French crime films of the 1950s and ’60s often centered on professional criminals who followed codes of honor that put them on a more-or-less level moral playing field with the detectives tracking them down. Whether it was Jean Gabin’s aging gangster Max in Jacques Becker’s Touchez Pas au Grisbi or Alain Delon’s steely eyed assassin Jef in Jean-Pierre Melville’s Le Samouraï, these men had a sophistication and moral grounding that minimized the violence and chaos they caused. They were dangerous, even deadly, but only when they needed to be and in a way the cops could wrap their heads’ around.

Leonis Productions, the Newen Studios-owned French banner created by Jean-Benoit Gillig, is developing a raft of international shows on the heels of “Liaison,” Apple TV+’s first French original.
The company reached a milestone with “Liaison,” a thriller series created and entirely penned by Virginie Brac (“Spiral”) and directed by Stephen Hopkins. Vincent Cassel and Eva Green lead a cast that includes Peter Mullan, Gérard Lanvin, Daniel Francis, Stanislas Merhar, Irène Jacob, Laëtitia Eïdo, Eriq Ebouaney, Tchéky Karyo, Bukky Bakray and Thierry Fremont.
“It’s a sprawling French-British thriller set against the backdrop of Brexit, and there’s a metaphor between the love tragedy playing as the primary plot and the political tragedy embodied by Brexit unfolding in the background,” said Gillig.

"Can you trust this man... after what you did to him?" Oooh - what did she do?! Apple TV has revealed an official trailer for a thriller series titled Liaison, which will be available later this month on the streaming service. The descriptions for this so far are all a bit vague: An international struggle between governments and the hackers who just want to watch it all burn. So it's kind of like Mr. Robot, or not? Something else? It stars Vincent Cassel and Eva Green as the main characters - former lovers caught in the middle of it all. Liaison is a high-stakes, contemporary thriller exploring how the mistakes of our past have the potential to destroy our future, mixing action with an unpredictable, multilayered plot - "espionage and political intrigue play out against a story of passionate and enduring love." "If something bad happened to me, what would you do?" Netflix has unveiled an official trailer for a French action thriller titled Rogue City, written & directed by Olivier Marchal. Set in the city of Marseille in the South of France, the film is about a "complex case of rivalry between gangs and a group of cops." Caught in the crosshairs of police corruption as well as Marseille's warring gangs, a loyal cop must protect his squad by taking matters into his own hands. Described as a "dark and intense thriller." Starring Lannick Gautry, Stanislas Merhar, Kaaris, David Belle, Jean Reno, Claudia Cardinale, Gérard Lanvin, Patrick Catalifo, Moussa Maaskri, and Catherine Marchal. This film looks like the most cliche and derivative gritty French action thriller, with all the usual cheesy lines and scenes. But damnit - stills looks entertaining. 7. The Truman Show
Directed by Peter Weir
Written by Andrew Niccol
USA, 1998
Apart from the obvious death-match featured in The Hunger Games, the film’s text is thematically provocative, its allegorical elements highlighting the way the “Games” amplify today’s obsession with reality television. Perhaps one of the greatest cinematic commentaries on all-pervasive media manipulation is in Peter Weir’s The Truman Show, starring Jim Carrey. For Carrey detractors, The Truman Show proves his talent reaches far beyond physical humour. Carrey remains in complete control throughout, commanding and exhibiting the charm and charisma needed for a role that calls for much sympathy and likeability.
Truman Burbank lives a happy life, but what he doesn’t know is that his life is completely manufactured within a giant domed television studio. He’s been the focus of a reality TV show ever since his birth; filmed, observed, scrutinized every second of his life.

Amitiés sincères
Written by Stéphan Archinard, Marie-Pierre Huster and François Prévôt-Leygonie
Directed by Stéphan Archinard and François Prévôt-Leygonie
France, 2013
The motives for telling a lie are rarely the same from one episode to the next. Fear of shame, fear of persecution, selfishness, desire to reach an objective that otherwise would fall out of one’s grasp, there are more than a few very human and imperfect reasons why one would deliberately omit the truth. There is such a thing as a white lie however, by which the truth is kept hidden in preference of fabrication in order to not harm another’s feelings. What happens when white lies are told to someone whose personal pet peeve is the practice of lying itself? Directors Stéphan Archinard and François Prévôt-Leygonie use that very idea as the inspiration for their drama-comedy, Amitiés sincères.

