In 1994, Disney chairman Jeffrey Katzenberg resigned from the company and teamed up with Steven Spielberg and music executive David Geffen to form DreamWorks Skg, which later was rechristened DreamWorks Animation. Its first feature film, released four years later, was “Antz,” a brash, adult-oriented CGI production about a worker ant struggling to stick out in the communal colony he slaves away in. The film was successful — it was the first non-Disney animated movie to gross $100 million worldwide — but it was also overshadowed by comparisons to “A Bug’s Life,” Pixar’s film released that year which also focused on a misfit ant trying to save his ant colony.
That beginning encapsulates the perception of DreamWorks Animation in a nutshell — as the decidedly less ambitious, less artful cousin to Pixar. And it’s hard to say that reputation is totally unearned. DreamWorks is responsible for many lazily constructed, irritating animated movies, from “Shark Tale...

In 2024, film adaptations of popular literature continue to captivate audiences. One of the year’s most intriguing entries is 'The Wild Robot,' a film based on Peter Brown’s 2016 novel of the same name. Directed by Chris Sanders, the film reimagines the story of Roz, a robot stranded on an island, and her journey toward understanding the natural world. It is a family-friendly adventure filled with heart, warmth, and stunning animation, but it also raises important questions about humanity’s relationship with technology and nature. In a year that has provided its fair share of disappointments at the box office, it's always nice when we get to talk about something good that happened -- if not something downright great, in this particular case. Indeed, DreamWorks and Universal's "The Wild Robot" debuted in theaters this past weekend, taking in $35 million at the domestic box office. That blew past industry expectations, in no small part thanks to the stellar reviews and word of mouth. It also set a new high-bar for non-franchise animation in the pandemic era.
That $35 million figure represents the very top end of the most optimistic projections heading into the weekend. "The Wild Robot" also pulled in $18 million overseas for a $53 million global start. To say that it is difficult to open a non-franchise animated film in the pandemic era would be an understatement.

It’s harder these days for animated films to find an audience without a recognizable brand. But with both critic and moviegoer acclaim on its side, Universal/DreamWorks’ “The Wild Robot” has the tools it needs to turn a modest $35 million domestic opening weekend into a long theatrical run that could last through the end of the year.
“Robot” will have to defy a historic trend of tough roads to success for animated science fiction. One critical strategy will be to leverage positive reviews and word of mouth to appeal to families and women over 35 at a time when the box office offers those audiences fewer options.
“Robot” took in $53 million globally in its opening weekend, a solid performance against a reported $78 million budget.
But the $35 million domestic box office was not close to the $43.7 million opening (unadjusted for inflation) that the franchise-spawning “How to Train Your Dragon” earned in...

It seems like animated movies are taking off this year, and Universal’s joint project with DreamWorks, The Wild Robot, is showing signs that it will be the next big thing at the box office. The early projections were around $24-30 million but the film is already surpassing itself as evident in its domestic opening.

Fans are truly shocked at its rapid momentum as there hasn’t been much marketing done by the studios. Regardless, the positive early reviews are doing a great job of spreading the word across the globe.

"The Wild Robot," the heartstring-tugging new animated film from "How to Train Your Dragon" co-director Christopher Sanders, earned a rare 10 out of 10 review from /Film when it screened at Fantastic Fest earlier this month. The story follows a robot called Rozzum unit 7134, aka "Roz," who emerges from her crate to find that she's been shipwrecked on an island with lots of animals, but no humans. After an orphaned gosling imprints on her, Roz has to figure out how to be a mother -- something that wasn't exactly included in her programming.
/Film's Ryan Scott wasn't alone in giving this film a rave review. "The Wild Robot" has a near-perfect score of 98% on Rotten Tomatoes as of this writing, which might be the reason it's racing ahead of expectations at the box office. Per The Wrap, Universal was projecting a $20 million-plus debut, and third-party estimates were in the $24-30 million range.

DreamWorks Animation and Universal’s family film The Wild Robot is charming reviewers and audiences alike, boasting both a stellar 98 percent Rotten Tomatoes critics score and a 98 percent audience score, not to mention an A CinemaScore from moviegoers. Thanks to great word of mouth, Wild Robot came in No. 1 with an estimated $35 million.

Francis Ford Coppola — in one of the low points of his long and illustrious career — is watching his new movie Megalopolis get almost utterly rejected by moviegoers (it was likewise maligned by many critics). The film received a disastrous D+ CinemaScore from audiences and only cleared an estimated $4 million in its domestic debut (many rivals predict final numbers will be lower). Heading into the weekend, tracking and Lionsgate expected it to do at least $5 million to $7 million.

