Composer Blake Neely called his score for Apple TV+’s Masters of the Air a tribute to his mentor, the late Michael Kamen. Kamen gave Neely his first job as an orchestrator on Band of Brothers, the first in Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks’ World War II series trilogy.
“It’s a love letter to Michael,” Neely said, choking up at Deadline’s Sound & Screen Television live-music event talking about Kamen, who died in 2003. “I got my start in this business because of Michael Kamen. On Band of Brothers I was one of his orchestrators. Then we lost him.”
The producers of The Pacific asked Neely to work with Hans Zimmer and Geoff Zanelli. Neely did so reluctantly, but stopped producer Gary Goetzman in his tracks when he began asking Neely to collaborate again on Masters.

Fathom Events, the premier name in specialty distribution, is partnering with New York-based Paper Canoe Company to bring the new fantasy film Man and Witch: The Dance of a Thousand Steps to theaters nationwide this summer, we’ve learned this week.
Coinciding with the 40th Anniversary of The NeverEnding Story, the film marks the long-anticipated return to the big screen of that film’s iconic Childlike Empress, Tami Stronach, in her first film role since the Fantasy classic. The feature debut of veteran comedy director Michael Hines (the long-running Scottish cult comedy Still Game), Man and Witch is a labor of love from producer and star Stronach and her husband, co-star, and the film’s writer Greg Steinbruner.
A throwback to the films that captured the imagination of a generation, Man and Witch follows a lonely goatherd (Steinbruner) who, having been cursed at birth to never take a wife, makes...

Exclusive: Fathom Events has acquired the fantasy throwback film Man and Witch: The Dance of a Thousand Steps, set to be released nationwide in theaters sometime this summer.
The project marks the return to the big screen for The NeverEnding Story star Tami Stronach, who played the Childlike Empress in that 1984 fantasy film. In Man and Witch she portrays the titular witch alongside her husband Greg Steinbruner, who stars as the titular man.
A passion project for the couple, Man and Witch—inspired by their own love story— was produced under their Paper Canoe Company banner, with Steinbruner also serving as screenwriter. And to make it a complete family affair, the couple’s daughter Maya also stars in a role that’s described as a “powerful being who is not of this world.”

Composer Geoff Zanelli is the man behind the music of Showtime’s “The First Lady,” the anthology series documenting the political lives of Michelle Obama (Viola Davis), Betty Ford (Michelle Pfeiffer) and Eleanor Roosevelt (Gillian Anderson). Zanelli won an Emmy for his score of another historical project, 2005’s “Into the West” which focused on American expansion during the 1800s. However, the composer tells Gold Derby that the history is not what really interests him. “I’m not really a history buff,” he declares. “I’m a story buff and I’m a character buff, and that’s what I’m interested in.” Watch more of our exclusive video interview with Zanelli above.
Zanelli argues that he only needed to look at the performances of the three leads for inspiration. “I can’t think of a composer that wouldn’t want to get a phone call from someone saying we have...

Emmy-award winning composer Geoff Zanelli is slated to compose the music for “The First Lady,” premiering on Showtime. The new hour-long anthology drama follows the lives of three of America’s First Ladies and stars Viola Davis as Michelle Obama, Michelle Pfeiffer as Betty Ford and Gillian Anderson as Eleanor Roosevelt.
Zanelli served as composer of films such as “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales,” “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil” and “Christopher Robin,” and he won an Emmy award for his work in the Steven Spielberg and Dreamworks miniseries “Into the West.” He also was nominated for HBO’s “The Pacific,” another Spielberg collaboration.
“I’ve had the honor of writing music for ‘The Pacific’ and ‘Into The West,’ both shows about distinct times in America’s history, but nothing as intimate as ‘The First Lady,'” Zanelli said. “We’re so up close and personal in this show.

There is nothing remotely entertaining about any aspect of the new thriller Fatale, starring Michael Ealy and Hilary Swank. It is a film that ultimately has nothing new to add to the genre nor does it feign to even be a competent entry to the same.
Following a passionate one-night affair, Derrick (Ealy) is subject to watching his supposed perfect life slip away as the other woman, Valerie (Swank), who intwines herself into his life via a murder investigation that threatens to unravel his entire life.
Unfortunately, that is about as interesting as the film ever manages to get. This apparent Fatal Attraction (1987) wannabe never finds anything resembling solid footing as it plows through its overly expository first act to set up the illicit affair between the two main characters, forgoing even the pretense of likability in any of the principle characters.

