This week, Francis Ford Coppola received a standing ovation from more than 150 students after speaking at the U.K.’s top film and television school, The Hollywood Reporter can exclusively reveal.
The legendary filmmaker and Megalopolis director visited the National Film and Television School (Nfts) in Beaconsfield, England, where he offered advice and insight to the audience — and discussed his career-defining moments — during a two-hour “In Conversation” event.
“Francis Ford Coppola’s visit this week gave Nfts students a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to learn from a true master of cinema,” said Nfts director Jon Wardle. “His body of work has inspired a generation of filmmakers.”
The open forum also allowed students to pose questions to Coppola, who is famed for works such as the Oscar-winning Godfather trilogy and Apocalypse Now.

Francis Ford Coppola may just be one of the most well-known and well regarded filmmakers of our time. From The Godfather (1972) to Apocalypse Now (1979), Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992) to The Conversation (1974), his superb filmography still renders him a must-watch for many, even this far along in his career. Expected to be his final film, Megalopolis is as close to a passion project as it comes; self-financed and workshopped since the late 70s, it’s a film that Coppola has had his heart set on making throughout his career. Described as a Roman epic, the story follows genius artist Cesar Catilina (Adam Driver) who seeks to leap the City of New Rome into a utopian, idealistic future, while his opposition, Mayor Franklyn Cicero (Giancarlo Esposito) remains committed to a regressive status quo, perpetuating greed, special interests and partisan warfare. Torn between them is socialite daughter Julia Cicero (Nathalie Emmanuel), the Mayor’s daughter,...

Despite the film’s dismal box office performance, “Megalopolis” star Aubrey Plaza has received plenty of positive reviews about her performance as financial reporter Wow Platinum — and if an interview published by the New York Times Sunday is any indication, that press is well deserved. “It was madness working on that film,” she explained. “My mentality every day was ‘Every man for himself; only the strong survive here.'”
Plaza added that filming with Coppola wasn’t predictable. The director might tell her, “In the next take, you’re a spider” or he might offer a suggestion from his barista. She said, “There were days that I would go to set thinking we’re about to start shooting and instead, Francis would go, ‘I’d like to play a game.'”

After decades in the making — involving several cycles of shelving and revisiting, a personal investment of $120 million, casting scandals, on-set scandals, trailer scandals, and more — Francis Ford Coppola’s passion project, Megalopolis, finally opened in theaters this past weekend. Unfortunately, it’s showing at the box office left much to be desired.
Opening to wide release on Friday (September 27th), Megalopolis brought in only $4 million over its first weekend, seemingly sealing its fate as a box office flop in the face of Coppola’s gamble that self-funding the film would be worth it to not have to deal with studio oversight. As Consequence’s Liz Shannon Miller wrote in her review, the film is becoming “the world’s most expensive cautionary tale when it comes to spending $120 million of one’s own money so that you don’t have to listen to studio notes.”

Box Office: ‘Megalopolis’ Crumbles With $4 Million, ‘The Wild Robot’ Lands at No. 1 With $35 Million
Universal and DreamWorks Animation’s “The Wild Robot” landed in first place on box office charts, taking flight on the higher end of expectations with $35 million from 3,962 venues. Meanwhile, Francis Ford Coppola‘s sci-fi epic “Megalopolis” collapsed in its box office debut, collecting an anemic $4 million from 1,854 North American theaters.
Ticket sales for “Megalopolis” were less than initial projections of $5 million to $7 million, which would have been financially disastrous for the $120 million-budgeted film. By comparison, Kevin Costner’s mostly self-funded $100 million-budgeted passion project “Horizon: An American Saga – Part One” arrived to $11 million over the summer before tapping out with $36 million worldwide. As a result, plans to release “Part Two” were indefinitely paused.
With poor word of mouth (the film received a “D+” grade on CinemaScore), “Megalopolis” opened in sixth place behind three holdover titles and the Indian Telugu-language action film “Devara: Part 1.” Reviews have been wildly divisive with the...

