Doctor Who is heading for a significant shakeup as Millie Gibson, who plays the Doctor’s newest companion, Ruby Sunday, prepares to exit the series after one season. The BBC introduced Gibson as Ruby Sunday in the latest Doctor Who Special “Doctor Who: The Church on Ruby Street,” alongside Ncuti Gatwa as the Doctor. Replacing Gibson in Season 15 of the long-running series is Varara Sethu.
Gibson will return as Ruby Sunday for season 14 of the series, which is set to drop in May on the BBC in the U.K. and Disney+ internationally. Season 15 is currently shooting in Wales, where Gatwa and Sethu will likely learn how much running is involved in the Doctor Who filming process. No reason has been given as to why Gibson is exiting the show.

No official announcement has yet been made by the BBC or production company Bad Wolf, but that hasn’t stopped Variety confirming, or IMDb listing, that Millie Gibson’s successor as Doctor Who companion will be Andor and Jurassic World Dominion actor Varada Sethu.
Sethu is rumoured to be filming with Ncuti Gatwa on series 15 already, and to fulfil the role of the Doctor’s new companion in all eight episodes of that series. So… who is she?
Cinta Kaz in Star Wars Andor
Tony Gilroy’s live-action Cassian Andor prequel series Star Wars: Andor aired in late 2021 on Disney+. Set five years before 2016 movie Rogue One, it’s about the formation of the Rebel Alliance in opposition to the fascistic Galactic Empire. In it, 32-year-old Sethu plays Cinta Kaz, a member of a rebel cell operating on the planet Aldhani who works alongside her partner Vel Sartha, a cousin of Senator Mon Mothma.

According to a report, new Doctor Who companion Millie Gibson is leaving after her first series, and her replacement has been cast.
We’ve only had one hour of Ncuti Gatwa’s era of Doctor Who. However, in production terms, the second series is currently filming, and willl be broadcast in 2025.
While there are many advantages to filming so far ahead, one of the disadvantages is that information is harder to keep contained.
Which leads us to some news that was first reported by The Mirror – so do take it with a pinch of salt – but the story’s been picked up by a lot of websites, and it looks as though there’s something in this.
Apparently, Millie Gibson will leave Doctor Who after the 2024 Christmas Special. The new companion is said to be Varada Sethu, who is best known for starring in Neil Cross’ apocalyptic drama Hard Sun.

Since “Veep” series creator Armando Iannucci left the presidential series after its fourth season, television has been longing for his very particular brand of satire. Finally, that longing has been answered: HBO just dropped the official teaser trailer for his latest satire, space comedy “Avenue 5.”
Starring “Veep” alumnus and all-around comedy veteran Hugh Laurie, “Avenue 5” is “set in the future, mostly in space” onboard the titular Avenue 5 space ship. Laurie plays Ryan Clark, captain of the Avenue 5, who — as you can see from the trailer below, set to Harry Nilsson’s “Spaceman” — knows how to charm any passenger who takes up residency on his ship, even in major crisis time. He also knows how to pull off an empty space captain one-liner in any situation, whether it’s “fly safe, fly true,” “let’s keep our eyes on the prize,” or “set your phasers to fun.”

“Luther” creator Neil Cross is adapting his own novel of murder and the supernatural into a four-part series, “Because the Night,” for British commercial broadcaster ITV.
The drama is being produced by Euston Films, the classic label revived five years ago by Fremantle, which will oversee international distribution. Polly Hill, ITV’s head of drama, commissioned the series, which is based on Cross’ book “Burial.”
The show centers on Nathan, a well-meaning but aimless man who harbors a dark secret and is shaken when a figure from his past shows up on his doorstep. “I’m truly excited to be working with ITV to make ‘Because the Night,’” said Cross. “It’s one of my favorite stories: a tale of psychological suspense, of guilt and ghosts and murder. Oh, and love. Always love.”
Hill described the series as a “gripping contemporary thriller, which is both chilling and compelling.”

Metacritic has unveiled its list of the worst new TV shows of 2018, and you can say this for the small screen: Its most poorly received offerings fared better with reviewers than their silver-screen counterparts. Only two of the top 10 landed in the dreaded red zone of a Metascore below 40, which indicates “generally unfavorable reviews”; the other eight were all in the “mixed or average reviews” range. Even so, Netflix’s widely disliked “Insatiable” — which courted controversy before it even premiered, owing largely to accusations of “fat-shaming” — easily topped the list.
In his review of the “disastrous comedy,” IndieWire’s Ben Travers noted that “heroes are villains, villains are heroes, statutory rape is a joke, and people — people! — are murdered, all in a high school ‘comedy’ primarily obsessed with winning a fancy tiara. Lauren Gussis’ disastrous hodgepodge of mistakes is an absolute mess, and it marks the worst Netflix original series yet to be released.

After three years, TV finally has one of its best detectives back on the case. And it looks like he’s got some unexpected company.
BBC One has released the trailer and release date for upcoming episodes of “Luther.” This latest season looks to roust John Luther out of isolation one more time, this go-around complete with what appears to be the return of Ruth Wilson in the role of Luther’s deadly sometimes-helper Alice. In addition to Elba and Wilson, fellow series vets Dermot Crowley and Michael Smiley are also returning for this round of episodes.
Series creator Neil Cross, who’s written all previous 16 episodes of “Luther,” was also behind “Hard Sun,” which premiered on Hulu earlier this year. Regardless of how this impending season wraps up, Cross said in an interview earlier this year that a feature film ending to the “Luther” story still has a shot.

