Update: Last year, Arrow Video released the first four Hellraiser films in a 4K box set called Hellraiser: Quartet of Torment. That box set is now making its way to North America, with a release date of October 22nd in the US and Canada! For information on what’s contained in the set, check out the write-up on last year’s UK release below. It appears that everything from the UK set will be included in the North American set.
The original article follows:
A couple years ago, screenwriter Peter Atkins – who worked on the scripts for the first three Hellraiser sequels – published his original screenplay for the famously troubled fourth film, Hellraiser: Bloodline (the script is available for purchase at This Link), saying, “Whilst you’ll never get to see a Director’s Cut of Hellraiser: Bloodline, you can read in this book what was supposed to be…” But...

Who among us hasn’t fallen for a bad boy once or twice? Maybe he’s the cute senior trying to cheat off of us in Algebra. Maybe he jumped our car when the battery died outside the mall. Or maybe he’s our fiancé’s hot brother knocking on our door in the middle of a rainstorm just desperate for a towel. Whatever the case, we all know what it’s like to get pulled into an illicit, but ill-advised affair. Sure it seems exciting at first, but it rapidly spirals into the further regions of hell.
Julia Cotton (Clare Higgins) finds herself in a similar situation in Clive Barker’s decadent masterpiece Hellraiser. When she hooks up with her future brother-in-law Frank (Sean Chapman) just days before the wedding, she allows herself to taste the sinful pleasures not available in...

Presented by Lisa Frankenstein, 1989 Week is dialing the clock back to the crossroads year for the genre with a full week of features that dig six feet under into the year. Today, Jenn Adams tears a page from the new horror comedy and thirsts on threats similar to Lisa’s Creature.
Everybody loves a bad boy. There’s something appealing about a guy who disregards the rules and dreamy delinquents have been known to make even wholesome girls grow weak in the knees. Sometimes it’s the air of danger that heightens the appeal, allowing us to look past the most monstrous physiques.
The new horror comedy Lisa Frankenstein delivers a swoon worthy monster with Cole Sprouse’s Creature, a resurrected corpse who’s spent the last two centuries buried in the local Bachelor’s Cemetery. His tears may smell, and his body may be rotting, but the hunky fiend...

Any opportunity to combine those two treats feels like a spooky season miracle.

This time in 4K…
It is time to re-experience the sublime agony of Hellraiser, as Clive Barker’s outrageously gruesome and influential horror masterwork returns to UK cinemas in a brand new 4K restoration – Hell has never looked so good!
In the 1980s, Clive Barker changed the face of horror fiction, throwing out the rules to expose new vistas of terror and beauty – and with Hellraiser, his first feature film as director, he did the same for cinema. The film was a smash hit at the box office, making fifteen times its budget, and went on to garner even more fans on home video. It became a hugely popular horror franchise, securing Pinhead and the Cenobites a place in the Horror Hall of fame.

Freshly announced this morning, Arrow Video is bringing the Hellraiser franchise to 4K Ultra HD with a brand new Hellraiser: Quartet of Torment Limited Edition 4K Uhd set.
The upcoming set features the following Hellraiser movies:
Hellraiser (1987) Hellbound: Hellraiser II (1988) Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth (1992) Hellraiser: Bloodline (1996)
The most exciting aspect of this release? Arrow’s Hellraiser: Quartet of Torment set features the newly uncovered Workprint Version of fourth installment Hellraiser: Bloodline!
This never-before-seen version of the 1996 sequel, directed by Kevin Yagher, “provides a fascinating insight into how it changed during post production.” The initial cut of the movie ran 110 minutes long, but the studio executives at Miramax demanded major changes that resulted in Yagher departing the project. The final cut ultimately ended up running 85 minutes long, and Yagher was so unhappy with the finished product that he took his name off the movie. That’s why Hellraiser: Bloodline is...

For decades it has held an audience under its spell with eerie thrills, gothic narratives, and iconic characters unlike any others seen before or since then.

