The "Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "Cause and Effect" opens with the Enterprise-d facing a catastrophe. The episode fades up, and the ship is already severely damaged. Casualty reports are coming in! Everything is failing! We are venting drive plasma! All hands to emergency escape pods! We are losing antimatter containment! Core breach is imminent! Just as Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart) gives the command to abandon ship, the ship explodes, killing everyone on board. Then the opening credits roll. It's perhaps the most eye-grabbing start to any episode of "Star Trek."
As the episode progresses, though, viewers soon get to know the gist of the episode. The first act sees the Enterprise restored, sailing merrily through space as if nothing happened. At the end of the first act, the ship collides with another starship that seeming appeared out of nowhere. The disaster happens a second time, and audiences see...

The third and final season of "Star Trek: Picard" ended on a friendly note. Jean-Luc (Patrick Stewart) had rescued his long-lost son Jack (Ed Speleers) from the Borg, and had finally earned a moment with his old co-workers from the Enterprise-d. He hadn't served with them for decades, but he was still close to his old senior staff. He, Riker (Jonathan Frakes), Deanna Troi (Marina Sirtis), Worf (Michael Dorn), Geordi (LeVar Burton), Dr. Crusher (Gates McFadden), and a new fleshy version of Data (Brent Spiner) gathered around a poker table for one final, genial game together. They chatted idly and laughed as friends as the credits began to roll.
It was implied that the characters would live out the rest of their lives on good terms. Picard was about 100 years old in that third season, so his story may very well be over. He had another adventure, just as he...

LeVar Burton shared his thoughts on the late John Amos during an appearance on ABC’s The View today, praising his Roots costar – they played the enslaved person Kunta Kinte at different points in the character’s life – for his groundbreaking TV portrayal on Good Times.
“James Evans, the character that John played on Good Times, was the first Black man as householder on TV,” Burton said. “The whole family, the father making it work for the family. When I was coming up Black men were generally portrayed as absent fathers, shiftless, fodder for prison and criminals. And John Amos changed that. May his name forever be blessed.”
“And it will,” responded View moderator Whoopi Goldberg.
Amos died August 21 at the age of 84. His death was announced on October 1 by his son Kelly Christopher Amos. According to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s office, Amos died of congestive heart failure.

With all due respect to Coming to America’s Cleo McDowell — owner of an off-brand McDonald’s featuring a logo with golden arcs, not arches, and a Big Mick burger, not a Big Mac — John Amos’ two most iconic roles came more than a decade prior, in the Seventies. In 1974, CBS debuted Good Times, where Amos and Esther Rolle played James and Florida Evans, parents struggling to keep their kids’ heads above water in a Chicago housing project. After he was fired from the show for complaining that James and Florida...

If you're even a little bit familiar with "The Big Bang Theory," you know that it's always been sold as a "show about nerds" — so it makes sense that it featured a whole bunch of actors who also appeared in the "Star Trek" franchise.
Chuck Lorre's hit sitcom, which ran for 12 seasons and stars Jim Parsons, Johnny Galecki, Simon Helberg, Kunal Nayyar, Kaley Cuoco, Melissa Rauch, and Mayim Bialik — who play Sheldon Cooper, Leonard Hofstadter, Howard Wolowitz, Raj Koothrappali, Penny Hofstadter, Bernadette Rostenkowski-Wolowitz, and Amy Farrah Fowler, respectively — featured many, many cameos from pop culture icons, including the late James Earl Jones, Stephen Hawking, and even Marvel Comics legend Stan Lee. Throughout those 12 seasons, a lot of "Star Trek" veterans also showed up in cameo roles. So, who were they, and what did these "Star Trek" actors do during their appearances on "The Big Bang Theory?"

1980s nostalgia is out and 1990s nostalgia is in, with the horror genre doling out films like I Saw the TV Glow (review) and now Mr. Crocket, an adaptation of Brandon Espy’s 2022 short of the same name (itself a part of Hulu’s Bite Size Halloween series). Espy’s feature debut sadly sees the filmmaker struggling to find inspiration, working with a pedestrian script despite some impressive gore effects and puppetry.

