The Japanese make a lot of silly monster movies but you have to realize that they are making them for kids, not adult audiences.
"War of the insects" is a combination of "killer bugs" movie plus a spy story involving a missing US Air Force hydrogen bomb.
The comics at Cinematic Titanic do a great job of making jokes about the absurd plot and the ridiculous dialog, which is dubbed of course. It is always amusing when the translation is done by people who don't really know English very well.
Finally, this a movie with a MESSAGE. And the message is "War is bad." Now that is something a six-year old can relate to.