Director David Bruckner’s Hellraiser reboot just made a big and gooey splash on Hulu. In its messy aftermath, folks are discovering the old burning questions fans have long had about the world of Cenobites and chains: Are these creatures, created by Clive Barker, demons out of the actual biblical Hell, and is their menacing puzzle box (aka the Lament Configuration) a gateway to the whole of damnation, debasement, and diabolical disfiguration? Or is it something more… delicious? The original Pinhead in 1987 teased that they are “demons to some, angels to others.” So can these monsters represent a more heavenly glow? (And is that any better?)
Whenever a mortal encounters an angel in the Bible, Old Testament or New, the first sentence the angel heralds is: “Be not afraid.” Representatives of God on Earth are not easy on the eye, and very quick on the draw. They are not the cute cherubs of Sunday school,...

Warning: The article below contains major spoilers for 2022's "Hellraiser."
David Bruckner's "Hellraiser" reboot boasts exquisite design work and chilling Cenobites, giving diehard fans of the franchise a unique take on who or what unlocks the Lament Configuration box. Unlike the original film, which saw a thirsty — and showstopping — Julia (Claire Higgins) feeding men to resurrect her sleazy ex-lover Frank (Sean Chapman), the reboot focuses on what drives humanity's hunger for pleasure and pain.
Bruckner interweaves themes like substance abuse and recovery into the story, positioning Riley (Odessa A'zion) as someone who has lost control over her vices. Her brother, Matt (Brandon Flynn), has become exhausted with Riley's sobriety journey. In this light, the film's indirect and direct violence becomes a metaphor for how living with addictions can spiral into harming others, intentionally or not.
While the film doesn't deliver the strongest of characters, there's still power in Bruckner's...

This weekend’s anticipated Hellraiser movie is being marketed as a reboot. All the trailers and ads tease of familiar sensations, and suggest that we’re going back to the original source material for Clive Barker’s twisted mingling of pleasure and pain, dominance and submission.
But in truth, this movie could almost function as a sequel to the original Hellraiser flicks—or at least the handful of early good ones before the series devolved into straight-to-vhs and DVD self-parody. The 2022 picture is a new story with all new characters that narratively does not revisit, even in passing, the psychosexual melodrama that everyone forgets underpins Barker’s original 1987 movie, as well as the Barker-penned novella it was based on, The Hellbound Heart. The original is a story about a small family where some members are decent and “normal,” like an oblivious father and his concerned twentysomething daughter, and some are...

This post contains minor spoilers for the new "Hellraiser."
David Bruckner's new film "Hellraiser," the eleventh film in the series, is a proper reboot. It takes iconography and certain key elements of Clive Barker's 1987 original, and flips them into something new but recognizable. The film still centers on a mysterious puzzle box -- the Lament Configuration -- that, when solved, summons Cenobites, a nasty cadre of sadomasochists from beyond the grave. The function of the box, however, is now more similar to what one might have seen in the 1987 TV series "Friday the 13th: The Series." In this version, the box can also grant wishes, but only in exchange for a blood sacrifice.
Some of the similarities that Bruckner's new film has to previous installments in the "Hallraiser" film series are, of course, evident. Most notably, the signature monster is still the Lead Cenobite -- nicknamed "Pinhead...

As we prepare for David Bruckner’s new take on Clive Barker‘s iconic text Hellraiser, what better time to re-evaluate the state of the franchise up to this point?
Even a cursory glance at the ten existing Hellraiser films reveals that not all Cenobite films are made equal. And while the top film is a given, what about the other slots?
Here are my definitive rankings…
10 – Hellraiser: Revelations (2011)
Like many major horror series in the 2000s and beyond, Hellraiser properties were driven by rights issues. Revelations suffers as a result. Dimension Films needed to release a new film or else they would lose the rights, so Revelations was rushed into production and made on the cheap.
Fans of the franchise decried the loss of Doug Bradley, who for the first time refused to reprise his role as Pinhead (let’s be honest: replacement Stephan Smith Collins never stood a chance). Still,...