DreamWorks Animation and Universal’s family film The Wild Robot is charming reviewers and audiences alike, boasting both a stellar 98 percent Rotten Tomatoes critics score and a 98 percent audience score, not to mention an A CinemaScore from moviegoers. Thanks to great word of mouth, Wild Robot came in No. 1 with an estimated $35 million.

Megalopolis has been generating headlines for years. First, it was about how legendary filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola had to self-finance his epic sci-fi movie because no studio was willing to touch it.
Then, we heard the director had reportedly fired the majority of the Megalopolis' visual effects team during production, prompting other crew members, including the entire art department, to exit due to what they called an "unstable filming environment."
More recently, Coppola has been accused of acting inappropriately on set, though it's unclear whether there's any truth to the allegations.
Then there was the trailer with AI-generated quotes from "critics" and Megalopolis' 49% score on Rotten Tomatoes which suggested Coppola's supposed magnum opus was anything but the masterpiece he'd promised.
With the movie now playing in theaters, regular moviegoers have chimed in...and wholly rejected Megalopolis. Boasting a D+ CinemaScore, it ranks among the worst-rated wide releases ever and scores lower than any superhero movie.

Universal and DreamWorks Animation’s new film “The Wild Robot” is booting up with a better-than-expected $34 million opening weekend.
Director Chris Sanders’ animated film was originally projected to make between $24 million to $30 million in its opening weekend. The family friendly movie launched with $11.3 million on Friday and will take the box office crown from Warner Bros.’ “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.” Tim Burton’s horror comedy has reigned over the charts for the past three weeks and is on track for second place with $16 million in its fourth week of release.
Francis Ford Coppola’s “Megalopolis” is finally hitting theaters this weekend after premiering over the summer at the Cannes Film Festival. However, it’s on track to make $4.6 million in its opening weekend, less than initial projections of $5 million to $7 million. It’s made $1.84 million so far from 1,854 North American theaters. The film carries a $120 million budget, which was mostly self-financed by Coppola.

Francis Ford Coppola's Megalopolis is a head-scratcher from start to finish, feeling more like a Terrence Malick film than one from the legendary director of Apocalypse Now and The Godfather. While the premise offers an intriguing concept, the muddled storyline and absence of a clear protagonist leave it feeling disjointed. The saving grace, however, comes from the eccentric performances of Shia Labeouf and Aubrey Plaza, which add a spark of unpredictability to an otherwise chaotic film.

Today marks the long-awaited arrival of “Megalopolis,” legendary director Francis Ford Coppola’s first film in 13 years. But the process of getting the experimental epic, about a dreamlike version of New York City where an architect develops the ability to stop time, has been a project over forty years in the making, after Coppola dreamed up the initial idea towards the end of production on “Apocalypse Now” in 1977. Spending years directing work-for-hire films like “Jack” and “The Rainmaker” to fund the ambitious project, a fusion of science fiction with operatic grandeur, Coppola planned to make the movie in 2001, shooting hours of test footage before production halted at least partly due to 9/11.
The day before Coppola’s 80th birthday in 2019, the director announced that the project had been reborn. But without any companies willing to spend the money to finance and distribute the epic, Coppola was forced to take it on himself,...

There is a whole lot going on in Francis Ford Coppola’s latest film “Megalopolis,” from controlling time to drug-induced hallucinations to political schemes. No one could fault you if you got a little lost, and we’re here to help straighten it out.
Now in theaters, the fable is a modern-day Roman epic, literally bringing stories of the Roman empire to New York. Throughout the film, we follow Cesar Catilina’s (Adam Driver) endeavors as he tries to turn The City of New Rome into a utopian megalopolis for its residents.
He plans to do so using Megalon, a new element he discovered — which allows him to also start and stop time — and won a Nobel Prize for. He believes in radical change and improvement. But Mayor Cicero (Giancarlo Esposito) doesn’t share that love of change; he sticks to tradition and status quo, and definitely class systems.

