Exclusive: Emmy Award winner Archie Panjabi will star as a villain in Season 2 of Doctor Who, sources tell Deadline. The BBC and Disney+ series is set to return in 2025.
Details regarding her character remain under wraps. BBC and Disney+ declined to comment for this story.
Panjabi joins Ncuti Gatwa, who currently stars as the titular Time Lord; Millie Gibson, who plays his companion Ruby Sunday; and Varada Sethu, who will serve as the fifteenth Doctor co-companion Belinda Chandra.

Sylvester McCoy and Sophie Aldred do battle with Daleks, Cybermen and more, as Doctor Who series 25 comes to Blu-ray.
The superb collection of Doctor Who series-by-series Blu-ray sets is set to complete the Sylvester McCoy era of the show this October. That’s thanks to the news that series 25 of the original series will be landing on the format, with a huge collection of extra features.
The four stories that make up the series are Remembrance Of The Daleks (up there with the best ever Dalek stories in Doctor Who history), The Happiness Patrol, the not-well-liked-but-i-liked-it 25th anniversary tale Silver Nemesis, and the really creepy The Greatest Show In The Galaxy. The latter not bad for a story filmed in a tent, when they couldn’t use the BBC’s usual studio facilities.

No matter how many decades Doctor Who airs for, it continues to be one of the most popular series in the UK on its way to take over the entire world. Fun and dynamic adventures of the alien called the Doctor and their companions around time and space are equally as captivating for grownups as they are for kids, which grants Doctor Who a loyal audience.
However, the love that so many people hold for the show doesn’t mean they don’t acknowledge its weaknesses. Every era of the show has had its ups and downs, but for as long as creators were listening to fans’ concerns, the show could progress smoothly. There is, however, one strong flaw of Russell T Davies’ reign that the showrunner refuses to fix.

After a historic victory for the Labour Party, attention in the film and TV industries now turns to the future.
Following an all-too brief post-Covid boom era, it’s been a particularly tough couple of years for the sector, with the global recession, dual U.S. strikes and market contraction taking effect in a big way.
Labour’s Keir Starmer is about to select a new culture secretary after shadow elect Thangam Debbonaire’s shock loss to the Green Party, and the incumbent’s in tray will be full to bursting.
Here’s what Deadline believes the industry will be asking for.
Protect and modernize public broadcasters
The UK’s delicate public broadcasters have never been more in need of assistance. In this modern, fragmented era, and with competitors everywhere ranging from the streamers to YouTube to gaming, these bastions of British culture are trying to chart a path forwards.

Warning: spoilers for Doctor Who series 14 finale “Empire of Death”
We’ve had a bit of time to digest the finale of this year’s Doctor Who season. So while we sit twiddling our thumbs and waiting for Steven Moffat’s Christmas Special, it’s time to do what we Doctor Who fans do best – concoct elaborate theories about minor plot details while handing down authoritative judgements on what the showrunners should do next.
“Empire of Death” thoroughly understood its assignment as a Russell T Davies Doctor Who Finale, giving us spectacle, recurring characters, the death of the universe, and it least one massive gaping plot hole. It also had breadcrumbs aplenty for future seasons, including the mysterious Mrs Flood who might be Romana, or Clara Oswald (“Clever boy!”), or the Master’s new incarnation, but is almost certainly not the Rani (it’s never the Rani). And of course,...

Adapted from Colin O’Sullivan’s novel The Dark Manual, Sunny is the quintessential Apple TV+ series. Not just because it depicts the sort of future—filled with user-friendly devices housed in white cases with soft, round edges—that could have been designed by Steve Jobs himself, but because like so much of the streamer’s content, Sunny is a handsomely made series featuring A-list talent that amounts to a little less than the sum of its parts.
Created by Katie Robbins, the 10-episode series takes viewers to a near-future version of Kyoto where a grief-stricken woman named Suzie (Rashida Jones) is trying to process the loss of her husband, Masa (Nishijima Hidetoshi), and their son in a mysterious plane crash. A glimmer of hope arrives in the glowing digital display of a three-foot android, Sunny (Joanna Sotomura), that’s gifted to Suzie by the robotics company that her husband used to work for.