Swiftly following his suspenseful home invasion thriller, The Intruder, director Deon Taylor delivers Black & Blue: a chase and evade, corrupt cop action flick that’s pithy but by-the-numbers due to flat characters, slack execution and a banal central concept, yet is bolstered slightly by a well-paced plot.
The set up introduces Naomi Harris’ rookie cop Alicia, who is accosted by racist police officers while out on a morning jog. This opening suggests a compelling drama with substantial issues is about to unfurl, but these themes are soon supressed as the story curtails into clichéd urban crime thriller terrain with a double-crossing cop plot.
Alicia accidentally films a murder on her body camera and is then hunted by the killers who want the footage before she can share it. What follows is a fast and flawed action/chase confrontation that repeatedly derails then re-finds its feet to potter on perfunctorily before stumbling once again.

It’s kind of funny that, just a few years ago, Frank Grillo was in “The Purge: Anarchy,” in which he struggled to survive the night against morally corrupt civilians with a 12-hour license to kill, and now he’s playing a cop tripping off a limitless authority to murder in “Black and Blue.” It’s this same professional-pedestrian throughline to violence that is a major theme in this prosaic police drama from director Deon Taylor (“The Intruder”).
Corrupt cop narratives aren’t exactly fresh on screen, and Taylor’s film doesn’t shy away from blatant callbacks to other more innovative entries in the genre. For instance, composer Geoff Zanelli (“Traffik”) uses a piece that recalls the thunderous “Sicario” score, while Taylor and screenwriter Peter A. Dowling (“Flightplan”) borrow from the classic bloody bathtub scene from “Training Day.”

Question: If you’re a cop movie coasting on a dynamic central performance, how fast do you need to move to hide the fact that plot-wise, you’re little more than a bargain-basement Training Day? The reliably terrific Naomie Harris — Miss Moneypenny in the last three Bond films and a knockout as the junkie mom in the Oscar-winning Moonlight — stars as Alicia West, a rookie African-American police officer working her first three weeks on the beat in New Orleans. A timely yet undercooked action-thriller about police corruption and racism, “Black and Blue” cuts to the chase from its very first, promising sequence. Along the beats of Lecrae’s social injustice-themed “Welcome to America,” Alicia West (Naomie Harris) jogs through the middle-class streets of a suburban New Orleans neighborhood, only to be stopped and harassed by a pair of suspicious white cops, interrogating her with excessive force for no reason. It’s not long before the cops realize that “she is a blue,” a part of their team, and let her go; though with palpable arrogance. It’s clear that they would face no consequences, even after illegally slamming one of their own against a fence. Their privilege happens to be standard operating procedure.
It’s a powerful scene, all too real in today’s world where amateur cell phone videos of similar or worse cases of police brutality continue to go viral.

Big-budget Korean-made animation “Red Shoes and the Seven Dwarfs” has been set up for a wide international release through a slew of local distributors. The film, a modern English-language retelling of “Snow White,” features the voices of Chloe Grace Moretz, Sam Claflin and Gina Gershon as Snow White, Merlin and the Witch Queen, respectively.
Sales company Finecut has licensed it to Lucky Red for Italy, Kino Swiat for Poland, Soundspace International for India, Gulf Film for the Middle East, Bf Distribution for Latin America, and Golden River Intercine for Vietnam.
Finecut is nearing a deal for North America, which it hopes to solidify after the completed film’s screening this week in the Berlin Film Festival’s European Film Market. Once confirmed, that would allow the other distributors to set release dates.
The film was written and directed on a $20 million budget by Hong Sungho (“Wonderful Days”). Production was handled through Korea’s Locus.

The latest in a rather long and profitable string of animated properties getting the live action treatment, Christopher Robin opts to do things a little bit differently. Instead of leaning in to the child audience, a good portion of this family film looks to get in good with the parents. The flick may even challenge younger viewers with its meditative pace at first. Nostalgic parents though, they’ll probably dig on it. After all, Winnie the Pooh (and Tigger too) are staples of youth. Opening this weekend, Christopher Robin is the newest and most artful in Disney’s quest to showcase all of their classic properties. This movie looks at title character Christopher Robin (Ewan McGregor), who spent his childhood playing with his toys and loving life. Living playthings like Winnie the Pooh (voice of Jim Cummings), Tigger (voice of Cummings as well), Eeyore (voice of Brad Garrett), Piglet (voice...

