As a general rule, hitmen should probably steer clear of doctors. In the movies, at least, it never leads to anything good. For example, Michael Keaton’s title character recently received a devastating dementia diagnosis in Knox Goes Away, barely managing to get his affairs in order and clear his son of a murder rap before losing his mind.
Joe Flood (Dave Bautista), the central character in The Killer’s Game, suffers from debilitating headaches and double vision while fulfilling lethal assignments and dutifully undergoes a series of medical tests. He’s informed that he has an incurable disease that will quickly destroy his faculties and bring death within three months. So Joe naturally does what any self-respecting contract killer, especially one who’s recently fallen in love, would do. He puts out a hit on himself, paying a $2 million bounty so that he’ll leave the world with dignity and...

Stars: Charlotte Kirk, Phillip Winchester, Stephanie Beacham, Colm Meany, Sean Pertwee | Written and Directed by Neil Marshall
A young crook known as Duchess (Charlotte Kirk) gets involved with the nefarious Robert (Phillip Winchester) and the underworld of diamond trafficking. Her wrong turns take her halfway across the world, and she ends up being left for dead when a deal quickly goes wrong. Duchess is quick to try and seek retribution, and that means taking everyone on.
The good thing — “thing,” not “things” — about Duchess is even just by watching the trailer, seeing a poster, or reading the cast list, you know exactly what type of movie you’re going to get. Unfortunately, that type is fairly unsavoury. Forget any Guy Ritchie film, Fight Club, or Layer Cake, this time, it’s never been a worse thing to be British. A smorgasbord of accents from across the Western Hemisphere, the Brits...

Escapism is in high demand. News headlines being the stereoscopic View-Master reel of gut-punch tragedy that they currently are, people understandably want out. Those with the means and the energy can travel, and for everybody else: there’s A Discovery of Witches on Netflix.
To be transparent, this isn’t the best AMC fantasy series that’s just arrived on Netflix in the US; that would be Interview with the Vampire, which may be the best series of any kind to arrive anywhere for some time. Breathe deep the heady brilliance of that, and then spritz yourself with A Discovery of Witches’ refreshing mist.
Adapted from Deborah Harkness’ trilogy of novels, A Discovery of Witches is about the kind of woman that little girls dream they’ll grow up to become, before real life and carbohydrates intervene. Played by Teresa Palmer, Dr Diana Bishop is a Yale professor with a...

It's a new week and a ton of AMC shows are coming to Netflix! It's like they took all their most popular shows and threw them at Netflix. But with the chance to rewatch some of my faves, I am definitely not complaining. There are also a few non-amc movies and shows coming to the streaming service.
First up this week is A Discovery of Witches seasons 1-3! The series based on the popular book series by Deborah Harkness first hit TV screens in 2019 and became just as popular as the books. It hits Netflix on Monday, Aug. 19, 2024.
The series stars Teresa Palmer, Matthew Goode, Alex Kingston, Adelle Leonce, and Edward Blumel. It follows historian and witch Diana Bishop as she comes into her powers solving the mysteries of the Ashmole 782. But she also happens to fall in love with the witch's worst enemy: a vampire.

One of the coolest and most beloved sub-genres for thriller, action, and drama fans is the spy genre and there’s a good reason. In a spy film or series, we get complicated and cool characters who put their lives on the line by going against numerous people and instead of always letting their guns talk they use more covert tactics, which are always thrilling to watch. So, Netflix being what it is, it has a large library of content and also some of the best spy shows you can find and that’s what inspired us to compile a list of the best spy shows you can watch on Netflix right now.

Doctor Who loves its Christmas Specials almost as much as it loves its mysterious women. In fact, the current Doctor, played by Ncuti Gatwa, started his tenure with a bit of both. “The Church on Ruby Road” introduced viewers to companion Ruby Sunday (Millie Gibson), whose parentage drove the previous season.
In the first clip from the next Christmas Special, it appears that the Doctor is on the trail of a different woman, who is surely more than she seems. Bridgerton vet Nicola Coughlan stars as Joy, an optimistic but lonely woman who draws the Doctor’s attention in “Joy to the World.” In a video message that she sent to attendees at San Diego Comic-Con, Coughlan described Joy as “a determined woman whose life is changed forever when she meets the Doctor.”