Detective work has never been easy for Dci John Luther. Come to think of it, being a character in a Neil Cross show has never been easy either. In advance of the upcoming Season 5 of “Luther,” the BBC released the first official footage from the new episodes. Lest anyone think the latest installments would take it easy on the guy who gives the show its title, this new clip finds the show keeping up its traditional level of brutality.
The clip below certainly manages to squeeze plenty of pain into a two-minute punch.

After starting his career in music, British actor Jim Sturgess got his big film break on Julie Taymor’s “Across the Universe” and continued his big-screen presence in “21,” “The Way Back” and “Cloud Atlas,” among others. Now he’s returning to TV, where he got his start in acting, starring in BBC’s apocalyptic crime drama “Hard Sun,” streaming on Hulu, as Detective Charlie Hicks, who discovers a government secret about the end of the world.
What’s it been like to have one of your first lead TV roles on “Hard Sun”?
My friends and family paid more attention to this show than any of the films I’ve made, because it’s on Saturday night on BBC1. I think they forgot I was even an actor until I was pumped into their living rooms.
What is it about the show that drew you back to the small screen?...

TV academy voters will get a bit of a break this month when they sit down to cast their 2018 Emmy Awards nominations ballots, This year, they only have to consider 160 shows for Best Drama Series; in 2017, that number was 180. And they no longer have to winnow their choices down to just 10 favorites. As with last year, they are being told to “Vote for as many achievements in this category that you have seen and feel are worthy of a nomination.”
Remember, only seven of the shows below will earn bids for Best Drama Series when the nominations are announced on July 12. While the reigning champ, “The Handmaid’s Tale,” is back with a sophomore season, it faces “Game of Thrones” for the first time. Some of the strongest television dramas are cautionary tales — giving viewers tools to stop our future from becoming a dystopia. As tough political, racial and social issues continue to divide the country and darken news headlines, it is imperative that audiences don’t look away from equally dark television.
Sure, after being bombarded with Trump tweets and reports of mass shootings, Ice raids and another rollback on healthcare, the temptation is often to just kick back with something lighthearted and escapist. There’s nothing wrong with a good cathartic cry over the loss of Jack Pearson on the more sentimental drama “This Is Us,” for example. But there is a danger in burying one’s head in series that don’t offer anything in the way of enrichment.
Zone out for too long and terrible things can happen around you. Case in point: “The Handmaid’s Tale.”

Genre shows were once a niche market, but “Game of Thrones” helped open the door for larger Academy acclaim. In its absence from Emmy eligibility last season, HBO’s other epic series, “Westworld,” filled its spot on the ballot — and earned the most nominations of the year at 22 (tied with “Saturday Night Live”). Now “Game of Thrones” is back in the running, but so are a slew of others, ranging from Netflix’s sophomore season of “Stranger Things” and freshman offering “Altered Carbon” to FX’s “Legion” and AMC’s “The Walking Dead” franchise, plus Marvel and DC superhero shows, proving genre is more popular — and prevalent — than ever.

With astonishing processing power and top-notch teams that know how to create high-end visual effects on a tight budget and timeline, vfx artists routinely turn in shots that thrill TV audiences. But visual effects must also support story and characters in invisible ways. And there’s even resistance to becoming a show known for its effects.
“They didn’t want this to be a vfx-driven show,” says Paul Graff, senior visual-effects producer for Netflix’s “Stranger Things” and a four-time Emmy winner. “They wanted vfx that were about the story, which is one that has things like monsters in it.”
Some of the most resonant effects just make things look slightly askew.

In its first-quarter financials operating profit at FremantleMedia fell by €2M (Us$2.4M) from last year, dropping from €15M to €13M on steady revenues of €271M, while operating profit at the group fell from €264M to €259M. The company said that it expects FremantleMedia to have a similar performance in the second quarter of the year but noted that revenue growth was expected to “accelerate in the second half of the year on the back of the new drama deliveries”.
This comes despite the launch of American Idol on ABC in March and its subsequent renewal for a second season as well as the premiere of dating format Hear Me, Love Me, See Me on TLC. German drama Charité, which is produced by Ufa Fiction and set in 1880s Berlin,...

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best show currently on TV?” can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: What is the best use of a song on a TV show?**
**Non-theme songs preferred. “Best” is loosely defined: Most memorable? Most moving? Cleverest? Most unexpected? etc.
Daniel Fienberg (@TheFienPrint), The Hollywood Reporter
I’m glad that last week I gave a short, simple and singular answer, because there’s absolutely no way to do this one without moving into a laundry list, starting with “The Oc” and “Hide & Seek,” a sequence so seminal in its moment that it earned an “SNL” parody. Then you have to pick something from “The Americans,” a show that has mastered the art of building scenes around iconic ’80s hits,...

Good news, freshman dramas! Perennial Emmy nominees “Better Call Saul” and “House of Cards” have taken the year off for creative reasons, opening the door for new shows to break through in Best Drama Series. As a refresher, last year’s seven nominees were “Better Call Saul,” “The Crown,” “House of Cards,” “Stranger Things,” “This Is Us,” “Westworld” and eventual winner “The Handmaid’s Tale.” “Game of Thrones” is expected to make a triumphant return to the category after being ineligible last year, but which brand new dramas could take advantage of the changing Emmy tides?
Netflix boasts a vast array of first-year gems, including “Altered Carbon,” “Mindhunter,” “Ozark” and “Seven Seconds.” “Ozark” looks to be a strong contender at the Emmys after earning nominations at the SAG Awards for leads Jason Bateman and Laura Linney, and the Golden Globes for Bateman. The dark drama about money laundering also prevailed...
