Bruce Kessler, who directed episodes of shows including The Monkees, It Takes a Thief, The Rockford Files, McCloud and The Commish when he wasn’t driving race cars, designing boats or circling the globe in a yacht, has died. He was 88.
Kessler died Thursday at his home in Marina del Rey after a brief illness, his brother, author and columnist Stephen Kessler, told The Hollywood Reporter.
Survivors also include his wife, actress Joan Freeman, perhaps best known as the love interest of Elvis Presley’s character in Roustabout (1964). She and Kessler were together for 54 years and married for 33.
Kessler served as second-unit director on Howard Hawks’ Red Line 7000 (1965), an action film about stock cars that starred James Caan, before embarking on a three-decade career as a director for television.
His credits included The Flying Nun, Adam-12, Marcus Welby, M.D., Get Christie Love!, Baretta, Switch, CHiPs, The A-Team, The Greatest American Hero,...

She was 82. Farrell died on May 15 of natural causes at a hospital in Orange County. Her death was only recently discovered by relatives, who posted the news to Facebook, but they were unsure of the cause, as per Deadline.
Farrell had an extensive resume, but is best remembered for the film ‘It’s Alive’, in which she played the mother of a murderous deformed infant.
She also had roles in the films ‘The Stunt Man’, ‘Lone Wolf McQuade’, and ‘Can’t Buy Me Love’ (1987).

Sunday’s SAG Awards ceremony will be a streaming event for the first time on the Netflix YouTube channel. One of the highlights each year is the special In Memoriam segment. It’s been a particularly rough year with over 100 deaths of prominent actors and actresses who were likely members of SAG/AFTRA. Show producers typically are able to include approximately 40-50 people in a tribute.
Among that group will certainly be Oscar winners Louise Fletcher, William Hurt and Irene Cara, plus nominees Angela Lansbury (a SAG life achievement recipient) and Melinda Dillon. Emmy champs Mary Alice, Kirstie Alley, Leslie Jordan, Ray Liotta, Stuart Margolin, Robert Morse and Barbara Walters.

Max Maven, the influential magician and mentalist, and character actor Andrew Prine, who starred in many Westerns, both died earlier this week. Maven was 71, while Prine was 86. According to Deadline, Maven passed away at his home in Hollywood on Tuesday, November 1, after a two-year battle with glioblastoma. Born Philip Goldstein on December 21, 1950, in Ithaca, NY, the famous magician created the Max Maven character in the mid-1970s, often appearing on television magic shows to perform “interactive” mind-reading tricks. Always dressed in black and sporting a widow’s peak, Maven became an iconic figure in the world of magic. He appeared in countless TV programs, including the lead role on Fox’s Count DeClues’ Mystery Castle and guest spots on General Hospital, Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Mork & Mindy, and many more. Maven also featured in the highly-rated NBC special The World’s Greatest Magic in 1994 and returned for subsequent editions...

William Holden commands a newly formed commando group in “The Devil’s Brigade,” available by Kino Lorber on Blu-ray. On the heels of the successful “The Dirty Dozen” from the previous year, “The Devil’s Brigade” is based on the 1966 book by Robert H. Adleman and Colonel George Walton. It chronicles the true events of the 1st Special Service, a joint American and Canadian commando unit assigned to the United States Fifth Army. Inspired by true events, the movie follows the standard tropes of this type of action adventure men- at -war movie. A rag-tag group of soldiers are brought together for a mission, they initially mistrust each other, get into a fight, train together, get into another fight this time working together against another group, graduate from their training and then deploy on their mission to fight the enemy.