Francis Ford Coppola’s next epic is here, and he’s amassed a pretty huge cast to bring it to life. And odds are, you’re going to recognize quite a few of those faces.
Now in theaters, “Megalopolis” is a modern retelling of the Roman Empire, starring Adam Driver as the man who’s trying to build it. Cesar Catalina (Driver) has a vision for a utopia built with a brand new element that he discovered and won a Nobel prize for. But not everyone wants to see him succeed in doing so.
It’s a pretty thick plot, so we won’t pick that apart here. For now, we’re just going to help you place some of those faces on screen.

Much has been said about Francis Ford Coppola's bonkers, pricey sci-fi epic Megalopolis but social media chatter doesn't necessarily translate into ticket sales and the movie looks set to bomb this weekend.
Earning a dismal $770,000 in previews on Tuesday and Thursday night, The Hollywood Reporter reveals that it's tracking to open between $5 million - $7 million at the North American box office. That's not good for a movie which reportedly cost $120 million to produce before marketing (the campaign included a now-deleted trailer with AI-generated fake quotes from critics).
No major Hollywood studio was willing to finance or distribute Megalopolis in North America after seeing it before the Cannes Film Festival but Lionsgate came on board...and won't be on the hook for distribution or marketing costs. As a result, Coppola looks set to lose a fortune.

Director Francis Ford Coppola reputedly spent 40 years making Megalopolis, raising the $120m budget by selling some of his vineyards. Sadly, both time and money could probably have been better spent elsewhere, because the end result falls squarely in the “interesting failure” camp, rather than being the epic masterpiece he undoubtedly envisioned. Still, it’s not without its moments.
The film takes place in New Rome, effectively an alternate version of New York City. Adam Driver plays genius architect Cesar Catilina, who can seemingly halt the flow of time and who has invented a miracle building material known as Megalon, with which he plans to construct a futuristic cityscape.

Francis Ford Coppola (The Godfather) and his dream project. If it feels like Megalopolis has been talked about countless times over the last 50 years, it’s because the idea was indeed conceived in 1977 and began development a few years later. However, from “debts” to Hollywood after consecutive box office failures to delays caused by terrorist attacks — not to mention a global pandemic — Coppola has been forced to put this unique story on hold decade after decade… until now.

DreamWorks Animaton and Universal’s The Wild Robot started off its North American box office run with $1.95 million in Thursday previews, a solid start for a family animated film. The movie is based on Peter Brown’s beloved bestseller about a robot nicknamed Roz who forms an unexpected bond with an orphaned gosling and other creatures after being shipwrecked on a lonely island.
The critically acclaimed CGI-animated film is tracking to open in the $24 million range domestically, although more bullish forecasters believe it could easily fly past $30 million. But it’s understandable why the filmmakers are trying to temper expectations in suggesting $20 million-plus after last weekend’s Transformers One, another animated PG-rated pic, came in $5 million behind tracking with a $24.6 million domestic launch.

“The Wild Robot,” Universal and DreamWorks Animation’s latest family-friendly, animated adventure, has made $1.95 million in Thursday previews at the box office so far.
Director Chris Sanders’ movie, about a lost robot on a planet overrun by wildlife, is on track to make between $24 million to $30 million in its opening weekend. That should be enough to claim the top slot from Warner Bros.’ spooky sequel, “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” which has been the No. 1 movie for the past three weeks. Tim Burton’s film should take second place in its frame week of release, with an estimated $13 million to $15 million this weekend. Last week’s newcomer, Paramount’s animated origin story “Transformers One,” will have to settle for third place, with a projected $12 million to $14 million after opening in second place last weekend.
“The Wild Robot” stars Lupita Nyong’o as the titular automaton, who is named Rozzum unit 7134 but better known as Roz.

An epic film many years in the making, Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis is simultaneously perfect and also tremendously flawed. There is something powerful at work when a filmmaker as talented as Coppola attempts something as avant-garde as Megalopolis; conversely, there is another equally powerful possibility that the entire endeavor could go completely off the rails and end up a convoluted and befuddling vanity project – which, at times, it unfortunately does.

