Artists for a New South Africa (Ansa) was founded in 1989 by Alfre Woodard, Danny Glover, Mary Steenburgen, Blair Underwood, Cch Pounder and friends to support the quest to end apartheid.
Since its inception, Ansa has raised and granted over nine million dollars to effective African nonprofits, shipped more than 20 tons of books and medical supplies to poor communities and provided comprehensive, ongoing care to over 3,500 AIDS orphans for the last eight years. Ansa continues to work in the U.S. and Africa to combat HIV/AIDS, advance human rights, preserve the legacy and values of the struggle against apartheid and the brave men and women who led it, and build bonds between our nations through arts, culture and the shared pursuit of social justice.

In Patricia Highsmith’s novel “The Talented Mr. Ripley,” Dickie Greenleaf’s father asks Tom if he’s ever read Henry James’ novel “The Ambassadors.” The reference is a sly one; James’ 1903 book is about a man sent from the Northeast to Paris to bring back a wayward son. That’s Tom’s mission, as well, though his European transformation is starkly different from James’ Lewis Lambert Strether, who ultimately returns to America wiser but sadder.
Tom intends no such return, and who could blame him when he sets up house in a palazzo as magnificent as the one in Steven Zaillian’s Netflix adaptation “Ripley.” “Who died?” his frenemy Marge (Dakota Fanning) quips when she first sees it; the answer is, of course, Dickie Greenleaf, but Tom pretends it was the aunt who raised him.
“In 2005, I did the film ‘Casanova,’ directed by Lasse Hallström,” “Ripley” production designer David Gropman told IndieWire.

Idris Elba fights a lion. This is what Beast promises, and this is what Beast delivers. No more. No less. The purity of it — the bald-faced simplicity! — is sort of beautiful.
This is where we are in the cursed summer of 2022. We quaver with existential ennui as the planet tries to throw us off with pandemics, heatwaves, wildfires, landslides, dust storms, droughts and floods. But we can cheer in a whistling-past-the-graveyard way as Idris Elba punches a prodigious pissed-off pussycat in the, well, puss, as if to say, “Not today, Mother Nature! Not today!”
To be fair to the lion, he is absolutely correct to be pissed off: poachers killed his whole family, and tried to kill him too, so he is out for revenge. All homo sapiens are in his sights. You may want to root for the lion instead. We humans are only getting what we deserve.

The impressive cast of American Horror Story Season 10 continues to expand.
Per TMZ, the latest addition is Paris Jackson.
The outlet did not shed any light on who she will be playing, but given that FX typically keeps AHS under wraps until transmission, it makes sense.
Co-creator Ryan Murphy has been dropping casting details throughout the long hiatus between seasons, and he has yet to respond to the report from TMZ.
Murphy did recently reveal that American Horror Story Season 10 would be titled "Double Feature" and would feature two mini-seasons.
Jackson's involvement is said to be in an episode in the second half of the mini-season, meaning that we probably have some time to wait before she enters the AHS universe.
What's more, the same report also claims that Emma Roberts will be making her grand return to the franchise during the tenth season.

This year, the motion picture academy achieved its five-year goal of doubling the number of women among its membership. In all, 819 film professionals were invited to become part of the organization that hands out the Oscars. Compare this intake to the totals of the previous five years: 842 in 2019; a record 928 in 2018; 774 in 2017; 683 in 2016; 322 in 2015; and 271 in 2014.
While Academy Awards nominees are automatically eligible for consideration, the rest of the candidates must go through a fairly cumbersome process. A candidate must meet certain branch specific requirements before even being eligible.
For example, actors must “have a minimum of three theatrical feature film credits, in all of which the roles played were scripted roles, one of which was released in the past five years, and all of which are of a caliber that reflect the high standards of the Academy.” For writers, directors and producers they need have just two of these credits.

