An episode of Canadian drama “Nurses” that aired on NBC earlier this month has been pulled from the broadcaster’s digital platforms following backlash over the installment’s storyline about an Orthodox Jewish patient refusing a bone graft from a potentially “Arab” or female donor, a spokesperson for the network tells TheWrap.
“The writers of this scene check all the boxes of ignorance and pernicious negative stereotypes, right down to the name of the patient, Israel – pious and all,” the Simon Wiesenthal Center said in a statement earlier Wednesday. “In one scene, NBC has insulted and demonized religious Jews and Judaism. Overreaction? Orthodox Jews are targeted for violent hate crimes — in the city of New York, Jews are number one target of hate crimes in U.S.. This is no slip of the tongue. It was a vile, cheap attack masquerading as TV drama. What’s NBC going to do about it?...

NBC is importing the Canadian medical drama “Nurses” to air on the network beginning next month.
The 10-episode series, set in Toronto, follows five young nurses working on the frontlines of a busy downtown hospital, dedicating their lives to helping others while struggling to help themselves. It stars Tiera Skovbye (“Riverdale”), Natasha Calis (“The Posession”), Jordan Johnson-Hinds (“Blindspot”), Sandy Sidhu (“Home Before Dark”) and Donald MacLean Jr. (“Workin’ Moms”).
The network will air preview episodes on Monday, Dec. 7 and Monday, Dec. 14 before returning with a proper premiere on Tuesday, Jan. 5.
The move to import “Nurses,” which first aired on Canada’s Global TV, looks to build on the success NBC saw with its other recent import, “Transplant,” earlier this fall. “Transplant” premiered on the network back in September and has averaged 5.6 million viewers per episode, with a particularly strong showing in delayed viewing.

The Canadian import boom continues after NBC on Tuesday said it has picked up the medical drama Nurses.
The network acquired U.S. rights to the hospital drama from eOne and Icf Films. It will add the show, which features Riverdale’s Tiera Skovbye, to its primetime lineup in December.
It marks the latest Canadian show to be picked up by a U.S. network following deals for fellow medical drama Transplant, also with NBC, and procedural Coroner, which was picked up by the CW, as networks continue to look for already produced English-language content to deal with the fallout that Covid-19 has had on production schedules.
Nurses, originally commissioned by Canada’s Global TV, was one of a number of Canadian shows highlighted by Deadline back in May that was expected to be picked up by a U.S. network.

CBC has renewed Burden of Truth for a fourth season, with production to begin in Winnipeg, Manitoba, later this summer. Diggstown has been renewed for a third season with shooting set to begin in Halifax, Nova Scotia, in early 2021.

