The darkly-comic movie Ten Tricks is a real head-scratcher for several reasons. The title refers to two kinds of tricks – the bordello business kind and the type in a magician’s act – woven together in a sequence of overlapping snippets. Then, casting against type, the madame of the former is played by the chronically (in a good way) wholesome Lea Thompson, who could still play a cute ingenue at age 60. And it’s shot in black-and-white with a mostly unknown cast (some of whom play multiple roles) by first-time writer/director Richard Pagano, apparently on a budget so limited that “craft services” probably meant everyone brown-bagging it. The script mixes comic elements with a lot of sadness and frustration surrounding the assortment of sexual transactions we see.

The Voice blind auditions continued, with showstopper Sisaundra Lewis getting the coveted four-chair turn around and 'The Brothers Walker,' an identical twin duo, making it on Team Usher.
The Voice blind auditions part 3 kicked off with a four-chair turn around for Ryan Whyte Maloney, 33. A rocker currently trying to make it in Las Vegas, Maloney got Blake Shelton, Adam Levine and Shakira to turn around almost right away with his rendition of Journey’s “Lights.” Usher followed towards the end of the song, but it didn’t matter. In the end, Maloney went with Blake because he said, that’s what his son would tell him to do.
Next up was the sweet family guy, Deshawn Washington, 23, who left college after one semester to help take care of his family. Deshawn brought some fun and light to The Voice stage with “Twistin’ the Night Away” by Sam Cooke. Surprisingly,...

Three more drama pilots from NBC have secured the services of casting directors, Backstage has learned. “The Sixth Gun,” based on the comic created by Cullen Bunn and Brian Hurtt, will be cast by Laura Schiff and Carrie Audino. The comic book series is set on the Western frontier shortly after the end of the Civil War. When a lost mythical gun resurfaces in the possession of a young girl, dark forces will stop at nothing to obtain it. In addition to the series “Mad Men,” “Nikita,” and “Touch,” Schiff/Audino is also casting the AMC pilot “Turn.” A shoot date and location for “Sixth Gun” has not been determined. Casting team Rick Pagano and Debi Manwiller will cast pilot “The Blacklist,” about the world's most-wanted criminal, who turns himself in and offers to help the FBI track down his accomplices — on the condition that he be allowed to work...

With every new piece of info that emerges surrounding director Randall Miller's rock 'n' roll tribute “Cbgb," the more the film simply certifies itself as having a brilliant casting director in Richard Pagano. After Alan Rickman, Malin Akerman and Rupert Grint all found unconventional but intriguing roles as various mainstays of the famous New York club, the production continues its streak of inspired choices by adding a talented musician, a sitcom star, and a period-drama actress, among others, to the list.
The nearest anyone has come to portraying reptilian rocker Iggy Pop onscreen was Ewan McGregor's loose character riff on him in “Velvet Goldmine,” though a different Elijah Wood-starring biopic came close. However, The Hollywood Reporter states Miller's film will change all that, as Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins has agreed to step up to the challenge of bringing the role to unsettling life. Hawkins is clearly already halfway there physically,...

If you’re looking to make a demo reel or have your current one updated, look no further than Joe Gressis at Secret Handshake Entertainment.
Joe has been editing for years and he is the go-to-guy for several big agencies when they want their actors to update their reels.
Why is Joe so great? Because he is also a producer (A Little Help starring Jenna Fischer and Chris O’Donnell will be released soon) and looks at reels from that perspective.
And check below for some reels of well-known actors!
At what point should an actor get a reel?
Pretty quickly. As soon as they’ve got enough material to support it, basically, because so much of casting is now done online and with DVDs. They go through so many people that as soon as you have it the better. As soon as you have the material to support. And sometimes,...

Rick Pagano is a well-rounded casting director. He boasts credits in big-budget studio extravaganzas, intimate independent fare, popular television series, and acclaimed stage productions. But that's not all there is to his artistic life: Pagano is also a playwright and director, exploring complex characters with actors from yet another angle. His current production, a two-character play called Women With Dogs, details the highs and lows of an evolving relationship. "It's a play that's a good example of the kinds of things I love in actors," he says. "It's about the simplicity of making connections with people and being willing to turn corners in the middle of a scene — how interesting it is to have an emotional change in the middle of a scene instead of just playing one color the same way throughout a scene." Pagano is usually around for performances of the play, currently running at the Lex in Hollywood,...