Megalopolis was a result of Francis Ford Coppola’s unrelenting spirit and hard work. For several years, the critically acclaimed filmmaker tried his best to convince Hollywood to help him work on this masterpiece, but he was met with a series of setbacks that held him away from making this movie for nearly four decades!

‘Megalopolis’ has been a long time coming. Originally conceiving the idea decades ago, Francis Ford Coppola set out on a quest to tell a fable that maps the fall of Rome onto modern America, a cautionary tale about where we’ve been before and where we’re headed. After years of studios turning him away and needing to halt progress in favor of other projects on multiple occasions, Coppola finally decided to sell a good chunk of his winery to fund this nine-figure project himself. Reconciling a story this expansive and a production this huge was a monster task, but it remains to be seen whether this will be the event of the year that would justify a film of this scale and magnitude. Chicago – You can say this for Francis Ford Coppola, He gets an “A” for effort. “Megalopolis” is a project which boasts loads of ambition, but winds up in a narrative cul-de-sac that Coppola never finds a way to create his way out of … he has so many ideas floating around he never manages to establish much momentum because he’s trying to do too much, too often, all at once

“Megalopolis” is an ancient Roman epic set in a slightly futuristic New York (now dubbed New Rome). A visionary architect Caesar (Adam Driver) desperately tries to shed the decaying ruin of the present to fashion a city for the future, while his chief nemesis Mayor Cicero (Giancarlo Esposito) wants to keep things decidedly as they are. Caesar has the curious ability to literally stop time, which proves useful in his quest to remake the city for the next millennia.

The safest and most traditional ingredient is DreamWorks Animaton and Universal’s family film The Wild Robot, based on Peter Brown’s beloved best-seller about a robot nicknamed Roz who forms an unexpected bond with an orphaned gosling and other creatures after being shipwrecked on a lonely island.
The critically acclaimed CGI-animated film is tracking to open in the $24 million range domestically, although more bullish forecasters believe it could easily fly past $30 million. But it’s understandable why the filmmakers are trying to temper expectations and suggest $20 million-plus after last weekend’s Transformers One, another animated PG-rated pic, came in $5 million behind tracking with a $24.6 million domestic launch.

Transformers One is set 300 years before the timeline of live-action movies. It features the untold origin story of Optimus Prime and Megatron. While most fans view them as enemies, the two were once close friends, and the brotherhood was showcased beautifully, captivating fans worldwide. Regardless, Chris Hemsworth, voicing Optimus Prime, left many fans in disbelief, ultimately playing a key role in the film’s immense success.

More family films hitting cinemas this weekend with DreamWorks Animation/Universal’s feature take of Peter Brown’s New York Times bestseller, The Wild Robot, however, unlike Paramount/Hasbro’s Transformers One last weekend, this one is mom/female leaning. Opening weekend at 3,900 theaters is pegged at $20M+.
That’s around the average start for an animated major studio movie in September and not that far from where we saw Transformers One last weekend with $24.6M. Also keep in mind that it’s original animation, and that’s always a lower bar start than established feature cartoons.
Wild Robot will have the vast majority of premium screens with 380 Imax hubs with all showtimes up to primetime. After that time, Lionsgate’s Megalopolis from Francis Ford Coppola will have evening Imax showtimes in key metropolitan locations, repping around 200 of its 1,700 theater count. Francis Ford Coppola drew gasps and groans for a prediction he’s now made about the upcoming presidential election.
The filmmaker joined his friends and collaborators Robert De Niro and Spike Lee for a Q&a livestreamed from New York’s AMC Lincoln Square to 65 IMAX theaters across the U.S. on September 24 before a New York Film Festival screening of “Megalopolis.”
The trio, in conversation with New York Film Festival artistic director Dennis Lim, shared reminiscences from their friendship before Coppola went deep on how “Megalopolis” can be seen as a metaphor for the fall of Rome — and explained why he thinks America is headed down the same path.
“My films are a little prescient, they relate to the future,” Coppola said, noting that people asked him “Why are you making a movie about eavesdropping?” when “The Conversation” came out. And then the Watergate tapes dropped shortly thereafter.