If there is one thing that remains consistent about Doctor Who, it is the way the writers always find something fun to add to the Tardis team dynamic. No matter who the Doctor is, they get a perfect companion to travel the galaxy with. What's even more exciting is that sometimes the companions come as a package deal.
Throughout series 14 of the series, Doctor Who explored the journey of Ncuti Gatwa's 15th Doctor and his companion, Ruby Sunday. In series 15, however, the show will introduce another character, played by Varada Sethu. Although no one knows her story yet, fans already have a pretty cool concept for Russell T Davies to consider.

We have decided to go through the not so long, but rich filmography of one of the biggest TV stars of the moment. Because all fans of House of the Dragon need more Matt Smith (even if they’re Team Green).
We've chosen nine of the actor's finest roles which show why he turned out to be such a charismatic Daemon Targaryen – or, on the contrary, prove that he can play completely different characters.
1. Womb, 2010
Hungarian director Benedek Fliegauf's sci-fi drama can easily claim the title of the strangest role in Matt Smith's career.
Set in the near future, a woman named Rebecca decides to clone her tragically deceased lover. She carries the child, gives birth and raises him as her own son. But as the boy grows, Rebecca's attitude towards him changes.
Womb is a rather peculiar adaptation of the ancient Greek myth of Oedipus, if the story...

Stdiocanal is delighted to announce the release of a brand-new 4K restoration of Ealing Studios’ classic Blitz set comedy drama, The Bells Go Down, that is available to own on Blu-Ray, DVD and Digital now. We’re giving you the chance to win a copy on Blu-Ray.
An important part of Ealing Studios’ legacy, The Bells Go Down, directed by Basil Dearden and produced by Michael Balcon, is a masterful and vividly authentic depiction of the work of the A.F.S (The Auxiliary Fire Service) that, in a revolutionary move, utilized genuine footage of London in the grip of the Blitz.
Starring the music hall hero Tommy Trinder in a rare straight role, a young James Mason, Philip Friend and even a future television Doctor in William Hartnell, the film captures the urgency of the era and serves as a rare historical document of a city in the grip of war.

Warning: contains spoilers for Doctor Who episode “Empire of Death”
While ‘The Melanie Bush Mysteries’, in the form of a new novel written by Bonnie Langford, are now a Doctor Who spinoff in their own right, one is also brewing in the TV show. The in-episode commentary for “Empire of Death” hints at a big secret in the backstory of Langford’s character, the former companion and present-day Unit employee Mel Bush.
In the series 14 finale, Mel is psychically targeted by Sutekh while she’s aboard the Remembered Tardis. Sutekh whispers inside Mel’s head and boasts of being able to find the living through “time and space and family”. Watching the episode with Langford and producer Vicki Delow, that last word prompted showrunner Russell T Davies to say: “What’s that family line, then, Mel? That’s a big secret.”
Okay, so that′s not so much hinting as...

Every TV Fanatic knows that there is always the good and the bad that comes with a strong first episode of a series because while the story likely hooks the audience immediately, maintaining that level into the following episode can be a hit or miss.
Not with Orphan Black: Echoes Season 1 Episode 2, though.
Once again, the show has delivered a perfectly paced story that doesn't feel bloated or convoluted despite introducing more characters, both old and new, while still managing to move the character-driven plot along.
If this episode deserves credit for one thing, it's its seamless shift in tone throughout.
A lot of shows try to adjust tone, thinking that it'll help with the pacing or atmosphere of the story to strengthen the themes and vibes or as a failsafe to keep audiences interested, but this tactic rarely works as it usually takes viewers out of the story.

David Tennant is the latest “Harry Potter” actor to be called out by J.K. Rowling for publicly supporting trans rights. It all started when Tennant, the “Doctor Who” favorite who also played Barty Crouch Jr. in “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire,” accepted a prize at the British LGBT Awards and called out Kemi Badenoch, the U.K. Minister for Women and Equalities who has said she would exclude trans women from certain spaces.
In his acceptance speech, Tennant said that he was “a little depressed” over getting an award for simply saying obvious facts like “everyone has the right to be who they want to be and live their life how they want to live it as long as they’re not hurting anyone.”
“It’s human decency,” Tennant added. “We shouldn’t live in a world where that is worth remarking on. However until we wake up...

