America's fascination with serial killers has been an exploitable cultural phenomenon since long before the term was coined in the 1970s. People read books, wrote plays, and followed newspaper coverage of notorious murderers like Jack the Ripper, Charles Starkweather, and Richard Speck. A cold-blooded murder in any capacity is baffling enough to normal or normal-ish people; going on a wanton killing spree for kicks or because the lunar cycle is in the proper alignment is just bananas. How and why do minds break like this?
When a (one-time) master novelist like Thomas Harris or a naturalist like John McNaughton is asking these questions, there can be great value in examining the minds of monsters. When Jonathan Demme is adapting the former, there is also the opportunity to make a rewatchable, Oscar-winning classic of a film. When Ryan Murphy is at the helm, you're going to wind up with a lot...

It’s the fall of 1975 when writer Ben Mears (Lewis Pullman) returns to his childhood home in rural Maine, hoping the sleepy enclave might offer something in the way of inspiration. His previous books have been derided by critics. His publishers, it seems, are losing patience.
Ben spends most of his days in the library, where his presence and research into the archives becomes the talk of the town. Susan Norton (Makenzie Leigh), a fledgling real estate broker, catches his eye and the two form an easy friendship that eventually morphs into romance. But just as Ben’s settling in and tempering the suspicions of locals, one boy (Cade Woodward) disappears and another (Nicholas Crovetti) dies. It’s easy to wonder if this new guy — quiet, strange, from the big city — might somehow be involved.

Writer/Director Gary Dauberman’s Salem’s Lot makes it easy to see why the previous two adaptations of Stephen King’s 1975 novel were miniseries. King packs his stories with rich character work and humanity, so much so that the 1979 and 2004 adaptations couldn’t condense 439 pages into any less than 181 minutes of runtime. After sitting on the shelves for years, the new adaptation gets jettisoned to streaming, along with most of King’s text. It’s an adaptation that feels heavily tampered with, gutting all story and character development solely in favor of vampire scares.
For the uninitiated, Salem’s Lot follows successful writer Ben Mears (Lewis Pullman) as he returns to his hometown of Jerusalem’s Lot for inspiration for his next novel. His arrival coincides with that of shop owner Kurt Barlow (Alexander Ward) and his assistant Richard Straker (Pilou Asbæk). While Ben reconnects with his old town and its new residents,...

After a number of lengthy delays, it was recently announced that Warner Bros. and New Line's re-adaptation of Stephen King's Salem's Lot will debut on the Max streaming service on October 3rd, and the first reviews and reactions are now online following the movie's world premiere at Beyond Fest last night.
Expectations were not very high after the film was pulled from its original theatrical debut and placed on the shelf for such a long time, but a lot of critics seem to have been won over by this new take on King's seminal vampire tale.
However, quite a few others were not nearly as impressed, and are not at all surprised that it's heading straight to streaming.
While the movie is said to feature some effective jolts, it sounds like director Gary Dauberman has taken a much lighter approach to the deadly serious novel than the well-regarded Tobe Hooper adaptation,...

Released in 2024, Gary Dauberman’s Salem’s Lot presents a new cinematic telling of Stephen King’s legendary 1975 vampire novel. As a story exploring the sinister forces threatening a small Maine town, the source material has spawned multiple screen adaptations over the decades, most notably Tobe Hooper’s acclaimed 1979 TV miniseries.
In this latest film version, Dauberman—known for his work on horror films like Annabelle and It—aims to balance faithfulness to King’s chilling tale with enjoyable scares for modern audiences.
The plot follows novelist Ben Mears as he returns to his childhood home in Jerusalem’s Lot. There, strange events coincide with the arrival of antique store owners Richard Straker and Kurt Barlow. As residents begin to disappear, Ben and others come to suspect the village is suffering from an infestation of the undead.

If you’re going to remake a classic Stephen King adaptation, you’d better do it right. Nobody’s ever topped Brian De Palma’s original “Carrie,” no matter how hard they tried. “It: Chapter One” knocked it out of the park, but “It: Chapter Two” brought it back into the park and poured manure on it, so they more-or-less cancel each other out. The TV mini-series remake of “The Shining” isn’t as bad as everyone remembers, but let’s not go nuts. It’s pretty grim when the 2019 version of “Pet Sematary” is your gold standard, since quality-wise even that’s just a lateral move.
Gary Dauberman’s remake of “Salem’s Lot,” however, raises the bar. It may be the only Stephen King remake that gets it right. Tobe Hooper’s classic mini-series adaptation from 1979 is still scary, and it’s a heck of a lot more insidious than Dauberman’s,...

