How ‘The Crow’s Wings Got Clipped At The Box Office: Reboot Of Brandon Lee Cult Pic Bombs With $4.6M
After 16 years of fits and starts, a $50M reboot of 1994 goth thriller The Crow finally flew into theaters and dropped out of the sky with a disastrous $4.6M opening.
Forget about critics plucking the feathers from The Crow at 19%, those moviegoers who attended Thursday night, predominantly fans, slammed the movie on Comscore/Screen Engine’s PostTrak with one star, a 47% grade and a 36% definite recommend.
Lionsgate limited its skin in the game with a $10M North American acquisition and $15M P&a on this Rupert Sanders-directed take, starring burgeoning It and John Wick: Chapter 4 genre star Bill Skarsgård. At the end of the day, the studio stands to lose more — in the neighborhood of $30M — on its $110M-plus feature take of gonzo sci-fi video game Borderlands.
So why make a big deal here on The Crow? Even if, let’s say, Lionsgate possibly breaks even in pic’s...

You can’t keep “The Crow” down. That’s kind of its whole thing. Naturally, the concept of the wronged dead who return from their grave seeking vengeance — inspired by James O’Barr’s comics of the same name — has sprung forth a franchise, which spans five total films since Alex Proyas’ iconic, stylish film debuted in 1994. The original film remains a heartbreaking watch after the tragic on-set death of star Brandon Lee, but it also holds up as a stunning, massively influential goth rock urban fantasy — not to mention an early comic book adaptation.
The rest of the “The Crow” movies? Well, they’re not quite so enduring, despite a steady stream of familiar faces in the casts, including Kirsten Dunst, Edward Furlong, Mia Kirschner, Fred Ward, David Boreanaz and now, Bill Skarsgard and FKA Twigs in the long-awaited remake.

The first issue of James O'Barr's comic book "The Crow" was initially published in February 1989, and it joined the ranks of a growing contingent of broody, Goth-friendly comics that spoke to a growing cultural obsession with death and angst. The story of "The Crow" is incredibly bleak. A young man named Eric and his fiancée Shelley are attacked in an alleyway by a random group of thugs. Eric is shot in the head and left paralyzed, while Shelley is assaulted, beaten, and murdered. Eric later succumbs to his wounds and dies at the hospital.
An invisible mystical crow, however, finds Eric's soul in the afterlife a year later, and returns it to his body, resurrecting him. Eric is more or less a zombie and can be wounded without dying. He also becomes an introspective poet, often quoting Rimbeau and even Joy Division lyrics. He instantly became the poster boy for broody Goths everywhere,...

You might as well call the 2000s the decade of the parodies. You had hilariously funny parodies such as the Scary movie series, Date Movie, Epic Movie, Meet the Spartans, Superhero Movie and Tropic Thunder all come out during this time period. On January 18, 2004, Showtime made history with “The L Word”: a spaghetti-strapped melodrama about twiggy lesbians living against a golden-filtered backdrop of mid-aughts Los Angeles.
The stroke of entertainment genius from creator/executive producer Ilene Chaiken premiered that Sunday night in two parts, introducing a revolutionary cast of LGBTQ characters who would change the face and ritual of lesbian pop culture forever. From the moment Jenny (Mia Kirshner) laid eyes on Marina (Karina Lombard)…even before Bette (Jennifer Beals) and Tina (Laurel Holloman) tried to steal that dude’s sperm…or Shane (Katherine Moennig) showed up wearing that leather vest….countless TV-loving shes, theys, and gays saw themselves reflected in a fizzy fictional universe that was finally, mercifully grounded in a semi-authentic lesbian reality.
Fast forward to 2019; the reboot happened. Showtime’s “The L Word: Generation Q” served as both a revamp of the initial concept with new characters and...

CAA and Disney are fighting back against Julia Ormond’s claim that they acted as enablers for Harvey Weinstein and failed to protect her from being sexually assaulted.
Ormond rose to fame in the mid-90s, appearing in “Legends of the Fall” and “Sabrina.” She has alleged that Weinstein lured her to a business meeting in December 1995, then sexually assaulted her at her apartment in New York.
She filed suit in October, accusing Disney, which then owned Weinstein’s company, and CAA, her agency at the time, of failing to warn her of Weinstein’s history of sexual assault because he was “too important, too powerful and made them too much money.”
The companies filed motions to dismiss Ormond’s lawsuit on Tuesday, arguing they did not know about Weinstein’s sexual misconduct before the meeting.

When Julia Ormond sued CAA faulting the agency for encouraging her to take a meeting with Harvey Weinstein that eventually led to her being assaulted, the suit asked a pivotal question that may decide the case and lead to more legal action against the company depending on the answer: When did CAA’s top agents discover his history of sexual misconduct?
The answer to that question, the agency says, is not too long ago. Moving to dismiss the suit, CAA argues in a motion filed Tuesday that it learned of Weinstein’s crimes when the rest of the world did in 2017 and not before Ormond was allegedly assaulted in 1995.
“Plaintiff’s claims for negligence and breach of fiduciary duty against CAA turn on the premise that the agency allegedly knew of Weinstein’s history of sexual assault and nevertheless failed to protect her,” the filing states. “But the Complaint seeks...

