Unlucky Stars (2015)
Was waiting for it and it's worth all the wait!!!
Unlucky Stars (English) 6/10 Genre: Action Director: Dennis Ruel Cast: Dennis Ruel, Ken Quitugua, Sari Sabella, Vlad Rimburg, Emmanuel Manzanares, Sam Hargrave Country: USA Language: English Year: 2015
I have been waiting for this film for a while and I think it took a long time to release which is pretty understandable considering the fact that it's an independent film. I'm a big fan of the LBP stunt group, Vlad Rimburg and all the guys who are involved in their short projects which has been out there for a number of years. They have been making numerous short martial arts films which can be found on their respective channels on You Tube, which I've been following for a while now. The best part is that they are true to basics, their action choreography and stunt are simply awesome as it doesn't involve any kind of CGI or special effects which they have done time and again in their short films. Unlucky Stars is the latest offering by them and it sure lives up to the expectation similar to what the Z-Team did with their film The Price Of Success, in fact I felt Unlucky Stars was better in terms of technical aspect which is pretty remarkable for a low budget Independent film. The story is about a private detective and his newly hired associate who get involved in a bizarre chain of events. Dennis Ruel of Rope A Dope fame not only directs but has also written and starred in it, so full marks to him on this effort and yes he did kick some ass in the film as well. The film stars their regular team if you follow their channel that includes the likes of Ken Quitugua, Emmanuel Manzanares etc. then we have Sam Hargrave of Captain America fame and Vlad Rimburg who is also the fight choreographer in the film. The fights are really well choreographed and there is plenty of them for the delight of any Martial arts fan. I also loved the editing of the film which has some really nice cuts on occasions which is pretty rare from couple of guys who are rather known for their fighting skills, once again its Dennis Ruel and Vlad Rimburg. A worth watching film for any action fan and trust me you won't be disappointed.
The Transporter Refueled (2015)
TV Series was OK but this is disaster for Fans
The Transporter Refueled (English) 3.5/10 Genre: Action Director: Camille Delamarre Cast: Ed Skrein, Loan Chabanol, Ray Stevenson Year: 2015
The Transporter series introduced Jason Statham to global audience as the new action star of the decade but The Transporter Refueled did the complete opposite to Ed Skrein and I wish he had stick to Game Of Thrones as I really liked his character as Daario Naharis as he left the role for The Transporter reboot. I kind of feel that I was forced to write this review as they completely ruined one of my favorite action movie series, I felt that even the TV series was way better. As a fan of the series I was eagerly waiting for it knowing the fact that you can never replace Jason Statham but still kept my hopes high but turns out exactly the same way you would expect, another failed experiment just like most of the reboot, remakes or sequel/prequel these days.I hated the storyline where Frank Martin is kind of a lapdog of four bitches and the father son relationship angle was even more pathetic, I mean come on his father is supposed to be some ex-spy or something but gets kidnapped in the same movie twice. Like most of the reboots these days the primary character plays the second lead which I really hate examples being Hit-man and Mad Max. The story this time shows Frank Martin helping four female hookers who plan to take revenge on the guy who destroyed their lives. Camille Delamarre once again showed his incompetence as director like he did for Brick Mansions. Acting was pretty much bad to awful with Ed Skrein nowhere close to Statham's legacy specially the fight scenes, not sure why Ray Stevenson agreed for such a role as Frank Martin's father and honestly don't even want to talk about the rest of the cast. The action was good in patches with more guns than hand combat which is the highlight of the series. A complete waste of a reboot and I sincerely wish that they don't carry on with this kind of crap.
Tremors 5: Bloodlines (2015)
Impressive stuff for a B-grade film
Tremors 5: Bloodlines (English) 6.5/10 Genre: Adventure/Action Director: Don Michael Paul Cast: Michael Gross, Jamie Kennedy, Natalie Becker Year: 2015
This movie certainly is a victim of bad marketing and promotion and will undoubtedly be one of the most underrated films of 2015 and honestly I never knew that there will be a fifth coming out from the Tremors franchise. This also happens to be the second film this year after Jurassic World which took me back to my childhood when I used to love these monster movies but surprisingly I felt this was better than Jurassic World considering the fact that it was probably made on one tenth of Jurassic World's budget, no theatrical release and above all I had no expectation from this film and watched it just for fun, turns out it's more than just fun. The special effects and creature effects were as good as any high budget film and since this one is just a direct-to-DVD B-grade film it somehow was the best as compared to other films made on low budget. The story this time moves to South Africa where Burt Gummer is back hunting down Graboids with the help of his unknown Son. Don Michael Paul who has directed quite a few B-grade films probably did his best job as director in regards to B-grade films. Acting was not bad if not brilliant which is pretty understandable for a film like this with Michael Gross reprising his role as Gummer for the fifth time and the only actor to appear in all the Tremors films along with Jamie Kennedy performing supporting duties as his son. The action, stunt and creature effects were pretty cool and the reason why I loved it so much. If you are fan of the Tremors franchise then you cannot afford to miss this one which might surprise you as well.