Contrary Mercenary: Hargrave’s Debut Holds Steady with Routinely Staged Action
There’s a rich, albeit somewhat underappreciated tradition of notable stuntmen who segue into the director’s chair, some who have managed to steer iconic classics, others who have formatted a serviceable career on bigger B-movies in recent years, like Ric Roman Waugh (Felon; Snitch; Angel Has Fallen), or even marched into art-house territory (Nash Edgerton with Spider or the broadly comedic Gringo). Peter Rabbit hit theaters in February 2018 as a hybrid live-action/CGI franchise reboot that injected the classic stories of Beatrix Potter with contemporary energy. The result was a film that – akin to the stealthy precision of Peter in Farmer McGregor’s garden – quietly banked $115 million domestically, totaling $351.2 million globally, and was even the U.K.’s top family film of 2018, out-grossing Pixar’s Coco.
Consequently, it didn’t take Sony Pictures long to consider Peter Rabbit 2, giving it the official greenlight and a 2020 release date; a move made just one month after the original’s release. Indeed, main cast members such as the voice of the larcenous lepus himself, James Corden, as well as Domhnall Gleeson and Rose Byrne, are set to return, as will director Will Gluck, who, just as with the first film, wrote the script with Patrick Burleigh.

Hillary Clinton has said that “nothing was off limits” with regards to Hulu’s four-part documentary series on her life and 2016 Presidential Campaign but admitted that the process was “intense”.
Former Secretary of State Clinton kicked off Hulu’s day at the Winter TCA press tour with a candid interview about the doc, alongside director Nanette Burstein, touching on how the film came about, what she hopes people learn from it as well as her thoughts on attending the Sundance and Berlin Film Festivals.
Clinton admitted that the film didn’t start off as it ended, it was originally set up as a more traditional campaign documentary but added that she was “very impressed” with Burstein, who told her that she wanted to create a “bigger story” that was “part of the arc of women’s history”.

We’ve got more Spaghetti western action from Guest Reviewer Lee Broughton — the more obscure they become, the more fanciful the concept. This creative 1968 entry foregrounds a gothic vibe and employs imagery and narrative devices that Lee says would fit well in a horror movie. Italo western fans know the regular actors Fernando Sancho, Femi Benussi and Aldo Sambrell, who star alongside Lang Jeffries and future Pedro Almodóvar star Marisa Paredes.

A mathematical calculus goes into attending a movie star tribute. Truth is, most people would rather be home in their pajamas on a Friday night. So why turn up in black tie for salty Beverly Hilton salmon at the American Cinematheque Awards?
If you’re a big enough name, you don’t have to. “Wonder Woman” director Patty Jenkins, who also helmed Charlize Theron’s Oscar-winning “Monster,” and Theron’s “Bombshell” costars Nicole Kidman and Margot Robbie, delivered video tributes, along with Tom Hanks, who starred with Theron back in 1996 in “That Thing You Do!” “The more famous people Skyped in,” observed Seth Rogen, who showed up to present Theron with the 33rd American Cinematheque Award.
Here’s why these Hollywood folks agree to participate in these fundamentally fake events.

Tom Hanks plays Fred Rogers in potential Oscar contender “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood.

Dogwoof has boarded Lauren Greenfield’s “The Kingmaker,” about Imelda Marcos, the former first lady of the Philippines. The hotly anticipated feature doc delves into the disturbing legacy of the Marcos regime and Imelda’s attempts to aid her son’s political career. It will have its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival and then screen at Toronto.
London-based Dogwoof will sell “The Kingmaker” internationally. In the U.S. it is with premium cabler Showtme, which plans a theatrical release this fall.
The film is an intimate study of Imelda Marcos. As the wife of Ferdinand Marcos, who ruled the Philippines for more than 20 years, some of it under martial law, the first lady was noted for her ostentatious displays of wealth, including her vast collection of expensive designer shoes. “Stitch Head” will be a stereoscopic 3D animated feature directed by Toby Genkel, co-director –alongside Reza Memari– of the successful “A Stork’s Journey,” a German production from Ulysses Filmproduktion which secured a U.S. release through Grindstone and Lionsgate, and was sold by Global Screen.
“Stitch Head” is a family entertainment adventure-comedy intended for mainstream audiences. According to its producers, it’s a fun take on the Frankenstein myth, where the monsters are the good guys, and the humans are scary.