For me, The Lords of Salem is unequivocally Rob Zombie’s greatest achievement as a filmmaker to date. Don’t get me wrong, I have a deep-seated love for many of his other films, but there is something about Lords that just hits me deep in my soul every time I revisit it, which admittedly has been a lot over the last five years. A haunting portrait of pain, addiction, the cruel inevitability of fate, Zombie’s ambitious return to original material after his Halloween films was a triumphant one in my eyes, a reminder that in terms of modern horror filmmakers, there is no one making movies quite like Rob Zombie. And that’s what I have always appreciated about his work.
For the uninitiated, The Lords of Salem begins in the year 1696, when Margaret Morgan (Meg Foster) and her coven of six took to the outskirts of Salem,...

Anybody that appreciates good theater and good moviemaking will be in awe of Arthur Penn’s marvelous visualization of this tale of a determined woman achieving the impossible — teaching a child that can neither see nor hear. The knock down, drag ’em out scenes between Anne Bancroft and Patty Duke are unique, to say the least.

The Eyes of Laura Mars (1978) was an unpopular thriller with a clever premise. Laura would have visions whenever a killer attacked someone, and she witnessed the murders through his eyes. Naturally, TV had to take a crack at the premise, which brought us Mind Over Murder (1979), a thriller that adds a few wrinkles to the basic premise and ends up being the more enjoyable of the two.
Originally airing on October 23rd as part of The CBS Tuesday Night Movies, Mind Over Murder bore down against NBC Tuesday Night at the Movies and ABC’s Three’s Company/Taxi/Hart to Hart lineup. Not hard to tell where the majority of viewers planted their eyeballs this night, but those who stayed with “the eye” were treated to a mostly effective thriller with some genuinely unsettling moments. You shouldn’t have too much Tripper in your diet, after all.

There aren’t a lot of horror and sci-fi titles arriving on Blu-ray and DVD this Tuesday (there are four, to be exact), but the few we do have to look forward to are an eclectic and entertaining bunch nonetheless. Scream Factory is giving HD overhauls to both Death Becomes Her and the cult classic Sssssss this week, and Christmas is coming a bit early this year by way of Michael Dougherty’s Krampus, which hits Blu-ray and DVD on April 26th. Our last release for this week is a pair of 1970s underground classics, Crypt of the Living Dead and House of the Living Dead, which arrive together on DVD courtesy of Vinegar Syndrome.

A haunted house film is a tough sell. No masked stalker, no creatures that eviscerate and certainly no zombies lurching down those shadowed halls. A single setting, a dark secret, a group of people terrified by something is usually your standard template, and even the best haunted house flick doth not stray from the formula. So the trick is to convince the viewers once you get them inside – something that the low on budget, high on conviction, and seldom talked about The Evil (1978) accomplishes admirably.
Barely distributed in May of ‘78 by Roger Corman’s New World Pictures, The Evil was made for $700,000 Us and came and went very quickly. The filmmakers complained about the paltry distribution, but I’m sure Corman turned a profit somewhere down the line – he usually did. So from the modest budget, to the generic sounding title (why not just call it Horror Movie?) to the not exactly topical sub genre,...

Following the massive success of Jaws (1975), producers were chomping at the bit to replicate its grosses. Far too many movies to mention here, but suffice it to say that most were stinkers, and none could put a dent box office – wise in the hull of the Orca. However, one little film somehow managed to not only rake in big bucks in its wake, but paid, ahem, ‘homage’ to the soon to be Universal classic. William Girdler’s Bad Bear Bonanza Grizzly (1976) follows it so closely I’m amazed Jaws doesn’t have a big black snout rammed up its grey finned keister. Regardless of its inspiration, Grizzly is a B movie blast.
Released domestically in May of 1976 by Film Ventures International (and internationally by Columbia Pictures), Grizzly brought in a whopping $39,000,000 Us against a $750,000 budget. An amazing performance at the box office, with no help whatsoever from critics who derided the film as derivative,...

