Reviews
Alma's Not Normal (2020)
Brilliant
The main four female cast members are brilliant in every way. This series deals will some rough topics in a poignant and hilarious manner. Highly recommended.
Ray Donovan: The Movie (2022)
A Good Wrap Up
An interesting approach to wrapping up the series. I liked the numerous flashbacks to fill in all the historical gaps we were missing. There was enough closure for all the characters that mattered.
The Lost Daughter (2021)
Best Birth Control Ever
Colman and Buckley are spectacular in their portrayal of a mother dealing with guilt, anger, frustration and depression. I felt suffocated watched Buckley and I felt seething rage watching Colman. Their ability to help the viewer embody their characters past and present is remarkable.
And Just Like That... (2021)
Awful...just like that.
Sometimes people need to just leave well enough alone. This "sequel" is awful on every level. The writing is terrible, it's not funny or edgy. They desperately try to shoe-horn in every conceivable "woke" angle. It is absolutely cringe-worthy.
Don't Look Up (2021)
Absolute Garbage
Other than the star power and premise, which was promising, this is an absolute failure. They try desperately for satire but it falls flat on all levels. A waste of time.
Love Actually (2003)
Garbage....Actually
What a waste of many excellent actors. Stories are ridiculously stupid, terrible script, just awful. 90% of the "love stories" are based on looks and absolutely nothing meaningful. Do not waste your time.
Criminal: UK (2019)
Unique and Compelling
An excellent crime drama from the perspective of an interrogation room. Interesting, compelling and spell-binding. Suspenseful with a fascinating twist in each episode. Highly recommended.
The Morning Show (2019)
Solid First Season
The first season was very good and I would have given the show a higher ranking but season 2 is weak. It has become very soap-opera-ish. Too many chaotic tangential stories and lots of annoying hysterics.
100 Humans (2020)
Waste of Time
I barely made it through one episode. It's just stupid and silly. I think they are trying to make "science" accessible to mainstream but they fail miserably.
The Great Canadian Baking Show (2017)
Not as good as the British version
The judges are great, especially Bruno, but the new hosts Alan and Ann are absolutely the worst. They are cringe-worthy and really diminish the quality of the show. The producers need to replace these hosts STAT.
Finch (2021)
Tom Hanks Can't Save This
There is nothing redeeming about the movie. Bad script. Lame plot line. I gave it 4 stars because the dog is super cute. Probably the worst Tom Hanks movie ever made.
War of the Worlds (2019)
Insufferable
Slow plodding melodrama which doles out crumbs of information at an insufferable pace. The Emily character is the same woman from Normal People and she is just as annoying. Pouty sullen teenager. Season 2 was worse than Season 1. I felt zero compassion for any of the characters. You really start hoping for the end of the world, or rather, the end of humanity.
Dave Chappelle: The Closer (2021)
Brilliant
If you are offended by this...you simply don't "get it". He is a master. Dave is a comedic genius who goes deep. He continues to amaze in this Netflix special.
The Mauritanian (2021)
Difficult to Watch
This story leaves you feeling like you have been punched in the gut. It is not a cinematic masterpiece but it is a story that needs to be told and people need to watch it.
The Chair (2021)
Boring
A complete bore-fest. Shallow character development. The child actor is annoying as heck. The love relationship is not believable. I'm a big fan of Sandra Oh but this one was a miss. Disappointing.
CODA (2021)
Sweet Feel-Good Film
A heart-warming film about family,
relationships, and the challenges and celebrations of a mixed hearing/deaf family. It was funny, poignant, and well acted. While the story arch was predictable, it was a very enjoyable film. A film filled with positive messages during this difficult time is welcomed.
Mr. Corman (2021)
Tries Too Hard
This series tries too hard to tackle ALL human issues. Personal angst, flawed relationships, existential crisis. It also tries to hard to portray it in a hip or interesting way with the animation, annoying clanging sounds, and a dance/song number à la...La La Land...but horribly bad. I watched the first three episodes and I'm out.
Blindspot (2015)
Boring
I lost interest almost immediately. The music and the acting are over-the-top dramatic in the most ridiculous way. The writing is horrible. It is predicable and boring.
The Kominsky Method (2018)
First Two Seasons Very Good, Skip Season Three
The dynamic between Michael Douglas and Alan Arkin made the first two seasons. Their relationship is both hilarious and tender. Season 3 was a colossal disappointment. It takes a nose-dive without Arkin. The writing is bad, the story line ridiculous, the characters annoying and it is simply not funny at all. Watch the first 2 seasons and forget about season 3.
The White Lotus (2021)
We Have All Met These People
A train wreck of characters....compelling, vile, and darkly hilarious. While we are led to believe one person dies at the beginning of the first episode, as the series progresses, you desperately hope that they all do. Highly recommended.
The Graduate (1967)
Point for the Soundtrack
Unlike the soundtrack, this movie does not stand the test of time. It always shows up on "Greatest Movies of all Time" but I'm not sure why. Perhaps you needed to be living in the 60s to appreciate it. All I saw, aside from the obvious symbolism, was a privileged stupid white kid surrounded by privileged stupid white people and an absurd plot line. I gave it a 1 rating because the soundtrack is great. Movie was a waste of time.
The Father (2020)
Gut Wrenching
This falls under the category of "exceptional movies I never want to watch again". A painfully accurate depiction of a man suffering from the progression of dementia and the effect on those around him. Hopkins is phenomenal. One of his greatest performances. And one of the best movies I have seen in a long time.
Defending Jacob (2020)
Compelling Mystery
Lady Mary can cry like no other....
Acting was very good. A story about multiple layers of tragedy and the psychology of criminal behaviour. The ending was a little disappointing. If the series was true to the book, I would have rated it higher.
Nomadland (2020)
Wide But Not Deep
The film is unique. It captures a sliver of this life style. It touches on many people who live this way; some by choice and others, not. The film goes wide trying to incorporate every angle but fails to go deep so I was left feeling a bit disappointed. There are some poignant moments and beautiful cinematography. Overall, a thought-provoking film.
A.P. Bio (2018)
Quirky and Funny
Not your usual comedy. Very funny and irreverent. All the actors; teachers and students alike are very good. It is worth watching just for Paula Pell. She is hilarious!
