According to late “The Wizard of Oz” icon Judy Garland’s daughter Lorna Luft, “Wicked” is defying filmmaking gravity.

Luft, who is the daughter of Garland and Sidney Luft and half-sister of Liza Minnelli, took to social media to praise the musical prequel adaptation. Luft especially applauded director Jon M. Kids of the 70s will always have Jaws as an introduction to horror and that movie is still a great way to introduce newer generations to the genre after almost 50 years. Jon M. Chu’s Wicked Part One is set to defy gravity when it comes to theaters just ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday. The first part of the musical film adaptation will compete against Ridley Scott’s Gladiator II, which arrives in theaters on the same date for a combination much like the summer of 2023’s Barbenheimer.

Those hoping to stream Wicked Part One versus seeing it in the theater may have to wait a bit before the film arrives on streaming services as it will have an exclusive theatrical run at the end of this year.

When does Wicked Part One come out in theaters?

The first half of the duology hits theaters on Friday, Nov. 22 alongside Gladiator II for the phenomenon some are calling Glicked. The film was originally slated to go up against Moana 2 a week later.

Cynthia Erivo can relate to “Elvis” actor Austin Butler and “Armand” actress Renate Reinsve: It turns out throwing yourself fully into a performance could leave you bed-ridden.

Erivo said during the “Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” that even just auditioning for musical adaptation “Wicked” left her ill. The audition was three hours long, and Tony winner Erivo had to recoup after it.

“Oh, I was very ill by the end of it,” Erivo said. “I was in bed for the next week, for like four days, with 104 fever.”

As early as the 2024 Academy Awards in February, Grande, who will portray the Good Witch Glinda, and Erivo, who will portray Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, committed to wearing pink and green, respectively, or sometimes swapping colors or switching them out for others still close to character and the film. At the end of her chat with host Jimmy Fallon, Erivo shared a never-before-seen clip from the movie teasing her performance of beloved music number “The Wizard and I.”

Chu's long-awaited film version of the beloved musical, has released a ton of merchandise and toys from companies like The Noble Collection, Lego, and Mattel, but the latter has made a huge blunder on packaging for two dolls featuring the likenesses of Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande.

On the back of boxes for Elphaba and Glinda dolls, there's a website URL for Wicked.com. The issue is, the movie's actual website is WickedMovie.com...and Wicked.com just so happens to be a pornographic website.

"Established in Canoga Park, California on March 1st, 1993, Wicked Pictures was formed with a firm commitment to producing quality parody porn movies, a decision the company has stayed true [to] since its beginning," reads the description on that site (the content there is Nsfw so visit at your own risk).

“Mattel was made aware of a misprint on the packaging of the Mattel Wicked collection dolls, primarily sold in the U.S., which intended to direct consumers to the official WickedMovie.

The packaging for Mattel’s Wicked dolls mistakenly lists the URL of an adult entertainment site instead of the official domain for the film.

Wicked, the new theatrical adaptation of the hit Broadway musical, is set to open in theaters worldwide on November 22nd. However, merchandise for the film, starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo as the witches Glinda and Elphaba, is already on sale, and some fans have spotted a major error on the packaging for Mattel’s dolls for the film.

The back of the Mattel dolls’ packaging lists the website wicked.com. The issue? That domain belongs to an adult entertainment site, not the film’s official website, which is actually wickedmovie.com.

It doesn’t seem to be a one-off error either, as hundreds of Mattel boxes listed on eBay show the same error. However, other Wicked merch, such as a Lego set, does list the correct URL on its packaging.

The cast of “Wicked,” including stars Cynthia Erivo, Ariana Grande, Jonathan Bailey and Michelle Yeoh, celebrated the Universal Pictures release’s Los Angeles premiere Saturday night at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, walking the fittingly green carpet and posing for a buzzing line of photographers along the way.

