Just days after the 2024 Primetime Emmys were handed out, we have the nominees for the 52nd International Emmy Awards. See the full list of 14 categories below.

The shows vying for the Drama Series prize are Australia’s The Newsreader, Argentina’s Yosi, the Regretful Spy, France’s Drops of God and India’s The Night Manager. Three of those countries also are in the running for the Comedy Series prize as Australia’s Deadloch, Argentina’s División Palermo, France’s Hpi — whose American remake High Potential premiered on ABC this week — battle South Korea’s Daily Dose of Sunshine.

Argentina also is in the running for the Arts Programming award with Virgilio, alongside Poland’s Piano Forte, the UK’s Robbie Williams and Japan’s Who I Am Life. Winners will pick up their hardware November 25 at the International Emmy Awards Gala in New York City.

It’s always Emmys time. With the Primetime Emmys wrapping on Sunday, and the News and Documentary Emmys set to announce their winners next week, the International Emmys have also entered the conversation — revealing on Thursday the nominations for the 2024 International Emmy Awards.

The International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences announced a roster of 56 International Emmys nominees across 14 categories and spanning 21 countries. Leading the pack was the United Kingdom, with nine nominees, followed by France with seven and Brazil with five.

“Every year the international television community competes to be recognized on the International Emmys’ much coveted global stage,” said International Academy president/CEO Bruce L. Today, BritBox and the BBC announced the cast of Riot Women, the brand-new drama series from the multi-bafta award-winning writer Sally Wainwright.

Leading the cast and the Riot Women band are Joanna Scanlan as Beth, Rosalie Craig as Kitty, Tamsin Greig as Holly, Lorraine Ashbourne as Jess, and Amelia Bullmore as Yvonne.

Anne Reid (The Sixth Commandment) will play Nancy, Holly and Yvonne’s mother, with Sue Johnston (The Royle Family) as Jess’s Aunt Mary. Peter Davison (Doctor Who), Claire Skinner (Outnumbered), and Angel Coulby (Merlin) also join the cast.

Joanna Scanlan and Tamsin Greig have been confirmed to star in Sally Wainwright’s new BBC and Britbox drama “Riot Women.”

“Riot Women” is the new drama from “Happy Valley” creator Wainwright, about a group of middle-aged women who decide to enter a talent contest by forming a punk-rock band. After writing their first song, however, they realize they have plenty to say and now, the means to say it.

Scanlan, who is currently appearing in “Slow Horses” and “A Very Royal Scandal,” will play Beth while Greig, who’s known for “Black Books” and “Sexy Beast,” plays Holly. Joining them will be Rosalie Craig (“Moonflower Murders”) as Kitty, Lorraine Ashbourne (“Sherwood”) as Jess and Amelia Bullmore (“The Buccaneers”) as Yvonne.

A Very Royal Scandal, which launches in a fortnight, stars Michael Sheen as the disgraced Prince with Ruth Wilson playing the role of his interviewer Emily Maitlis.

A Very Royal Scandal is a three-part TV series as opposed to Scoop, the Netflix feature that starred Rufus Sewell and Gillian Anderson in the lead roles. It is the third in the A Very… series that Amazon has previously co-produced with the BBC, although this one will only air on Prime Video. Unlike Scoop, Maitlis is involved with this one as an EP.

In the trailer, Wilson’s Maitlis can be seen pursuing the story that would make her a global household name and destroy the Prince’s reputation in a pivotal moment in British history, which saw him buckle under questions around his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein and make a sea of humiliating utterances.

Exclusive: The BBC is developing a drama series about the Piper Alpha disaster, one of the most catastrophic offshore oil incidents of all time and the worst in terms of lives lost.

The drama comes around 35 years after the disaster, which took place off the coast of Scotland on a North Sea oil rig that at the time accounted for around 10% of the North Sea’s oil and gas production.

The BBC, Scottish producer Stv Studios and writer James Wood are in the research phase, we are told, and the show is yet to go into production or be given the green light. Banijay UK boss Patrick Holland, It’s a Sin exec Nicola Shindler and BBC iplayer/channels chief Dan McGolpin all roundly agreed that the amount of work currently in the ether is unsustainable for the number of indies when questioned during this morning’s big panel at the Edinburgh TV Festival.

“You can’t sugarcoat it,” said McGolpin. “There aren’t enough money and hours to keep everyone alive.”

Holland said “in terms of sheer economics there are too many indies for the amount of hours,” while Shindler posited that “there are a lot of talented people who aren’t getting a look in.”

As the Olympic games commence this summer, Variety reports on a new upcoming film about an infamous world sports event. Comedy actor Steve Coogan is set to play former Ireland soccer manager Mick McCarthy along with the fast-rising and BAFTA-nominated Irish star Éanna Hardwicke (The Sixth Commandment, Lakelands), who will be portraying Manchester United and Ireland soccer legend Roy Keane, in the Irish movie Saipan. McCarthy and Keane would suffer a public falling out and this conflict will be the focus of the film.

Saipan will be helmed by directing duo Glenn Leyburn and Lisa Barros D’Sa. Leyburn and D’Sa have also worked together in the past on the critically acclaimed Irish comedy-drama Good Vibrations from 2013, as well as the romance Ordinary Love, which starred Liam Neeson and Lesley Manville from 2019. Exclusive: Banijay Rights has hired Passion Distribution’s Claire Douglas as part of a rejig of its marketing and comms team that sees Andrew Dickens taking over the division.