"The Big Bang Theory" was never a critics' darling, to the extent that reviewers were a bit stunned when they found themselves gradually won over by "Young Sheldon," but both series were massive Nielsen ratings hits that managed to attract loads of big-name guest stars. The former earned its nerd bona fides by landing appearances from "Star Trek" legends like Leonard Nimoy and LeVar Burton, while touching television immortality by casting sitcom god Bob Newhart as Professor Proton. As for "Young Sheldon," the producers happily welcomed Newhart back as the TV science host, and also brought on notable talents like Melanie Lynskey, Jason Alexander, and Lance Reddick.
So no matter how you feel about these ultra-mainstream shows, you've got to accept that there is no shame in playing the cameo game within "The Big Bang Theory" universe.

Widely considered to be one of the best episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation's third season, "Yesterday's Enteprise" brought back Lt. Tasha Yar who'd been killed near the end of season one because Denise Crosby wanted to leave the series. Many fans thought she deserved a more noble death, and that's what this episode gave her.
Tasha Yar is alive and well aboard the Enterprise-c when it meets up with the Enterprise-d due to a rift in space time. On one side of the rift, there's a bloody Klingon War going on, and the end result of the episodes forces the out of time Enterprise to return through the rift which results in the deaths of all aboard, including Yar. The only person aboard the Enterprise-d to remember what actually happened was Guinan [Whoopi Goldberg], who then asked Geordi La Forge [LeVar Burton] to tell her more about Yar.

One of the more hopeful aspects of the notoriously optimistic "Star Trek" is that in the future, all disabilities will be readily and easily accommodated. While one might argue that the miracle technologies at hand in "Star Trek" might be able to undo any and all disabilities, employing them would raise sticky moral issues for the audience. How many disabilities would the writers of "Star Trek" be "correcting" before the show starts to reek of eugenics?
Instead, anyone with a disability is merely given an appliance or prosthesis that allows them to work in Starfleet without anyone making an issue of it. Case in point: Geordi La Forge, the engineer played by LeVar Burton on "Star Trek: The Next Generation," was born blind, lacking irises or pupils. In order to see, Geordi wears an over-the-eyes appliance called a Visor that hooks onto small implanted neural sensors located at his temples.

In the eyes of Trekkies, "Star Trek: The Next Generation" may be the greatest TV series of all time. No other show -- not "The Sopranos," not "M*A*S*H," not "Manimal" -- has come close to the high quality and rich premise of the adventures of the Enterprise-d in the 24th century. Famously, creator Gene Roddenberry took core concepts from his 1966 "Star Trek" series and enhanced them for "The Next Generation," creating an even more aggressively utopian world that was even more forthright about its anticapitalist, anticolonialist intentions. He even instigated a rule among the show's writers that no two characters were allowed to bicker, and no stories could stem from interpersonal conflicts. In Roddenberry's vision, everyone got along at all times.
Writers, naturally hated this idea, as they felt conflict is the best way to create drama. For the first two seasons, Roddenberry, writers, and lawyers all butted heads over the series.

The resonant baritone of James Earl Jones – the Emmy Award-, Grammy Award-, and Tony Award-winning actor who also received an honorary Oscar, making him a non-competitive Egot designee – has gone silent. At age 93, the actor, best known for voicing the evil Darth Vader in the original “Star Wars” trilogy and later the regal Mufasa in “The Lion King,” began his career on stage, in productions of “Othello” and the boxing biography “The Great White Hope.” The latter won him his first of three Tonys, as well as an Academy Award nomination for the film version in 1970.
His other notable work over the years included “Dr. Strangelove,” “The Hunt for Red October” (and its sequels), “Conan the Barbarian,” John Sayles’s labor struggle drama “Matewan,” the Broadway production of August Wilson’s “Fences,” the uneasy racial comedy “Soul Man,” and the South Africa-set “Cry, the Beloved Country.” He was also a...