Plot: Author Ben Mears returns to his childhood home of Jerusalem’s Lot in search of inspiration for his next book only to discover his hometown is being preyed upon by a bloodthirsty vampire.
Review: I need to get it right out of the way that I’m not the biggest fan of the original 1979 Tobe Hooper version of Salem’s Lot. The story is interesting but I find it to be a 3-hour slog with about 15 minutes of cool moments. So I was ecstatic to see it finally get the remake treatment. Or rather, I was glad to see the book adapted another time, to try and get it right (they tried again in 2004 with another so-so miniseries). This would have been the first big-screen adaptation of the novel, but it was delayed for years, with Warner Bros eventually cancelling its theatrical release in favour of streaming release on Max.

Gary Dauberman's "Salem's Lot" has had a bumpy ride. The Stephen King adaptation was originally supposed to hit theaters in 2022. Then it got delayed to 2023. Then it got pulled from the release calendar entirely. Since "Salem's Lot" is a Warner Bros. production, there was a growing fear that this vampire movie would go the way of WB's "Batgirl" and "Coyote vs. Acme" and never see the light of day. King got involved, taking to Twitter and pondering why the studio was sitting on the flick. "Not sure why WB is holding it back; not like it's embarrassing, or anything," the master of horror said. Rumors eventually began to swirl that "Salem's Lot" might skip theaters entirely and go directly to WB's streaming service, Max. Sure enough, the studio finally announced that was the case: "Salem's Lot" is destined to stream on Max this October, just in time for Halloween season.

Revisiting an iconic work by Stephen King takes guts. It’s especially tough when the property has already been adapted by a fan-favorite director. Yet Salem’s Lot looks to do exactly that, reviving the vampire franchise for the first time in nearly twenty years. This time, the King property gets the feature film treatment, hoping to differentiate itself from the 1979 Tobe Hooper and 2004 Mikael Salomon mini-series events. While this Salem’s Lot looks great, the shorter runtime leaves it sprinting through the exposition. It becomes a problem despite moments of brilliance.

Tim Burton rose during a very peculiar time in popular culture. The terse, depressive adult dramas of the 1970s had given way to the ultra-slick, spectacle-heavy blockbusters of the 1980s as a new generation of adventure films entered the marketplace, helmed by precocious filmmakers who spent their youths in actual film schools. At the same time, the financial and cultural conservatism of the Reagan administration had amplified the voices of rebellious punkers and enterprising artistic weirdos who wanted nothing to do with the commercial world. The odd circumstances -- an increase of money paired with a general antiestablishment malaise -- were just right for anti-mainstream freaks to break into the public eye.
All of a sudden, filmmakers like David Lynch, Tobe Hooper, and Paul Verhoeven could make big hits, and Tim Burton could be embraced by the public at large. Burton, in particular, could not have risen to fame in any other epoch.

Every once in a while, a movie comes around that’s so viscerally different from what came before it that the fabric of cinema is permanently altered. To say that future filmmakers were “influenced” by it almost feels like an understatement, as its legacy has less to do with inspiring specific aesthetic innovations than reconceptualizing the way we think about moving images.
It’s somewhat ironic that a movie titled “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” went on to become such a film. Tobe Hooper’s 1974 slasher masterpiece embraced its lowbrow status with its matter-of-fact title and unapologetic gore, likely seen by many as a cheap attempt to ride shock value into a quick box office gold mine. But as any horror lover will be quick to tell you, that could not be further from the truth. While the film still holds up as a fantastic standalone slasher flick — this writer would...