If filmmaking is a puzzle, casting is a corner piece that, when chosen correctly, helps hold everything together. I recently told you about Coil’s Hellraiser soundtrack that almost was, but what about the cast? Clive Barker captured lightning in a bottle with his 1987 directorial debut, but here are some casting choices that could have impacted Hellraiser significantly.
Doug Bradley as Mover
Barker has known Doug Bradley since high school, so he allowed him his choice between two roles in Hellraiser: the Lead Cenobite or one of the mattress movers. As this was his first film, Bradley nearly chose to play the mover, because he thought it was important for the audience to see his face.
Thankfully, Bradley decided on the Lead Cenobite, and the rest is history. He became a horror icon, reprising the role in the next seven sequels, while Dave Atkins and Oliver Parker (who went on...

"Hellraiser" is like many horror franchises in that it starts out with a classic and gets off a couple of worthy sequels before turning into absolute dreck. It is, however, unlike your typical slasher series in that there's no reason it should go sailing off the rails.
The premise is evergreen: in a moment of curiosity, a person futzes around with the Lament Configuration, unleashes the sadomasochistic Cenobites, and scrambles to bargain their way out of, or simply forestall, eternal torture. Clive Barker's first film juxtaposed the wanton sexual adventurousness of Frank (Sean Chapman) and Julia Cotton (Clare Higgins) against the teenage innocence of their niece/stepdaughter Kirsty (Ashley Laurence). Director Tony Randel continued this narrative with the wondrously depraved "Hellbound: Hellraiser II," while Anthony Hickox broke off from the Cottons for the interesting "Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth." The next six sequels were excruciatingly awful.

Hulu has announced that its reimagining of the 1987 horror classic Hellraiser will debut exclusively on the streamer in the U.S., as part of its annual “Huluween” celebration of fright-filled content, on October 7.
The original film, which introduced horror fans to the iconic monster known as Pinhead, watches as a woman comes upon the newly resurrected, partially formed body of her brother-in-law. She then starts killing for him to revitalize his body, so that he can escape the demonic beings that have been pursuing him after he himself made his way out of their sadistic underworld. Clive Barker directed the pic from his own script, which was itself based on his 1986 novella The Hellbound Heart, with Clare Higgins, Ashley Laurence, Andrew Robinson, Sean Chapman, Robert Hines, Doug Bradley, Nicholas Vince, Simon Bamford, Grace Kirby and Oliver Smith starring.

HBO is in the market to raise Hell.
The network is currently developing a series based on the “Hellraiser” film franchise, which in turn was based on Clive Barker’s novella “The Hellbound Heart,” Variety has confirmed.
The prospective series will not be a reboot of “Hellraiser,” but rather “an elevated continuation and expansion” of its mythology, according to sources with knowledge of the project.
Mark Verheiden and Michael Dougherty are writing the project, while David Gordon Green, whose credits include “Halloween” and whose longstanding relationship with HBO extends to “Eastbound & Down,” “Vice Principals” and “The Righteous Gemstones,” is attached to direct several episodes.
This new project is unrelated to the big screen “Hellraiser” revival from “Dark Knight” writer David S. Goyer, which was announced at Spyglass Media Group almost a year ago.

The original ‘Hellraiser’ was released in 1987 and was written and directed by Clive Barker, the horror followed sexual deviant Frank (Sean Chapman) who inadvertently opens a portal to hell when he tinkers with a box he bought while abroad. The act unleashes gruesome beings called Cenobites, who tear Frank’s body apart. When Frank’s brother (Andrew Robinson) and his wife, Julia (Clare Higgins), move into Frank’s old house, they accidentally bring what is left of Frank back to life. Frank then convinces Julia, his one-time lover, to lure men back to the house so he can use their blood to reconstruct himself.
As well as giving birth to the horrifying image of Pinhead, it went on to spawn nine sequels the first seven of which featured Doug Bradley reprising...

