As much as classic Doctor Who fans hate to admit it, romantic tension between the Doctor and their companions is part of the formula. Eight was a dashing lead alongside Grace Holloway, Ten and Rose’s love story has been well documented, while Fifteen’s flirtation with almost-companion Rogue has us hoping that Jonathan Groff will board the Tardis again. And heck, long-time Whovians know all about the behind-the-scenes marriage of Four and Romana II.
So it’s understandable that some fans feel a bit of disappointment about the way things ended up between Jodie Whittaker’s 13th Doctor and Yaz, her most consistent companion. Despite the clear attraction between the two, Thirteen regenerated into David Tennant’s Fourteen before they could act on their feelings.
Whittaker has a message for those longing for more pining between the Doctor and Yaz: “[N]ever say never! We’ve got adventures to do.

Personally and professionally, Sam Peckinpah was running on fumes by the time he made 1973’s Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid. Years of substance abuse left the director in such fragile health that he spent some days on the production’s Mexico locations filming from a hospital bed, and his dilapidated condition only exacerbated his notoriously combative personality and contributed to the film’s budget and schedule overruns. Infuriated by the escalating expense of the production and set on an arbitrary runtime ceiling, MGM took over editing before Peckinpah could finish the job and released a hastily assembled 106-minute version that hit theaters to indifferent reviews and middling returns. Only in 1988, four years after the director’s death, did the film gain stature as one of his finest works thanks to the release of a rough, never-finalized preview cut prepared by Peckinpah.

Warning: contains spoilers for Doctor Who episode “Empire of Death”
While ‘The Melanie Bush Mysteries’, in the form of a new novel written by Bonnie Langford, are now a Doctor Who spinoff in their own right, one is also brewing in the TV show. The in-episode commentary for “Empire of Death” hints at a big secret in the backstory of Langford’s character, the former companion and present-day Unit employee Mel Bush.
In the series 14 finale, Mel is psychically targeted by Sutekh while she’s aboard the Remembered Tardis. Sutekh whispers inside Mel’s head and boasts of being able to find the living through “time and space and family”. Watching the episode with Langford and producer Vicki Delow, that last word prompted showrunner Russell T Davies to say: “What’s that family line, then, Mel? That’s a big secret.”

Warning: contains spoilers for Doctor Who series 14 finale “Empire of Death”
That’s it now, until December. After bogeymonsters and bombs and Bridgerton balls, Doctor Who series 14 is over. The universe was saved, Sutekh has gone for good, the Susan Twist conundrum was answered, Ruby Sunday solved the mystery of her birth, and the Doctor is alone again and considering looking up his granddaughter
Between now and the arrival of Steven Moffat-scripted 2024 Christmas special “Joy to the World”, there’s plenty of time to chew over what we’ve seen, starting with any lingering questions from “Empire of Death”. Spoilers ahead.
What is the Memory Tardis?

“I think Mel’s got the best of every world, don’t you?” Bonnie Langford asks of her Doctor Who companion, who traveled with the Sixth (Colin Baker) and Seventh (Sylvester McCoy) incarnations of the Time Lord. She’s returned since, most recently in the 60th anniversary special, “The Giggle,” and now will be seen in the June 10 episode, “The Legend of Ruby Sunday.” Mel’s presence at Unit in “The Giggle” was a surprise to the Fourteenth Doctor (David Tennant) as she handed him a tablet. “I love the bit,” Langford tells TV Insider. “I love the bit where Catherine [Tate as companion Donna Noble] turned around and said, ‘I thought I was the only redhead.’ And I had to go, ‘No, I was the first,’ showing that there could be this kind of jealousy between companions. There’s almost a, ‘I was a better companion than you.’ I just love that. Because you think,...