CAA has been named in a lawsuit filed by Julia Ormond against Harvey Weinstein accusing her former agency and the former movie mogul’s employers at Miramax and Disney of turning a blind eye to his history of sexual assault.
Ormond, who rose to prominence in the 90s after starring in Legends of the Fall, First Knight and Sabrina, faults CAA for failing to “look out for her well-being, to not place her in danger, and to warn her about Weinstein’s predations” despite high-level agents allegedly knowing about his “propensity for sexually assaultive and exploitative behavior,” as well as “multiple confidential settlements that Weinstein reached to keep his conduct hidden from public exposure.”

Harvey Weinstein’s conviction on charges of rape in the third degree and criminal sexual acts in the first degree drew a quick reaction from entertainment industry figures on its meaning for the MeToo movement.

Weinstein was acquitted of more serious charges of predatory sexual assault, which carried the potential for life in prison.
But the Silence Breakers, a group that have come forward to allege misconduct on the part of Weinstein, issued a statement in which they said, “While it is disappointing that today’s outcome does not deliver the true, full justice that so many women deserve, Harvey Weinstein will now forever be known as a convicted serial predator.

For a certain generation of lesbians, queer women, and queers with vulvas who don’t identify as women, “The L Word” was — to put it mildly — the most personally significant piece of pop culture of the last 20 years. Speaking solely for myself (I fall into the latter camp), discovering the comic melodrama about a group of attractive lesbians living in Los Angeles in the mid-aughts was a revelation. I can still remember driving back from my local video store, cradling the DVDs in my lap like a precious gem, my semi-clueless father innocently inquiring: “So, what is the L word?,” emphasizing the last word in the title much in the way he still says “Burger King.” Graciously filling in my loaded silence, just as he would the following year when he lobbed me the Bill Clinton answer about my marijuana use, he asked — “Is it…love?”

Grab your Rosé and pumpkin-spiced crappaccinos, lovelies. Lifetime had The College Admissions Scandal plotted and cast by the time Aunt Becky perp-walked into the courthouse smiling and signing autographs.

Instead, we got Caroline and Bethany -- two successful and overbearing momsters -- who were caught up in Operation Varsity Blues.

For the first time in this “new location”, I realized the distance between the old and new sites is quite close and that Tiff’s spreading throughout the city, like the Berlinale does, could be a very cool idea.

If your first thought when the college admissions scandal first broke was, “This seems like exactly the type of material that would benefit from an even-handed documentary shedding light on the evils of the Ivy League industrial complex and an educational system that prioritizes wealth and privilege over individual character and merit,” then you’re about to be sorely disappointed, sis, because that movie has not happened! However, if your first thought was, “Wow, what a mess, I can’t wait to see the Jewish best friend from Adventures in Babysitting...

Who is Amanda Grayson? Everything you definitely don’t know about Spock and Michael Burnham’s mom in Star Trek.
Warning: This Star Trek: Discovery articles contains spoilers for Season 2, Episode 7: “Light and Shadows.”
In Star Trek: Discovery, we’ve gotten to know the character of Amanda Grayson a whole lot better than we ever did in either The Original Series or any of the films. Famously introduced in 1967 episode “Journey to Babel,” Amanda (as played by Jane Wyatt) was seemingly just as steady and smart as her husband Sarek and her son Spock.
In Discovery, we’re learning exactly why Amanda is so badass, and also, why she’s a great mom. Mia Kirshner’s version of Amanda is giving new dimension to the character, but to be, fair, the depth of Amanda has been there since the beginning, and, in some cases, lurking in...

Despite all the fanfare surrounding his role in the CBS All Access show’s sophomore run, Star Trek: Discovery season 2 has yet to give us Ethan Peck’s on-screen debut as Spock. In episode 7, titled “Light and Shadows,” however, the search for Spock will continue as his adoptive sister Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) returns to Vulcan to meet with her parents, Sarek (James Frain) and Amanda Grayson (Mia Kirshner).
Sarek and Amanda have been recurring presences throughout the past two seasons, with the Vulcan ambassador and his human wife last appearing in season 2 episode 1 and episode 3, respectively. We don’t know if the visit home helps Burnham get any closer to finding her brother, but it sounds like she’ll uncover some other revelations in the process.

Hundreds of women and men gathered in downtown Toronto on Saturday to protest the lack of opportunities for female filmmakers and to call on the entertainment industry to support a wider range of voices in the movies and shows it makes.
The event, dubbed the “Share Her Journey Rally,” is taking place at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival and drew a range of speakers. Actresses Geena Davis and Mia Kirshner; directors Nandita Das and Amma Asante; and academics such as Dr. Stacy L. Smith shared a mixture of personal stories and bleak statistics that demonstrated the barriers that women and particularly women of color face in an industry that is dominated by white men. Only 4% of directors across the 1,100 top films from 2007 to 2017 were female. Those numbers become even starker when they are broken down by race — only four of those films were from black female filmmakers, two were from Asian female filmmakers,...