The Town that Dreaded Sundown (1976)
Written by: Earl E. Smith
Directed by: Charles B. Pierce
Cast: Ben Johnson (Capt. J.D. Morales), Andrew Prine (Deputy Norman Ramsey), Dawn Wells (Helen Reed), Charles B. Pierce (Patrolman A.C. Benson), Robert Aquino (Sherriff Otis Barker), Jimmy Clem (Sgt. Mal Griffin), Jim Citty (Police Chief R.J. Sullivan), Cindy Butler (Peggy Loomis)
If I had seen this film, it’s been a fleeting memory, and my recollections of it were sketchy to non-existent. I had to watch it when I saw it on Netflix. This happens to be one of the granddaddy’s of the slasher film genre when there was no genre at all. At this particular point in 1976, there was only one other, and that was “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre”. No “Halloween” yet, and “Friday the 13th” was even further down the line. My expectations...

Violence, torture, voyeurism, gang-rape, murder, nudity, and epic levels of misogyny…..it must be time for another Late Night Grindhouse!!!
At The Hi-Pointe Theater (1005 McCausland Ave, St. Louis) this Friday and Saturday nights (February 7th and 8th) at Midnight, the guys at Destroy the Brain are presenting a 35mm print of Centerfold Girls, a remarkably skanky gem from 1974. Andrew Prine, decked in saddle-shoes, a hideous leisure suit, and a shag haircut, stars in Centerfold Girls as Clement Dunne, a kooky puritanical nerd who sets out to murder a year’s worth of centerfold girls from a nudie mag. His motive is altruistic: He wants to save them from a life of posing naked, but his method, ‘saving’ them by slicing them to ribbons with a straight razor, won’t get him into heaven. The film itself is kind of an anthology, divided into three acts, each concerning one of the...

Writer Lee Gambin calls them Natural Horror films, other writers call them Revenge of Nature or Nature Run Amok films and writer Charles Derry considers them a type of Apocalyptic Cinema.
Of course we’re speaking of one of the great horror subgenres for which we’ll employ writer Kim Newman’s tag: The Revolt of Nature.
Since the end of the 1990s, lovers of animal attack films have been subjected to copious amounts of uninspired Nu Image, Syfy Channel and Syfy Channel-like dreck like Silent Predators (1999), Maneater (2007) Croc (2007), Grizzly Rage (2007) and a stunning amount of terrible shark attack films to name a few that barely scratch the surface of a massive list.
These movies fail miserably to capture the intensity of the unforgettable films they are imitating and the recent wave seems to carry with it the intent of giving the Revolt of Nature horror film a bad name.

If so track The Town That Dreaded Sundown, a fact-based blend of police procedural, slasher flick, and redneck comedy from 1977. In addition to having one of the great movie titles of the ‘70s, The Town That Dreaded Sundown is a realistic, chilling, and effective thriller that Shout Factory has released on Blu-ray just ahead of its 2014 remake.
‘The Phantom Killer’(aka ‘The Moonlight Murderer’) was a real life fiend who committed a series of murders in Texarkana, a border town between Texas and Arkansas, in 1946. Examples of savant characters include David Warner’s bat expert Phillip Payne in Nightwing, Zelda Rubinstein’s spiritual medium Tangina in Poltergeist, Matthew McConaughey’s dragon slayer Denton Van Zan in Reign of Fire, Lin Shaye’s paranormal investigator Elise Rainier in Insidious, and Otto Jespersen’s monster killer Hans in Trollhunter.

Chicago – Another week of Blu-ray, DVD, and streaming options for you to peruse courtesy of HollywoodChicago.com’s “What to Watch.” Every week, we gather a select few of the most recent Blu-ray & DVD releases, toss in at least one On Demand option we’ve seen, and present them in a checklist order for you to knock out through Amazon, iTunes, Netflix, or good, old-fashioned Blu-ray (yes, that sounds funny to me too). This week’s is the strongest yet by far. Everything in here is worth a look, all the way down to #9. This is just the order you should watch ‘em in more than anything else.