"Star Trek: The Next Generation" debuted on September 28, 1987 to much ballyhoo. A new version of "Star Trek," set a century after the events of the original "Star Trek"? With an all-new U.S.S. Enterprise and an all-new crew? Trekkies were excited, cautiously optimistic that the new show would be a hit. After a few rocky seasons, it was, and "Star Trek: The Next Generation" became a ratings bonanza. Also, while the first "Star Trek" only lasted three seasons, and the 1973 "Star Trek" animated series only lasted two, "Next Generation" would continue for seven year, racking up an impressive 176 episodes. Or 178, if you count the two-hour debut and finale episodes as two episodes each.

There are 178 episodes of "Star Trek: The Next Generation," and any devoted Trekkie has likely seen them all. True obsessives, however, probably don't consider the series complete unless they include an episode of "Reading Rainbow" called "The Bionic Bunny Show". "Reading Rainbow," for those unlucky enough not to know about it, was a PBS series for kids, hosted by LeVar Burton, that encouraged kids to read. Burton and others would read picture books to the audience, spur on children to go to their local libraries, and regularly host educational segments. "Reading Rainbow" premiered in 1983 and ran regularly for years, sometimes taking extended breaks, through to 2006. Kids who found the series loved it. They also loved that Burton, so friendly on screen, encouraged them to read. Burton won multiple Emmys for the show, including a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2022.

The Black List, the company behind the annual list of best unproduced screenplays, is expanding into fiction, launching initiatives focusing on unpublished manuscripts, the company announced on Wednesday.
Writers will have the opportunity to showcase completed novels on the website, pay for feedback from the organization’s readers and submit manuscripts to various fiction programs. The former director of writing programs at the Center for Fiction Randy Winston will oversee the organization’s expansion into fiction.
The Black List noted that the goal of the initiative is to bridge the gap between early-career writers and the publishing arena.
Black List founder and CEO Franklin Leonard told the New York Times in an interview that the lack of visibility “has really negative consequences for the writers who are trying to get their work to somebody who can do something with it, but also for the publishing industry itself, because it’s...

The Black List – the company behind the annual list of Hollywood’s best unproduced screenplays — is expanding into fiction, launching several initiatives focused on unpublished manuscripts. In today’s announcement, The Black List said the goal of the expansion is to bridge the gap between early-career writers and the established publishing industry.
Black List founder and CEO Franklin Leonard said of the new efforts, “Expanding into fiction is a natural progression. Right now, there are brilliant writers around the world who don’t have access to high-quality, accountable feedback, and whose work goes unseen for reasons entirely unrelated to how good it is. That’s a massive market failure, and it changes today.”
Similar to The Black List offering professional feedback on unproduced screenplays, writers can now submit novels for paid feedback from the company’s readers, as well as create a free profile that showcases their completed works.

Pure Fiction: The Black List Offers New Novelists A New Avenue To Publication, TV & Film Adaptations
Over three months before the 20th edition of The Black List hits inboxes all over town, the Franklin Leonard founded platform is broadening its horizon into novels.
“The Black List’s core mission has always been discovering, supporting, and amplifying exceptional writing–providing it with the platform and visibility that it deserves based on its merit,” said Leonard today of the move into fiction with manuscript submissions and connections to the world of adaptation for TV and film. “Expanding into fiction is a natural progression.

ABC has shared its first promo for this year’s 76th Emmys, hosted by Dan Levy and Eugene Levy — and for the spot they’re going high-brow — er, eyebrow. Yep, it’s probably appropriate that the first father-son Emmy hosting duo kick things off with a dad joke.
In the spot, Dan warns his dad not to aim for a low-hanging eyebrows gag. But Eugene can’t resist. The promo was released on Tuesday night during ABC’s primetime lineup — which included “The Bachelorette” season finale. And the ad also comes as the Television Academy kicks the month of Emmy Awards into high gear, with the Creative Arts Emmys this weekend, Sept. 7 and Sept. 8, at the Peacock Theatre in downtown LA.