Time has always been kind to Francis Ford Coppola. The legendary filmmaker is no stranger to epic, unwieldy, ruinously expensive films, underappreciated upon release before later achieving classic status. Will his monumental, decades-in-the-making, self-funded passion-project Megalopolis follow a similar path to The Godfather and Apocalypse Now — or will it be more like One From The Heart? Only time will tell. It is certainly a film that requires some time digesting.
Coppola has compared the film to James Joyce’s Ulysses: like that grand experimental novel, it recasts ancient myths in a modern city. And like Ulysses, it is wildly ambitious, conceptually bold, frequently inscrutable, endlessly fascinating, and endlessly frustrating. It is a “fable” about the fall of empire, the parallels between modern America and ancient Rome, power and corruption, art and creativity, the violence of progress versus the cruelty of the status quo. It is, ultimately, a $120 million film about town planning.

Robert De Niro posed a hypothetical that made the audience bust out laughing even as the actor remained utterly stone-faced.
“Just imagine Donald Trump directing this film,” he said at Monday’s New York premiere of Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis. “It’ll never go anywhere, from total craziness. He cannot do anything. He cannot hold anything together … He wants to destroy the country. And he could not do this movie. He could not do anything that has a structure.”
De Niro, Spike Lee and Coppola appeared together in a half-hour Q&a before the screening presented by the New York Film Festival at the AMC Lincoln Square Imax. (The festival kicks off Friday but extended itself for the Imax event given the rare chance to gather prominent guests together with the 85-year-old Coppola.) Francis Ford Coppola got political while discussing his new film Megalopolis on Monday, suggesting that the upcoming presidential election may mirror the downfall of Rome.
At a conversation as part of the New York Film Festival — which was also streamed to 65 theaters across the U.S. and Canada with support from Imax — Coppola was joined by Robert De Niro and Spike Lee to talk about his long journey to making “a Roman epic set in modern America as Rome,” as he described it.
The film follows a conflict between Cesar (played by Adam Driver), a genius artist who seeks to leap into a utopian future, and his opposition Mayor Franklyn Cicero (Giancarlo Esposito), who remains committed to a regressive status quo.

Plot: In a futuristic metropolis named New Rome, the city’s mayor, Cicero (Giancarlo Esposito), battles an idealistic architect named Cesar Catilina (Adam Driver), who wants to create a sustainable utopia.
Review: One of the most unique things about Francis Ford Coppola as a director is the fact that he’s probably the only one I can think of who’s made at least four outright masterpieces and probably an equal number of disasters. For every Godfather, there’s a One from the Heart, but Coppola, to his credit, has never allowed critics or audiences to dictate the movies he makes, and for better or worse, this is exactly the film he wanted. Whether or not anyone else will understand or appreciate what he’s doing is another question. I must admit that even though I can find merit in almost all of his work, Megalopolis escaped me.

Transformers One: Many Won’t Like Chris Hemsworth and Scarlett Johansson’s Alleged Salary Difference
Former Avengers co-stars Chris Hemsworth and Scarlett Johansson have reunited for the animated film Transformers One. Directed by Josh Cooley, the film serves as an origin story for the conflict between Optimus Prime and Megatron, with Hemsworth voicing the former character, previously voiced in the films by the legendary Peter Cullen.

On the other hand, Johansson voices Elita-1, an ally of Optimus Prime. Despite both actors being certified movie stars, their reported salaries for the animated film have a massive pay gap. Francis Ford Coppola is going to go down in history as one of the greatest directors to ever do it. From "The Godfather" to "Bram Stoker's Dracula" and everything in between, the man has gifted us with some of the most beloved films to grace the silver screen. Coppola is back for what figures to be his swan song with his long-gestating passion project "Megalopolis." The only downside is that the film's fate is all but sealed, commercially speaking, and it's not a good one. Coppola's epic is going to bomb theatrically, that much is certain. The only question that remains is just how bad is it going to be? Also, who is going to be on the wrong end of things when the losses begin to pile up?