Just ahead of its fall season rollout, which launches tonight, the CW is already looking ahead, announcing its 2019 summer programming lineup. It features six original series — one new and five returning — including three acquired dramas, as the CW has renewed all of its summer 2018 series. It is one of the CW’s biggest slates of original shows specifically designated for the off-season. The network has acquired British action drama Bulletproof from Sky Vision and ordered second seasons of legal drama Burden of Truth, starring Kristin Kreuk, and fantasy-adventure series The Outpost. The CW has also ordered new seasons of the hit magic series Penn & Teller: Fool Us and Masters Of Illusion, and the classic improv comedy Whose Line Is It Anyway? all set for premiere in summer 2019. Premiere dates and times will be announced later.
Bulletproof, from Vertigo Films and Company Pictures, follows two undercover cops, Bishop and Pike as they chase down hardened criminals in London’s East End. Pike is an aspirational family man, the son of a decorated police officer who is determined to follow in his father’s footsteps, but not be in his shadow. Meanwhile, Bishop grew up in care homes and on the streets, and never knew his father. Despite these differences Bishop and Pike are bonded by the same moral code and work brilliantly well together even when the chemistry between them looks set to explode.
Allan Niblo Michele Buck Judy Counihan Nick Love Noel Clarke, and Ashley Walters executive produce. The series was co-funded by Sky’s distribution arm, Sky Vision, who control international rights.
Burden Of Truth, starring Kristin Kreuk, is a serialized investigative drama about life-altering legal cases. IFC Films and Entertainment One produces in association with Eagle Vision Inc. with executive producers Ilana Frank, Adam Pettle, Jocelyn Hamilton, Linda Pope and Kristin Kreuk.
Created by Kynan Griffin and Jason Faller, The Outpost, a fantasy-adventure series from Electric Entertainment and Arrowstorm Entertainment, executive producers Dean Devlin and Jonathan Glassner, follows Talon (Jessica Green), the lone survivor of a race called the “Blackbloods.” In a lawless fortress on the edge of the civilized world, Talon must learn to master her supernatural powers, and ally with a Queen who has been in hiding to defend the world against a fanatical religious dictator. Jake Stormoen, Imogen Waterhouse and Anand Desai-Barochia alsp star.
The Outpost also is executive produced by Electric Entertainment’s team of Marc Roskin and Rachel Olschan-Wilson and by Arrowstorm Entertainment’s team of Jason Faller and Kynan Griffin, the team behind the cult favorite Mythica films. Jennifer Griffin of Arrowstorm Entertainment is also producing.
Penn & Teller: Fool Us is a one-hour competition series celebrating magic and featuring the legendary duo Penn & Teller. Hosted by actress Alyson Hannigan (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), the series is created and executive produced by Penn Jillette, Teller, Peter Adam Golden and Andrew Golder in association with 1/17 Productions and September Films (part of Dcd Media).
Hosted by actor Dean Cain (Supergirl), Masters of Illusion features amazing magic performed by cutting-edge illusionists and escape artists, and performers in each episode displaying skills ranging from perplexing interactive mind magic to hilarious comedy routines. The series hails from Associated Television International with executive producers David McKenzie, Gay Blackstone, David Martin and Al Schwartz, along with co-executive producer Jim Romanovich.
Whose Line Is It Anyway?, based on the hit UK format and hosted by comedian Aisha Tyler, features cast members Ryan Stiles, Wayne Brady and Colin Mochrie. Along with a special guest comedian in each episode, the cast members put their comedic skills to the test through a series of spontaneous improv games. Series creators Dan Patterson and Mark Leveson executive produce with Jimmy Mulville, Ryan Stiles, Wayne Brady and Colin Mochrie. Whose Line Is It Anyway? hails from Angst Productions and Hat Trick Productions.

It's the end of the road for ABC's summer staple Rookie Blue. The Canadian cop drama Rookie Blue's recent sixth season finale will serve as a series finale. Producers Entertainment One and U.S. distributor ABC have opted to cancel the series after six seasons and 74 episodes. Canadian broadcaster Shaw Media also confirmed the cancelation, indicating the homegrown cop drama had reached a "natural conclusion," especially with Andy (Missy Peregrym) and Sam (Ben Bass) getting married in the season six finale. That view was shared by Rookie Blue creator Ilana Frank on Friday. "On behalf of the whole Rookie

Gregory Smith didn't want to take the easy way out with his second "Rookie Blue" directing assignment ... and he sure didn't.
The actor who plays Officer Dov Epstein on the Canadian-made ABC police drama is in the thick of the bountiful action -- on both sides of the camera -- as he calls the shots on the first half of the show's Season 4 finale Thursday (Sept. 5). The story is sparked by an unknown gunman who targets Andy and Chloe (Missy Peregrym, Priscilla Faia), then other cops of 15 Division.
From the moment he first heard the plot, Smith knew he wanted to tackle the episode fully. Saving Hope, produced and distributed by Entertainment One, stars Michael Shanks (Stargate Sg-1) as Dr. Harris, chief surgeon who lies in a coma and wanders the wards in spirit form, Erica Durance (Smallville) as his fiancee and fellow surgeon, and Daniel Gillies (The Vampire Diaries) is a hot new surgeon.
