Great indie numbers this weekend as Anora turned out highest per-screen-average of 2024 at $90k on six screens for a $540k gross. We Live In Time, the best platform expansion of the year, grossed $4.2 million on 956 screens in week 2 for a $4.5 million cume. Newcomers Union and The Line fared well on one screen each, as did Goodrich on about 1,000.
“We’re incredibly excited about this weekend’s record-breaking results and the fantastic critical and audience response to Sean Baker’s Palme d’Or-winning film Anora. Baker is a singular director who truly understands the power of the theatrical experience and how important it is for films to be seen in the theater,” Neon said. “With Mikey Madison in her unparalleled performance as Anora, and the film’s strong awards potential, there’s no doubt it will continue to captivate a broad audience as we move into the fall.”

Filmmakers and distributors of awards-hopefuls have until Nov. 4 to submit their category preference — drama versus musical or comedy — to the Golden Globes organization, which reserves the right to overturn any classification that it finds egregiously inaccurate.
Some of this year’s cases are inarguable — for instance, Netflix’s Emilia Pérez, in which characters spontaneously burst into song, is clearly a musical (if not a comedy), and A24’s The Brutalist, in which an immigrant faces all sorts of harrowing hurdles, is clearly a drama. There are, however, also plenty of close-calls, about which many have made assumptions, but, in most cases, not confirmed.
The Hollywood Reporter has been working the phones and can now report which way almost every contender is breaking. This intel is, of course, subject to change prior to Nov. 4, and to being overturned by the Globes thereafter — but it is current as of this writing.

Well, 2024 just got its new adorable mascot thanks to “The Legend of Ochi.”
The upcoming A24 indie fantasy adventure film teased a creature that looks eerily similar to Grogu Aka Baby Yoda-slash-“Gremlins” character Gizmo as a central figure in the coming-of-age tale.
Writer/director Isaiah Saxon makes his feature debut with “The Legend of Ochi” after helming music videos for Björk, Grizzly Bear, Dirty Projectors, and Kanye West. Saxon is also the co-founder of the animation studio Encyclopedia Pictura.
“The Legend of Ochi” is based on Saxon’s own characters and screenplay. The film tells the story of a young girl (Helena Zengel) who runs away from home and learns to communicate with an elusive animal species known as Ochi, hence the title.
Finn Wolfhard, Emily Watson, and A24 staple star Willem Dafoe round out the cast.

As is the case with most below-the-line Oscar categories, bigger equals better when it comes to Best Production Design. The more lavish the sets, the more accurate the period detail, the more extravagant the designs, the more likely your film will win an Academy Award. Formerly known as Best Art Direction/Set Decoration, this prize goes to the production designer and set decorator, leaving the poor art directors on the outside looking in; perhaps that accounts for the title change. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2025 Oscar predictions for Best Production Design.)
Like Best Costume Design, this award rarely corresponds with Best Picture. Before “The Shape of Water” prevailed in both categories in 2018, the last to line-up was “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” in 2004. Often, the winner of this race hasn’t even been nominated for the top prize, as was the case with “Memoirs of a Geisha...

If you want to win an Oscar for Best Costume Design, it’s best to pick a project for which you can create frilly dresses from a bygone era. Since its introduction at the 1948 Academy Awards, this category has favored period pictures, including the 2024 winner “Poor Things.” (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2025 Oscar predictions for Best Costume Design.)

By the way, none of those films even competed for Best Picture. Indeed, only 20 Best Picture champs also won this award; the last to do so was “The Artist” in 2012.

In a weekend of wide releases, indies included, A24’s Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh-starring We Live In Time popped on five screens with the third best limited opening of the year after Yorgos Lanthimos’ Kinds Of Kindness and Jason Reitman’s Saturday Night.
The romance by John Crowley grossed $225.9k opening weekend for a per-screen average of $45.9k. We Live in Time is looking at an estimated $225k for the four-day holiday frame (Monday is Indigenous Peoples Day/Columbus Day in the U.S.) for a $51k PSA.
The film, which world premiered at TIFF last month, had multiple sold-out Q&As in LA this weekend and strong exit polls in both opening markets (NY/LA). Limited national expansion next week before going wide on 10/25. It’s a non-linear look at a years-long relationships and marriage.

At six of the last 11 Oscars, Best Cinematography has gone hand-in-hand with Best Director: Emmanuel Lubezki and Alfonso Cuaron for “Gravity” (2014); Lubezki and Alejandro G. Will that trend hold true this year? (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2025 Oscar predictions for Best Cinematography.)
The academy usually regards award-winning cinematography as pretty pictures within an epic technical feat of filmmaking. While great lighting and framing are laudable on their own, having a movie that looks like it was difficult to shoot goes a long way to snagging an Oscar. The State of the Race
Similar to two years ago, the current race for the Best Actor Oscar has four names that seem to have their nominations locked in, with that fifth nomination slot up for grabs.
The Venice premiere of Luca Guadagnino’s “Queer” confirmed suspicions that Daniel Craig could be a major contender this year, but the real surprise from that same festival was just how much Brady Corbet’s “The Brutalist,” and by virtue its lead Adrien Brody, really has a shot at becoming an Academy Awards frontrunner across categories.

