In the new Hulu comedy-drama “Quiz Lady,” the shy Anne (Awkwafina) has found solace since childhood from her irresponsible mother, Mia father and her boring job watching a “Jeopardy”-esque game show every weeknight. And she even envisions the host (Will Ferrell) as a father figure. Though game show fans don’t usually have such high drama in their lives, most of the contestants on “Jeopardy!” and “Wheel of Fortune” are literally lifelong aficionados. But not every quiz or game show is a “Jeopardy!” “Wheel of Fortune” or even a “Family Feud.”
There have been a lot of quiz and game show series that were offbeat, short-lived or downright hideous, like CBS’ “You’re in the Picture,” which premiered Jan. 20, 1961, the same night as President John F. Kennedy’s inauguration. The show was hosted by none other than Jackie Gleason, who was one of the biggest stars on the Tiffany...

Todd Grinnell had big shoes — or in this case, a big tool belt — to fill, taking on the role of Schneider on Netflix’s reimagining of Norman Lear’s long-running sitcom “One Day at a Time.” This role was made iconic by the late Pat Harrington Jr., who won the show’s only acting Emmy during its original nine-year run (Best Comedy Supporting Actor in 1984). A strong presence in the update’s first two seasons, Grinnell really came into his own during the current third season, proving himself to be a worthy successor to his Emmy-winning predecessor. As Ryan Schwartz (TVLine) writes, “In Season 2, Justina Machado was the undisputed Mvp. In Season 3, that honor goes to Grinnell.”
Grinnell’s Schneider is an entirely different character from Harrington’s blue-collar, wisecracking handyman. The new Schneider is a Canadian expat, hipster, trust-fund baby with a fondness for snow globes and goat yoga.

One Day at a Time‘s Season 3 finale features a major milestone for Penelope — but not before she is visited by the ghosts of boyfriends past.
At Victor and Nicole’s wedding, Penelope has visions of how her life could have turned out. In each vision, she is joined by the spirit of her father Berto (recurring guest star Tony Plana). First, she sees herself up at the altar, set to remarry Victor. Then at the reception, she has a second vision where she has just married Mateo, but there’s still no spark between them.

Todd Grinnell was both “excited and terrified” to play Schneider in the Netflix re-imagining of “One Day at a Time.” The original sitcom ran from 1975 to 1984 on CBS, and Schneider is the only main character who was carried over to the new version. Those are some big shoes to fill: Pat Harrington Jr. won an Emmy for Best Comedy Supporting Actor in 1984 for his performance in the original. But Grinnell plays a very different Schneider, so it was “a real privilege and an honor, not to try and fill Pat’s shoes but put on a different pair of shoes and walk the same path.” Watch our exclusive video interview with Grinnell above.
The 21st century Schneider is “a hipster from Echo Park” and “the perfect foil to this working class Latinx family.” He comes from a wealthy, dysfunctional family in Canada, and now he’s the landlord to the...

One Day at a Time‘s Season 2 finale was especially emotional, as the Alvarez family paid tribute to their beloved matriarch.

Surely no one expected that Rita Moreno’s Lydia would die, but that didn’t make seeing her in a hospital bed any less painful. The character suffered an off-screen stroke at the close of Episode 12 and, after an invasive surgery to stop the hemorrhaging, was placed in a medically induced coma.

Yesterday morning I received an e-mail from my pal/ComicMix partner/Secret Santa Glenn Hauman with a link to a three-month old piece in The Atlantic and the comment “You simply must write this up!”
Must? Glenn never says must. He knows I’ll twist and turn any demand challenge into the pretzel from hell – you know, it’s a living – so he usually makes polite suggestions.
I was thinking about writing in detail about exactly how to fix the comic book industry and how easy it is and how it won’t take any additional money to pull it off, but evidently Glenn thinks this is more important. So be it.
I believe the brilliant political satire The President’s Analyst (James Coburn, Godfrey Cambridge, and Wasteland contributor Severn Darden) to be even more relevant today than it was when it was released in 1967. I don’t want to...

I was thinking about The Carrie Diaries, and a bizarre truth hit me: It's a great idea for a show! Though Sex and the City ran six seasons, inspecting Carrie Bradshaw's teenage history through whatever overly glamorized or cutesy lens is intriguing. All these years after the HBO hit left the air, Carrie is a beloved and somehow relevant protagonist that everyone has an opinion about. I salute The Carrie Diaries for exploring her deep past. Moreover, I hope it inspires TV networks to mine the potentially fertile backstories of these five other classic TV shows, which range from the broadly comic to the grimly serious.

You can add James Callis to the list of sci-fi studs to get a role on Arrow. TV Guide reports that he'll play an international jewel thief known as The Dodger.
Yep, there's a Tumblr blog that's rewatching Gossip Girl to see if it still makes sense with the revelation of Gossip Girl's identity. So far, the pilot makes little sense in light of the revelation (and makes one major storyline pretty creepy). That's okay, I just rewatched the Scandal pilot and it feels like a lot of the characters weren't developed until later.
NBC has ordered a game show that tries to capture the atmosphere of a "game night" cocktail party. Deadline says that Hollywood Game Night will take inspiration by the game nights producer Sean Hayes hosts at his home. The show will...

Another fan-favorite "Lost" alum is heading to "Once Upon A Time." Jorge Garcia, who played Hurley on the cult ABC drama, will join "Once" for one episode, a rep for ABC has confirmed to HuffPost TV.
Details on Garcia's role are being kept under wraps, but we do know that the "Alcatraz" star will be playing a character known as "The Giant." Since the show's creators confirmed that the story of Jack and the Beanstalk would be explored in Season 2 at Comic-Con, it's logical to assume that Garcia's character will somehow relate to Jack (a.k.a. "the giant killer" -- uh oh). Fingers crossed that we'll hear a "fee-fi-fo-fum."
Garcia's "Lost" co-star, Emilie de Ravin, was recently promoted to a series regular for the fantasy show's second season.

Smallville alum Laura Vandervoort has landed a Haven-ly gig, booking a double-episode arc on the Syfy series.
In the 12th and 13th episodes of Season 3 (premiering Friday, Sept. 21 at 10/9c), Vandervoort will play a highly intelligent and (duh) beautiful woman who has returned to Haven for the latest cycle of Trouble. Alas, her visit isn’t a peaceful one; rather, she is driven to the brink of madness by the loss of a loved one.
In addition to her run as Smallville‘s Kara/Supergirl, Vandervoort’s previous TV credits include ABC’s V reboot and a guest gig on White Collar this summer.

A couple of notes. First the above picture doesn’t really show it, but the animal park at Hershey, like the amusement park, is in the center of the city. That monstrous elk is 20 feet from the back decks of some houses. I can just imagine dinner parties – "What's that smell?" Oh, just the elk in the back yard.

June 8th, 1984 was a great day for movie nerds, particularly those with an affection for special effects, scares and belly laughs. Not only did they get "Ghostbusters" in theaters that day (as we've already looked at, but they also got "Gremlins," the subversive PG-rated horror-comedy from the A-list trio of writer Chris Columbus, director Joe Dante and producer Steven Spielberg.
The film, which involves young Billy (Zach Galligan), who fails to obey the strict rules regarding looking after his new pet (all together now: don't get them in bright daylight, don't get them wet, and whatever you do, don't feed them after midnight) and ends up unleashing a plague of monsters on his suburban town. It was the first film released under Spielberg's Amblin logo, and embodies much of what that company came to represent, although "Gremlins" was also violent enough that it helped give birth to the PG-13 rating.
