Anees Bazmi’s No Entry managed to do the near-impossible. It was a sex comedy without overt sex and vulgarity. The upmarket, high-profile star cast ensures a high-quality, cleaned-out satirical scenario freed of annoying innuendos. Nonetheless, the swiftly flowing slapstick replete with grossly overblown dollops of mistaken identity and other intensely corny contrivances takes the comedy this farce and no more.
Farcical comedies about infidelity are not alien to Hindi cinema. B.R. Chopra’s Pati Patni Aur Woh gave the late and great Sanjeev Kumar a chance to do the incorrigible flirtatious husband with a deadpan ingenuity that his successors have found hard to replicate. The men are constantly chasing the women, while their spouses are constantly chasing their skirt-chasing husbands. The confusions of infidelity are gross examples of political incorrectness.
Recalling the No Entry experience, Anees says, “No Entry got a lot of love. Everybody started saying that because of No Entry,...

Mudassar Aziz’s Khel Khel Mein is an untameable beast of a film. It is funny, yes. But it is also very sad. It reveals the secrets that are locked in our hearts, or rather in our phones, and how we cannot allow the phone to rule our hearts. That unlimited freedom on the phone is actually a terrible slavery to technology that is destroying lives.
All these ideas are not hammered into the script. Rather, Aziz and his co-writer Sara Brodinar, play a perky precious you-show-me-yours-i’ll-show-you-mine peek-a-boo game of infidelity, creating spaces in confined rooms for intelligent dialogue on how far couples need to respect one another’s space in marriages.
This is assuredly Mudassar Aziz’s most intelligent work, though not all of it works. Akshay Kumar’s roving-eyed oversmart character is a trimmer version of Sanjeev Kumar in Pati Patni Aur Woh.
Perhaps Kumar feels greying...

Directed by Rohit Shetty, the film was an official remake of Sanjeev Kumar and Deven Verma’s Angoor (1982). It’s quite rare for actors to grow up on screen, but Farida Jalal is one such actor who has portrayed an array of characters in the space of the hero’s sister, a mother, and now a grandmother.
While Hollywood has Leonardo DiCaprio, who started his career at the age of 17, India has Rishi Kapoor, Kamal Haasan, Sridevi, and Farida Jalal. All of their careers are textbooks in cinematic longevity.
Farida started her journey at 17 with the film ‘Taqdeer’, a role offered to her by Tarachand Barjatya, grandfather of Sooraj Barjatya. How she was offered her first role has a story of its own, something that rarely happens to artistes. She was a part of the United Film Producers Talent Hunt, which she went on to win, where her co-finalist happened to be the first superstar of Hindi cinema, Rajesh Khanna.

There are a number of stories about how Gulzar, who has been awarded the 58th Jnanpith Award along with Sanskrit scholar Jagatguru Rambhadracharya, became one of Hindi cinema’s most celebrated lyricists after being better known in his years as a struggler after Partition in Mumbai for his expertise in re-painting cars mauled in crashes.
The one that seems most credible, however, has come from him. Despite his skill with car colours, Gulzar’s first love was the written word and he was a regular at the Progressive Writers Association (Pwa), which was then a creative hub of just about every Titan in Hindi and Urdu literature.
It was at Pwa meetings that the undiscovered poet struck up a friendship with lyricist Shailendra, who introduced him to Bimal Roy, who, in turn, told him that he was wasting his time and talent at a car workshop.

Jailing a person was the privilege of the rulers, the one enjoying the high office of the prime minister. It had nothing to do with the excuses that are offered now, such as: disturbing harmony, spreading unrest, hurting religious sentiments, and so on. Books, talks and creativity were banned randomly.
In between, the trend was to jail people. It had nothing to do with public perceptions, but all about the undemocratic way of running a democratic country.