Warning: contains spoilers for Doctor Who episode “Rogue”.
Just three episodes ago in “Boom”, the Doctor was trapped where he stood while a countdown ticked off the seconds until his death. In “Rogue”, he found himself in the same situation, but this time with the addition of a Kylie soundtrack and some excellent flirting.
Fifteen got out of the “Boom” trap by deactivating a landmine. He got out of the “Rogue” trap by properly introducing himself, both to Jonathan Groff’s bounty hunter, and to any new viewers late to this party. Rogue had mistaken the Doctor for the shape-shifting alien Chuldur he was on 19th century Earth to track down, and was seconds away from pressing the ‘incinerate’ button when the Doctor activated Rogue’s ship scanner and explained:

The one fatal mistake that most TV shows make is using TV cameos gratuitously. If the cameo doesn't mean something to the audience and the characters in the show, it's pointless, and little more than a random Stan Lee Appears gag.
On the other hand, too many shows have fallen into the trap of celebrity worship with their cameos.
Having cast members gawk and gape at their celebrity crush as if to reinforce the celebrity's prestige while doing nothing for the universe we enjoy is a waste of talent.
For this list of the top TV cameos worth celebrating, we will focus on iconic cameo appearances that gave the show some unforgettable moments that made TV history.
Seinfeld Cast, Curb Your Enthusiasm
What better way to give Seinfeld the better ending many feel it deserved than by bringing back the cast and the original set and doing a bit of self-parody?...

The Guinness World Records once listed the BBC’s Doctor Who as the “most successful Science Fiction television series in the world,” and, in November 2023, the show turned an impressive 60 years old. Doctor Who originally ran from 1963 to 1989 and was relaunched in 2005.
Despite its grand age, it’s not demonstrating any signs of slowing down.
Former showrunner Russell T Davies (fresh from his success with It’s A Sin) returns to the franchise following last year’s Christmas specials with fan-favorites David Tennant and Catherine Tate. With the 14th season — which, for the first time ever, will premiere simultaneously worldwide thanks to Disney+ (on Friday at 7 p.m.) — Ncuti Gatwa (Sex Education and Barbie) officially becomes the newest incarnation of the errant Time Lord.
But, what about those who have already played the role of The Doctor (a.k.a. Doctor Who) over the past seven decades? Below is your 101 to all of the lead actors.

For all that fans have, and will ever continue to, argue about what is canon in the world of Doctor Who, the fact remains that it is a world of fuzzy edges, edges will only get fuzzier now that Russell T Davies has introduced “the Doctor-verse”.
The TV series itself is like a piece of grit in the oyster of fandom, and around that grit has formed a pearl made of Big Finish audios and novels and comic books and tabletop Rpgs and videogames. Then there are all the unofficial appearances that definitely still count. And beyond that? The vast expanse of fan-created content, most of it created for an audience of one, and yet it is not quite as distant from The Official Version as you might think.

Next in line? Some Tom Baker magic, thanks to series 15 of Doctor Who becoming the subject of the latest set. This one runs to seven discs, dating all the way back to 1977, and includes the following stories…
Horror Of Fang Rock
The Invisible Enemy
Image Of The Fendahl
The Sun Makers
Underworld
The Invasion Of Time
Tom Baker is accompanied by Louise Jameson’s Leela in these tales, and we also get the introduction of K9 in there too. Plus, of course, Horror...

“When I was young, I was so sure of myself,” the Doctor tells Donna Noble early in the third and final Doctor Who 60th Anniversary Special. “I made a terrible mistake.” That bit of exposition catches up viewers who never got the chance to watch the lost First Doctor serial “The Celestial Toymaker,” in which Michael Gough played the Toymaker, the bad guy of “The Giggle,” now played by Neil Patrick Harris. However, it also captures the theme of the episode, in which the Toymaker’s control over reality and the weight of constant running finally catches up to the Doctor and forces him to admit how little he knows.