Provocatively disarranging its chronology, this gruesome shocker sports with misogyny but its technical brilliance is undeniable
Writer-director Jt Mollner shuffles the narrative deck with this macabre, ingenious serial-killer horror whose chapters are shown out of linear order. Each storytelling card is dealt with insolent provocation, a swaggeringly unhelpful contribution to the issues of sexual politics that we see male and female arresting officers debate at the very end. It recalls the look of movies made four or five decades ago; shot on 35mm film by actor turned cinematographer Giovanni Ribisi, it is a grisly shocker sporting with misogyny and the final-girl trope. The Criterion Channel’s at its best when October rolls around, consistently engaging in the strongest horror line-ups of any streamer. 2024 will bring more than a few iterations of their spooky programming: “Horror F/X” highlights the best effects-based scares through the likes of Romero, Cronenberg, Lynch, Tobe Hooper, James Whale; “Witches” does what it says on the tin (and inside the tin is the underrated Italian anthology film featuring Clint Eastwood cuckolded by Batman); “Japanese Horror” runs the gamut of classics; a Stephen King series puts John Carpenter and The Lawnmower Man on equal playing ground; October’s Criterion Editions are Rosemary’s Baby, Night of the Hunter, Häxan; a made-for-tv duo includes Carpenter’s underrated Someone’s Watching Me!; meanwhile, The Wailing and The Babadook stream alongside a collection of Cronenberg and Stephanie Rothman titles.
Otherwise, Winona Ryder and Raúl Juliá are given retrospectives, as are filmmakers Arthur J. Bressan Jr. and Lionel Rogosin.

The real life serial killer who inspired classic cinema villains including Norman Bates, Leatherface and Buffalo Bill, Ed Gein will be the subject of the upcoming third season of Ryan Murphy’s Netflix anthology series “Monster,” which debuted with a Jeffrey Dahmer-centered first season and continues with second season “The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story” this week.
THR reports that Charlie Hunnam will be playing the role of Ed Gein in the upcoming third season of Netflix’s “Monster” series.

Known as “The Butcher of Plainfield,” Ed Gein was a grave robber and murderer who committed his monstrous crimes in the 1940s and the 1950s in Plainfield, Wisconsin.

Serial producer Ryan Murphy, the man behind “American Horror Story,” “Feud,” “Pose” and many more, is already sharpening his knife for the third in his “Monster” series, which focuses on serial killers. With “Monsters: The Lyle and Eric Menendez Story” debuting on Netflix later this week (and second in the gruesome collection after “Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” from 2022), Murphy disclosed at the red carpet premiere that next in the queue will be something of a classic—a look at Ed Gein, the Wisconsin killer whose murders in the 1950s loosely inspired the Alfred Hitchcock film “Psycho,” and, when more of the repulsive particulars became known, inspired Tobe Hooper’s “Texas Chain Saw Massacre,” the Buffalo Bill character from “Silence of the Lambs,” and Rob Zombie’s “House of 1000 Corpses.”

Charlie Hunnam has taken on some killer roles over the years, from Jax Teller in Sons Of Anarchy, to Percy Fawcett in The Lost City Of Z, to Ray in The Gentlemen — heck, the man even played King Arthur, the titular role, in Guy Ritchie's King Arthur: Legend Of The Sword. Now, after a jaunt to Zack Snyder's Rebel Moon, Hunnam is lining up an actual killer role — a serial killer one, in fact. Per Deadline's reporting, at the premiere of Netflix's Monsters: The Lyle And Erik Menendez Story on Monday, showrunner Ryan Murphy not only unexpectedly announced that a third season of his true crime anthology series is in the works, but that Hunnam will star in it as infamous murderer Ed Gein.
Originating with 2022's Evan Peters starring Dahmer — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, prolific TV creator Murphy's show tackles a different real life monster with each new cycle.

Ryan Murphy surprised the audience at the premiere of Netflix’s Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story on Monday with news about the next installment of his anthology series for the streamer. As he introduced onstage the cast of Monsters, including Javier Bardem and Chloë Sevigny, he announced that there will be a third season starring Sons of Anarchy alum Charlie Hunnam as Ed Gein.
Murphy didn’t provide additional details about the project, including writers. His announcement was unexpected, I hear, and it is unclear whether all deals for the new installment are done yet.
Season 3 harkens back to the original Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story as it centers on another twisted serial killer. Edward Gein, known as Butcher of Plainfield or the Plainfield Ghoul, confessed to murdering two women in the 1950s and also allegedly made trophies out of bodies and skin of corpses he exhumed from graveyards.