Douglas, who had led UK distributor Passion’s PR and marketing efforts for nearly nearly a decade, joins Banijay Entertainment’s sales division as Communications Manager. She exited Passion earlier this month and previously worked at A+E Networks UK, Warner Bros and Disney.

She’ll work closely with Dickens, who has been promoted from VP to SVP of Communications and Marketing to lead the marcomms unit. Dickens has been with Banijay’s sales division for three years, having previously been a TV industry trade journalist and communications officer for government.

His promotion comes after Banijay Rights’ long-serving marketing boss Steve Quirke exited at the end of March. However, we understand Dickens’ promotion isn’t a like-for-like replacement.

Fresh off his latest BAFTA win for The Sixth Commandment, Timothy Spall’s next project has been revealed.

The Harry Potter star is leading Death Valley with Welsh actress Gwyneth Keyworth (Black Mirror) for the BBC.

Written and created by Paul Doolan (Mammoth) and set in Wales, Death Valley follows the unlikely crime-solving partnership between eccentric national treasure John Chapel (Spall), a retired actor and star of hit fictional detective TV show Caesar, and disarming detective sergeant Janie Mallowan (Keyworth). Thrown together by the murder of John’s neighbor, John and Janie are an odd, yet hilarious duo with opposing instincts, and each week they get to the bottom of gripping murders.

“I’m really looking forward to teaming up with the brilliant Gwyneth Keyworth and the fantastically talented team of creatives and technicians on this new and unique comedy drama,” said Spall.

BBC Studios is producing and distributing, and filming will begin next month.

Matthew Macfadyen has won the BAFTA TV Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Succession.

The star, who plays the scheming executive Tom Wambsgams in Jesse Armstrong’s HBO drama, has twice before the award, once for Succession in 2022 and also for Criminal Justice in 2010.

He beat off competition from the likes of Jack Lowden for Apple TV+’s Slow Horses, Salim Daw for The Crown, Amit Shah for Happy Valley and Eanna Hardwicke for The Sixth Commandment.

Now, the main ceremony is taking place. This one is where all the big stars rock up as the acting categories are presented tonight in what is a live, televised ceremony broadcast from the Royal Festival Hall on London’s South Bank.

Exclusive: This Sunday’s BAFTA TV Awards will “celebrate and remember the power of storytelling” at a “challenging” time for the industry, according to the new chair of the 77-year-old body.

Speaking exclusively to Deadline in the days leading up to the London ceremony, Sara Putt, who replaced Krishnendu Majumdar last year, said the awards will partly act as a tonic against the bad times, allowing “a community to come together, network, and be creative and supportive of each other.”

She acknowledged that 2023 was a “challenging year for many in the industry, whether freelancers or small indies,” coming a few months after BAFTA research found one third are considering leaving.

“We [at BAFTA] have many roles to play and it is important when times are hard to celebrate and remember the power of storytelling,” Putt said.

Ali for their work on “Black Mirror: Demon 79” while British favourite Sally Wainwright was cited for “Happy Valley,” a critical darling over here in the UK. Sarah Phelps was also nominated for “The Sixth Commandment” while Emmy-winner Jesse Armstrong was recognized for his work on awards-juggernaut “Succession.”

Cillian Murphy obtained one of acting’s most coveted achievements when he won an Oscar for his leading role in “Oppenheimer.” But his award season run for the acclaimed Christopher Nolan film didn’t end with his big night at the Dolby Theater. The Irish actor went on to receive his home country’s highest acting honor on Sunday at the Irish Film and TV Academy Awards when he won the Lead Actor — Film category for “Oppenheimer.”

The ceremony honored the best Irish film and television of 2023, with Pat Collins’ “That They May Face the Rising Sun” winning Best Film. Other notable winners included Paul Mescal taking Supporting Actor for “All of Us Strangers” and Alison Oliver winning Supporting Actress for “Saltburn.”

Lies We Tell, about an orphaned teenage heiress in 19th-century Ireland who is forced to embrace the dark legacy of her family, led the nominations for the movie portion of the awards with 13 and went home with three. It was followed by That They May Face the Rising Sun, which took home the best film prize, and Double Blind, with 11 each. Rising Sun is an adaptation of John McGahern’s novel about passion, war and migration, while Double Blind is a horror film about an experimental drug trial that goes wrong.

The Oscar, BAFTA, Golden Globe and SAG award winner on Saturday night added perhaps a final statue to his flawless haul of honors for Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer,” when he was named best lead actor at the 21st Irish Film and TV Academy Awards.

Hannah Waddingham, Bella Ramsey, drama series Happy Valley and Squid Game: The Challenge were among the winners at the 2024 Royal Television Society program awards. The Rts unveiled the honorees in London on Tuesday evening.

The Sixth Commandment won the most awards with three, including for best limited series and best supporting actor Éanna Hardwicke. Comedy Extraordinary and drama Top Boy were among the other winners.

Waddingham was honored for her work as one of the hosts of the Eurovision Song Contest, while Ramsey won for their role in the prison anthology drama series Time.

The BBC led the winners across the more than two dozen award categories, being able to celebrate a total of 21 honors.

Last year, Kate Winslet and Kit Connor were among the Rts honorees. The organization last year also introduced several new awards categories.