With meet-cutes and redemption all round, a tame baddie and a dog called Mr Jingles, this British micro-budget tale brings fresh love to tired tropes
If you’ve ever wondered what a Hallmark Christmas movie would look like if you got rid of the former Disney child stars, glossy production locations and Dolly Parton showing up at the end to sing a festive ballad, here we have an answer. This is a British micro-budget answer to holiday themed films such as Falling for Christmas, A Cozy Christmas Inn or A Christmas Cookie Catastrophe – all of which emerged in the last year.
The film-makers of this one clearly know the template like the backs of their hands, with the following Christmas romcom tropes present and correct: a wholesome but struggling business enterprise (see title), a trip back home for Christmas (see title), the magic of small communities compared with big cities...

If Doctor Who fans ever felt hard done by during any of the show’s previous big anniversaries then the 60th is here to soothe spirits, hand out cherished gifts, and generally make a bloody big hair-ruffling fuss of the lot of us.
First came news of David Tennant and Catherine Tate’s return in three anniversary specials, then came the ‘roughly 8 million episodes of Doctor Who are coming to BBC iPlayer on November 1’ announcement, then they brought back Doctor Who Confidential under a different name, and now…
…three Classic era Doctors are returning alongside eight former Doctor Who Companions (plus The Sarah Jane Adventures’ Clyde Langer) for new series Tales of the Tardis.
New Scenes, Classic Who Cast
Not a behind-the-scenes documentary, and not standalone adventures, the six-part series will pair up the stars of classic Who acting in new scenes together, in character, wrapped around episodes from six existing serials.

That tricksy Russell T Davies is at it again in the latest issue of Doctor Who Magazine, and this time the particular cat he’s set among the Whovian pigeons is the possibility of a brand-new, top-secret 60th anniversary Doctor Who celebration.

Much like the Doctor themselves, Doctor Who is a show with a long and eventful history. Various groups and individuals have attempted to track it, but no one person has the entire picture, and even in its official history there can be contradictions, rumours, and stories that grow in the retelling until they gain a truth all of their own.
It’s time to address some of the most persistent urban legends and determine just how much truth they have in them…

We first met Mel in 1986, going on time-travelling adventures first with the sixth Doctor, Colin Baker, and then his successor Sylvester McCoy in 1987. “I am absolutely thrilled to be bringing Melanie Bush back,” said Langford. “To be part of the exceptional cast, crew and production team led by the force of nature that is Russell T Davies is a career highlight. I’m so privileged and proud to have been a member of the Doctor Who family since the classic era and to be included in the new generation is phenomenal.”

Looks aren’t everything (or so our mums tell us) but when there’s a brand new Doctor in the Tardis, they become pretty important. Tradition tells us that each Doctor has their own signature style – from Tom Baker’s iconic stripey scarf to Peter Davison’s cricket-and-celery combo, and Matt Smith’s “cool” bowtie – giving us clues about what kind of Doctor they’ll be.
So what will Ncuti Gatwa’s fifteenth Doctor be like? Details are scarce so far, but his fashion-forward costumes give us plenty of interesting hints…
No More Unchanging Doctor Costume
Finally, it looks like the Doctor is going to take the occasional shower.
Past Doctors have either stuck rigidly to a single costume – like William Hartnell’s suave, Victorian-era get-up or Colin Baker’s coat of many colours – or gone for a consistent look, like David Tennant wearing the same geek-chic suit in different colours,...

Warning: contains spoilers for Doctor Who.
It’s Valentine’s Day, or thereabouts, so there’s romance flipping everywhere. We’re going to look at romance in Doctor Who as interpreted by me, a man whose wife paused tactfully for a few seconds when I told her I was writing this.
Doctor Who very rarely indulges in romance – most of the wooing happens in the theme music – but its lead is cut from similar cloth to one of literature’s most famous Romantic characters. Colin Baker reportedly hoped his Sixth Doctor would be a Mr Darcy figure, initially appearing unlikeable but softening as time went on.
This is the kind of romantic figure the Doctor most often embodies: someone who attempts to rectify mistakes (often their own) to come good at the end of the story. Mostly though this is in terms of saving planets rather than marrying Lizzy Bennet.