Warning: spoilers for Doctor Who finale “Empire of Death”.
The mystery of Ruby Sunday has been solved, and after teasing the parentage of Millie Gibson’s motherless Mancunian since she arrived in Doctor Who’s 2023 Christmas special, series 14 finale “Empire of Death” brought everything full circle. Ncuti Gatwa’s Fifteen had been helping Ruby try to trace her family tree all series, and now, we know who her mother is… a regular human woman with no supernatural or alien connections.
Doctor Who showrunner Russell T. Davies has now confirmed that the big twist of Ruby’s mother being a young woman called Louise Alison Miller (played by The Responder‘s Faye McKeever) was directly inspired by one of Star Wars’ most divisive reveals.
As soon as we first saw baby Ruby being dropped off at the church on Ruby Road, there were swirling fan theories, with the wildest suggesting she...

In recent years, cancel culture has peaked, as many netizens always seem to be on the edge. Although it has its pros, as it allows users to hold major industry biggies accountable for their unacceptable behavior, it also has its fair share of cons.
Being a double-edged sword, while it gives users the power to call out big names, it can also cause unprecedented levels of damage to one’s reputation if used maliciously. Arrow star Alex Kingston too shared her concern regarding cancel culture’s dangerous repercussions.

Warning: Contains spoilers for ‘Rogue’
This first series of Doctor Who’s latest reboot has been a lot of things — silly (‘Space Babies’), spectacular (‘The Devil’s Chord’), intense (‘Boom’), scary (‘73 Yards’), and, by the end of last week’s Black Mirror aping ‘Dot And Bubble’, pretty damn bleak even too. But not since Ncuti Gatwa and Millie Gibson’s first outing as the Doctor and Ruby Sunday, ‘The Church On Ruby Road’, have we had an episode as outrageously fun Regency-era romp ‘Rogue’. Poured from the pens of guest writers Kate Herron and Briony Redman, this week’s adventure is good old-fashioned monster-of-the-week Who with a deliciously queer twist.
Leaving Finetime well behind, ‘Rogue’ finds the Doctor and Ruby in early 19th-century Bath, enjoying a ball at the stately mansion home of the Duchess of Pemberton (a suitably hissable Indira Varma). All britches, bodices, “You cad!” admonishments, and anachronistic...

Steven Moffat has penned cancel culture comedy drama Douglas Is Cancelled. Here’s the trailer for the new programme.
Before Steven Moffat became known for writing some of the greatest episodes of Doctor Who, like The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances, The Girl In The Fireplace, Blink, Silence In The Library/Forest Of The Dead and then showrunning the Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi eras, he was a prolific comedy writer.
His first series, Press Gang, was a huge success and he followed it up by drawing on his own divorce for the fantastic, farcical Joking Apart. Though school sitcom Chalk was a misfire, his greatest sitcom success was Coupling, a tightly plotted ensemble sitcom that included one episode with half the dialogue in Hebrew and another in split screen, with several plots taking place simultaneously.
Moffat’s next series is comedy drama Douglas Is Cancelled. The synopsis reads as...

One of the most attractive qualities of Doctor Who is the fact that the show constantly changes the actors who play the main roles of the Doctor himself and his companions. While some may find the recasting annoying, as the actors whose characters you liked leave the show forever, others find that this change is what keeps the show interesting.

Whether it be the iteration you first saw on TV that made you fall in love with the chaotic universe, or the one that stole your heart while watching. On May 11, the first two episodes with the new Doctor, the magnificent Ncuti Gatwa, were released. We invite you to dive into nostalgia and travel through time without the Tardis recalling the best episodes of the cult series.
1. The Day of the Doctor – A Special Episode
In honor of the fiftieth anniversary of Doctor Who, the BBC prepared a special surprise for fans in the form of a special episode in which not only David Tennant's Tenth and Matt Smith's Eleventh faced each other, but also the darker incarnation of the Time Lord that both later tried to erase from their lives – the War Doctor who participated in the Time War between the Time Lords and the Daleks. It was he who had to destroy them both, to end the endless suffering.