While the Best Supporting Actress Oscar is often awarded to an ingenue, like the 2022 winner Ariana DeBose (“West Side Story”), it can also be a way to reward a more seasoned performer. In 2024, Da’Vine Joy Randolph (“The Leftovers”) won on her first nomination A year earlier Jamie Lee Curtis had reaped her first Oscar bid at age 64 and prevailed for “Everything Everywhere All at Once.” In 2021 Youn Yuh-jung, who is renowned in her native South Korea, won at age 73 for her first English film, “Minari.” And in 2020, the academy honored past nominee Laura Dern who finally took home an Oscar for her scene-stealing performance in “Marriage Story.” (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2025 Oscar predictions for Best Supporting Actress.)

Before Bong Joon-Ho’s “Parasite” swept the 2020 Academy Awards, Cj Entertainment, the South Korean production and distribution company behind the film, were not planning such a big entry into the Hollywood mainstream. In fact, prior to this success, they were trying to shop a potential English-language remake of the 2003 Korean cult favorite “Save the Green Planet!” on an indie scale similar to the original. As reported on by The Hollywood Reporter, while speaking at the 2024 Busan International Film Festival at a forum on Navigating the New Paradigm, head of Cj Enm’s film division, Jerry Ko admitted that despite trying carry on the homespun spirit of the original, attaching talent like Yorgos Lanthimos, Ari Aster, Emma Stone, and Jesse Plemons has ballooned the project, now retitled “Bugonia,” into something bigger than he ever expected.

When Cj Entertainment, the production team behind Jang Joon-hwan’s Save the Green Planet, got the idea of remaking the 2003 cult Korean sci-fi comedy, they didn’t expect it to get so big.
This was before the release of Bong Joon-ho’s multi-Oscar winner Parasite, before Korean cinema exploded worldwide and before Cj Entertainment became one of the biggest global production outfits with its 2022 acquisition of Endeavor Content (now Fifth Season).

“We started out with the belief that the film’s concept was ahead of its time and that [maybe we] could make an indie movie, but as we traveled around Hollywood, we realized that there were many hidden fans of the original film.

The European Film Academy has announced that documentaries and animated features will now be considered for the European Film prize at its annual awards.
The category had previously only included fiction films. “The aim of this change is to better reflect the fact that documentaries and animated feature films are an essential part of European cinema culture, adding much to its great diversity,” a press release states. “Both documentary and animated films come in a plethora of genres, storytelling traditions and narrative forms, for any audience.”
The change is effective starting this year. The 37th European Film Awards are set to take place on Dec. 7 in Lucerne, Switzerland.

An array of big name talent has joined Elle Fanning in “Rosebush Pruning” from “Motel Destino” and “Firebrand” director Karim Aïnouz for Mubi, The Match Factory and Fremantle company The Apartment.

The production of Happy Gilmore 2 is underway and while fans of the first may wait in anxious anticipation, Sandler himself expressed an excitement about being back on the greens. “The idea that me and my buddy Tim Herlihy had and the more we talked about it and scene to scene worked on it, it built, and we feel very strong about the movie itself,” Sandler said. “We’re happy where it’s at and this is an exciting time for us. I don’t know how all of a sudden our brains said, ‘Let’s do that.’ It just kind of happened.”
One fan who is ecstatic about being involved with the project is Margaret Qualley. The actress who can be seen in Kinds of Kindness and The Substance proclaimed that she “can die happy now” after landing a part in the film. However, according to The Hollywood Reporter,...

Margaret Qualley is absolutely on fire in 2024 with standout roles in Drive-Away Dolls, Kinds of Kindness, and The Substance. But the sad part is she can’t share all this joy and success with her family for some pretty obvious reason and that is because of the glaring nude and violent themes of her films

In a recent chat with Jimmy Fallon, she revealed a person was more shocked and scared to see her in the Demi Moore movie, The Substance, even more than her parents.

U.K.-French film company Alief has boarded supernatural drama “Horizonte” by Colombia’s César Augusto Acevedo, winner of the 2015 Cannes Camera d’ Or for his debut feature “Land and Shade” (“La tierra y la sombra”). “Horizonte” is Acevedo’s sophomore feature, which had its world premiere at the 49th Toronto Film Festival in early September.
“We have been fans of Cesar Augusto since his first film, ‘Land and Shade,’” said Alief’s Miguel Angel Govea who described “Horizonte” as a “solid story of regret and redemption.”
“We were drawn by Acevedo’s lyrical screenplay, mesmerizing visuals and the standout performances by Chile’s grande dame, Paulina Garcia (Sebastian Lelio’s ‘Gloria’) and Colombian leading man Claudio Cataño, who stars in Netflix’s upcoming ‘One Hundred Years of Solitude,’” said Govea who said that Alief first eyed the drama at the 2024 Toulouse Cinélatino Films in Progress 43 where it won the...