Big Finish has announced a mega eight-part audio drama, Once and Future, to mark the 60th anniversary of Doctor Who, reuniting an incredible seven former Doctors (so far!).
Once and Future stars the impressive line-up of Tom Baker, Peter Davison, Colin Baker, Sylvester McCoy, Paul McGann, Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant, but we’re also promised ‘dozens more’ guest stars, yet to be revealed.
As if the trio of 60th Anniversary episodes next year wasn’t enough to look forward to, this announcement also means Doctor Who fans no longer have to wait until November 2023 for the 60th Anniversary fun to start, as the Once and Future audio series will begin in May 2023. The series of hour-long specials will be released monthly, with the first seven parts materialising between May and October 2023, and a final coda in November 2024.

As first revealed back in May 2022, former "Doctor Who" star David Tennant is returning to the seminal sci-fi series alongside his former companion Catherine Tate as Donna Noble as part of the show's 60th anniversary. Whovians got their first glimpse of the returning Doctor in the recent special that marked the end of Jodie Whitaker's time in the Tardis. However, Tennant's appearance in "The Power of the Doctor" wasn't exactly under the circumstances that Whovians expected to see the Tenth Doctor again. Well, I guess it's actually the Fourteenth Doctor now!
In the episode, due to reasoning that doesn't exactly make sense, the Thirteenth Doctor is forced to regenerate into the Master. During this time, when Sacha Dhawan's mad Time Lord is in control of The Doctor's body, she meets a mysterious figure in what is essentially the Ancestral Plane. Jodie Whittaker’s final episode of Doctor Who featured surprise cameos from a number of the show’s former stars.
The Broadchurch actor bowed out as the Doctor during Sunday night’s special “The Power of the Doctor”. You can read The Independent’s review of the episode here.
In the episode, Whittaker’s Doctor faces off against her nemesis The Master (Sacha Dhawan) once again, who has brought the Daleks and Cybermen together to defeat the Doctor.
The Master makes the Doctor take part in a “forced regeneration”, in which he regenerates into her body and is able to control the Tardis.
On the brink of her own death, Whittaker finds herself in a deserted liminal space, where she is greeted by a man in black and red robes.
It is revealed to be David Bradley, representing the first Doctor William Hartnell. Bradley portrayed Hartnell, who died in 1975, in...

Warning: Contains spoilers for the latest episode of “Doctor Who”
“Can somebody tell me what the hell is going on?” says incoming “Doctor Who” star Ncuti Gatwa in a trailer for next year’s series premiere. After seeing “The Power of the Doctor,” it would be hard to find any “Who” fan who doesn’t feel the same way.
Airing on the BBC on Sunday, “The Power of the Doctor” was advertised as a sendoff for the Thirteenth Doctor, Jodie Whitaker, after four years in the role. But with the special also airing as part of the BBC’s 100th anniversary celebrations, it also was overloaded with cameos from past Doctors and companions.
As advertised, we got Sophie Aldred and Janet Fielding returning as 80s “Who” companions Ace and Tegan, but we also got cameos from four previous Doctors. Doctors No. Five through Eight — Peter Davison, Colin Baker, Sylvester McCoy...

In House of the Dragon, Matt Smith practically walks away with every scene he’s in. Only Milly Alcock really gives him a run for his money, but even then, they elevate each other’s performances rather than distracting from them.
But even so, there is something familiar about Daemon Targaryen. The mirthless laughter. The smile that only reaches just below the eyes. The way he seems mildly amused at being threatened, and enjoys nothing more than a really good nemesis. Viewers who have seen Smith as Doctor Who’s Eleventh Doctor will recognize a lot of the old notes.
This isn’t the first time he’s done this. We won’t speculate as to whether Jared Leto slept upside down, drank only human blood or tried to navigate by echolocation to prepare for his role in Morbius, but throughout the film he’s consistently outperformed by Matt Smith...