At the end of the third season of "Star Trek: Voyager," ratings were flagging and Paramount was concerned. The show was competent enough, but it simply wasn't drawing the numbers that "Star Trek: The Next Generation" did before it. To shake up the series, the writers ejected the gentle character of Kes (Jennifer Lien) and replaced her with Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan), a Borg babe in a skintight catsuit. The show's writers loved Seven of Nine, and the series was restructured to be almost entirely about her. It also didn't hurt that Ryan looked like a magazine cover model and was cinched up in a bust-enhancing corset. Ratings, needless to say, went up.
It's reported in the oral history book "The Fifty-Year Mission: The Next 25 Years: From The Next Generation to J. J. Abrams," edited by Mark A. Altman and Edward Gross, that the cast of "Voyager" initially resented Ryan,...

It should be stated right up front that the below list is not meant to be taken as a commentary on the strength of certain characters, the talents of the actors playing them, or the quality of the show from which they hail. Indeed, most of them come from legitimately great TV shows and/or are played by very talented people. Some of them may even be among the greatest characters in "Star Trek," and I do not mean to suggest, even for a moment, that they should be removed from the franchise or altered in any way.
Except for their names. "Star Trek" is full of futuristic aliens and evolved humans that need to be named by modern-day screenwriters, and, well, sometimes those screenwriters come up with some pretty silly ideas. It's natural now to accept Brent Spiner's android character from "Star Trek: The Next Generation," but it...

The fourth and final season of the CW’s Superman & Lois will debut sooner than expected. The CW has made a change on the network’s fall schedule, with Superman & Lois and new wild west unscripted series The Wranglers moving from Thursday to Monday, swapping nights with the upcoming game shows Scrabble and Trivial Pursuit, which had originally been slated for Mondays.
The move is believed to be in response to ABC creating a 8 Pm – 10 Pm game show block on Mondays with Celebrity Wheel Of Fortune and Press Your Luck which would’ve gone head-to-head with the CW’s game shows. With Tuesdays and Fridays spoken for with the live WWE Nxt and Inside The NFL, the network didn’t have many nights to work with.
With the change, the CW series also are getting new, earlier premiere dates.

Patrick Stewart has played two pop cultural icons in his career. While he is known to a generation as Professor X in the X-Men films, he had his breakthrough as Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation. The show made him a global star along with the rest of its cast.
However, according to co-star Brent Spiner, the show was considered seriously by audiences only when one star joined the cast. Spiner mentioned that though the series had a slow start in the first season, it gained traction when Oscar-winning actor Whoopi Goldberg joined the show as Guinan.

Imagine a world where Sheldon Cooper’s quirks were even more controversial, and you’d be looking at 2024’s baffling TV landscape. The Big Bang Theory’s decision to embrace Sheldon’s eccentricities was groundbreaking—yet divisive. Sheldon’s neurotic habits, unconventional logic, and social faux pas pushed boundaries in the 2000s, stirring up debates that even the show’s cast couldn’t ignore.

For 10 seasons and 106 episodes, Dr. Henry Louis Gates, Jr. has been helping people explore their family history on “Finding Your Roots With Henry Louis Gates, Jr.,” the PBS series that has delved into the often tangled family trees of almost 250 people. The program is the only PBS series to have experienced a growth in linear ratings over the last three years, it’s the network’s top-rated regularly scheduled program — and now, for Season 10, it is finally an Emmy nominee in the Outstanding Hosted Nonfiction Series or Special category.
“I am deeply humbled by the nomination, and I never dreamed we would get it,” said Gates, a Harvard professor of African American Studies who co-created the show and has hosted it for its entire run. He got the news in a hotel room in Las Vegas, where he’d gone to receive the Spingarn Medal, the NAACP’s highest honor for achievements by Black Americans.

One of the most endearing characters of Star Trek: The Next Generation was Brent Spiner’s Data. The android’s journey from being curious about humanity and emotions to almost becoming one while working together with the USS Enterprise crew was one of the most satisfying arcs for a character.
Though Data was largely emotionless, he became a canvas on which many other variations could be put on and Brent Spiner did a phenomenal job at it. A director reportedly once told him that playing an emotionless character for many seasons would be tedious. Still, Spiner seemed to envision Data being more than an android.

