In his latest podcast/interview, host Stuart Wright talks to writer/director Hope Dickson Leach about her debut feature film The Levelling.
A stunning debut feature by writer-director Hope Dickson Leach, starring Ellie Kendrick (Game of Thrones) and David Troughton (The Archers). Against the backdrop of the floods that devastated her home, Clover (Kendrick) returns to her family farm to confront her estranged father, Aubrey (Troughton). Shadowed by ill-remembered conflicts and unspoken regrets, the pair set out to heal their fractious yet still loving relationship. Dickson Leach showcases her burgeoning skill as a filmmaker to watch, displaying a remarkable ability to craft drama from silence and inference. Troughton gives a finely tempered performance, perfectly matched by Kendrick’s extraordinary presence in the breakout role of the year.
The Levelling is on iTunes, Amazon Instant, Google, BFI player, Curzon Home Cinema, Sky, FilmDoo and the Peccadillo player; available through peccapics.com...

It'll take some finding, but one of the best films of the year is in UK cinemas today. Here's our review of The Levelling...
When the UK box office chart comes in next week, I’d expect Alien: Covenant to be comfortably ensconced in the top slot, with the likes of Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol 2, Beauty & The Beast and The Boss Baby scrapping over what it leaves behind. And I’d wager that, with a limited screen count, comparably tiny promotional spend, and little more than word of mouth to send it on its way, The Levelling will do well to get anywhere near the top 20.
In truth, it took a bit of digging just to be able to get to review the film, let alone find it on a cinema screen around the country. But this is the kind of production that needs film lovers to get out and push,...

A bleak backdrop of Somerset scenery amid an atmospheric abyss of grief and guilt are just some of the underlying themes in Hope Dickson Leach’s feature film debut.
The Levelling follows trainee veterinarian Clover Catto (Game of Thrones’ Ellie Kendrick) who returns home to her family farm following the death of her brother in what appears to be a suicide. Upon returning she encounters her estranged father (David Troughton) who is now a shadow of his former self. It is this troubled reconciliation over the loss of a loved one that forms the film’s central conceit, which allows these two central characters to slowly dissect their family’s turbulent past.
Because The Levelling starts with Clover’s return to the farm under the most tragic of circumstances it establishes a melancholic mood from the offset that the film never breaks from. The farm is chaotic...

In December 2013 the rains began. The residents of the Somerset Levels looked on anxiously as the ground became waterlogged and rivers swelled into torrents. Soon a huge swathe of land was submerged, with catastrophic consequences for those who live and work upon it. Anger soon flared up, directed at a government that had cut funding for flood defences and at insurers dragging their heels on paying out.
This is the landscape of The Levelling, a grim little first feature by Hope Dickson Leach that uses the floods as a backdrop for exploring themes of guilt, grief, family and a person’s connection to the land they walk upon.
We enter this world six months after the flood and see it through the eyes of Clover (Game of Thrones alumni Ellie Kendrick), a veterinary student returning home in the unhappiest of circumstances. In her absence, her father Aubrey (David Troughton) has...

In two weeks, vampires, cannibals, Halloween frights and more will grace the screen at the Muvico Theater in Rosemont, Illinois for Bruce Cambell's Horror Film Festival. Now a telekinetic kid and and an apocalypse have joined the killer lineup, as both June and JeruZalem will make their U.S. premieres at the festival.
Press Release: "Chicago, Illinois (August 6, 2015) – The second annual Bruce Campbell Horror Film Festival presented by Wizard World, running August 20 – 23 at the Muvico Theater in Rosemont, Illinois (9701 Bryn Mawr Ave., Rosemont), is proud to announce the addition of two more films to the already bursting schedule.
June, starring Casper Van Dien (Starship Troopers) and Kennedy Brice (The Walking Dead), tells the story of nine-year-old June (Brice), who has been shuffled in and out of foster homes for years. Though she tries to be good, no matter where she goes a trail of chaos and terror seems to follow.

With writer/director David Robert Mitchell's Cannes-premiered "It Follows" bringing in over $16 million at the domestic box office on a slim $2 million budget, the theatrical market seems ripe for another arty horror movie hit to arise. So which of this year's festival favorites could follow (no pun intended) in "It Follows'" footsteps? With the close of the 3rd annual Stanley Film Festival on Sunday, below I've pegged six buzzed-about horror titles from this year's three major festivals so far (Sundance, SXSW and Stanley) that could become the next unlikely breakout in theaters. Read the previous part in this series, Doctor Who: the film careers of Patrick Troughton and Tom Baker, here.
In March 1981, as he made his Doctor Who debut, Peter Davison was already one the best known faces on British television. Not only was he the star of both a BBC and an ITV sitcom - Sink Or Swim and Holding The Fort - but as the young and slightly reckless Tristan Farnon in All Creatures Great And Small, about the often humorous cases of Yorkshire vet James Herriot and his colleagues, he had cemented his stardom. While we didn't see the Fifth, Sixth or Seventh Doctors in the flesh during The Day of the Doctor there's a possibility that they might still have featured somewhere. It's possible that, on set, Peter Davison, Colin Baker and Sylvester McCoy refused to let Zygons be Zygons.
As with much of the anniversary programming, once you're done with being merely incredibly entertained by the Pythonesque brilliance and sequences involving K9 and Lisa Bowerman haunting Steven Moffat's dreams, you can then embark on a game of 'Spot the Reference'. People are turning up dead in the canal in Victorian Yorkshire, their bodies in varied states of petrifaction and their skin a lobster red. By Kieran Kinsella
Earlier this year Acorn Media bought the rights to the British detective series Foyle’s War. The cast and crew are currently working on a new series of the war time drama but in the interim Acorn Media have put together a new DVD box set of the Best of Foyle’s War.
The show centers around Detective Chief Inspector Foyle who is doing his best ignore the ravages of war and focus on solving grizzly crimes. Michael Kitchen plays the lead role and he is in the mold of classic British actors and he is well suited to playing the stiff upper lipped Dci Foyle. Kitchen apparently selected the six stories that are featured in the six disc set. The cast involvement in the DVD doesn’t end there. Actor who made his name at Joan Littlewood's Theatre Workshop and appeared in the Beatles films, making firm friends with the Fab Four
Victor Spinetti, who has died of cancer aged 82, was an outrageously talented Welsh actor and raconteur who made his name with Joan Littlewood's Theatre Workshop and found fame and fortune as a friend and colleague of the Beatles, appearing in three of their five films, and with Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor in Franco Zeffirelli's The Taming of the Shrew (1967).
It was while he was giving his brilliantly articulated and hilarious "turn" as the gobbledegook-shouting drill sergeant in Oh, What a Lovely War! in the West End in 1963 – he won a Tony for the performance when the show went to Broadway – that the Beatles visited him backstage and invited him to appear in A Hard Day's Night (1964).

It seems like only yesterday that the BBC in their infinite wisdom decided to cancel the East End based hospital drama Casualty 1909 so that money could be set aside for a big budget sci-fi drama called Outcasts. Well things didn’t quite go to plan for the BBC and Outcasts turned out to be the biggest white elephant since Babar and lo and behold here we all are again watching a new East End based hospital costume drama. I’ll admit that I am a militant Casualty 1909 fanatic but I won’t let my bitterness about the demise of that show cloud my judgement when reviewing this quality piece of drama.
