The 1950s were a time of great experimentation for comic book publishers. Retail outlets were disappearing and post-war military scale-backs undermined Px sales. Superman was kept alive by its massive television exposure, but virtually all other superhero comics were either gone or in deep trouble.
Necessity being the mother of invention, comics publishers back then had no choice but to try new ideas and concepts. Western comics were hit-or-miss; those that featured top-line movie stars or characters were doing okay, the others were sort of meh. Romance comics, teevee tie-ins and some funny animal books were selling. The horror and crime comics that had been keeping publishers such as EC, Harvey and Gleason in the money were being condemned by the media, camera-hungry politicians and sanctimonious self-appointed “experts.”
So until DC and Marvel finally succeeded in rejuvenating the superhero genre, experimentation was the watchword of that decade. And that brings...

TNT has renewed “The Librarians,” “Major Crimes,” and “Murder in the First,” TheWrap has learned. In addition, freshman series “Agent X” and “Public Morals” were canceled, along with sophomore series “Legends.” “Agent X” featured Sharon Stone playing the Vice President, while “Public Morals” was created by and starred Eddie Burns. “Legends,” which starred Sean Bean, followed a deep cover operative who can transform himself into other people for each new assignment. Kino Classics refurbishes public domain title The Death Kiss, a 1932 release made purely to capitalize off the success of Tod Browning’s 1931 Dracula by casting three of the main leads from that film. The title retains little interest except for Lugosi completists, who isn’t given much to do this time around as a rather miffed film studio manager. However, film historians may appreciate the film for its locale, set almost entirely within the back lot of what was termed a Poverty Row studio, shackled by the meager prospects of the Great Depression.
As director Tom Avery (Edward Van Sloan) films his final sequence on his new film The Death Kiss at the sound stage of Tonart Studios in Los Angeles, his lead actor Myles Brent (Edmund Burns) is shot with a real bullet. All the prop guns on set are checked. Investigating Detective Lt. Sheehan (John Wray) and Sergeant...

On an early morning over breakfast at a oceanside diner in Los Angeles, Milo Ventimiglia of TNT's L.A.-gangster drama "Mob City" is considering what it means to be wearing a suit-and-tie at work.
"I feel like I finally made it," he tells Zap2it. "It's was nice to have two suit-and-tie roles."
In the feature film "Grace of Monaco," set in the early 1960s (and set for release on March 14), Nicole Kidman plays actress Grace Kelly, who became Princess Grace after marrying Prince Ranier III of Monaco. Ventimiglia plays her press agent, Rupert Allan.
"So," Ventimiglia says, "the '60s, then you jump back into the '40s for 'Mob City.' It's hard to beat that."
In the six-episode "Mob City," from creator Frank Darabont ("The Walking Dead"), which concludes tonight on TNT, Ventimiglia plays lawyer Ned Stax, an outwardly respectable lawyer who works as a fixer...

Ed Burns is fast becoming TNT‘s Mvp. The actor, who is a regular on Mob City, the network’s upcoming noir drama series set in 1940s Los Angeles, is behind another TNT period crime drama project, which has received a pilot order. The network has greenlighted Public Morals, written, to be directed by and starring Burns. Amblin TV and TNT Original Prods are producing, with Steven Spielberg and Burns executive producing alongside Darryl Frank, Justin Falvey and Aaron Lubin. The project is set in 1967 in New York City’s Public Morals Division, where cops walk the line between morality and criminality as the temptations that comes from dealing with all kinds of vice can get the better of them. It centers on cop Terry Muldoon (Burns), who knows the line between the good guys and bad guys is thin, and he is determined to raise his sons to be...

Long before Connie Britton was perfecting her "y'alls" as Tami Taylor on "Friday Night Lights" she played Ed Burns' put-upon sister-in-law in "The Brothers McMullen." The 1995 indie sensation was Britton's screen debut, and while she has become famous for her television roles on "Friday Night Lights," "American Horror Story" and "Nashville," Britton's movie career has continued to be intertwined with her original director and co-star. In addition to "Brothers McMullen," Britton has also starred for Burns in "No Looking Back," "Looking for Kitty" and his new feature, "The Fitzgerald Family Christmas," where she plays his onscreen love interest.
Britton took time out of her busy "Nashville" shooting schedule to talk with HuffPost Entertainment about her debut in "Brothers McMullen," why it can be difficult to find fulfilling movie roles, and the latest on that "Friday Night Lights" movie.

The National Organization for Women should send Angelina Jolie a nice cheese basket (or vice versa).
The world's most famous actress-humanitarian might not have single-handedly erased gender inequality in the movie industry, but she sure has struck a major blow for actresses. How else to explain her $20 million payout for Sony's next big summer release, "Salt," an action project that originally was written to star a man -- no less than Tom Cruise?
"It's definitely unusual that a female has become an action star," "Salt" producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura says. "But it's a funny thing. She's not a female action star; she's an action star. She's really the first female to transcend gender. I don't think it's occurred before."
To di Bonaventura's point, a star must be in some rarefied atmosphere when a one-hander lead role in a huge studio action tentpole is rewritten from male to female. It's akin...