Coralie Fargeat’s “The Substance” (Mubi) opens in 1,949 U.S./Canada theaters this week. That’s not unusual for a genre film, but it also won best screenplay at the Cannes Film Festival and its distributor is the theatrical division of niche streamer Mubi.
In the year 2024, wide is the new platform. “Conclave” (Focus), “Megalopolis” (Lionsgate), or “The Apprentice” (Briarcliff) will also go wide between now and the end of October. Pre-covid, they would most likely debut in a few New York and Los Angeles theaters.
“The Substance” isn’t a hard sell for a wider release. There’s strong advance interest among cinephiles for the original and gory body-horror story starring Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley. However, it’s a first for Mubi.
Launched as a streaming site, Mubi expanded into the U.S. theatrical market in 2016 with very limited releases for films like “The Happiest Day in the Life of Olli Maki.

Kinds of Kindness director Yorgos Lanthimos explained why he chose to structure the movie as a triptych fable.
The latest movie from the Poor Things director is structured as a triptych fable where he assembles a star-studded cast, led by Emma Stone, Willem Dafoe, Jesse Plemons, and Margaret Qually, playing different characters in three unique stories loosely connected by similar themes.

On September 1, The Brutalist premiered at the Venice International Film Festival. The “wildly ambitious” epic historical drama received a 13-minute standing ovation, with critics calling it a “masterpiece” and the “next Godfather.” The most exciting part of the film for some? Taylor Swift’s ex-boyfriend stars in it. In Joe Alwyn’s most acclaimed role to date, The Brutalist confirms that the 33-year-old is truly a star on the rise.

Yesterday, we posted a poll asking readers what they thought was the best summer 2024 movie. By a landslide, the winner was Deadpool & Wolverine, but the runner-up was George Miller’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, which was an infamously giant flop earlier this summer. In this case, the box office result didn’t do justice to the quality of the film itself – at least according to us here at JoBlo. But Furiosa wasn’t the only good movie that came out this summer that get enough love.
Here are five underrated summer 2024 movies:

Our top pick this week is five-time Academy Award nominee Yorgos Lanthimos’ black comedy “Kinds of Kindness,” which is now streaming on Hulu. It’s Lanthimos’ third collaboration with Emma Stone, after “The Favourite” and “Poor Things.” It’s unlikely to make as strong a showing at the Academy Awards as those two, but that’s pretty much by design, as the film’s anthology structure and darkly absurdist tone make it not the kind of thing that wins Oscars. Jesse Plemons did win Best Actor at Cannes, though, so he could be a longshot contender in that category, especially at the Golden Globes.
The film consists of three loosely connected stories about people experiencing various forms of severe distress. In addition to Stone and Plemons, the cast includes Willem Dafoe, Margaret Qualley, Hong Chau, Joe Alwyn, and Mamadou Athie.

“Kinds of Kindness” is a movie directed by Yorgos Lanthimos starring Emma Stone, Jesse Plemons and Willem Dafoe. With Margaret Qualley, Hong Chau and Mamoudou Athie.
The ever-ingenious Yorgos Lanthimos returns to the cinematic arena, accompanied by his muses, actress Emma Stone and actor Willem Dafoe, to once again defy the norms, provoke the audience, and present us with a feast for the senses on both aesthetic and narrative fronts.
This film is constructed like a disassembled jigsaw puzzle, leaving it to the audience to piece together the chaotic fragments of characters from a collective psyche that seems to lack self-awareness. “Kinds of Kindness” is not an easy watch and certainly isn’t tailored for everyone. It demands viewers to abandon conventional narrative expectations and embrace the notion that the natural coherence of cinema can be entirely inverted and turned on its head.

Crossing (Levan Akin)
There’s no description of Levan Akin’s Crossing that won’t make it sound like the kind of feel-good dramedy which would have taken Sundance by storm in 2006. It has all the key ingredients: an inter-generational friendship forged between a curmudgeonly retired teacher and a young burnout desperate to escape his hometown; an epic road trip where they come to understand each other more; and the older of the two confronting her internal bigotry as they search for her transgender niece. Above all, any description makes this sound like the worst kind of LGBTQ story, which we finally seem to have moved past as a culture––the story of queer people aimed firmly at a straight audience. Knowing I do what I do, you can imagine the kind of bizarre stuff I’d run into in films and shows. Some are a challenge, while some, like Lanthimos’ Poor Things, are an absolute joy to dive into despite their absurdist motifs concealing an undercurrent of simultaneously hopeful and morbid themes. But there’s another, rarer category of eccentric films that keep the audience at arm’s length, revealing its inner workings ever so slightly before washing any contemplation over with something distractingly weird. That’s the category of absurdist cinema I’d say Kinds of Kindness falls in. Lanthimos’s triptych anthology, which he co-wrote with Efthimis Filippou, is of a mood that has a distinct connection with the one character that is recurring in all three stories. But a due reminder before I jump in, Kinds of Kindness is more about the experience, almost like a performance...