Also in attendance were the Broadway production’s original stars, Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth, the former of whom won the Tony Award 20 years ago for originated the role of Elphaba, played by Erivo in the film. Chenoweth originated the role of Glinda, played by Grande.

Longtime theater fans of the musical like Dylan Mulvaney also turned out to toast “Wicked,” as did Jennifer Lopez, “Abbott Elementary” Emmy winner Sheryl Lee Ralph, Sarah Paulson, Normani and many more.

Wicked director Jon M. Chu missed the Los Angeles premiere of his new movie — for a very good reason.

While Part 1 of his musical adaptation, a prequel to The Wizard of Oz, was having its L.A. premiere, his newborn baby girl was making her own debut into the world.

Chu and his wife, Kristin Hodge, welcomed their daughter Saturday. He posted a video of the infant on his Instagram Stories, set to Wizard of Oz tune “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” along with the caption: “I can’t believe this happened while the movie is premiering. Magic is in the air. Happy Premiere Day!! Welcome to our world, you’re gonna do great. You have a lot of witches on your side.”

This marks the fifth child for the couple, who are also parents to Willow, 7; Jonathan Heights, 5; Ruby, 3; and Iggy, 20 months.

Wicked stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande had a difficult time flying away from their characters Elphaba and Glinda.

In a recent interview with the New York Times, the two leading women discussed how their on-screen friendship has bled into real life, becoming a cornerstone for them both. That meant wrapping the two-parter shoot was difficult to reckon with.

“I was devastated,” Erivo said when asked what it felt like to finish the Jon M. Chu-helmed production, which filmed its first and second installments back-to-back, interrupted by both stars’ separate Covid diagnoses and the actors’ strike.

Grande echoed, “The whole day was a nightmare. We cried every minute, every hour. We both were in a horrible state for a few days.”

When Wicked director Jon M. Chu called up Michelle Yeoh — after the two previously collaborated on 2018’s Crazy Rich Asians — for a major role in the musical adaptation, the star admits she had a few questions.

At the film‘s Los Angeles premiere on Saturday, Yeoh remembered how Chu had asked her to read the script with an eye to play Madame Morrible, “and I at that point had no clue what he was talking about because I had not seen Wicked the musical before. I knew Wizard of Oz, who doesn’t, but not Wicked, because I hadn’t been going to the theaters and not doing what I love which is watching musicals, for quite a while I hate to say.”

Jon M. Chu’s much-anticipated and star-studded musical epic Wicked saw its Los Angeles premiere Saturday, held at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion.

In attendance were Part 1‘s main cast — in hues of iridescent pink and lush green — including powerhouse duo Ariana Grande (who portrays Glinda the Good Witch) and Cynthia Erivo (playing Elphaba), as well as Jonathan Bailey, Michelle Yeoh, Jeff Goldblum and Ethan Slater. Bowen Yang was not pictured in attendance, likely due to his commitments as a featured player on Saturday Night Live. However, one of the most notable absences was that of helmer Chu, who had a bit of a scheduling conflict as he awaited the birth of his fifth child.

Also gracing the red carpet were original Broadway cast members Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel, who originated Glinda and Elphaba’s roles onstage.

“I’m gonna say something so scary. It’s gonna scare the absolute s— out of my fans and everyone, but I love them and they’ll deal, and we’ll always be here,” she said on Bowen Yang and Matt Rogers’ Las Culturistas podcast.

“I’m always gonna make music. I’m always gonna go onstage, I’m always gonna do pop stuff, I pinky promise,” noted Grande. “But I don’t think doing it at the rate I’ve been doing it for the past 10 years is where I see the next 10 years.

“I just feel like this experience was such a homecoming for me,” Grande said in an interview with The Streaming Service. “I feel like I came home to myself in a lot of ways, through what I learned from Glinda, from Elphaba. That was my name when I went to see the show when I was 10-years-old, and it felt like a really lovely way of honoring that. It felt really full circle, and it just felt like something I wanted to do.”