Did we really need the studio behind the “Star Wars” relaunch to make a movie telling middle-aged men to stay close to their childhood toys? That’s the underlying message of “Christopher Robin,” a partially live-action sequel to the lovely “Winnie the Pooh” cartoons that’s a colossal disappointment on many levels.
It’s a slow, sluggish and whimsy-deficient movie that seems designed to entertain neither children nor adults, and the film’s script opens a Pandora’s Box of a plot twist (more on that in a moment) that that narrative then brushes off. And while many people admitted to weeping from the trailers, the final movie never packs the emotional punch that should be inherent to the material.
What we’re left with is a “Hook”-style mid-life crisis movie aimed at kids, designed to shame parents who spend too much time at the office and not enough with their families.

There’s a scene in “Shadowlands,” the 1993 portrait of novelist C.S. Lewis, in which a young boy is excited to discover the giant wooden wardrobe that inspired “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.” He throws open the door and reaches through the coats hoping to find Narnia … only to feel cold, hard wood at the back of the armoire. Disney wouldn’t dare undermine one of its franchises with such a scene, and yet, with “Christopher Robin,” it’s made a movie that feels similarly disenchanting — the latest and least of the studio’s live-action reboots of a widely adored cartoon.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) has announced the 145 scores eligible in the Best Original Score category, includeing work from “Jackie” and “La La Land.” The latter film, a musical directed by “Whiplash” helmer Damien Chazelle, picked up the Los Angeles Film Critics Association’s award for Best Music earlier this month; “Jackie” was the category’s runner-up. Notably absent, meanwhile, are “Arrival” (which just landed a Golden Globe nod), “Manchester by the Sea” and “Silence.”

Johnny Depp channels Leslie Phillips in his latest outing, Mortdecai. But is he successful? Not really...
Your enjoyment of Mortdecai is likely going to be based on one thing: how much you can stand late period Johnny Depp. If you still find his faux-British sauntering thing endearing and enjoyable, you’ll probably have a good time. If however, like me, you’ve been growing tired of it since the second Pirates Of The Caribbean movie, you might find it a bit of a chore.
Based on author Kyril Bonfiglioli’s series of cult novels, Depp plays Charlie Mortdecai, an cartoonish upper crust art dealer-slash-conman, with a mansion in Oxford and staring bankruptcy down the barrel. When a rare Goya painting is stolen, old acquaintance and MI5 agent Alistair Martland (Ewan McGregor) throws Mortdecai a bone – retrieve the painting and he’ll clear his tax debt. Another Emmy winner has boarded National Geographic’s Killing Kennedy. Composer Geoff Zanelli will score the November TV movie, which stars Rob Lowe and Ginnifer Goodwin as the presidential couple. Zanelli won an Emmy in 2006 for his score to the TNT miniseries Into the West. He was also nominated for scoring 2010’s HBO miniseries The Pacific, another foray into American history that reteamed him with executive producer Steven Spielberg. Among Zanelli’s other credits are The Odd Life of Timothy Green and 2007’s Shia Labeouf thriller Disturbia. Killing Kennedy is NatGeo’s follow-up to Killing Lincoln, which aired in February to

ComicCon offers all kinds of experiences for attendees. You can stay completely in the world of film or immerse yourself in comics or even spend the weekend exploring tutorials and self-help panels. This year, due to a number of factors and in a pleasant surprise, my Con ended up being very music-heavy. I had the opportunity to talk with several film and television composers about their work, their process, and what being a composer in this industry means.
Versatility is essential for a career in film and television composition, given the range of projects out there. One composer I spoke with, iZLER, is currently working on Revenge and Shameless. Another, Chris Tilton, recently finished composing the music for the revamp of The Sims (mostly orchestral) and is currently at work on the new fall series Almost Human (mostly electronic). Cindy (Jennifer Garner) and Jim (Joel Edgerton) are desperate to be parents. However, when they’re told by their doctor that this won’t happen naturally, they decide to indulge their dreams one final time by burying a box in their back garden filled with all the personality traits their ideal child would bear – kind, honest to a fault and musical, to name a few. Overnight, a magical storm occurs and Timothy (Cj Adams), a young boy with leaves on his ankles, is thrust into Cindy and Jim’s life.