Navy Seals vs. Zombies (2015)
Horrible film
Navy Seals vs. Zombies (English) 1/10 Genre: Action/Horror/real crap Director: Stanton Barrett Cast: Ed Quinn, Mikal Vega, Damon Lipari, Michael Dudikoff Year: 2015
I don't know who makes this kind of crap and even bigger question, why did I watch it? I guess only because of Michael Dudikoff as it's his comeback film after 10 years although his screen time is not more than 5-10 mins. I have seen a lot of bad films but this one is a whole new level of bad film, it's like the Ben Hur of crappy films. Normally I don't like to criticize films no matter how bad they are as an appreciation for the people who put in their hard work but this one surely doesn't deserve any. Two minutes into the film and I knew I made a huge mistake of watching this one. I felt asleep ( I swear to God I did) and only if I didn't have this principle to finish a film once I start watching it no matter how bad it is I would have never dared to complete this film and turns out to be the most painful experience I ever had and I was desperately waiting for it to finish. Acting, direction, story, editing, sound and everything else is horrible and I think the best part of the film was it's trailer. Just to give you an idea of what's in the plot, Five Navy Seals go on a rescue mission to save the Vice President of the United States in a town infested by Zombies. I mean really, you will just send five guys with one chopper (not sure how did they manage to got the chopper) to rescue the Vice President of US. The Zombie make up was laughable, I have seen better make up in my office during Halloween, acting was worse than a Kindergarten play and...Forget it, it will go on and on. Stanton Barrett who is some stunt guy should stick to doing stunts or should seriously take a crash course in film direction before his next film. The actors were more painful but It was good to see Michael Dudikoff, not for his acting or anything, he even had this stupid scar oh his face to make him kinda look bad ass. If you love Dudikoff and miss him on screen re-watch American Ninja or any of his previous films till he comes out with any decent one. This is not a review, this a warning message to stay away from this film as I have already suffered and don't want others to go through the pain.
The Marine 4: Moving Target (2015)
Not bad for a direct to video film
If you are not looking for much logic or depth then you can surely enjoy this film as a nice action entertainer. This time the production value and budget was a bit higher than its previous installment which was a good thing. The film had lot of action right from the word go (at times it felt a bit too much) and continues till the end where everybody is just shooting at each other with some nicely choreographed hand to hand combat as well. Mike 'The Miz' Mizanin returns as Sgt. Jake Carter in the fourth installment of the franchise and becomes the first WWE wrestler to work in two films of the franchise. I have always enjoyed all the films in The Marine franchise as all of them takes away your boredom for little over an hour. It may be a million miles away from a good franchise but it's not a pathetic one for sure. The story this time shows Jake Carter working in a security agency which is protecting a witness who has proof against a defense corporation's evil agenda, soon Carter finds himself in a bloody war against ex-special forces turned mercenaries who are hell bound to kill the witness. William Kaufman who had directed films like Sinners and Saints does a pretty good job as the director. Mike 'The Miz' Mizanin may not be the best wrestler/actor around but he sure is better than few for sure and I loved his character in both the films. The film also had WWE diva Summer Rae who had almost no duologue's in the film neither a impressive character, all she did was shooting. Melissa Roxburgh and Matthew MacCaull as supporting characters gave a typical direct-to- video performance. But overall like I said at the beginning if you are not looking for some serious stuff then you can definitely enjoy this film.
Constantine (2014)
Constantine and Matt Ryan deserve more
Constantine series is one of the best things that I have seen off late and while it still remains a mystery whether there will be a second season or not, I am definitely vouching for another season or more. I liked the movie starring Keanu Reeves but the series is just too good and boy Matt Ryan is just mind blowing with his portrayal of the titular character. There are rumors that Constantine could be a part of the DC Cinematic universe with Matt Ryan as Constantine as Ryan himself has shown interest as such but the truth of these rumors remain far away from reality. Although the series producers are pitching in new ideas to keep the show alive, we have to wait till May when NBC will announce whether there will be a season 2 or not. We already had the sad news that there will be no Dredd 2 (although it's a different aspect but the pain is same) and I hope Constantine doesn't suffer the same fate. So If anyone at NBC is listening, please come out with another season and in the meantime if anyone hasn't seen the series then please do the needful, trust me you won't regret.