The 78-year-old celebrated actress, who is at the moment busy with the promotion of her upcoming film ‘Gulmohar’, an emotional family drama that plays out in upscale Delhi, said: "Oh my God! Holi used to be celebrated madly in Kolkata. I never tried bhang because that was beyond my capacity, but I’ve seen people doing that."
"But we used to play it in our Tripura house. We used to go to the lake and swim there after playing Holi. After coming back, I would find snails in my clothes or stuck in my hair. It was such fun."

ReviewThe worst Mohanlal film is here. That’s the most succinct and kind review possible for 'Alone'. Mohanlal is the worst thing about this (even worse) Mohanlal film.Sowmya RajendranThe worst Mohanlal film is here. That’s the most succinct and kind review possible for Alone. Written by Rajesh Jayaraman and directed by Shaji Kailas, Alone is about a motivational speaker who moves to a new flat from Coimbatore to Kochi during the pandemic. He then starts hearing voices in the flat and concludes that it is haunted [the flat number is 13A, so what were you expecting?]. He decides to investigate the matter, and by the time he uncovers the truth, I was hearing voices in my head that asked me to run from the theatre as fast as I could. Kalidasan (Mohanlal) is the lucky owner of several colourful T-shirts. His hobbies include getting drunk and calling various people who have inordinate amounts of time and patience to put up with him.

Considered one of the greatest and most influential Indian films of all time (just a glance at the wikipedia page about the film is enough) “Sholay” is a true masala film, a true epic, and a truly impressive production that has stood the test of time even now, almost 50 years after its initial release.
The film begins with Thakur, a police inspector, tasking a man with finding two small-time crooks, Jai and Veeru, who had helped him in the past, proving both their fighting abilities and their integrity. The focus switches on the two and their time in prison and their escape, until the three protagonists are finally united in Thakur’s village in Ramgarh. The now retired inspector asks them to capture a notorious dacoit named Gabbar Singh, who has been terrorizing the area for years, promising them an additional reward of ₹20,000, on top of the ₹50,000 of the bounty for his head.

RohitVerse
Rohit Shetty has created his own Universe, should we call it RohitVerse? The last scene of Cirkus brings a wide smile and takes you back to Rohit Shetty’s claim to fame ‘Golmaal’ franchise. How I wish if he can come up with a film based on this (you have to watch the last scene). Coming back to what you are here for and that is yet again a part of the RohitVerse with most characters that you have seen in previous Rohit Shetty films probably leaving aside just the two leading ladies (Pooja Hegde and Jacqueline Fernandez). After Ajay Devgn, it seems we will get to see Ranveer Singh too as a fixture in RohitVerse.
Cirkus
Set in the late 1960s and said to be inspired from Shakespeare’s ‘The Comedy of Errors’, which was earlier adapted by Gulzar as Angoor (1982) featuring Sanjeev Kumar and Deven Verma in double roles.

‘The Bard of Avon’ can never go wrong. The timeless Shakespeare, 400-plus years after he entertained Queen Elizabeth I and her courtiers, continues to resonate in different ways with each generation. And his ‘Comedy of Errors’ has been a favourite of Bollywood filmmakers.
After Kishore Kumar’s ‘Do Dooni Chaar’ and Sanjeev Kumar’s ‘Angoor’ and a few other forgettable adaptations, comes Rohit Shetty’s ‘Cirkus’, featuring Ranveer Singh playing two sets of identical twins who are accidentally separated at birth. Sadly, though, Bollywood is as bad at adapting as it is at conceiving fresh ideas.
So, what does the film have to offer? Old gags, insufferable jokes, bad acting and a plot that just doesn’t take off. Even when writers Farhad Samji, Sanchit Bedre and Vidhi Ghodgaonkar attempt to Indianise the much-amended tale,...

S S Rajamouli, the maker of the latest international hit, ‘Rrr’, says that costs charged by stars and directors caused this sorry state of affairs where the Hindi film industry is in the doldrums. The stars took the credit when a film succeeded and went on to increase their remuneration.
It is a myth that a star makes a film work. At best, a star, if popular, can only help bring in the initial footfalls. The rest depends totally on other factors, notably the content, which counts the most.
It is a fact that content makes a star out of any actor. Rajesh Khanna, for example, was created post ‘Aradhana’. As for Amitabh Bachchan, he struggled from 1969 onwards when his debut film, ‘Saat Hindustani’, was released. It was only in 1973 that ‘Zanjeer’ turned into a superstar. Earlier, a producer would go for the talent of an actor. Otherwise, actors such as Sanjeev Kumar,...

