Doctor Who is heading for a significant shakeup as Millie Gibson, who plays the Doctor’s newest companion, Ruby Sunday, prepares to exit the series after one season. The BBC introduced Gibson as Ruby Sunday in the latest Doctor Who Special “Doctor Who: The Church on Ruby Street,” alongside Ncuti Gatwa as the Doctor. Replacing Gibson in Season 15 of the long-running series is Varara Sethu.

Gibson will return as Ruby Sunday for season 14 of the series, which is set to drop in May on the BBC in the U.K. and Disney+ internationally. Season 15 is currently shooting in Wales, where Gatwa and Sethu will likely learn how much running is involved in the Doctor Who filming process. No reason has been given as to why Gibson is exiting the show.

ITV confirms ‘The Cube’s return

ITV has confirmed what Deadline reported weeks ago — that game show The Cube is returning after being rested for five years. Objective Media Group label Wildcard Television will make a new five-part series, which will be hosted by Phillip Schofield. The format will feature two-player challenges for the first time, while the jackpot has been raised to £1M ($1.2M). A celebrity special will also broadcast on ITV. Executive producers are Ed de Burgh and Paul Wright for Wildcard.

“Luther” creator Neil Cross is adapting his own novel of murder and the supernatural into a four-part series, “Because the Night,” for British commercial broadcaster ITV.

The drama is being produced by Euston Films, the classic label revived five years ago by Fremantle, which will oversee international distribution. Polly Hill, ITV’s head of drama, commissioned the series, which is based on Cross’ book “Burial.”

The show centers on Nathan, a well-meaning but aimless man who harbors a dark secret and is shaken when a figure from his past shows up on his doorstep. “I’m truly excited to be working with ITV to make ‘Because the Night,’” said Cross. “It’s one of my favorite stories: a tale of psychological suspense, of guilt and ghosts and murder. Oh, and love. Always love.”

After three years, TV finally has one of its best detectives back on the case. And it looks like he’s got some unexpected company.

BBC One has released the trailer and release date for upcoming episodes of “Luther.” This latest season looks to roust John Luther out of isolation one more time, this go-around complete with what appears to be the return of Ruth Wilson in the role of Luther’s deadly sometimes-helper Alice. In addition to Elba and Wilson, fellow series vets Dermot Crowley and Michael Smiley are also returning for this round of episodes.

Series creator Neil Cross, who’s written all previous 16 episodes of “Luther,” was also behind “Hard Sun,” which premiered on Hulu earlier this year. Regardless of how this impending season wraps up, Cross said in an interview earlier this year that a feature film ending to the “Luther” story still has a shot.

Detective work has never been easy for Dci John Luther. Come to think of it, being a character in a Neil Cross show has never been easy either. In advance of the upcoming Season 5 of “Luther,” the BBC released the first official footage from the new episodes. Lest anyone think the latest installments would take it easy on the guy who gives the show its title, this new clip finds the show keeping up its traditional level of brutality.

NBC is spending the holidays with John Legend and Chrissy Teigen: The network will air the special A Legendary Christmas With John and Chrissy on Wednesday, Nov. 28 at 10/9c.

The couple will be joined by their friends and family, as well as to-be-announced celebrities, during the hourlong program. Additionally, Legend will perform songs from his upcoming album A Legendary Christmas.

The special reunites Egot winner Legend with NBC, where he starred in Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert and will serve as a coach on the spring cycle of The Voice. Teigen, meanwhile, is a co-host on Paramount Network’s Lip Sync Battle.

Jim Sturgess has been cast in Apple’s upcoming drama based on the life of 11-year-old investigative journalist Hilde Lysiak, the tech giant announced Tuesday.

Led by “The Florida Project” breakout Brooklynn Prince, the 10-episode drama follows a young girl who moves from Brooklyn to the small lakeside town her father left behind, where her dogged pursuit of the truth leads her to unearth a cold case that everyone in town, including her own father, tried hard to bury.

Sturgess will play Matthew Lysiak, Hilde’s father in the series created by Dana Fox and Dara Resnik.

“Crazy Rich Asians” helmer Jon M. Chu will direct and executive produce the untitled drama, which hails from Anonymous Content and Paramount Television. Joy Gorman Wettels and Sharlene Martin also serve as executive producers.

Exclusive: Jim Sturgess is set to star opposite 8-year-old The Florida Project standout Brooklynn Prince in Apple’s upcoming untitled Hilde Lysiak series, directed and executive produced by Crazy Rich Asians helmer Jon M. Chu.

The 10-episode mystery drama, which has a straight-to-series order, was inspired by the real-life story of 11-year-old Hilde Lysiak. Also described as a family drama, it follows a young girl (Prince) who moves from Brooklyn to the small lakeside town her father (Sturgess) left behind. Now he’s returning to TV, where he got his start in acting, starring in BBC’s apocalyptic crime drama “Hard Sun,” streaming on Hulu, as Detective Charlie Hicks, who discovers a government secret about the end of the world.

What’s it been like to have one of your first lead TV roles on “Hard Sun”?

My friends and family paid more attention to this show than any of the films I’ve made, because it’s on Saturday night on BBC1. I think they forgot I was even an actor until I was pumped into their living rooms.

What is it about the show that drew you back to the small screen?...

TV academy voters will get a bit of a break this month when they sit down to cast their 2018 Emmy Awards nominations ballots, This year, they only have to consider 160 shows for Best Drama Series; in 2017, that number was 180. And they no longer have to winnow their choices down to just 10 favorites. As with last year, they are being told to “Vote for as many achievements in this category that you have seen and feel are worthy of a nomination.”

Remember, only seven of the shows below will earn bids for Best Drama Series when the nominations are announced on July 12. Some of the strongest television dramas are cautionary tales — giving viewers tools to stop our future from becoming a dystopia. As tough political, racial and social issues continue to divide the country and darken news headlines, it is imperative that audiences don’t look away from equally dark television.

Sure, after being bombarded with Trump tweets and reports of mass shootings, Ice raids and another rollback on healthcare, the temptation is often to just kick back with something lighthearted and escapist. There’s nothing wrong with a good cathartic cry over the loss of Jack Pearson on the more sentimental drama “This Is Us,” for example. But there is a danger in burying one’s head in series that don’t offer anything in the way of enrichment.

Zone out for too long and terrible things can happen around you. Case in point: “The Handmaid’s Tale.”

With astonishing processing power and top-notch teams that know how to create high-end visual effects on a tight budget and timeline, vfx artists routinely turn in shots that thrill TV audiences. But visual effects must also support story and characters in invisible ways. And there’s even resistance to becoming a show known for its effects.

“They didn’t want this to be a vfx-driven show,” says Paul Graff, senior visual-effects producer for Netflix’s “Stranger Things” and a four-time Emmy winner. “They wanted vfx that were about the story, which is one that has things like monsters in it.”

Some of the most resonant effects just make things look slightly askew.

In its first-quarter financials operating profit at FremantleMedia fell by €2M (Us$2.4M) from last year, dropping from €15M to €13M on steady revenues of €271M, while operating profit at the group fell from €264M to €259M. Even old Auntie Beeb is in on the act, so to speak, with Doctor Who leading the charge but more recently in drama Hard Sun – a joint venture between the BBC and American streaming service Hulu.
