- The movie I end up with is the movie I aspired to make.
- I don't really analyze my process. I do know that if it's not right, I won't move on. I'm tenacious to a fault about that.
- [on Tom Cruise in Cuộc Chiến Luân Hồi (2014)] Tom innately understands that audiences come to the theatre not to watch a god but to see a good movie, and he will do everything in his power to make the film as great as possible. Nobody takes the trust of the audience more sacredly than him. When I'm working on a film, I think about how it will play with a tiny audience of friends whose opinions I respect, basically a 40-bloc radius from my apartment in Manhattan. Tom is thinking how it will play with the entire planet Earth.
- [on Tom Cruise] People forget that behind the celebrity, he's a brilliant actor who's been in some of our favorite movies. He's extraordinarily talented and his range is incredible.
- [people turning up for a wet film premiere of Cuộc Chiến Luân Hồi (2014) at 5am] It's a testament to Tom Cruise's star power.
- Paris is very close to my heart. It's the most beautiful city in the world, but on Cuộc Chiến Luân Hồi (2014) I got to showcase it in a completely different light.
- Cuộc Chiến Luân Hồi (2014) was such an ambitious movie and a personal one. It was a labor of love for us all.
- [on the struggle around the title of Cuộc Chiến Luân Hồi (2014)] So the book was called "All You Need Is Kill". Japanese. I was making a comedy - an action comedy, and "All You Need Is Kill" didn't feel like it was the tone of the movie I had made. The studio wanted to call it "Edge Of Tomorrow", and I wanted to call it "Live Die Repeat". I fought vehemently and lost. And then when the film came out and people loved it but the box-office wasn't as good as it should have been, I really railed into the executive at Warner Bros who'd insisted that "Edge Of Tomorrow" was the better title. (...) I was like, 'It clearly is not. You were wrong.' I committed the cardinal sin of telling somebody in Hollywood when they're wrong, like, literally - I ended up having to call the person and apologize for pointing out that they were wrong. And they started titling it the title I always thought it should have, which is "Live Die Repeat". But they tiptoed around it, and when we make the sequel, it'll be permanently titled "Live Die Repeat". The sequel will be Live Die Repeat and Repeat. [Aug.2017]