Amazon Studios chief Jennifer Salke made it clear on Wednesday that big changes are coming to the company’s struggling film business.
Less than a week after Dan Fogelman’s “Life Itself” flopped, the executive moved quickly to stabilize her film team and to encourage the faltering division to start developing more commercial fare. As part of that push, Salke promoted Julie Rapaport to co-head of the film division and tasked her with producing bigger-budget films that will appeal to broader tastes. The restructure puts a band-aid on the “Life Itself” debacle and echoes the same marching orders given to the TV division last year from Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos himself: Deliver hits.
Indeed, the pressure is on for a division that’s been operating in limbo for the better part of a year. The ouster of Salke’s predecessor Roy Price, an eccentric executive who was fired after being accused of sexual harassment,...

“The Female Persuasion” centers on Greer Kadetsky, a college student who is groped at a fraternity party and becomes emboldened to speak up for women’s rights. But her assailant turns out to be a serial abuser and her university fails to take action. In addition to Greer, Wolitzer’s book follows several other characters, including Zee, a fellow student with an activist streak, and Faith Frank, a feminist icon. Reviews for the book were sterling, with The Guardian praising it as “warm and witty, and necessary.”

Slowly but surely, Rambo 5 is finally – finally – beginning to fall into place.
Yes, casting is now officially underway for Sylvester Stallone’s action sequel (codenamed Rambo: Last Blood), in which his beefed-up John Rambo will be coming up against the Mexican cartel.
He won’t be doing so alone, mind you, as the titular hero will be currying favor from an unnamed member of the press as he seeks to dismantle the dangerous trafficking ring responsible for kidnapping his friend’s daughter. Imagine Taken, except on steroids. But who will be calling the shots from behind the camera for the iconic action star’s new effort?
Though some thought that Stallone himself may take on that duty, we’re now hearing that Rambo 5 has tapped Get the Gringo and Narcos director Adrian Grunberg for the job. Given his work and experience with those two aforementioned projects, he seems...

Amazon Prime Video has confirmed that several of its original series will be debuting new episodes on the streaming service in August, including the first season of “Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan.” John Krasinski, who is red-hot following the success of his winter hit “A Quiet Place,” takes on the role of the CIA spy that has been played on the big screen by Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford, Ben Affleck and Chris Pine.
Likewise, there will be plenty of movies making their first appearances on Amazon Prime Video including the action comedy “Gringo,” which stars David Oyelowo as a businessman who unwittingly becomes involved with a Mexican drug cartel.
Unlike Netflix, Amazon does not disclose the shows and movies leaving the service in any given month. We’ve done some digging and unearthed a few titles that will be exiting Amazon Prime Video in the first week of August. News...

From me, the “trash” moniker is high praise. These are movies that are not appreciated by the greater culture — none have earned a Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes — but which instead are B-style movies that are more concerned with delivering feels, thrills and titillation than with “respectability.” For me, this is the good stuff — the best of Hollywood’s delightful blue collar flicks.
12. “Proud Mary” — This is the story of a depressed assassin (Taraji P. Henson) who wants to get out of the life but is just too damn tired to take the initiative. It’s a weird story for a movie, but one that is probably the most relatable movie about a hitman ever.
11. “The Hurricane Heist” — This one is surprisingly topical. It’s got climate change, economic anxiety, corrupt trigger-happy cops, and a situation too dire for anyone not in the immediate area to be able to help.

Exclusive: Paris Jackson is continuing to make inroads on her acting career, and might even be doing a little singing to boot. She has landed a co-starring role in The Space Between, an indie comedic drama starring Kelsey Grammer and Jackson White. Rachel Winter, who produced the Oscar-nominated Dallas Buyers Club, is directing the pic being described as a love letter to music and revolving around the record industry. Shooting is now underway in Los Angeles.
The film, penned by Will Aldis, is set during the mid-1990s L.A. music scene. It centers on wannabe record exec Charlie Porter (White) who, struggling to get out of the mail room, is tasked with forcing forgotten rock star Micky Adams (Grammer) out of his contract at his longtime label.
Jackson will play Cory, Charlie’s love interest and a sultry singer desperate for her big break.
