Known as the industry’s acclaimed giant, Martin Scorsese made his name synonymous with quality movies of all genres. His masterpieces include psychological thrillers Taxi Driver (1976) and Shutter Island (2010), crime drama Goodfellas (1990) and last year’s Western hit Killers of the Flower Moon.
However, even if you think that Taxi Driver’s Travis Bickle is literally you, you may have missed Scorsese’s earlier work that also deserves your attention. This unfairly forgotten 1973 drama can beat his most popular films by its rewatchability and overall greatness.
If you think it’s just another movie about mobs confronting other mobs, don’t be misguided. Indeed, the main character Charlie is not as powerful and confident as brutal protagonists of typical crime flicks, the truth is that he has his own Achilles' heel.

The partnership between Robert De Niro and Martin Scorsese has resulted in some of the most highly acclaimed films in Hollywood history, earning them both widespread critical acclaim. But do you know which movie marked the beginning of a groundbreaking collaboration that ultimately led to their success in the entertainment industry?
Robert De Niro was nominated for Best Supporting Actor
Well, it was none other than the 1973 crime drama Mean Streets that has been deemed as culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant to this date. De Niro’s portrayal of Johnny Boy Civello earned him high praise and accolades. However, all this might not have been possible, and this movie would have looked significantly different if De Niro had made a different decision.

Martin Scorsese (who may or may not be making a Frank Sinatra biopic soon) is our greatest living filmmaker. I don't think that's a controversial or even hyperbolic statement; it's just true. The man lives and breathes cinema, and he has one masterpiece after another to his name. But it all started with "Mean Streets." To be clear: "Mean Streets" was not Scorsese's first feature film. His debut film was 1967's "Who's That Knocking at My Door," which began as a student film before Scorsese reworked it into a feature. He followed that up in 1972 with "Boxcar Bertha," a crime flick produced by legendary B-movie auteur Roger Corman.
It was "Boxcar Bertha" that would lead directly to "Mean Streets." The story goes that when Scorsese's friend, mentor, and fellow director John Cassavetes saw "Boxcar Bertha," he told Scorsese: "You've just spent a year of your life making a piece of sh*t.

It’s not often that a doc about the transformative power of cinema will deliberately use bad clips of the movies it’s talking about, but that’s part of the point of this insightful, sprawling film, corralled by director David Hinton. Though the masterpieces made by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger at the height of their big-screen, Technicolor powers were visually impeccable, their subversive emotional power could still pack a punch through a 16-inch TV screen, even from the most scratched, butchered, and washed-out black-and-white prints.
This is, famously, how the young Martin Scorsese discovered The Archers (as the pairing styled themselves), and in this lengthy discourse he gets to position them both as an influence on his own movies and as unsung heroes in the history of world cinema. Now, there are plenty of people who will immediately say that Powell and Pressburger have actually been sung quite a bit,...

It’s sad to say, but death seems to be working overtime as we close out 2023. Following the news that beloved character actor Tom Wilkinson has passed away, come the passing of two more well-loved supporting players in TV and film. Richard Romanus, who played the role of loan shark Michael Longo in Mean Streets, passed away at the age of 80 on December 23rd. Meanwhile, Maurice Hines, the brother of Gregory Hines, has also passed away, also at 80.
Although Richard Romanus had a lengthy career that went back to the early ‘70s, it was his turn in Martin Scorsese’s Mean Streets that remained his most memorable performance. It was his character who, after a run-in with Robert De Niro’s Johnny Boy (who owed Michael money), manned the car that drove up alongside Johnny Boy and Harvey Keitel’s Charlie, leading to the shooting of the loose cannon.

Richard Romanus, who made memorable turns in Mean Streets and The Sopranos, has died at age 80. The actor passed away in a private hospital in Volos, Greece, on December 23, according to The Hollywood Reporter. In 1973’s Mean Streets, directed and co-written by Martin Scorsese, Romanus played Michael, the loan shark who clashed with ne’er-do-well Johnny Boy (Robert De Niro). In the Andy Dougan book Untouchable: Robert De Niro, Scorsese recalled filming the profanity-laden confrontation between Johnny and Michael. “Something had happened between Bobby and Richard because the animosity between them in that scene is real, and I played on it,” the director said, per THR. “They had gotten on each other’s nerves to the point where I think they really wanted to kill each other. I kept shooting take after take of Bobby yelling all these insults while the crew was getting very upset.” Two and a half decades later,...

When Martin Scorsese finally won the directing Oscar for 2006’s The Departed, he inspired a handful of film buffs to point out the supposed travesty implied by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences long ignoring the landmark titles on the filmmaker’s resume in favor of a remake. Few pointed out, or seemed to recall, that America’s most beloved living auteur, was not only no stranger to remakes, but took up the business of remaking, rebooting, and paying homage as a more than honorable foundation for a now-legendary body of work.
New York, New York was essentially a ticker-tape parade for old Hollywood’s Technicolor musical legacy, while Taxi Driver was a tribute either to Robert Bresson’s Pickpocket or John Ford’s The Searchers, depending on which auteur lens (Paul Schrader or Martin Scorsese) you look at it through. The SAG-AFTRA strike has officially ended, and David Harbour is ready to return to Hawkins as the beloved, curmudgeonly police chief Jim Hopper.