We could have done with the abridged version of French gangster Edmond "Mamon" Vidal's criminal career
French cop-turned-director Olivier Marchal's flashback-heavy crime drama is very loosely based on the memoirs of real-life gangster Edmond "Mamon" Vidal. Here the ageing Mamon (played gracefully by Gérard Lanvin) flits between reflecting on his time as leader of the Lyons gang – a crew who pulled off a series of daring heists in the early 70s – and trying to protect his lifelong friend Serge (Tchéky Karyo), who's on the run from a rival mob boss. But there's little heat on Marchal's mean streets: we don't get to know any character other than Mamon, so his sense of betrayal is justified by default and his revenge is played out methodically over decades of boring murder. There's one code at play here: a hood's gotta do what a hood's gotta do. Unfortunately, we gotta watch him do all of it.

Directed by Elio Petri
Written by Tonino Guerra, Giorgio Salvioni, Ennio Flaiano and Elio Petri
Italy,1965
The 10th Victim was the first film to offer up the concept of a TV show wherein people hunt and kill one another for sport and to expand the idea into a satire on gameshows. Set in the 21st Century, the government and the private sector have joined forces to create a solution to crime by giving it a profitable outlet titled “The Big Hunt,” a popular worldwide game show in which contestants are chosen at random to chase one another around the world in a kill or be killed scenario. The winner of the first round moves on to the next. After ten wins, a player is retired from the game and gets a cash prize of one million dollars, but very few make it that far.

Chicago – Excluding its rather unnecessary epilogue, Fred Cavayé’s latest thriller, “Point Blank,” clocks in around one hour and fifteen minutes. It’s a fast paced film, but it oddly never feels rushed. All of the set-pieces and dramatic revelations are present and executed to perfection. What’s lacking here is the extra padding so often found in bloated Hollywood blockbusters.
Though Paul Haggis’s “The Next Three Days” aimed to imitate the expertly paced tension of a Cavayé’ picture by remaking his 2008 effort, “Anything for Her,” the original managed to tell the story in half the time and was twice as entertaining. As long as Americans can accept reading subtitles, there is no reason to remake Cavayé’s transcendently entertaining work, which has the power to thrill audiences on any continent.
Blu-ray Rating: 4.0/5.0

France cinema has a low-cost blockbuster on its hands – a rugby story that could almost have been set in the Welsh valleys
If you saw a 50-year-old man running naked around the Arc de Triomphe at midnight last summer, that would have been Philippe Guillard. He was making good his promise to run a naked lap of the Parisian landmark if more than 500,000 people went to see his film about life among the rugby people of France's south-west. His assessment turned out to be too modest by half.
Since its release at the start of the year more than a million people have flocked to see Le Fils à Jo, a film which is to its sport and its region as the 1996 British film Brassed Off was to brass bands and the South Yorkshire coalfields: a comedy with soul and roots and humanity, and a deep love of its subject and its setting.

Director: Fred Cavayé Writers: Fred Cavayé, Guillaume Lemans Starring: Gilles Lellouche, Roschdy Zem, Gérard Lanvin, Elena Anaya, Mireille Perrier, Claire Perot, Moussa Maaskri Point Blank is a dark, relentless, and stylishly directed new French crime thriller that drops an innocent man into a paranoid world of kidnapping, corruption, hopelessness, and betrayal. Director Fred Cavayé seems equally inspired by the unsettling, claustrophobic world of American film noir and that rich period of French crime films in the eighties and early nineties that gave us masterworks by Luc Besson (La Femme Nikita) and Jean-Jacques Beineix (Diva). Yet for all of its momentum and sheer kinetic energy, the film loses sight of the essentials--character, emotion, and motivation--far too much of the time, resulting in a film that isn’t nearly as thrilling or as suspenseful as it should be. Samuel (Gilles Lellouche) is a nurse’s aide who works in a hospital where...

Director Olivier Marchal continued to build his reputation as France’s master of thrillers and his fourth film A Gang Story looks to be heading to U.S. art houses. Variety reported that The Weinstein Co. continued talks to acquire domestic theatrical distribution rights to A Gang Story, to be released in France as Le Gang des Lyonnais. Marchal co-wrote the film with Edgar Marie and follows gang leader Edmond Vidal (Gérard Lanvin) nicknamed Mormon, as he reflects back on his younger days, the rise of his Lyon-based gang and his frequent clashes with police. Marcal shot his fourth film in Lyon with Gérard Lanvin, Daniel Duval, Dimitri Storoge as the younger Vidal, Valeria Cavalli, Stéphane Caillard, Patrick Catalifo and Tchéky Karyo in the cast.