Only in 1994, for its final season, the sci-fi show was nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series.

Throughout "Star Trek: The Next Generation," the character of Geordi La Forge (LeVar Burton) wore a visor across his eyes. Geordi was blind and the visor allowed him to see. To briefly explain its operation, the visor was attached to Geordi's face at his temples, where he had small mechanical implants that reached directly into the visual cortex of his brain. The visor would pick up a wide range of optical information, mostly based on thermal patterns, and fed it directly into Geordi's brain, bypassing his eyes. It allowed Geordi to see.
Burton had to wear the visor on set every workday for seven years, and continued to wear it in the 1994 film "Star Trek Generations." Many appreciated that "Star Trek" featured a visually impaired character, but moreso that Geordi's blindness was never an issue or a plot point. His disability was incidental, and that was great.

The spinoff show Star Trek: Deep Space Nine seems to have gone The Simpsons’ route this election season and predicted a political policy back in 1995, that might come into effect in California now. Moreover, the episode in question was also reportedly set in 2024, making the prediction all the more eerie and accurate.
The episode ‘Past Tense’ sees the world in 2024 crumbling due to rising homelessness, which is attempted to be eradicated by the politicians by sending the homeless to encampments known as Sanctuaries. This ideology has been compared to Californian Governor Gavin Newsom’s latest policy on homelessness eradication.

LeVar Burton is best known for his role in the global phenomenon Star Trek: The Next Generation. Sharing screen space with actors like Patrick Stewart and Brent Spiner, Burton played the role of the chief engineer Geordie La Forge. The show was the beginning of a long-standing relationship with the franchise which has lasted decades.
While Burton starred in the spinoff show, he was reportedly a huge Trekkie and worshipped creator Gene Roddenberry for depicting a hopeful future. Hence, when he was selected to play the role, he had only one question before signing the contract which involved Roddenberry.

Time is flying faster than Rhaenys fell to her death this season on “House of the Dragon,” which is to say, wow, somehow the Season 2 finale of the “Game of Thrones” spin-off is already upon us.
Despite multiple clips leaking on social media earlier this week after what HBO referred to as an “unintentional release from an international third-party distributor,” the finale (airing Sunday at 9/8 on HBO and Max) is still the most anticipated watch of the weekend that isn’t related to the Summer Olympics. In the penultimate episode, Emma D’Arcy’s Queen Rhaenyra was last seen gathering an unconventional group of dragonriders — including a blacksmith and a drunk — to set the stage for the finale’s major conflict with Aemond (Ewan Mitchell), who fled to King’s Landing when he saw Rhaenyra’s growing forces. If you’ve read the source material, you likely know how this will end.

Richardson, Hardwick and Rohl were joined by director Olatunde Osunsanmi and executive producer Alex Kurtzman to talk about the franchise’s upcoming interstellar venture.
A spin-off from the series “Star Trek: Discovery,” the film follows Philippa Georgiou (Yeoh) as she works with Section 31, a secret division of Starfleet tasked with protecting the United Federation of Planets.
“The movie is a lot of things. It’s action, drama, comedy, it’s equal parts all of that,” said Richardson, who plays a Quasi, a shapeshifting chameloid. “So, it’s not just up to Quasi to be funny, everybody’s funny in it, and everybody’s serious and the stakes are there for everybody.

Actor Brent Spiner is best known for his role as Data in Star Trek: The Next Generation. The actor played the role of the loveable android for seven seasons and four films before being killed off temporarily in the final film. He then returned in the spinoff show Picard.
Spiner wrote a memoir about his experiences as a Star Trek celebrity with the audiobook containing cameos by Patrick Stewart and other members of the Tng cast. While Spiner claimed that many of the events of the memoir were fabricated or enhanced to entertain, one incident regarding LeVar Burton’s wife is particularly harrowing.