Clive Barker’s 1987 horror movie “Hellraiser” is getting the revival treatment at Gary Barber’s Spyglass Media Group. “The Dark Knight” writer David S. Goyer is on board to produce and pen the script.
Spyglass will finance, develop, and fast track the film for worldwide theatrical distribution. This marks the first project since the company announced its re-launch. Keith Levine will serve as a producer alongside Goyer, under the Phantom Four banner. Chris Stone will oversee the project for Spylass.
The new “Hellraiser” was announced Monday by Barber and described as a “loyal, yet evolved reimagining” of the 1987 original featuring the character Pinhead. Barker wrote and directed “Hellraiser,” which was based on Barker’s novella “The Hellbound Heart,” centering on the resurrection of Frank (Sean Chapman), who had opened the door to an alternate dimension and had his body torn to pieces. That led to nine other movies, plus multiple graphic novels and merchandise.

In this blackly comic gorefest, rereleased after 30 years, a couple encounter a horde of hellish demons when they move into a creepy old house
‘No tears please – it’s a waste of good suffering!” Thirty years on, this rerelease of Clive Barker’s Hellraiser amplifies its mostly intentional black-comic horror.
Clare Higgins gives an entertainingly queenly performance as Julia, who comes back with new husband Larry (Andrew Robinson) to live in his late mother’s creepy old London house, only to find it secretly contains the mangled, zombified body of Larry’s brother – and her former lover – Frank (Sean Chapman), who has sold his soul to netherworldly demons, summoned with an occult antique box.

Tim Roth leads an excellent cast in unpredictable new Sky Atlantic revenge drama Tin Star, out now…
“It’s the disposal,” says Tim Roth. “The killing isn’t the problem, it’s the disposal that’s the problem. You run out of space.” The storage issues faced by serial killers aren’t something to which many of us will have devoted much thought. Roth has. Reassuringly, he’s had reason to thanks to his recent sinister role as real-life murderer Reg Christie in BBC drama Rillington Place. “Charming fella” he jokes.

How does one start a piece about their favorite horror movie of all time? I’ve been wracking my brain trying to come up with the words that will evoke the visions of hellish trumpets and demonic halos that dance in my head whenever I think about Clive Barker’s feature film directorial debut masterpiece, Hellraiser. But I’m not great with the imagery, so I suppose I’ll just give you my personal evolution with the flick. Released theatrically in 1987, I was about three or four years old by the time this movie hit the horror racks at my local video store. I’d like to say my parents had the good sense not to let me see this kind of thing when I was that young, but one of my earliest horror movie memories is of Doug Bradley, the picture of horrific elegance, piecing together the chunks of...

When discussing iconic horror film series of the modern age, the likes of A Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday The 13th, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and Scream always come up, and rightly so, but whereas they are often spoken of with wry, knowing smiles, when it comes to Hellraiser, and Pinhead, brows often become furrowed and conversations become serious, such is the reverence for Clive Barker’s most famous creation.
Those of us who were captivated by Hellraiser when it first graced cinema screens way back in 1987 have never quite forgotten the power and intelligence of that first film, and were equally enrapt by the sequel Hellbound the following year, and to a lesser extent by 1992’s third offering Hell On Earth. For us, the Hellraiser series pretty much concludes, as the subsequent sequels were dismal, so it is a joy to see that Arrow Video have chosen to...

It’s what most horror films are known for: the gore that splatters on the screen. But when done right, the flying viscera becomes more than just gallons of red stuff, it becomes a chilling reminder of the fragility of the human body and of the ingenuity of filmmakers in making our most twisted fears and fantasies into a stomach churning reality. Grab your barf bag!

Antichrist (2009)- His and her pain
As far as horror sub-genres go, torture porn is up there with found footage as the most understandably reviled by audiences. With Antichrist, Lars Von Trier attempted to write a film that dealt with his personal demons. Confessing that he had been suffering from depression while writing the screenplay, Trier ended up bringing torture porn to its logical conclusion by taking the title of the sub-genre all too literally and creating a macabre near-masterpiece out of trashy genre origins.