The first half of this 80-minute roadside diner siege horror plays out almost like a section of an anthology film, calling to mind the nasty little slasher The Gas Station in John Carpenter and Tobe Hooper’s Body Bags project. The opening 40 minutes or so mostly sticks with the same location, and the focus is initially on one character: newly pregnant waitress Nancy (Jessica Belkin), whose dad (Jeremy Sisto) owns a modest diner in the middle of nowhere, and who has put her in charge of that evening’s imminent night shift. It’s not exactly the world’s most enviable nepo baby gig, even if you’re not attempting to suppress mounting waves of nausea, and so Nancy is cranky and in no mood to take any flak from either...

You used to hear the refrain from horror film fanatics with a lot more frequency – the original was so much scarier.
And while this is still true to some degree (the films of John Carpenter have been remade with an oddly uniform lousiness), there are still plenty of horror films that have been remade well. Sometimes the remakes are just as good as the original. In rare cases, it even surpasses the original.
Here is our definitive list of the very best horror remakes ever.
(United Artists) “Invasion of the Body Snatchers” (1978)
Don Siegel’s 1956 classic “Invasion of the Body Snatchers” is based on Jack Finney’s story “The Body Snatchers,” which was serialized in Collier’s in 1954 and published as a novel shortly after, has been remade several times over the years. But the very best iteration is still the 1978 version, the first since Siegel’s, from director Philip Kaufman and writer W.D. Richter.

To the chagrin of many Stephen King fans, Salem’s Lot — the latest movie adaptation of the horror master’s 1975 bestseller — will bypass theaters and debut on Max.
So we’ll be deprived of the big screen experience, and non-subscribers will have a hard time accessing the film.
That’s the bad news.
(Max (YouTube screenshot))
The good news is that early buzz about the project has been ecstatic, and a new trailer released today promises a suitably spine-tingling experience.
Over the familiar strains of Gordon Lightfoot’s “Sundown,” author Ben Mears (Lewis Pullman) “returns to his childhood home of Jerusalem’s Lot in search of inspiration for his next book, only to discover his hometown is being preyed upon by a bloodthirsty vampire.”
The film also stars Alfre Woodard, Makenzie Leigh, Bill Camp, and William Sadler.

After a number of lengthy delays, it was recently announced that Warner Bros. and New Line's re-adaptation of Stephen King's Salem's Lot will debut on the Max streaming service on October 3rd, and the first trailer has finally been released online.
The teaser introduces writer Ben Mears (Thunderbolts* actor Lewis Pullman), as he returns to his childhood town of Jerusalem's Lot to do research for his new book. Ben soon realizes that the "haunted" house that traumatized him as a child has some new occupants, and they have sinister plans for The Lot.
Ben joins Susan Norton (Makenzie Leigh), Doctor Cody (Alfre Woodard), Mark Petrie (Jordan Preston Carter) and Father Callahan (John Benjamin Hickey) in an attempt to stop the evil Kurt Barlow before he consumes the entire town.

“’Salem’s Lot” is finally on its way.
The new adaptation of Stephen King’s 1975 novel, considered by many to be one of the author’s very best, was shot in the summer of 2021 (with additional photography a year later). And then it just sat. For a while it was unclear whether Warner Bros. was just going to scrap the movie altogether, as it did with “Batgirl” and “Coyote vs. Acme.” Eventually the movie was shifted to premiere on the company’s streaming platform Max. We now have a date that it’ll debut (October 3) and a brand new trailer. Watch it below.
Lewis Pullman plays Ben Mears, a novelist who is drawn back to his hometown of Jerusalem’s Lot, obsessed with a supposedly haunted house, with a history of bad fortune, which has become even more evil with the arrival of an ancient supernatural force. Makenzie Leigh, Alfre Woodard,...

The long-awaited movie adaptation of Stephen King’s Salem’s Lot from director Gary Dauberman (Annabelle Comes Home) is coming exclusively to Max this Halloween season.
Salem’s Lot premieres on Max on October 3, 2024.
Watch the official trailer for Max’s Salem’s Lot below.
Stephen King had recently tweeted praise for the film. He wrote earlier this year, “I’ve seen the new Salem’S Lot and it’s quite good. Old-school horror filmmaking: slow build, big payoff. Not sure why WB is holding it back; not like it’s embarrassing, or anything.”
Salem’s Lot 2024 is set “circa 1975 (when King’s book was first published).”
In Salem’s Lot 2024, “Haunted by an incident from his childhood, author Ben Mears returns to his hometown of Jerusalem’s Lot in search of inspiration for his next book, only to discover the town is being preyed upon by a bloodthirsty vampire and his loyal servant.