DreamWorks Animaton and Universal’s The Wild Robot started off its North American box office run with $1.95 million in Thursday previews, a solid start for a family animated film. The movie is based on Peter Brown’s beloved bestseller about a robot nicknamed Roz who forms an unexpected bond with an orphaned gosling and other creatures after being shipwrecked on a lonely island.
The critically acclaimed CGI-animated film is tracking to open in the $24 million range domestically, although more bullish forecasters believe it could easily fly past $30 million. But it’s understandable why the filmmakers are trying to temper expectations in suggesting $20 million-plus after last weekend’s Transformers One, another animated PG-rated pic, came in $5 million behind tracking with a $24.6 million domestic launch.

While DreamWorks animation brought us the direct-to-streaming cinematic marvel Orion and the Dark, their big theatrical film for this year is The Wild Robot, directed by former Disney director Chris Sanders. After helping to bring to life other franchises like Lilo & Stitch, How To Train Your Dragon, and The Croods, Sanders once again tugs at the heartstrings of audience members with a film adaptation of the 2016 children’s book by Peter Brown.
Here is ‘The Wild Robot’ Trailer.
When the first trailer was revealed, many thought that it would be the studio’s attempt at Wall-e or The Iron Giant. However, there is more of a Studio Ghibli vibe from the overall narrative, and not just because the main character looks like one of the robots from Castle in the Sky.
So, is “The Wild Robot” one of DreamWorks’ emotional gut-punching movies? Or is it more of the eye candy...

“The Wild Robot” director Chris Sanders was feeling a little lost himself.
In 2020, he ventured into live-action filmmaking with “The Call of the Wild,” an ambitious, imperfect adaptation of Jack London’s 1903 novel. Sanders got to work with Janusz Kaminski, Steven Spielberg’s regular cinematographer, and it allowed him to direct Harrison Ford as a grizzled frontiersman. But the film opened a few weeks before the pandemic shut down movie theaters.
For the first time in his career, Sanders had delivered a disappointment.
Then DreamWorks Animation, the studio where the filmmaker had made “How to Train Your Dragon” and “The Croods,” wooed him back. He looked at the projects the studio had in development or owned the rights to and quickly zeroed in on “The Wild Robot,” a book by American author and illustrator Peter Brown about a high-tech machine that washes up on an island inhabited by animals.

Summer may be over, but 2024 isn’t finished with feature animation by a long shot. The “mouse house” has a big one lined up for Thanksgiving weekend in fact. Plus its sister company, Pixar, had a most surprising blockbuster a couple of months ago with Inside Out 2. Now, one of the other big cartoon studios, Dreamworks, is releasing a real rarity: an original animated feature. Yes, it’s based on a beloved children’s book series, but it’s not been brought to “big screen life” before, as with this year’s new installments of franchise faves like Despicable Me, the Transformers, and Garfield. And its subject matter is also unique as it combines cute and cuddly critters with a futuristic mechanical being. But there are no humans to get it, hence its interaction with wildlife inspires its moniker, The Wild Robot.

Sometimes a movie debuts at a film festival and the acclaim seems practically universal. Peter Brown’s much-loved novel gets turned into a dazzling big-screen film for all ages that’s one of the year’s most entertaining animated offerings
At first glance, The Wild Robot, a new movie from Dreamworks Animation (and one of the studio’s last in-house productions), seems to target the voguish cultural anxiety over sentient, talking computers – technology designed, to borrow the dubious promises of companies like OpenAI, to seem more and more like a human. The titular robot here is Rozzum Unit 7134, assumedly a Silicon Valley invention, if Silicon Valley tried to update the Jetsons’ household assistant, whose delivery is foiled by a typhoon. Instead, she washes ashore on a remote Pacific north-west-esque isle. The robot, convincingly voiced by Lupita Nyong’o, has the flat affect of Amazon’s Alexa and the purely task-oriented mindset of programming, plus enough of a hint of confused yearning to immediately root for her.

The new arrivals on the box office marquee this weekend make for an unusual recipe, if not a spicy one.
The safest and most traditional ingredient is DreamWorks Animaton and Universal’s family film The Wild Robot, based on Peter Brown’s beloved best-seller about a robot nicknamed Roz who forms an unexpected bond with an orphaned gosling and other creatures after being shipwrecked on a lonely island.
The critically acclaimed CGI-animated film is tracking to open in the $24 million range domestically, although more bullish forecasters believe it could easily fly past $30 million. Every so often, we encounter an animated film that pulls at the heartstrings and immerses the audience in animation that reminds us of the magic of movies. That film is The Wild Robot, a big, beautiful, animated family film that may be passed down from generation to generation as an enduring classic.
The Wild Robot is a gorgeous film with nearly universal themes regarding becoming a parent. The film addresses themes of sacrifice, protection, identity, transformation, and a little thing called unconditional love that will fill your heart and maybe even bring a tear to your eyes.
At least, it did for me.

