Controversial drama “Nitram” dominated the prizes at the Australian Academy of Cinema & Television Arts (Aacta) film awards on Wednesday. Leaving little room for celebration of any other achievement in the past year, “Nitram” swept to eight awards.
These included the most major prizes — best film, best directing and best original screenplay — as well as all four acting prizes.
The film painstakingly depicts the build-up to a real-life mass shooting that took place in Tasmania. Many people had questioned whether the events were too painful to be retold and whether making a film would make a hero of the perpetrator. “Nitram” deflected those criticisms by spelling the shooter’s name backwards and by avoiding any on-screen violence.
“Nitram” premiered in competition in Cannes in July and won the lucrative top prize at August’s CinefestOZ festival. It is now streaming on Stan, the Ott that was a backer of the project.

Like many viral videos before it, The Crazy Nastyass Honey Badger is as hilarious as it is inexplicable. In the clip, dating back to Jan. 2011 and counting 89 million views to date, a character named Randall narrates Nat Geo Wild footage of a honey badger. In a campy tone with an emphatic New York accent, Randall recounts how the animal mercilessly chomps on snakes, mice, and bees. "Look, it's getting stung like a thousand times. It doesn't give a shit, it just -- it's hungry. It doesn't care about getting stung by bees."
Sensing an opportunity, Randall -- whose real name is Christopher Gordon -- seized his moment of virality, ultimately building it into a brand of sorts, with honey badger-themed merch, a mobile app, and even his very own book, Honey Badger Don't Care: Randall's Guide to Crazy, Nastyass Animals.
More recently, Gordon has also sought to branch out from a platform perspective.

Sue Milliken and Bruce Beresford (centre) with the cast of ‘Ladies in Black.’
Bruce Beresford’s Ladies in Black has grossed $11.4 million in seven weeks, encouraging Sony Pictures, which acquired the worldwide rights, to start devising plans to release the comedy-drama in offshore markets.
“The film was always required to establish itself here first before leveraging that success internationally,” Sony Pictures Releasing executive VP Stephen Basil-Jones tells If.
Produced by Sue Milliken and Allanah Zitserman, the 1959-set film is heading for $13 million here and in New Zealand is about to surpass $NZ1 million, which Basil-Jones rates as a superb result, particularly considering Oz films often struggle when they cross the ditch.
In Los Angeles last week he discussed with his colleagues rolling out the film, which stars Julia Ormond, Angourie Rice, Rachael Taylor, Ryan Corr, Alison McGirr, Noni Hazlehurst and Vincent Perez, in the UK and North America. Also he...

Women working at a fancy Sydney department store in 1959 are the subjects of “Ladies in Black,” an uneven dramedy directed and co-written by veteran Australian filmmaker Bruce Beresford. After establishing an interesting picture of conservative Anglo-Australian values clashing with worldly views brought to the new land by post-war immigrants, “Ladies” is let down by a screenplay lacking the sharp wit and emotional depth to bring its characters and themes fully to life. Attractively packaged, optimistic to a fault, and well performed by an ensemble including Julia Ormond and rising local star Angourie Rice, “Ladies” should register as pleasant enough entertainment for general domestic audiences, predominantly older females, although offshore prospects look iffy.
Set in the Sydney of Beresford’s youth and based on the 1993 novel “The Women in Black” by his University of Sydney contemporary Madeleine St John, “Ladies” unfolds in the golden rays of summertime leading up to Christmas.

Cpac staffers were doing damage control on Friday after they discovered attendees waving Russian flags emblazoned with “Trump” during President Donald Trump‘s speech at the conference.
So where did the flags come from?
Ian Walters, a spokesman for the American Conservative Union (Acu), which runs the Cpac each year, confirmed in an email to People that a man named Ryan Clayton was responsible for distributing the flags. Walters added that the man pictured below, an intern at the Acu, confiscated the flags from Clayton before he was removed from the conference by organizers.