He carved himself into the history of Bollywood playing – in his first major role – a foul-mouthed, sadistic, and vicious brigand, but there was much more to him than just being Gabbar Singh of “Sholay”. While Amjad Khan’s oeuvre of over 220 films has him playing the villainous ‘heavy’, usually against Amitabh Bachchan, he also excelled in more positive and even comic roles.
And then, he was capable enough to hold a long discussion on various issues with Satyajit Ray.
Take his Filmfare Awards nominations as one metric. Amjad Khan was nominated seven times in the prime of his acting career from 1976 to 1986 – five times for Best Supporting Actor (including two nominations in one year once) and two times as Best Performance in a Comic Role (both in the same year), and won twice in the first category and once in the second.

Noida, Oct 16 (Ians) The spread of mosquito-borne diseases starts alongside the festive season around Diwali. Dengue cases have been rising in recent years and many families in Noida and Ghaziabad have lost their loved ones to this disease.
Even after facing the onslaught of dengue every year, the administration and the health department of both the districts do not seem to be paying any heed. On paper, in both the areas, there is a fierce fight against dengue with the government taking steps like anti-larvae spraying, fogging, cleaning the parks, drains and roads.
If fogging and anti-larvae spraying is done even once a month in their neighbourhood, the citizens consider themselves lucky. So far, 300 dengue cases have been reported in Ghaziabad and 50 in Noida.
The anti-malaria department issued a notice to the primary health centres (Phc) in-charges of Ghaziabad after the larvae of dengue mosquitoes were found in 20 PHCs during a recently conducted survey.

Despite a relatively short life, thespian Sanjeev Kumar stood out for the range and diversity of his on-screen roles. In real life, too, he left an indelible imprint on the countless people he came across. Swaroop Sampat Rawal, who’s still remembered for her role in the sitcom “Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi”, is one of them.
“My father Bachu Sampat was a theatre veteran and Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru had tasked him with starting Int (Indian National Theatre). Those days, Sanjeev Kumar had just started out in Gujarati cinema and he used to call my father ‘boss’,” the actress-turned-educator, who was most recently seen in “Uri: The Surgical Strike”, recalled.
Swaroop Sampat was speaking at the book reading session of Reeta Ramamurthy Gupta and Uday Jariwala’s “Sanjeev Kumar – The Actor We All Loved” at the University of Mumbai’s Department of Communications and Journalism here on Tuesday.

Maya Angelou directed just the one film, Down in the Delta (1998), and Ethan Coen published a book of poetry called The Drunken Driver Has the Right of Way. Kiarostami was a poet, so were Pasolini and Jean Cocteau. Indian cinema has produced a few poet-filmmakers of its own, such as Buddhadeb Dasgupta and Kidar Sharma. But probably the one filmmaker who has also been staggeringly prolific as both a poet and songwriter is Gulzar. The Western world predominantly sees Indian cinema in two extremities: either as the garish vaudevillian spectacle that everyone broadly recognizes as Bollywood, or the stark realistic storytelling by the likes of Satyajit Ray and Ritwik Ghatak. But with at least eleven major...

Satyajit Ray is broadly regarded as one of the greatest directors of all time, and his acclaims support the claim. His works are mostly based on the Bengali language movie industry in India. However, he made two movies in the Hindi language, both based on the works of the famed author Munshi Premchand. “Sadgati,” a TV movie, is often considered amongst Ray’s least impressive movies. His first movie in the Hindi language, nevertheless, is a different story. “The Chess Players” is often included in the conversation of the best Ray films and is frequently said to be one of the most calculated movies made by the director.