Programmed to assist in any task within her ability, Roz searches for a directive amidst the lush forest, tributaries, and craggy mountainsides. While exploring, Roz accidentally crushes a nest of gosling eggs, with only the runt of the gaggle surviving the unintentional destruction. Unsure of what to do, Roz assumes a motherly role and acts as the gosling’s caregiver until he can eat, swim, and fly alone. Considered outcasts on the island, Roz and the gosling struggle to win the approval of the local wildlife but eventually become something much greater than anyone expected.

Warner Bros.’ “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” is set to pull off an upset at the box office by snagging its third No. 1 weekend from an underperforming “Transformers One.”
The Tim Burton sequel is earning an estimated $26 million in its third weekend to bring its domestic total to $226 million, having passed the domestic run of fellow 2024 Warner release “Godzilla x Kong” back on Thursday.
“Transformers One,” meanwhile, is opening to a lower-than-projected $25 million from 3,978 theaters despite strong reviews from critics and audiences. The $75 million animated film from Paramount and Hasbro was projected for a $30 million start, with some independent projections having it matching the $33.7 million opening of Paramount’s summer family film “If.”
“If” legged out to a respectable $111 million domestic theatrical run, and Paramount will be hoping for similar legs for “Transformers One” given its excellent reception, including an A on CinemaScore, 5/5 on PostTrak, and Rotten Tomatoes scores of 89% critics and 98% audience.

Every so often a movie comes along that manages to defy already high expectations. Ever since critics first started getting a glimpse of DreamWorks' "The Wild Robot," it has generated that effusive level of enthusiasm that seems destined to disappoint the average viewer. It happens often and it's just the nature of the hype machine around big movies. Well, I am here to say with the utmost confidence that "The Wild Robot" is one of the exceptionally rare movies that not only lives up to the sky-high bar set by the hype machine -- it exceeds those expectations.
"The Wild Robot" follows a robot named Rozzum unit 7134, aka "Roz." She is shipwrecked on an island that's uninhabited by humans, but rich with animal life. While Roz is equipped to handle just about everything humanity can throw at her, she's not at all prepared for everything the animal kingdom has in store.

Lupita Nyong’o had years to perfect her voice as Roz in “The Wild Robot” and she used every bit of it.
The animated film, which hit the Toronto International Film Festival this past weekend, is an adaptation of the Peter Brown book and tells the story of a shipwrecked robot on an uninhabited island who bonds with the animals and begins caring for an orphaned baby goose.
Sitting down at TheWrap’s 2024 TIFF Studio sponsored by Moët & Chandon and Boss Design, Nyong’o explained how she worked with director Chris Sanders on the process of voicing Roz.
“I came in with some ideas and I shared them with him … the good thing about working on an animation is that it takes years, so you have a lot of time to try things out and then throw out what doesn’t work and try something else,” she said. “But what...

As early as the dawn of the 1980s, director Chris Sanders has been fixated on a little creature that lived in a forest. “It was a bit of a monster with no real explanation as to where it came from. It was all about how he found a way to belong,” he told critic Bilge Ebiri for Vulture’s oral history of Sanders’s breakout hit Lilo & Stitch. That longing for connection in a hostile environment has been threaded throughout his work since.

On a lush green island far from anywhere else, a lone robot comes ashore. Rozzum 7134, nicknamed Roz and voiced charmingly by Lupita Nyong’o, finds herself stranded with no humans in sight. Her programming tells her to serve, but none ask for assistance. Yet just beyond the beach awaits a whole world for Roz to explore. Animals of every kind call this remote refuge home, from rustling raccoons and lumbering bears to looping geese and slinking foxes. Though not always welcoming at first.
Adapted from Peter Brown’s bestselling book by the talented Chris Sanders, “The Wild Robot” brings this island realm to vivid life through its animated paintings. Spawned from the New York Times No. 1 bestseller by Peter Brown that managed to speak to multiple generations, not just kids, DreamWorks Animation’s The Wild Robot proves to be a real gem in the genre that likely will become a classic, and no doubt bring sequels just as Brown’s book is now a literary series. With beautiful animation and a smart script that has equal humor, action, heart and lessons to be learned for any age, this movie transcends the boundaries of just animation and will enchant audiences. If Spielberg’s E.T. had been an animated film instead, it might resemble what writer-director Chris Sanders has created here. However, Wild Robot weaves its own magic and for that we can all cry tears of joy.

