The Magdalene Sisters (2002)
The nuns in this film never sang 'How do solve a Problem Like Maria?'
Their idea of problem solving was more based on the Marque de Sade's idea of fun. If you are in the mood for sadism and horror...this is the film for you!!
I could not imagine that such a place as the laundry run by The Order of Magdelene Sisters could exist until I saw this film. The four girls that the story focused on Rose, Bernadette, Margaret and Crispina existed. I have been to Ireland and seen the beauty of that country. I once envied the life of those lucky enough to live there. I don't any longer.
The movie does not attack the Catholic faith so much as give a mindset of the 1960's in Ireland. My word here in the USA hippies were making love not war and these poor girls were only being human beings. I don't like to share the details of a film, but consider that one girl was an orphan and sent to the Magdelene's because she liked to flirt!! One was sent because she was raped!! My goodness, how barbaric can people be? film. And these people were nuns and priests for heaven's sake. Ah and let me not forget the parents who sent their daughters to that place. I will never complain about my parents again. Promise.
Please watch this film.
Secondhand Lions (2003)
Terrific Family Film - This film is worth owning.
The performances given by Robert Duvall, Michael Caine and Haley Joel Osment were stellar. At first I wondered just when Michael Caine was going to appear in the film, much to my surprise he was the brother of Robert Duvall. Now that is acting!! I actually had to pause the dvd and zoom in to make certain it was Caine. No, I am not talking special effects...I am talking personal alteration to acommodate the role. Michael Caine is truly awesome.
Osment's performance matched those of his co-stars. In my opinion, Haley Joel Osment is a natural born actor. The movie was well written. The direction was superior. Ah to be carefree and eccentric like Duvall and Caine[Garth and Hub respectively]. Osment[Walter] was both student and teacher in this wonderful story. I rated the film a 10. I have watched it 5 times and each time I find myself awed by the 'joie de vive'. I took away from the film a message of be strong enough to learn, accept and make choices, no matter how difficult.
Cheaper by the Dozen (2003)
So, Who is Hillary Duff?
Just kidding. I truly believe that some people have good intentions when commencing to write a critique. However, it seems to me like some of the people who commented about "Cheaper by the Dozen" were either on drugs or should be. Sheesh guys...it was a movie. It was just plain old entertainment. Time will decide whether or not this film was a classic. Please, take it from me don't hold your breath waiting. I'm not going to hold mine.
Yup, I thought it was going to be a comedy. Yup, I became annoyed with the movie about the time they all moved to Evanston, IL. Yup, the lil red headed dude[Mark] reminded me of the Harry Potter kid. Big deal. Frankly, the last 152 critiques were funnier, though some much more annoying in length, than the kids in that movie.
All in all...it was an okay film. Well worth the 99 cents that I spent to rent it. Musicians1, Victor Field and Katrina Ann Van Tylor were slendid as comedic crictics. Katrina should be given the award for Epic criticism. Victor the award for best music critic and last and thank god not least musician1 The Life Time Achievement Award for lack of any structure, punctuation or thought. Musician1 is the person who I owe my deepest gratitude for getting me to read all 152 comments. I had to see if they were all going to be so rambling. Thank goodness for brevity.
