announcement was made in January that Emma Donoghue had developed a play (with music) of her bestselling novel Room and the acclaimed film that followed – and that the play was heading to Broadway – plenty of New Yorkers were filled with questions (Londoners and Canadians had already seen the show).

Some of the answers might be addressed in a new trailer and first-look photo provided exclusively to Deadline.

How can a stage play (with music) adapt a tale of such a troubled, harrowing story of domestic abuse, with its downbeat claustrophobia and mental cruelty, translate to a theater district more welcoming to The Music Mans and Funny Girls of the world.

With the exclusive release to Deadline today of the production’s first trailer and key art, the questioners might get some hints, like the reminder that there are heavy doses of inspiration, hope and love that breathe air into Room.

We’re now about halfway through the 2022-23 Broadway season, and there are currently nine productions of plays set to open this spring. World War One drama “All Quiet on the Western Front” leads this year’s BAFTA nominations with 14 nods, tying with “Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon” as the most-nominated non-English language film in the awards’ history.

The Netflix drama — for which awards chances have quietly gathered steam in the last month — is up for best picture as well as film not in the English language, director, adapted screenplay, supporting actor, original score, casting, cinematography, editing, production design, costume design, make-up and hair, sound and special visual effects.

“Gandhi” is the most nominated film at the BAFTAs with 16 nods and “All Quiet” ties with “Atonement,” which also had 14.

Close behind “All Quiet” with 10 nominations apiece are Searchlight’s “The Banshees of Inisherin” and A24’s “Everything Everywhere All At Once.” Warner Bros.’ “Elvis” follows with nine nominations, while Focus Features’ “Tár” received five nods.

Exclusive: After months of rumors and a three month exclusive negotiating period, Anonymous Content is now near a deal to acquire the prolific production company Automatik. There’s a twist here: Deadline reported that Anonymous was in talks for Grandview/Automatik. But The Dish hears that Grandview won’t be part of the transaction and will remain a freestanding rep company.

Deal will close early next year, sources said. The separation of Grandview and Automatik is amicable, we’re told. In fact, they just had a rather pleasant holiday party.

It was a great night for Charlotte Wells' father-daughter drama Aftersun at the British Independent Film Awards on Sunday evening, as the film—– already a favourite going into the evening after 16 nominations, won seven, including Best British Independent Film, Best Director and Best Screenplay.

Other films scoring several awards included Blue Jean, and The Origin, about a nomadic tribe that faces a terrifying ancient threat that comes when night falls.

The BIFAs continued non-gender-specific main performances categories and added one, the Joint Lead Performance, awarded to Tamara Lawrance and Letitia Wright for their roles as extraordinary real-life siblings who communicated only with each other in The Silent Twins.

It was an historic night for female filmmakers at the British Independent Film Awards, with 10 of the night’s biggest awards going to women or films directed by them. The biggest winner of the night was “Aftersun,” which won Best British Independent Film, as well as Best Director, Best Screenplay, and Best Debut Director for Charlotte Wells. The film also took home prizes for cinematography, editing, and music supervision.

Georgia Oakley’s “Blue Jean” also had a strong showing, with Rosy McEwen winning Best Lead Performance and Kerrie Hayes winning Best Supporting Performance and Oakley winning Best Debut Screenwriter. Shaheen Baig also won Best Casting for the film.

Charlotte Wells’ directorial feature debut, “Aftersun,” took home the most awards of any nominated film at the 25th annual British Independent Film Awards (BIFA), nabbing seven victories out of 16 nominations.

The film spans a 20-year period, beginning with 11-year-old Sophie (Frankie Corio) on a father-daughter vacation to Turkey and culminating with her reflection on that experience in adulthood. Upon its premiere at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival, “Aftersun” was winner of the French Touch Jury Prize. Most recently, Wells received a breakthrough director prize at the Gotham Awards.

Charlotte Wells’ directorial debut feature Aftersun was the big winner of the 2022 British Independent Film Awards (Bifas), taking seven prizes at Sunday night’s (December 4) ceremony in London.

Wells’ drama won the award for best British independent film, best director, the Douglas Hickox Award for best debut director, and best screenplay, adding to the three craft awards already announced – best cinematography, best editing and best music supervision.

What with her feature “Don’t Worry Darling” taking a pounding from critics while holding its own at the box office despite barrels of tabloid gossip, rumors of tension on the movie’s set and a barrage of criticism all over social media, actress Florence Pugh hasn’t had it easy lately. Perhaps, however, the scales are starting to balance a bit. Pugh’s period mystery thriller “The Wonder” was released on Netflix on Wednesday, November 16 and — amid a very healthy Tomatometer score of 86 fresh from its theatrical run — rose immediately to the top of the streamer’s global most-watched list.