A movie’s central character needn’t be someone we admire, but he should probably be someone we’re drawn to, someone we vibe with in sympathetic fascination, who we feel we know and understand even as he crosses over to the dark side. Few movies have lived out that dynamic more cathartically than the underworld dramas of Martin Scorsese.
“Mean Streets,” the tale of low-rung Little Italy mobsters that Scorsese made 50 years ago (I think it’s still his greatest film), is about Harvey Keitel’s ladder-climbing numbers runner, but the most explosive character is Robert De Niro’s Johnny Boy, a self-destructive firecracker who doesn’t “give two shits about you, or nobody else,” a quality that would make him repellent if he weren’t so hypnotic. In “Taxi Driver,” De Niro’s Travis Bickle is a loner who can’t connect, but he connects with the audience in every frame.

Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro famously teamed up to deliver the 1976 classic Taxi Driver. But before De Niro, Scorsese went to another actor for the iconic role of Travis Bickle.

Taxi Driver is one of the many highly respected projects that De Niro starred in. The Scorsese film famously saw De Niro play a lonely taxi driver who turns to vigilantism after growing disgust with his city. Scorsese ended up being in the project thanks to the recommendation of the movie’s screenwriter Paul Schrader. The director wasn’t yet the trusted and experienced veteran he is today, which is why assigning him to film Taxi Driver took a little convincing.

Acclaimed actor Robert De Niro and renowned director Martin Scorsese have worked together for decades, beginning with the classic mob movie, "Mean Streets." Theirs is an artistic match made in heaven, but it almost never came to be. De Niro very nearly turned down his supporting role in "Mean Streets" back at the beginning of his career. Believe it or not, it was lead actor Harvey Keitel who convinced De Niro to stay on the project. Without Keitel, De Niro and Scorsese may never have worked together at all.
Keitel was actually in Scorsese's student film "Who's That Knocking at My Door." Outside of this first role, Keitel didn't have a lot of experience as an actor, but he was the first person that Scorsese cast when he landed his first commercial. "Perhaps I got the part of Charlie because Marty sensed that I came from a similar background," Keitel speculated,...

Exclusive: Amazon Studios has acquired Gator and the Egg, an undercover buddy cop movie that becomes another streamer film made possible by the Covid pandemic. Amazon has set Tricia Brock to direct the script by BenDavid Grabinski. Steven Soderbergh, Stacey Sher, Michael Shamberg and John Henson are producing. This one is being fast-tracked to shoot late summer, sources said.
The film is a buddy movie, a Lethal Weapon-esque pairing for the modern era with a romantic tension at the center. The project originated at USA Network as a pilot that was location scouting when the pandemic hit and USA shut down its scripted projects. After it shook loose, Grabinski refashioned it as a feature film and Amazon saw it as a chance to add a modestly budgeted potential franchise to its slate.

When “Wipeout” creator Matt Kunitz began planning the show’s revival for TBS, he knew one element had to return: Those iconic, large red balls. Everything else could be updated — and has been, from new hosts John Cena and Nicole Byer to a revised game play that now features teams of two.
“Our marching orders were to make it bigger, bolder, edgier,” Kunitz says of the show, which returns April 1. “Bigger and bolder, that’s easy. That’s the design of the course, which had to be more competitive and more athletic. And edgier, that really is about our hosts.”
But bigger and bolder in the time of Covid-19 meant a major undertaking for the new “Wipeout.” Another safety issue the show faced in its return was the death of a 38-year-old contestant on set last year.
Nonetheless, the escapist nature of “Wipeout” seemed ripe for return in these uncertain times.

What’s the magic formula that has made “Sesame Street” such an enduring hit? Midway through Marilyn Agrelo’s “Street Gang,” star Roscoe Orman offers a succinct answer: “serious intent and joy.” Initially conceived of as a then-revolutionary combination of children’s entertainment and educational instruction — literally inventing the idea of educational TV — “Sesame Street” has only maintained and expanded its lofty ambitions over the course of more than five decades. That success, Agrelo’s film sagely argues, was no accident, but instead the product of careful, considerate, and forward-thinking planning. It may be magic, but boy, does it take work.
While Agrelo’s documentary, based on Michael Davis’ similarly exhaustive nonfiction book of the same name, does occasionally nod to the price of that work, the film mostly tracks the story of what happens when a good idea is undertaken by good people. Many of those good people might...

The big balls are back. TBS has given a 20-episode order to a reboot of “Wipeout,” the obstacle course reality competition that originally aired on ABC between 2008 and 2014.
Given the current worldwide production shutdown, it’s unclear when the new “Wipeout” might eventually make it to air. But when it does, TBS is promising an even more bruising obstacle course.
“The re-imagined series will feature new format twists and elements that will push contestants’ athleticism and willpower to even greater extremes, all while delivering some pretty epic fails,” according to a TBS press release. “Each game has been designed into three rounds and now features a jaw-dropping, three-stage, obstacle course consisting of multiple strategy and decision points designed to further challenge, and wear out, the stamina of the competitors.”
And yes, the signature “Wipeout” massive red balls will return to trigger plenty of contestant wipeouts.