Save for its title, Fred Cavayé’s “Point Blank” is unrelated to the 1967 lone-gun thriller. The new movie certainly deserves its in-your-face title for the sheer velocity of its pacing, but viewers familiar with the Lee Marvin classic will pine for its style and intelligence while shaking their heads at the ludicrousness of Cavayé’s namesake movie.
This new “Point Blank” gets off the blocks fast with an opening montage of a foot chase through Parisian streets as gangsters stay on the heels of a mysterious fleer. The nifty sequence ends with a gunshot and motorcycle accident that leaves the fleer wounded and whisked off to the hospital. The nervy yet smooth filmmaking on display in...

From opening chase to brilliant climax, Fred Cavayé's gripping follow-up to Pour elle is well worth travelling for
One of Time Out's movie critics, David Jenkins, began a piece last week by asking: "How far would you travel to see a film?" In his case, the answer was a day trip to Lille to see The Tree of Life, Terrence Malick's Palme d'Or winner. Owing to some dispute over distribution rights, it wasn't being shown in Britain, and the Calais multiplex was only screening a French-dubbed version. Fortunately, the rights problem has been resolved and the picture opens here on 8 July.
Well, I'm just off on holiday to a remote corner of Värmland, a Swedish province largely denuded of cinemas. Torsby, Sven-Göran Eriksson's hometown to the north of where I'll be, has a main street called Biografgatan but no longer has a biograph. So I was ready...

Kaboom (15)
(Gregg Araki, 2010, Us) Thomas Dekker, Haley Bennett, Juno Temple, Chris Zylka, Roxane Mesquida. 86 mins
This could be the best teen movie of the year, or at least the horniest, surely. Set on a sunny Californian college campus with a "beautiful people only" admissions policy, it's a poppy pick'n'mix of uninhibited bi-curious couplings (and triplings), hallucinogenic drug experiences and strange, supernatural events, but none of this is treated as in any way edgy or shocking. Instead, it's warm, witty and guilt-free, even as it gets increasingly, apocalyptically bonkers – prime cult material!
Kung Fu Panda 2 (PG)
(Jennifer Yuh, 2011, Us) Jack Black, Angelina Jolie, Dustin Hoffman. 90 mins
Does the sequel do what you'd expect? Do pandas defecate in the bamboo forest? Actually they don't in this anthropomorphised action animation, but it's a fun and lively tribute to old-school martial arts movies with some darker shadings than its predecessor.

This is the Pure Movies review of Point Blank (À bout portant), directed by Fred Cavayé and starring Gilles Lellouche, Roschdy Zem, Gérard Lanvin, Elena Anaya, Mireille Perrier, Claire Perot, Moussa Maaskri, Pierre Benoist and Valérie Dashwood. Methodical in technique, Fred Cavayé's astoundingly astute eye for action-thriller writing/directing makes Point Blank one of the most lean, well-paced and credible international films of the genre in recent years. French film-makers have a born flair for this category, mixing heightened emotion with electrifying suspense, and Point Blank is no exception. But it’s far from formulaic, and is packed with twists and variations on the expected and realistic character responses to keep you totally engaged – forgiving the odd incredulous episode. Imagine Neeson’s Taken, without the added attraction of a big-named star.

Chicago – Just as Steven Soderbergh’s “Che” and Olivier Assayas’ “Carlos” recounted the true tale of a controversial revolutionary over the span of at least two theatrically released pictures, Jean-François Richet’s 2008 double feature “Mesrine” stages the jaw-dropping amount of robberies and prison escapes committed by its titular French gangster. His resumé is impressive, but his life makes for rather redundant drama.
Though Jacques Mesrine was a member of the French Army during the Algerian War and even dabbled in the Quebec Liberation Front, he appears to have been a much more shallow figure than some have claimed, if this film is of any indication. One of his kidnapped victims makes the valid point that if Mesrine truly were a revolutionary, he would’ve taken the lives of his enemies rather than their money.
Blu-Ray Rating: 3.0/5.0
Even Mesrine’s partners become increasingly skeptical, particularly Charlie Bauer, who argues that the...