The British prime minister has weighed in on an LGBTQ+ rights clash between actor David Tennant and top U.K. government minister Kemi Badenoch.
The Doctor Who star, who recently returned to the long-running program for its 60th anniversary, was accepting a prize for being a celebrity ally at the British LGBT Awards last week when he said he wished Badenoch, the country’s women and equalities minister, would “shut up,” adding that he hoped for a world in which she “doesn’t exist anymore.”
“If I’m honest, I’m a little depressed by the fact that acknowledging that everyone has the right to be who they want to be and live their life how they want to live it as long as they’re not hurting anyone else should merit any kind of special award or special mention, because it’s common sense, isn’t it?” Tennant said. “However,...

The popular Australian-Canadian documentary series “Stuff the British Stole,” which explores the controversial history of cultural artifacts taken by British colonialists, is set to be transformed into a high-stakes scripted heist drama. This ambitious adaptation aims to blend historical intrigue with contemporary storytelling, promising a fresh take on the complex issues of cultural repatriation and colonial legacy.
Warner Bros. International Television Production Australia and Wooden Horse are backing this new venture, which will consist of six one-hour episodes. Tosin Cole has already been part of two of the best-known sci-fi franchises around.
Sure, the American-born British actor admits his turn as starfighter pilot Lieutenant Bastian in “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” was perhaps a little “blink-and-you’ll miss it” (although it could have been a lot more — he got down to the final few auditioning for John Boyega’s role of Finn but “it just didn’t work out” and J.J. Abrams offered him this part instead). But in BBC cult series “Doctor Who,” however, across seasons 11 and 12, he played the main character of Ryan Sinclair, companion to Jodie Whittaker’s Time Lord. It all gives him some solid bragging rights.
“You know, I can tell my grandkids, ‘Your granddaddy was in this show!,’” he exclaims.
But now there’s another sci-fi that he hopes could also become something to tell the grandchildren about in years to come.

It all gives him some solid bragging rights.
“You know, I can tell my grandkids, ‘Your granddaddy was in this show!,’” he exclaims.
But now there’s another sci-fi that he hopes could also become something to tell the grandchildren about in years to come.

Warning: spoilers for Doctor Who finale “Empire of Death”.
The mystery of Ruby Sunday has been solved, and after teasing the parentage of Millie Gibson’s motherless Mancunian since she arrived in Doctor Who’s 2023 Christmas special, series 14 finale “Empire of Death” brought everything full circle. Ncuti Gatwa’s Fifteen had been helping Ruby try to trace her family tree all series, and now, we know who her mother is… a regular human woman with no supernatural or alien connections.
Doctor Who showrunner Russell T. Davies has now confirmed that the big twist of Ruby’s mother being a young woman called Louise Alison Miller (played by The Responder‘s Faye McKeever) was directly inspired by one of Star Wars’ most divisive reveals.
As soon as we first saw baby Ruby being dropped off at the church on Ruby Road, there were swirling fan theories, with the wildest suggesting she...

*Spoiler Warning — This review contains heavy spoilers for ‘Empire Of Death’*
With its Time Window based twists, mystery box openings, and big third act Sutekh reveal, ‘The Legend Of Ruby Sunday’ — despite an exposition-heavy opening — ended with the promise of a barnstorming finale ahead for Russell T. Davies’ first series back at the helm of Doctor Who. And it’s safe to say that it’s a promise well kept by ‘Empire Of Death’. Emotionally charged, narratively knotty, and cleverly self-referential, it’s a whirlwind hour of Who that sees Davies tip his hat to Avengers: Infinity War and The Last Jedi as he brings his own grand tale of heroes and villains to a blockbusting conclusion.
If ‘The Legend Of Ruby Sunday’ was a little slow starting, the same can’t be said of ‘Empire Of Death’. In a blistering opening that picks up right where last week’s episode left off,...

Warning: spoilers for Doctor Who series 14 episode “Empire of Death”.
Does it pain you, too?
In “Empire of Death”, just after Melanie Bush is revealed to be Sutekh’s latest victim, the Tardis does something it’s never done before – and according to Russell T Davies speaking on the BBC iPlayer in-episode commentary, something it will never do again.
“Bring me the Time Lord and the Child and their precious secret,” demands Sutekh. In response, a cloaked Harriet Arbinger pulls a lever at the console of the Tardis that’s currently parked in Unit Tower. As a result of her lever-pull, dead-Mel, Ruby and the Doctor are instantly transported across time and London, from the Department of Health in 2046 to Unit HQ in 2024.
Mel’s dead and so doesn’t remark on it, and the Doctor seems totally unfazed, but Ruby does the sensible thing and looks around her with an expression of ‘what?...