There are good Stephen King adaptations, there are bad Stephen King adaptations, and there are — even in this our ongoing King movie Renaissance — a whole lot of adaptations in between. The new "Salem's Lot" movie adaptation has had a ton of potential from the jump, both because one of the author's scariest books is decades overdue for an on-screen update, and because of the early footage the /Film team saw at CinemaCon back in 2022 made an epic first impression.
And then a curious thing happened: the film never came out. Initially set to open on September 9, 2022, "Salem's Lot" got pushed to April 21, 2023, and then it got removed from the release date calendar altogether. This happened at a time when studio Warner Bros. was going through some changes, and outright shelving movies like "Batgirl." There was a fear that Warner Bros. might never release "Salem's Lot," something that really bugged author Stephen King.

Much has been said about Stephen King, the prolific author of dozens of novels, screenplays, teleplays, and even a few comic books and a stage musical. However, less has been said about Stephen King: Pop Culture Influencer. While King's name has become about as prestigious as other writers whose works have stood the test of time like Shakespeare and Edgar Allan Poe, King is one of the few titans of culture who's been alive while his star rose to such great heights, allowing him to enjoy a level of reputation that other artists only reach posthumously. As such, King has parlayed this fame into being a sort of media guru of sorts; while he's not and has never passed himself off as what we know to be an influencer today, he's regularly offered his opinions and suggestions on the art he enjoys almost as an offshoot of the nonfiction he's...

This article contains massive spoilers for "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice." Don't say it a third time!
If there ever was a filmmaker who wasn't afraid to let his freak flag fly, it's Tim Burton. Years before the likes of Clive Barker, Guillermo del Toro, Edgar Wright, and other horror geeks began making films, Burton was infusing all of his short films and subsequent feature films with homages to all manner of horror film ephemera. Even though Burton has expanded and experimented with his personal aesthetic over the course of his career, he's never lost his horror nerd credentials. His latest film, "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice," is further proof of this, as it's saturated with all manner of esoteric elements, and not just ones involving horror films, either: Burton is also a big fan of alternative music and nostalgic kitsch.

Before "Salem's Lot" returned to the zeitgeist with a highly-anticipated reboot movie, the Stephen King classic was a miniseries that shook the world. Directed by "Texas Chain Saw Massacre" mastermind Tobe Hooper, the two-part 1979 series was event TV at its spookiest.
The original "Salem's Lot" limited series has never been among the best King adaptations out there, but it holds a unique place in pop culture history thanks to its status as one of the earliest on-screen takes on a King book — plus some truly frightening moments. Several members of the show's sprawling ensemble cast, including David Soul, James Mason, Lance Kerwin, and vamp actor Reggie Nalder, have passed away in the decades since "Salem's Lot" first beamed its way into our collective consciousness. Of the actors who are still with us, several have gone on to award-winning careers in film and television, while others retired or found fulfillment in other careers.

Prior to "Gilligan's Island," actor Natalie Schafer had a massive career on stage and screen. She made her Broadway debut in the play "Trigger" in 1927 and would appear regularly on stage throughout the '20s and '30s. She made her feature film debut in 1941 in the invisible man comedy "The Body Disappears" and continued to act in movies throughout the '40s. Schafer added TV acting to her resume starting in 1948. Appearing in most of the hit variety shows of the 1950s, she was a reliable comedienne of the first order, showing up in "77 Sunset Strip," "Mannix," and "The Beverly Hillbillies." Schafer, it seemed, never stopped working.
When Shafer was 64, she was offered the role of Lovey Howell, the millionaire, on Sherwood Schwartz's sitcom "Gilligan's Island." Despite decades of work, "Gilligan's Island" would become the feather in Schafer's cap -- the show she would become best known for.