There are some films I haven't seen in my 40 years of life that it seems inexcusable to have missed. Many of those have crossed my path recently thanks to Scream Factory. They've made it a habit to dig up the cult classic gems of the past and give them a much-deserved upgrade to high-definition. Two such movies I failed to see over the years are The Town That Dreaded Sundown and The Evictors.
The Town That Dreaded Sundown is based on a true story that occurred in 1946. Famed Texas Ranger J.D. Morales is called into Texarkana by Deputy Norman Ramsey after one young couple are beaten and tortured and another murdered on back county roads. Ramsey and Morales both suspect the incidents are tied together. They combine the forces of the local police and the Texas Rangers to catch the "Phantom Killer" before he can strike again.

Fans of horror will recognize the getup immediately: a man wearing overalls and a sack cloth on his head tied at the neck. Most would conjure Jason from Friday the 13th Part 2, but Charles Pierce did it first with his police procedural The Town that Dreaded Sundown. A true rarity on the home video market over the years, Scream Factory reaches even farther into the cult drawer to dig up this bizarre little film released from 1976.
The small town of Texarkana, which straddles Texas and Arkansas was haunted by a vicious serial killer who claimed the lives of five people in 1946. Dubbed “The Phantom Killer” by the media, this once peaceful town was transformed into a fearful community, full of paranoid residents who were armed to the teeth by the second set of murders. Texas Ranger J.D.Morales (Ben Johnson) is called upon to help solve the series of killings,...

Chicago – At its core, “The Burning” is quite clearly an attempt to cash in on the already-waning slasher trend inspired by “Friday the 13th” but it’s a much better film than most of the creatively barren genre. It joins “The Town That Dreaded Sundown” as the latest entries in the increasingly spectacular Scream Factory line of Blu-rays. Both are worth a look.
Rating: 3.5/5.0
“The Burning” plays off the “Cropsey” legend (so brilliantly detailed in the documentary of the same name) of a burned figure in the woods coming back to enact revenge on the kids stupid enough to linger in them. It’s essentially a standard slasher flick (lots of P.O.V. with creepy music, T&A, future stars like Jason Alexander and Fisher Stevens) but there’s a darker tone here, punctuated by the intense violence and makeup effects from the great Tom Savini. It’s before...

When even Joss Whedon can’t nail a character, you know there’s a problem. For decades now, film and television has been struggling to take Wonder Woman from the comics and bring her to a wider audience. So far, they’ve managed the Super Friends and the delightfully awful television series with picture-perfect Lynda Carter. However, there are scores of failed attempts beginning with the truly awful William Dozier-produced try out footage through last year’s cringe-worthy attempt from David E. Kelly.
Perhaps the most maligned of the attempts is the ABC Movie of the Week, Wonder Woman, which aired once in March 1974 and did well enough in the ratings for a series to be considered but was seriously retooled into the Carter vehicle. Thanks to Warner Archive, that 73 minute effort is now available for completists everywhere.
Yes, she’s Diana, princess of the Amazons and sent to man’s world.

"Based on actual events" is a phrase you'll hear in a lot of movie trailers and see emblazoned across endless horror movie posters, but the truth about the "truth" is this: it's bullshit. For example, both Psycho's Norman Bates and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre's Leatherface claim to be "loosely based" on the notorious monster known as Ed Gein. So while it's probably true that the writers of both stories used their knowledge of Ed Gein to create a creepy villain, it's not like either film is a re-telling of the actual Ed Gein story. (For that you'll want to check out 1974's Deranged.)
And most "based on actual events" horror movies lack even the tangential connection that Psycho and Chainsaw do: someone once heard about a terrible exorcism gone wrong in South America, and voila: instant "fact-based" horror movie. That's not to say the statement is outright marketing b.

MGM is set to remake Charles B. Pierce's 1976 crime mystery The Town that Dreaded Sundown, which originally starred Ben Johnson and Andrew Prine " Variety reports that MGM had no comment, however they've been asking agents for possible takes from writers for the reboot of the film first written by Earl E.