Not to complain about what is largely a fun job, but writing about what Ncuti Gatwa is going to wear as the new Doctor is really hard. Have you seen the guy? Every single photo I’ve seen of him since his casting was announced looks like a potential Doctor costume. Every single one.
Does the New Doctor Need an Unchanging Costume?
First question: do we really need a capital C Costume? And if we do, is it going to be near-permanent? There’s a difference between something obviously designed and never changed out of, and a consistent look. Compare the Eighties Doctors, who wore largely the same clothes in every story and whose costume was clearly designed to be The Doctor’s Costume.
When you have a situation where everyone wears the same clothes for a prolonged period of time it’s as much a sign of artifice as...

The announcement of a new Doctor is like Christmas for Doctor Who fans, if Christmas came every three-to-five years and appeared without warning. Immediately the Internet is awash with questions like ‘Will they be able to carry off that feeling of being centuries old but in a young body?’ (or ‘Will they be able to carry off that childlike glee and glint in the eye?’ if they’re getting on a bit), ‘Can they say “reverse the polarity of the neutron flow” as if they know what it means?’, ‘Is their nose big enough?’.
Immediately everyone is doing google image searches to see what the new incumbent looks like in tweed, or, just on the off chance, a really big scarf.
Of course, in reality it is going to be months before we learn anything about Ncuti (pronounced ‘shooty’) Gatwa’s incarnation of the Timeless Child, the Oncoming Storm, Theta Sigma,...

Just like everyone has "their" James Bond, most British people have their Doctor Who. Or just "Doctor." It's usually the actor who inhabited the part when they first came to the series at an impressionable age. My Bond was Roger Moore, because his movies always seemed to be on telly on Saturday nights and over the holidays, and my Doctor was Peter Davison, looking so young and dashing in his cricket jumper. He was sadly replaced by Colin Baker in his silly clown coat, and then Sylvester McCoy, who finally killed off any interest I had in the show. As he did the British public in...

Regeneration stories are a tricky one in that they aren’t entirely consistent. The first time the process was even called regeneration was eleven years into the show’s first run. That story, ‘Planet of the Spiders’, felt like a summing up of the Pertwee era, a celebration of what had made it work and an indication that it was time to move on. This feeling crops up several times across the show’s history. Sometimes there’s a suggestion of the show addressing its own flaws, other times there’s just a bunch of strange decisions being made in the midst of chaotic productions. The only consistent is one actor leaves, another arrives, and change is afoot.
As we anticipate the Doctor’s next change, due this autumn in 2022’s third special, here are the past regeneration stories ranked from least to most successful.

It’s not unusual, in the world of Doctor Who, for the same actor to play more than one role on screen. From classic to modern Doctor Who, Nicholas Courtney, Ian Marter, Lalla Ward, Jaqueline Hill, Jean Marsh, Adjoa Andoh, Eve Myles, Naoko Mori, Vinette Robinson and more have all played multiple parts in the whoniverse. Before she debuted as companion Martha Jones, Freema Agyeman was a Torchwood employee who fell foul of the Cybermen in series two’s ‘Army of Ghosts’. Karen Gillan was a seer in series four episode ‘The Fires of Pompeii’ before she recurred as Eleven’s companion Amy Pond. Even the Doctor has had test runs. Colin Baker played a Gallifreyan commander in season twenty before taking over from Peter Davison. Peter Capaldi appeared in ‘The Fires of Pompeii’ as well as playing John Frobisher on Torchwood before taking up residence in the Tardis.

As recently as September 2020 David Tennant topped a Radio Times poll of favourite Doctors. He beat Tom Baker in a 2006 Doctor Who Magazine poll, and was voted the best TV character of the 21st Century by the readers of Digital Spy. He was the Doctor during one of Doctor Who‘s critical and commercial peaks, bringing in consistently high ratings and a Christmas day audience of 13.31 million for ‘Voyage of the Damned’, and 12.27 million for his final episode, ‘The End of Time – Part Two’. He is the only other Doctor who challenges Tom Baker in terms of associated iconography, even being part of the Christmas idents on BBC One as his final episodes were broadcast. Put simply, the Tenth Doctor is ‘My Doctor’ for a huge swathe of people and David Tennant in a brown coat will be the image they think of when Doctor Who is mentioned.