Earlier this summer, Megalopolis director Francis Ford Coppola joined Letterboxd, the social cataloguing service where members can rate and review films and keep track of what they’ve watched. He hasn’t been too active on the service, but he has given Megalopolis a perfect five-star score. The divisive film has been receiving mixed reviews from critics and audiences, with the average Letterboxd score sitting at 2.9. Coppola also gave five stars to The Last Showgirl, a film directed by his granddaughter Gia Coppola.
Despite the mixed reviews, Megalopolis is clearly a project Coppola is passionate about. He spent decades developing the movie and even put up $120 million of his own money. While it’s a shame the movie wasn’t the universally acclaimed masterpiece that many were hoping it would be, folks can’t seem to stop talking about it. Macaulay Culkin Influenced the Casting of Harry Potter Says Chris Columbus - Main Image

Francis Ford Coppola has been dreaming about making "Megalopolis" for more than 40 years, and now, after decades of starts and stops, he delivers it to us and dares us to make sense of it all. A sprawling, confusing, confounding, messy extravaganza, "Megalopolis" feels like it needs an entire companion textbook to parse out its influences and meanings. Coppola has jam-packed the movie with a million different ideas, drawing on such wide-ranging sources as Ayn Rand's "Atlas Shrugged," Robert Caro's "The Power Broker," and the Catilinarian conspiracy, in which politician Lucius Sergius Catilina tried to seize control of Rome in 63 Bce. Coppola also seems to be drawing on his own work, most notably two of his biggest flops, "Tucker: The Man and His Dream" and the sort-of-musical "One From the Heart."
Having helmed some of the best movies in the history of the medium, Coppola has earned the benefit of the doubt here.

Exclusive: When Francis Ford Coppola sits for a conversation about his new film Megalopolis before it plays the New York Film Festival on September 23, the master filmmaker will be interrogated by two Gotham film fixtures. That will be Robert De Niro, whom Coppola directed to his first Academy Award in The Godfather Part II, and Spike Lee, a lifelong admirer of Coppola who was among the first to see 30 minutes of Megalopolis.
The trio will take part in a conversation moderated by NYFF artistic director Dennis Lim, in an evening the festival is calling an Imax Live presentation, Megalopolis: The Ultimate Imax Experience. The studio is working on a couple other big names to give Coppola a fitting tribute. Doesn’t Al Pacino live in New York, for instance?
The discussion will center around Coppola’s influence and how his films transcend art form, with Megalopolis being his opus.

Francis Ford Coppola compares Shia Labeouf’s Megalopolis method to Dennis Hopper’s on Apocalypse Now
Dennis Hopper is tied to some of the wildest behind-the-scenes stories in Hollywood history, not the least of which stem from Apocalypse Now, with tales ranging from nearly getting into fistfights with Marlon Brando to requesting to be paid in cocaine rather than money. So when Francis Ford Coppola compares Shia Labeouf’s on-set behavior on Megalopolis to that of Hopper’s on Apocalypse Now, it doesn’t exactly feel like a compliment. Only, surprisingly, Coppola means no disrespect.
In promotion of Megalopolis – which, like it or not (read our 5/10 review here), is hitting screens later this month – Francis Ford Coppola told The Telegraph that Shia Labeouf reminded him of Dennis Hopper to a degree with the sort of vibe he brought with him. “Shia has had problems. Actor Shia Labeouf has fallen far from his 2000s heyday, mainly due to a series of abuse allegations and arrests for harassment, disorderly conduct and battery. Labeouf has spent the past few years attempting to rehabilitate his image, including a 2-hour-long interview on Jon Bernthal's podcast in 2022 where he talked about his path to sobriety and his many regrets.
Labeouf has also apologized for a more trivial offense: his trash-talking of director Steven Spielberg in the aftermath of "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull." The 2008 film, which had originally promised to revive the franchise and maybe even set up Labeouf's character as the Indiana Jones of the new generation, was a critical disappointment, and Labeouf didn't handled it well at the time.
"You get there, and you realize you're not meeting the Spielberg you dream of," Labeouf said in a 2016 interview. "You're meeting a different Spielberg,...