Alexandra O. Philippe’s Chain Reactions is an extraordinary documentary about an extraordinary film. With contributions from comedian Patton Oswalt, writers Alexandra Heller-Nicholas and Stephen King, plus filmmakers Takashi Miike and Karyn Kusama, it examines the legacy of Tobe Hooper’s 1974 shocker The Texas Chain Saw Massacre through a series of very personal and revealing interviews. Written by Hooper and Kim Henkel, two Texas students, the original film finds five teenagers coming unstuck when a road trip takes them to the Sawyer house, the bone-strewn home to chainsaw-wielding maniac Leatherface (so named for horrifically obvious reasons) and his inbred cannibal family.
Philippe’s thoughtful, reflexive style has developed a lot since his breakout film The People vs. George Lucas (2010), a meditation on Star Wars fandom. In 2017 he released 78/52, an intensive study of the shower scene in Psycho, which he followed in 2019 with Memory: The Origins of Alien, a deep...

“The film which you are about to see is an account of the tragedy which befell a group of five youths, in particular Sally Hardesty and her invalid brother, Franklin. It is all the more tragic in that they were young. But, had they lived very, very long lives, they could not have expected, nor would they have wished to see as much of the mad and macabre as they were to see that day. For them an idyllic summer afternoon drive became a nightmare. The events of that day were to lead to the discovery of one of the most bizarre crimes in the annals of American history, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre.” When I joke about movies being very loosely based on a true story, that opening dialogue from John Larroquette and the wild popularity is what I’m referring to. While it may not be the first...

Tobe Hooper's 1985 sci-fi vampire film "Lifeforce" is one of the stranger genre exercises of its era. It was produced by the Cannon Group, an exploitation movie house founded in Israel by B-movie luminaries Menahem Golan and Yoram Globus, so it comes with a schlocky imprimatur right out of the gate. "Lifeforce" also has plenty of traditionally schlocky elements, including space vampires, amazing monster effects (it has one of the best practical living corpses in film history), and extensive nudity. The first detail many may remember from "Lifeforce" is the vision of actor Mathilda May wandering around a space laboratory without a stitch of clothing.
The rules of the space vampires in "Lifeforce" aren't entirely clear, as Texan director Hooper was more interested in a sense of dread than plot clarity. It seems that the space vampires can not only shape-shift, but also subsist by "drinking" lightning-light energy out of the faces of their victims.

Frank Darabont's 1994 prison drama "The Shawshank Redemption," based on a novella by Stephen King, experienced a type of slow success that films don't seem capable of achieving anymore. Released in theaters in late September, "Shawshank" didn't open to huge numbers, and it didn't cause much of a stir in the culture. Reviews were generally quite positive, with many critics praising the film's central performances from Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman, and others liking the tenderness of the screenplay. The film currently boasts an 89% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
The film was ultimately nominated for seven Academy Awards, but it won zero, crowded out in a year that included "Forrest Gump," "Pulp Fiction," "Quiz Show," and Krzysztof Kieślowski's "Red." It wasn't until "Shawshank" was released on VHS that it began to find an audience. Indeed, audiences grew by leaps and bounds, with some coming to consider it one of...

Earlier this week, we got our first official look at Warner Bros. and New Line's upcoming re-adaptation of Stephen King's Salem's Lot, which is coming to the Max streaming service this October.
Now, Max has shared another batch of stills, this time featuring our first glimpse of Pilou Asbæk as the evil Richard Straker, and what might well be the hand of Kurt Barlow (the actor playing him is still a mystery) as he clutches Father Callahan (John Benjamin Hickey) by the jaw.
In King's novel, Straker is an older man who is introduced as the servant/familiar of head vampire Kurt Barlow. In the '70s TV movie directed by The Texas Chainsaw Massacre's Tobe Hooper, the character was played by the legendary James Mason and depicted as a near-invulnerable supernatural being.

Sabrina Carpenter is back with another music video folks can’t stop talking about, and this time, she’s joined by “Wednesday” and “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” star Jenna Ortega. Fittingly, the video is full of horror, camp and cult classic movie references — and we’ve put together a handy list to guide you through them.
1. “Death Becomes Her”
This is the most overt reference and it runs throughout the video, as “Taste” has a few references to Goldie Hawn and Meryl Streep’s 1992 dark comedy. Most obviously, the core conceit of two unkillable women fighting to the would-be death over one man, as well as the iconic costuming.
There’s also the whole shotgun sequence, which heavily tips its hat to “Death Becomes Her,” right down to the hole left in Carpenter’s torso — a parallel to Goldie Hawn’s unforgettable “I have a hole in my stomach” scene — and the shot peering right through it.