This spoiler-free review is based on all six episodes.
Movie superheroes are intrinsically tied to comic books. The language, the shape of the narrative arcs and the visuals are nearly always either inspired by or reacting against the genre as established in four colours. Even supposedly grounded and gritty takes like M Night Shyamalan’s Unbreakable use Bruce Willis’s poncho to signify a cape, with every shot framed to look like a comic book panel.
The most faithful screen realization of that imagery is usually the lavish CGI cinema spectacle, with TV all too often seen as its poor relation. The truth is, TV superheroism is now a genre all of its own, with its own tropes, rules and language that have for the most part left the comics far behind.

Potential spoilers ahead, as Russell T Davies has been chatting about one or two story threads from Doctor Who finale, Empire Of Death.
Over the weekend, the final episode of Doctor Who’s latest series – season one, or series 14, take your pick – aired. And whether you saw it in a cinema, on iPlayer, on Disney+ or on BBC One, the episode has got plenty of people chattering.
From this point onwards, we’re doing spoilers.
The end of Empire Of Death – and you can read our spoiler-filled review here – seemed to mark the end of Ruby Sunday’s story, as she bid farewell to the Doctor. Off he went, lonely again, to save the universe. But again, as we and many others noted, there’s little chance that’s the end of her story, with Millie Gibson widely expected back in the show. The number of actors who have appeared in Doctor Who over 60 years is in the thousands – in addition to the main characters, each episode has a supporting cast. Famous actors often drop in for a visit – for example, Stephen Fry, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost have appeared in various seasons.
The opposite has also happened – at the time of getting a role in Doctor Who, actors were not yet very famous, but later became real stars.
For example, Matt Smith, who played the Eleventh Doctor, now plays Daemon Targaryen in House of the Dragon, and Jenna Coleman, who played his companion, Clara Oswald, got the role of Johanna Constantine in The Sandman.
Clara's appearance in the first episode of the seventh season was like a breath of fresh air, and her participation in all subsequent episodes was an important part of the whole show. Jenna Coleman's main weapon was her charm,...

The Doctor Who season finale, ominously titled "Empire of Death," wrapped up with Sutekh's defeat and the Doctor parting ways with Ruby Sunday after she'd finally found her mother (you can find a full recap here).
While it made sense for Ruby to leave the Tardis behind so she could get to know her mother and track down her dad, many Whoniverse fans were shocked to see her time with the Doctor end so quickly. Doctor Who's beautiful ending wasn't anything like what I expected.
Doctor Who Season 1 Episode 8 did what Doctor Who does best, but some fans are bound to be highly disappointed.
Sutekh left a grim trail of death and destruction all over the universe, and the Doctor managed to set everything to rights, which should be cause for celebration. However, a season-long mystery ended without fanfare, and another one still hasn't been solved.
Is Sutekh Gone for Good This Time?
Fifty years ago, the Fourth Doctor thought he banished Sutekh forever, only for it to turn out that he had an unwelcome stowaway ever since who was using the Tardis to slowly destroy all life.
(The original episode is called "Pyramid of Mars" and is one of the best classic Who episodes. It's on Britbox and is well worth watching if you haven't already.)

He's an extraordinary director. He's actually such a natural leader. You feel like, 'Okay, we've got someone leading this thing that really knows what they want and is incredibly decisive.'"You just feel like you're in safe hands with somebody with those traits because he's gonna keep you on track when you try these big swings."The former 'Doctor Who' star added: "And then, his shots are all incredible. He's got the balance of it looking really cool, but it also being really actor focused.

Russell T Davies' return to Doctor Who has drawn praise and criticism alike, but the first season has now concluded and its finale, "Empire of Death," answered some big questions...all while leaving us with quite a few others.
As we saw last week, Sutekh - a classic Whoniverse villain - latched himself on to the Tardis. When the episode begins, he proceeds to use the Susan Triads he's spread throughout time and space (everywhere he and the Doctor landed) to spread his Dust of Death, killing everyone.
However, Sutekh has grown obsessed with learning the secret of Ruby's mother and, rather than kill her and the Doctor, he briefly allows them to escape.

Doctor Who signs off until Christmas – and here’s our spoiler-packed review of the series 14 finale, Empire Of Death.