In the opening scenes of The Wild Robot, a robot washes onto the shore of a remote island, bearing marks and labels of its human manufacturers. Rozzum unit 7134, voiced by Lupita Nyong’o in an inspired performance, is a machine built to serve. One of her first phrases after being activated by a colony of beavers is an expression of this fealty: She always completes her task, just ask. Naturally, the animals in this secluded locale fear this towering metal assemblage. When presented with her eager gestures of assistance, they scramble.
Premiering at the Toronto Film Festival, The Wild Robot is the story of how Rozzum 7134 becomes Roz and finds her place and purpose within an obscure island’s vibrant ecosystem. Chris Sanders (Lilo & Stitch, How to Train Your Dragon) adapted this poignant DreamWorks feature from Peter Brown’s affecting trilogy of the same name. When it hits theaters on September...

A gorgeous computer-generated cartoon with a human heart beating beneath its sleek, state-of-the-art surface, DreamWorks Animation’s “The Wild Robot” arrives at a time when the public seems more concerned than ever about being outsmarted by artificial intelligence. It’s somewhat ironic then that the movie, a lovely chosen-family fable adapted from the first book in Peter Brown’s open-ended series, features no human characters of consequence.
Instead, “The Wild Robot” concerns an overzealous automaton named Rozzum 7134 (or simply “Roz” for short), whose personality comes partly from Lupita Nyong’o and the rest from the artists at Dwa. Together with “How to Train Your Dragon” co-director Chris Sanders, they imbue this bot — basically, two spheres, four limbs and more tools than a Swiss Army knife — with maternal instincts and something that could pass for a soul.

Somewhere on a distant island, a verdant little slice of nature filled to the brim with all of North America’s greatest hits creatures, a snazzy robot has crash-landed. Her name is Rozzum unit 7134, she’s winningly voiced by Lupita Nyong’o, and she’s a real striver. Like all Rozzum units — imagine the love child of The Iron Giant and Wall-e — she’s built to serve, and will “always complete its task, just ask.” Unfortunately, when a technological marvel like Rozzum unit 7134 unexpectedly arrives on an uninhabited island, finding a human master to actually tell them her what to do is a hefty ask.
Such is the starting point of Chris Sanders’ gorgeously rendered — both in style and tone — “The Wild Robot,” which the filmmaker himself adapted from Peter Brown’s bestselling novel of the same name. Crafted in a painterly 2D style, the world of “The Wild Robot” is instantly immersive,...

Lupita Nyong’o, Catherine O’Hara and the cast of “The Wild Robot” have a suggestion for moviegoers wanting to see their new animated film: Bring tissues to the theater.
The movie, a sci-fi survival story about a robot that’s marooned on an uninhabited island, debuts on Sunday night at Toronto Film Festival and may prompt moviegoers to shed a few tears. As the android Rozzum unit 7134, who goes by Roz (voiced by Nyong’o), learns to adapt to the harsh surroundings, she gradually builds relationships with other animals on the island — O’Hara voices a droll mother possum called Pinktail, Kit Connor plays an orphaned gosling named Brightbill, Mark Hamill is grumpy grizzly bear Thorn — and starts to raise Brightbill. But teaching the runt of the litter to eat, swim and fly before migration season is something that proves to be more difficult (and sentimental) than Roz is programmed to handle.

The year 2023 was an embarrassment of riches when it came to animation. Movies like “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” became massive commercial successes and crossed the billion-dollar mark at the box office, while movies like “Nimona” and “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem” hit big with audiences and critics. There were films that boasted wildly different aesthetics and showed the power of the animation medium, like “Blue Giant” and “The First Slam Dunk.” We also saw the return of legendary animator Hayao Miyazaki, who gave us his most personal film to date with “The Boy and the Heron.”

Immediately after John Lennon’s death, Cynthia Lennon reluctantly let her son, Julian, visit Yoko Ono in New York. Julian was still a teenager, and Cynthia didn’t want him to travel alone. Still, she allowed him to do what he felt was necessary. While Julian enjoyed spending time with his younger brother, Sean, Cynthia felt that Ono treated him callously.

“‘[Ono] will do anything to keep you in your place,’ he said. ‘Sean is the only person who matters to her. There’s simply no place for you in her world,’” Cynthia wrote in her book John.

A friend of The Beatles said their fame depressed them
As Beatlemania raged on across the world, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr became accustomed to finding fans camped outside their homes. People followed them wherever they went, and the crush of the crowds became dangerous. As a result, they avoided many public spaces.
“We reached a point where quite often, The Beatles were longing to have privacy,” their friend, Alex Mardas, said in the book All You Need Is Love: The Beatles in Their Own Words by Peter Brown and Steven Gaines.