In 2014, when Doctor Who Magazine asked its readers to rank the show’s first 50 years, out of 241 options, Season 24 stories ‘Time and the Rani’ came 239th, ‘Paradise Towers’ 230th, ‘Delta and the Bannermen’ 217th, with ‘Dragonfire’ thought best of in 215th place. This was largely a repeat of its 2009 poll, although then readers rated ‘Delta and the Bannermen’ above ‘Dragonfire’. Season 24 was also ranked bottom in a GQ article ranking every series of Doctor Who – a combination of words I never thought I’d write.
Season 24 of Doctor Who went into production just as its 23rd season, the 14-episode ‘The Trial of a Time-Lord’ was finishing up on TV. By late 1986, producer John Nathan-Turner was expecting to be moved onto another show and had lost both his script-editor and the show’s most prolific writer.

The Tenth Doctor, David Tennant, is set to return to Doctor Who. Not on TV, unfortunately, but in new audio drama Out of Time 2: The Gates of Hell, which will be released in June and team him up with the Fifth Doctor, Peter Davison.
The story sees both Doctors arriving in the Paris Catacombs at different points in time, with Five wandering in there in 1809 (possibly significant as being in the aftermath of France’s war against Sweden), while Ten uses it in 1944 to escape from Nazis. Unfortunately, the two Doctors’ timelines intersecting creates a temporal anomaly that allows the Cybermen to take over the Earth, requiring the pair to travel back in time together and stop the invasion before it begins.

A new Doctor Who poll that set to find out who the most popular Doctor ever is has returned both some expected and unexpected results. RadioTimes.com ran the poll, which reportedly brought in around 50,000 votes, and now the final figures are back and Whovians everywhere have declared that David Tennant is the greatest incarnation of the Time Lord.
This isn’t much of a surprise, as the Scottish actor has managed to hold on to his widely popular status over the last ten years since he bowed out of the role on New Year’s Day 2010, nearly always coming out on top in polls of this type. Second place, however, is much more of a shock. Current Doctor Jodie Whittaker – whose era has been hugely divisive – was hot on Tennant’s heels, as he gained 10,518 votes while Whittaker brought in 10,423.

David Tennant’s incarnation of the Doctor became the most iconic face of the rebooted show, helping take Doctor Who to heights of popularity not seen since the classic series. But though his image has become instantly recognizable, a dig into The Inside Story – a 2006 behind-the-scenes book about production on seasons 1 and 2 – has unearthed a surprising change in the Tenth Doctor’s appearance that was ultimately dropped.
Whovians will know Ten had a habit of whipping out a pair of spectacles now and then, presumably to maximize his reading powers. But originally, he wanted to wear the specs all the time. The BBC, however, wouldn’t allow it.
“There was one point where I was thinking about having [glasses] on all the time. I quite like the idea of there being a speccy hero; I mean it certainly hasn’t done Harry Potter any harm,” he said.

Doctor Who‘s big 50th anniversary special, “The Day of the Doctor,” thrilled fans around the world and is widely considered one of the sci-fi institution’s finest hours. And one of its own finest moments was Tom Baker’s cameo towards the end of the movie-sized event. The iconic former star of the show turned up to play the Curator, a mysterious individual hinted to be one of the Doctor’s future incarnations (wearing one of his old faces).
Someone who’s not a fan of this cameo though is Colin Baker (no relation), the Sixth Doctor to Tom’s Fourth. While speaking to Den of Geek at Edinburgh’s Capital Sci-Fi Con earlier this year, the actor – who starred as the Time Lord from 1984-86 – didn’t hold back about his feelings on the other Baker’s Curator cameo, which he described as “naff.”