It took “The Wonder” only 24 hours to zoom into the viewing Top 10 in 74 countries. It’s already number one in 11 of those countries, including the U.K., Australia, New Zealand, Spain and Mexico. (It’s sixth in the United States.)

The Wonder director Sebastián Lelio and star Florence Pugh joined Deadline’s Contenders Film: Los Angeles awards-season event to talk about their Netflix film and the power and fanaticism of faith.

The film is a psychological period drama that follows an English nurse’s immaculate investigation in the Irish countryside. Set in 1862 Ireland, Lib Wright (Pugh) is brought to a small religious village to investigate the validity of a young girl (Kíla Lord Cassidy) who has claimed to have survived without eating for months by the grace of God. Tom Burke, Ciarán Hinds and Elaine Cassidy also star.

By a strange quirk of timing, I happened to finally catch Don’t Worry Darling, Florence Pugh and Olivia Wilde’s high-concept psychological thriller run into the ground by gossipy drama. I managed to watch it only the night before Pugh’s lesser-known 2022 project, The Wonder. As to little surprise, Don’t Worry Darling was not nearly good enough to withstand any whisper of scandal, but what shocked me was how The Wonder hits almost all of the same beats—motherhood and sexuality, grief and belief, rituals of self-delusion—and does them so much better. There’s even a more incisive commentary on building false houses around ourselves! To wit:

Watching The Wonder on Netflix, you’ll think you’ve clicked on the wrong film. The beguiling period drama starring Florence Pugh opens not in Ireland’s boglands as promised by the trailer, but in the harsh light of a film studio. A disembodied voice (Niamh Algar’s) will reassure you that this is indeed The Wonder. The voice continues: “The people you are about to meet, the characters, believe in their stories with complete devotion. We are nothing without stories. So we invite you to believe in this one.”

It’s an odd, and already critically divisive, beginning. The film sees director Sebastián Lelio and screenwriter Alice Birch (known for her work on Succession and Normal People) take on Emma Donoghue’s 2016 novel of the same name.

You’ll need to have faith in your core to be swept away by Sebastián Lelio’s lovely and elegiac “The Wonder,” a mournful and textured psychodrama that gently nurses one into hope and spiritual serenity.

But not a religious kind of faith, to be clear: You’ll just need to believe in, or at least gradually come to accept, the power of stories as a means of survival.

Charlotte Wells’ indie breakout “Aftersun” continues to build momentum in the indie awards race.

After receiving four Gotham Award nods, “Aftersun” leads the 2022 British Independent Film Awards nominations in 16 categories, followed by 12 for “Blue Jean” and “The Wonder,” respectively. “Living” earned nine nominations and “Flux Gourmet,” “God’s Creatures,” “Men,” and “The Origin” each landed five nods.

The 25th annual BIFAs introduces new performance, first-time documentary feature, and music categories, with female filmmakers dominating the performance, writing, and directing categories for this year’s batch of nominees, recognizing 36 British features. The 2022 BIFA ceremony takes place December 4.

Hosts Sam Claflin and BIFA winner Kosar Ali announced the 2022 BIFA nominations, including former BIFA recipients Emma Thompson, Jessie Buckley, Florence Pugh, and Alice Birch among them. Two Paul Mescal films, “Aftersun” and “God’s Creatures,” are among the top-nominated films, with Mescal in the running for both Best Joint Lead Performance and Best Supporting Performance for the respective films.

Charlotte Wells’ “Aftersun” and Georgia Oakley’s “Blue Jean” led the nominations at the 2022 British Independent Film Awards (BIFA) with 16 and 13 nods respectively.

Sebastián Lelio’s “The Wonder” followed with 12 nominations, Oliver Hermanus’ “Living” nine and Peter Strickland’s “Flux Gourmet” seven.

From this year, the awards are permanently going gender neutral for acting categories with the traditional best and supporting actress and actor awards being replaced by best lead performance, best supporting performance, best joint lead performance — for performances that are the joint focus of the film — and best ensemble.

The nominations were revealed at London’s Everyman Broadgate cinema by hosts, actors Sam Clafin (“Peaky Blinders”) and Kosar Ali (double BIFA winner for “Rocks”).

Aftersun and Blue Jean are leading the nominations for the 2022 British Independent Film Awards, unveiled on Friday.

Florence Pugh (The Wonder), Emma Mackey (Emily), Paul Mescal (who got nods in two categories: best joint lead performance for Aftersun and best supporting performance for God’s Creatures), Letitia Wright (The Silent Twins), Bill Nighy (Living), Emily Watson (God’s Creatures) and Emma Thompson (Good Luck to You, Leo Grande) are among the nominees in the now gender-neutral acting, or performance, categories.

Organizers highlighted that it was “a strong year for women filmmakers and performers,” adding: “Women dominate performance, writing and directing categories.”