Grey’s Anatomy may have a lot in common with long-running hospital shows like ER on the surface. But TV showrunner Shonda Rimes revealed the slight details that made them very different from each other.
‘ER’ and ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ focused on two completely different things Alex Kingston, Paul McCrane, Ming-Na, Michael Michele, Anthony Edwards, Goran Visnjic, Noah Wyle, Maura Tierney, Eriq La Salle, Sherry Stringfield, Laura Innes | NBC/Getty Images
ER and Grey’s Anatomy would inevitably have things in common, with both being successful medical dramas. But the genesis of each show was different. ER was created by Michael Crichton, and was based on his own experiences going to law school. Meanwhile, after watching a TV show, Rhimes was inspired to make Grey’s Anatomy.
Before Rhimes came up with Grey’s, she was actually working on a war series. But current events dissuaded her from going any further with the show.

“Douglas Is Cancelled” will see Hugh Bonneville play a middle aged and widely-respected news anchor called Douglas Bellowes while Gillan stars as his canny sidekick Madeline.
Douglas lives a perfect life. He enjoys his privileged status as national treasure and host of current affairs show “Live at Six” while off-air he shares a harmonious home with wife Sheila, a newspaper editor.
But their world is turned upside down when, at a family wedding, he’s overheard making an “ill-advised joke.” As a guest threatens to expose Douglas on social media the rumor mill goes into overdrive and sparks off a digital storm that quickly upends his life and career. Choosing your favourite Doctor Who episode feels a bit like choosing your favourite child, except you probably don’t have 800-plus children, so maybe it’s even worse.
But that’s exactly what Doctor Who Magazine inflicted on fans earlier this year, sugaring the pill ever so slightly by combining all the multiple-episode stories into one, which helpfully narrowed the choice from over 800 episodes to 300 “TV adventures”.
Who fans were tasked with rating all episodes out of ten – narrowing it down to 37 stories – and then asked to pick their top five from this list. After much number crunching, the top 10 TV adventures were revealed.
And there was one clear winner: “Heaven Sent”.
This 2015 Peter Capaldi-era episode was certainly powerful and memorable. The Doctor was grieving Clara Oswald (Jenna Coleman), after she was executed in the previous episode, “Face The Raven”. In “Heaven Sent”, The Doctor is trapped in a strange castle,...

Warning: contains minor Spoilers for Doctor Who episode “Wild Blue Yonder”
We’ve been speculating about the 60th anniversary Doctor Who specials for well over a year now, with one detail after another being drip-fed to fans via announcements and trailers, and episode one “The Star Beast” having recently had a starry premiere screening, but with mere weeks to go we still know next to nothing about the second episode, “Wild Blue Yonder”.
This was a deliberate choice by showrunner Russell T Davies. Speaking in the latest issue of Doctor Who Magazine, Davies revealed his dream that the second special would air with no previews whatsoever:
“This is the secret one,” Davies explained, “I wanted to take one of the Specials and say ‘Let’s protect this one. Let’s try to reveal nothing about it’”.
While the magazine’s preview feature for “Wild Blue Yonder” keeps the cards firmly close to its chest,...

This take on the first-century Iceni heroine looks like a home movie, and Olga Kurylenko’s lack of majesty in the lead role doesn’t help
Boudica, the Iceni queen who led an insurrection against the Roman colonisers in first-century Britain, is one of the great feminist icons from ancient history, but there are surprisingly few cinematic representations of her.
There was a British TV show from 1978 called Warrior Queen that had the great Siân Phillips daubed in woad, a just-ok film from 2003 also called Warrior Queen that starred Alex Kingston, and a smattering of others in various languages, mostly for TV. And, of course, there’s the utterly iconic segment in Horrible Histories where Queen B (Martha Howe-Douglas) sings a grungy ditty about how her bloody campaign.. But all that still leaves room for a great feature film about the toughest, most heroic gal to come out of Norfolk,...