It’s February and I’m at Capital Sci Fi Con in Edinburgh, sitting next to Colin Baker. The day before, I’d brought my young sons to his table for an autograph, where he’d entertained them with all the bluster, bombast and larger-than-life loquaciousness we’d all come to expect from the Sixth Doctor, even if the man in whose gaze they were held transfixed was wearing a slightly older face, and a significantly less colourful jacket than they were accustomed to seeing.
For today’s interview, Baker is thoroughly shorn of his Sixth-ness, and seems more like the lawyer he once trained to be. He’s engaging, generous and attentive, and clearly has a mind like a steel trap. I wouldn’t have liked to have found myself opposite him in court.
We find ourselves reflecting on Baker’s deep connection to Doctor Who, and the legacy of the show itself.

Warning: contains spoilers for Doctor Who series 12
The dust has now settled on the Earth-shattering finale of Doctor Who series 12, and in hindsight, not all my predictions were on the money. It was hasty to say “The big reveal in the finale is almost certainly something to do with Rassilon”, or that “There’s no way the Ruth Doctor can be an incarnation before Hartnell”. Meanwhile, other people have had better luck with their predictions. For instance, my then eight-year-old son predicted this two years ago:
My son is playing Doctor Who and is telling me that the Doctor has had 2 trillion lives "Not on TV, in real life" and I am both heart-warmed and *outraged* by this flagrant disregard for canon.

Regenerations in Doctor Who are always epic scenes, right? Having one Doctor bravely meet their end only to be replaced by a brand new star is a major part of the transition between eras. One time in Who history, though, things didn’t go to plan. When Colin Baker was let go by the BBC in 1986, he turned down the offer to return for a brief regeneration scene. So, what we got was his successor Sylvester McCoy in a bad blonde wig. Watch the moment here, if you dare.
Reflecting back on the incident in 2019, Baker has now admitted that he thinks he was wrong to refuse to return for the scene, feeling that he was “selfish” to ignore what the fans wanted. Before he was cast as the Twelfth Doctor in 2013, Peter Capaldi had already starred on Doctor Who in an episode back in 2008 opposite David Tennant. Though he’s not the only Time Lord to first act as a guest star on the show – Colin Baker played another role before he was cast as the Sixth Doctor in the classic series – this fact drummed up a lot of confusion from fans at the time. In response, showrunner Steven Moffat promised he’d explain it. And explain it he did.
To begin with, let’s familiarize ourselves with Capaldi’s first Who character, Caecillius, a kindly Roman man who appeared in “The Fires of Pompeii.” Though he was fated to die along with the rest of the city, the Doctor decided to save him and his family from the eruption of Vesuvius. Fast forward to 2014 when the Doctor discovers his new face for the first time.

One of the most famous villains in Doctor Who mythology is the Valeyard, who first appeared in the era of Colin Baker’s Sixth Doctor. Back then, the character was revealed to be a future, evil incarnation of the Doctor. Apparently, at some point after his twelfth regeneration, the Doctor would become evil and travel back in time to frame his past self for false crimes and steal his regenerations.
The Valeyard was also described as an amalgam of the Doctor’s darkness that finally succumbed to his worst instincts, and who now views the Time Lord he’d once been as the moral counterpart of his existence, who needs to be eliminated in order for the Valeyard to take control of the full set of powers and resources at the Doctor’s disposal.
When Steven Moffat took over the show in 2009 though, the Valeyard presented a problem, since the...

Ever since Jodie Whittaker was announced as the Thirteenth Doctor in Doctor Who, we’ve seen the actors who played previous incarnations of the character pitch in with their opinions on the casting.
Most of them have been overwhelmingly supportive, though Fifth Doctor Peter Davison famously commented that he was worried that Whittaker’s Doctor meant that there was a “loss of a role model for boys,” The Sixth Doctor, Colin Baker, quickly strangled that argument though, hitting back by saying “you don’t have to be of a gender of someone to be a role model.”
Now, the Seventh Doctor, Sylvester McCoy, has joined the debate, admitting that he was a bit “perturbed” about the casting. In an interview with Mirror Online at the London Comic-Con, McCoy said:
“I was a bit perturbed at first. I thought, ‘Hmm I wonder if that will work’, but then I started to...