We’ve seen the clichés time and time again: flesh-munching zombies, deranged hitchhikers, disturbingly naive teenage babysitters, evil cliques of high school girls, whackos off dirt roads in rural America…. However, there are many movies that thrive upon original ideas and unique plots. One of the most imaginative figures in the realm of contemporary horror is Clive Barker. He has always eschewed formulas and clichés in favor of experimental (and often confusing or deceptive) visual storytelling devices and atmosphere.
Barker first formed a theater in London at age 21 to produce the plays he wrote, all of which were recognized for their horrific but fantastical elements. The profoundly unique and imaginative qualities that composed Barker's work is what led his novels to being adapted into films, which then inspired him to direct his own: enter Hellraiser (1987) . Since nothing major is happening in the world of gaming or movies this week, co-host Sean Chapman and I decided to take things easy this week and simple talk about what’s on our minds. Which, in this case, means PlayStation network issues, downloadable video games like Journey and Tokyo Jungle, a horrible shopping experience at Best Buy, and Kathryn Bigelow’s acclaimed Zero Dark Thirty. There is no one particular topic this episode, but with lots of lively discussion (and over-the-top vulgarity) about some fun and interesting movies and games, this turned out to be a surprisingly entertaining podcast!
Enjoy, and join us next when we will hopefully offer a full review of the 2-part animated Batman: The Dark Knight Returns movie.

For our final show of 2012 – we will be taking an episode off next week – co-host Sean Chapman and I have, naturally, decided to take a look back at the year in entertainment, offering our thoughts on the best movies, TV shows, and video games of the year! If you have been reading my recent 2012 retrospective lists, you have heard some of my picks before, but we go into much greater detail on the podcast, and Sean’s thoughts on the year in gaming are exclusive to the podcast, as is his long rambling segment on a four-year-old game he discovered a few months ago.
In any case, the show is broken down into segments in the time chart below, and you...

Our long-expected episode reviewing The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is finally here! The highly anticipated film arrived in theatres last Friday, set a box office record, and was roundly enjoyed by many! Thus, on today’s show, Sean Chapman and I sat down for one of our trademark in-depth discussions on the film, reviewing and analyzing every element of the movie in great detail. We are both quite positive on the film, even if we have some minor reservations, and I, for one, have warmed to the movie a bit more than when I wrote my initial review, thanks to a very enjoyable second viewing over the weekend.
Enjoy the show, and come back next week for our big end-of-year episode, with top-ten lists,...

With The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey arriving in theatres on December 14th, Sean Chapman and I continue our trek through the lands of Middle Earth by offering a full-blown audio commentary on the 1977 animated Hobbit film by Rankin Bass! If you have never seen this camp children’s classic before, now is the perfect time! It is a fun and interesting interpretation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s classic novel, and with this special audio commentary, you can listen to Sean and I discuss and dissect the film while you watch!
There are instructions in the episode to sync the podcast with the video, but if you don’t want to use the podcast as a commentary, you can always just listen to the...

With The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey arriving in theatres on December 14th, Sean Chapman and I continue our trek through the lands of Middle Earth by diving into the Lord of the Rings film trilogy. These are my favorite films of all time, and among Sean’s favorites, so we have plenty to say, our exhaustive discussion covering everything from the production and adaptation process to an in-depth breakdown of each major character. It’s a fun, lively, and insightful look back at a true cinematic phenomenon, and reminds us why The Hobbit is such an exciting prospect!

With The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey arriving in theatres on December 14th, Sean Chapman and I have decided it is finally time to dive into the world of J.R.R. Tolkien, on fronts literary, cinematic, and otherwise. We’ll be discussing Middle Earth for the next month or so, but on this first Tolkien-themed episode, we limit our chat to the books themselves: The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. These are two of our very favorite books of all time, and to do them justice, we trace our own personal history with the series, offer in-depth thoughts on each work, and briefly explore the massive expanded universe Professor Tolkien created.