Be sure to lock your doors when you get home this Halloween, for a sinister, unearthly presence willing be walking the streets this All Hallow’s Eve.
We don’t mean actual ghosts, obviously, we’re talking about all those precocious costumed youths in shoddily applied face paint having the audacity to knock on your door demanding some of the multipack of snack-size sweets you got from Tesco on the way home from work. Bought them for trick-or-treaters? Pffft. Those Haribo were all for you, and you know it.
So embrace the darkness (and the sugar), draw the curtains, and shut out the world ready to scare yourself silly with these classic British TV ghost stories.

A classic in the ghost story genre, this deeply atmospheric and unnerving production is Jonathan Miller’s adaptation of the 1904 M. R. James tale “Oh Whistle, and I’ll Come to You,...

Are you craving some spy action? If you’ve exhausted the Bond franchise, completed the Mission: Impossible collection, and revisited the Bourne movies more times than is medically advisable, perhaps it’s time to look to television.
A lot of different shows come under the heading of a “spy thriller”. You’ll find action, family drama, comedy, politics and even the odd alien invasion all represented in this list. But there are a few things that they all have in common. They all feature twists and turns and characters keeping deep, dark secrets. They all have a tendency towards ruthlessness – don’t get too attached to any one person! The possibility that any character in the show might be killed off at any moment, up to and including the protagonist, is one of the things that keeps viewers on the edge of their seats. And they are all compelling, unmissable TV.

Amy Pond and Rory Williams are perhaps the most beloved companions the Doctor ever had. Their evolution on screen in terms of character development is among the most extensive character evolutions of the show. For those that haven’t met the Ponds, let’s discuss who they are and how exactly they have evolved in the “Doctor Who” series.
Who Are Amy Pond and Rory Williams?
Amy Pond and Rory Williams, collectively known in the series as The Ponds, were the companions and in-laws to Matt Smith’s Eleventh Doctor. Though they’re husband and wife, they’re referred to as The Ponds due to Rory’s timid personality compared to Amy’s confidence and decisiveness — hence the fans’ joke that Rory should’ve taken Amy’s last name.
Peter Capaldi’s Twelfth Doctor, though appearing later in the show, after the Ponds, stated on an occasion that there would...

Now we know the meaning of the watch. Last episode, traumatised witch Lena arrived at Sept-Tours wearing Benjamin’s stolen jacket – left out for exactly that purpose – and in which he’d planted a message. In the pocket was Philippe de Clermont’s engraved Cartier watch, a talisman of cruelty telling Matthew that Benjamin was the WWII Nazi who had tortured Philippe to madness.
If you were – like Benjamin – trying to find the perfect way to torment Matthew ‘Guilt would be my middle name if it weren’t Gabriel Philippe Bertrand Sebastien’ Clairmont, that would be the way to do it. They may be magical creatures ruled by mystical rites, but when it comes to family, the vampires, witches and daemons are no different from the rest of us. Gather the clan together under one roof and pretty soon it’s all rivalry, resentment and stalking out of dinner in a huff. One brother doesn’t like his new sister-in-law, the youngest wants the eldest to move with the times. ‘You’re breaking an ancient covenant’, ‘You didn’t tell me I carried a genetic disease that turned my vampire children into uncontrollably vicious monsters’… All the usual beef. The only difference is that the de Clermonts get to do it in all a stunningly lit castle over a glass of what must be excellent wine.
Season three got off to a mournful start as Diana and Matthew time-walked straight to poor Aunt Em’s death bed.

This review contains A Discovery of Witches spoilers.
The moment Phoebe asked Marcus “Can you turn into a bat?” was the moment A Discovery of Witches’ newest couple won my heart. Possibly it happened slightly earlier when Phoebe replied to Marcus’ declaration that he was the Grand Master of the Knights of Lazarus with the words “And I’m Princess Leia”, but the bat thing cinched it.
In a series so weighted by ominous portent and fraught faces delivering either bloodthirsty threats or speeches prophesying the end of times, a bit of levity goes a long way. It’s the dollop of salted caramel ice cream on the side of the brownie of doom. Finally, somebody here is having fun!
It’s been a long time since those somebodies were Matthew and Diana, who have really been through the wringer in season two. When was the last time we saw those two smile?...