With the feature Hansel & Gretel Get Baked releasing February 19th On Demand and in select cities on February 22nd via Tribeca Film, we thought it time to bring you our interview with the flick’s composer, Corey Allen Jackson.
Prior to becoming the recipient of the Bmi Award for Scoring for Motion Pictures and Television from the University of Southern California, 44-year-old Jackson studied music composition at the La Schola Cantorum in Paris, France, and to date has racked up an impressive list of genre scores, including those for the Steven R. Monroe-directed horror flicks It Waits, Sasquatch Mountain, Left in Darkness, I Spit On Your Grave (2010) and the upcoming MoniKa, among others.
We recently chatted with him regarding his process as well as his approach to scoring director Duane Journey’s Hansel & Gretel Get Baked.

Cinelinx celebrates The Odd Life of Timothy Green Blu-ray!
The Set-up
A couple desperate to have a child bury their written wishes in a box in their garden, only to have them spring to life in the form of a young boy, Timothy.
Directed by: Peter Hedges
The Delivery
Judging by the trailer, I expected The Odd Life of Timothy Green to be one of those rare films that sucked you in to its quirky, orignal world and provided a modern fairy tale. Unfortunately, that's not what you get. This fantasy/drama from screenwriter/director Peter Hedges is an uneven affair, primarily because it fails to completely sell the viewer on the fantasy premise.
Hedges, nominated for an Oscar for writing About a Boy, has been behind a number of character-driven drama/comedies, including What's Eating Gilbert Grape and Dan in Real Life. Somehow, Timothy Green never reaches their level.

The Oscars are a little over two months away, and with so many fantastic films released throughout this year, the anticipation surrounding the announcement of the nominations next month is running on high.
So far, we’ve had the shortlists for the Best Animated Feature, the Best Visual Effects, and the Best Documentary categories.
Now the Academy has announced the list of 104 films that are eligible in the Best Original Score category, and it’s going to be very interesting to see what makes the final cut come nominations time next month.
I think Hans Zimmer’s score for The Dark Knight Rises is, hopefully, a lock, because it is amazing. I also loved James Horner’s score for The Amazing Spider-Man, but can’t decide whether or not I think it will earn a nomination.
Alexandre Desplat has three films in the running this year, with Argo, Rise of the Guardians,...

As far as I'm concerned, the two most memorable scores of the year belong to Cloud Atlas and Beasts of the Southern Wild. That said, I made an egregious and unforgivable mistake when filling out my Critics' Choice nominations and forgot to include not one of them, but Both of them! Shame. I feel it. Now I have to hope my fellow Bfca members came through where I failed. However, we will discuss Critics' Choice nominations more on the upcoming episodes of the RopeofSilicon podcast, for now we're talking Oscar as the Academy has released a complete list of all 104 original scores competing for Best Original Score at the 2013 Oscars. I have not yet posted my predictions for Best Original Score and while I am making a fuss above concerning Cloud Atlas and Beasts of the Southern Wild, I think both of those stand a very strong chance at a nomination this year.

The holiday shopping season is in full swing, and just in case you were hoping Walt Disney Pictures wouldn’t add to the burden on your wallet, I hate to, but have to disappoint you. With three more shopping weeks left until Christmas Day, they’ve got two new Blu-ray/DVD combos for our perusal, The Odd Life of Timothy Green and Finding Nemo, both of which were among their big early-fall releases. Of course, the Pixar entry was getting a 3D re-release after its original 2003 release, but still, it’s a notable release because now you can finally claim ownership of every Pixar feature film.
I almost feel bad for not wholeheartedly loving The Odd Life of Timothy Green, an extraordinarily sincere and earnest family film about a childless couple who, one night, discover that their wishes and prayers to become adoptive parents has come true in the form...

It’s in the title – The Odd Life of Timothy Green is, well, odd. But it is those oddities and the unexpected twists and turns that make this story memorable. Timothy (Cj Adams) is not your average child so bringing this character and his world to life required composer Geoff Zanelli to think outside of the box. Organic materials like dirt, wood, and leaves (of course) play a big part in not just Timothy, but all the character’s lives (and their futures) so it is no surprise that Zanelli took a more stripped down and inventive approach when creating the music for this film. Zanelli’s score is both magical and jaunty, much like Timothy himself, and creates a unique texture that helps make some of the more “out there” moments of the film still feel grounded in real emotion. I spoke with Zanelli about how he approached creating this score, what...