Why have we gone with a full sized image of the cover of the first issue of Mark Millar and Sean Gordon Murphy's new comic book Chrononauts? We will get to that in a mo'. It is very interesting stuff. What is also interesting is that in a report over at Deadline Universal has already optioned the comic for producer Chris Gordon and his production banner. The comic only just debuted this week. That's it. One issue so far. Optioned! According to Murphy's Twitter feed Universal optioned this way back in August. Morgan himself has penned the last five Fast & Furious films. Things did not start off okay with Tokyo Drift but got steadily crazier with the four after that once Justin Lin took over and...

One of the words that was used most frequently when describing "Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes" was "surprise," and with good reason. After all, the previous attempt to bring the long-running science-fiction franchise back to life was a nightmare, a truly terrible film that is a narrative disaster even among the narrative disasters that mark many of Tim Burton's lesser films. It seemed like Fox had limped along trying to get an "Apes" movie made for so long that they were willing to try anything. Scott Frank came close to getting a film make called "Caesar," and it sounded like he was on the right track. His basic idea started with a Fox-mandated remake of "Conquest Of The Planet Of The Apes," but went in a very different direction. His film was designed to be a hard-science story about what might happen if we made the advance...

I absolutely love everything about this new clip from Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. The effects are flawless to the point you don't even question them, you only marvel at the scene with a sense of dread, more so for those of us that remember the Koba character from Rise of the Planet of the Apes, when he was played by Christopher Gordon. In the sequel he's played by Toby Kebbell and, well, just give it a watch for yourself. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes hits theaters on July 11. yt id="Itnj-k0TRB0" width="500" Set 15 years after the events of 2011's Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes will focus on a growing nation of genetically evolved apes led by Caesar (Andy Serkis), threatened by a band of human survivors of the devastating virus unleashed a decade earlier. They reach a fragile peace,...

Apparently, 20th Century Fox is monkeying around with the Oscars in two categories: Fox is conducting an Oscar campaign for Andy Serkis for Best Actor after playing the first animal protagonist in a live-action film, and that role was Caesar in the box-office hit Rise of the Planet of the Apes co-starring James Franco and Freida Pinto. I do hope Andy does get the Oscar. Recognition should also go to the other ape actors for playing these smarter than average simians: Terry Notary who played chimps Rocket and Bright Eyes, Karin Konoval as Maurice the orangutan, Richard Ridings as Buck the gorilla, and Christopher Gordon as Koba the bonobo. The studio is also campaigning for an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects. Rise of the Planet of the Apes is exceptional for bringing motion capture actors in real world settings instead of being inside a motion capture volume. by guest blogger Eric M.

Six months ago, the world was introduced to the illustrious honey badger — sorry, I mean, “The Crazy Nastyass Honey Badger,” an indefatigable creature who really does not give a s—. You know who else don’t give a s—? The denizens of Comic-Con, a famously audacious crowd who think nothing of parading in public in all manner of crevice-hugging, skin-revealing costumes. So we here at EW.com had a brainstorm: What if we released Randall, the man who so famously narrated the viral “Honey Badger” video, into the wilds of the San Diego convention center during the height of Comic-Con craziness?...

Evanescence are set to return in October with their first album in more than five years, according to frontwoman/mastermind Amy Lee.
In a new interview with Billboard, Lee says that the follow-up to the band's multiplatinum The Open Door is nearly complete — they're putting the finishing touches on it in Nashville — and is scheduled to hit stores on October 4 through the band's longtime label, Wind-up Records.
And, as is the case with seemingly everything Evanescence, there was certainly no shortage of drama surrounding its creation ... including an 18-month hiatus Lee took from the group at the conclusion of the Door touring cycle.

It seems that all of Hollywood and the music community are banding together to help those affected by the tsunami and earthquake in Japan. Lady Gaga and Katy Perry are just two examples, with Gaga and her little monsters raising more than $250,000 for relief efforts, and fellow pop star Katy Perry donating funds from her tour merchandise.
Now the Black Eyed Peas are getting in the game. They hope that their music video for their track "Just Can't Get Enough" will raise awareness and funds for those who need help. The guerilla-style video was shot over three days in Japan one week before the country was hit by the natural disaster.
"It was the easiest video I ever shot because it was us living our lives," Fergie told "Entertainment Tonight.
