Vertical Entertainment has just sent over the trailer to their official Venice and TIFF selection — the tense thriller The Order. Justin Kurzel is in the director’s chair. Based on Kevin Flynn and Gary Gerhardt’s novel The Silent Brotherhood, The Order stars Jude Law (Closer, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow), Nicholas Hoult (Superman, Renfield, Mad Max: Fury Road), and Tye Sheridan (Ready Player One, X-Men: Apocalypse, Mud).
The official synopsis reads,
“For over a year, a series of bold daylight bank robberies and armored car heists leaves law enforcement baffled and the public panicked throughout the Pacific Northwest. As the attacks become increasingly violent, FBI agent Terry Husk (Jude Law) becomes convinced that the robberies are the work of a domestic terrorist gang that plan to use the loot to finance an armed uprising against the U.S. government.

It bears repeating that, in the olden days, back when televisions where 4x3 boxes beaming mostly black-and-white images into the living rooms of Americans, landing a regular role on a sitcom or hour-long drama wasn't considered a career coup in Hollywood. Making it in movies was still just about every working actor's goal, while television was a step down -- lucrative, steady, but hardly prestigious.
And worst of all, if you hung around one series for too long, you ran the risk of getting typecast.
This was very much on Pernell Roberts' mind when the Shakespearian trained actor was cast as Adam Cartwright, the oldest son of wealthy rancher Ben Cartwright (future Commander Adama and Alpo pitchman Lorne Greene), on "Bonanza." Handsome, eloquent and quite at home in front of a camera, Roberts had earned rave reviews as a stage performer (he won a Drama Desk Award in 1955 for his...

The critically acclaimed West End production of “Macbeth,” starring David Tennant and Cush Jumbo, is getting a cinema release across the U.K., U.S., Australia and other select international territories. How do you make a King Lear? Put the queen in a bikini!
This incredibly crafted joke was not, in fact, written by William Shakespeare himself — it’s a quip that Krusty the Klown cracked in The Simpsons Season 11 episode, “Guess Who’s Coming to Criticize Dinner?” shortly before the tough crowd roundly booed The Bard.
While the brainiac, bookish, Harvard-educated nerds of The Simpsons’ writing staff have made numerous references to and jokes about the works of Shakespeare over the course of the show’s 35 seasons and counting, it’s fair to say that the citizens of Springfield aren’t the world’s biggest admirers of the most famous dramatist in history — nor are some Simpsons fans, apparently.
Right now, various Twitter fandoms are clashing over the definition of the phrase “locked in,” with stans of every singer, sports star, religious movement, actor, military power or TV show...

Sir Edmund Hillary is reported to have said that the reason he and Tenzing Norgay climbed Mount Everest was “because it’s there.” Acting is not mountaineering (except maybe when someone’s making a movie about Everest), but longtime acting teacher Terry Knickerbocker has likened Daniel Craig’s post-James Bond career to tackling challenges not because he needs to but because they’re there. Knickerbocker founded his own studio to coach actors and has worked with Craig on multiple “Knives Out” films and on Luca Guadagnino’s “Queer,” which had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival on September 3.

Matt Smith is worried that “everything’s being dialed and dumbed down” in the entertainment world because of the rise of trigger warnings.
Speaking to The Times of London, the “House of the Dragon” star lamented at how trigger warnings are keeping the audience from having a visceral, unexpected reaction like “being shocked, surprised, stirred” – which he thinks is the whole point of stories.
“It’s Ok to feel uncomfortable or provoked while looking at a painting or watching a play, but I worry everything’s being dialed and dumbed down,” Smith said. “We’re telling audiences they’re going to be scared before they’ve watched something.”
He continued, “sn’t being shocked, surprised, stirred the point? Too much policing of stories and being afraid to bring them out because a climate is a certain way is a shame. I’m not sure I’m on board with trigger warnings....

If you think heavily armed white supremacists are some kind of new threat to America, you should take a look at The Order, a gripping, superbly made historical thriller about a neo-Nazi gang that terrorized the Pacific Northwest nearly four decades ago, robbing banks and armored cars to fund their plans for a full-scale insurrection.
A nail-biter from start to finish, Australian director Justin Kurzel’s bleak and brawny true story stars Jude Law as an FBI agent trying to take down the film’s titular faction, which he tracks over several years, from one hold-up and killing to the next. Backed by a cast that includes Nicholas Hoult, Tye Sheridan and Jurnee Smollett, The Order is the kind of tense reflection on American violence that Hollywood rarely puts on the big screen anymore. Jude Law, Nicholas Hoult, Tye Sheridan, Jurnee Smollett, and director Justin Kurzel, were among the team at The Order‘s Venice press conference this afternoon where they discussed the crime-drama’s resonance with extremism today.
The Order charts how a series of bank robberies and car heists frightened communities in the Pacific Northwest during the 1980s. It alights on a lone FBI agent (Law) who believes that the crimes were not the work of financially motivated criminals, but rather a group of dangerous domestic terrorists, namely the white supremacist gang known as The Order (led in the film by Hoult). The film explores the ensuing battle between law enforcement and the far-right group.
Hoult told the press how he and Law – adversaries in the film – didn’t speak or interact with each other for the first four weeks of filming in a bid to build distance between them. He was...

The cast of The Order went to some pretty dark places to tell a true story of American racism. The new film from Justin Kurzel (Macbeth, Assassin’s Creed) stars Jude Law, Nicholas Hoult, Tye Sheridan, Jurnee Smollett, and Zach Baylin, all of whom were in attendance for the film’s world premiere in competition at the 2024 Venice Film Festival.
Inspired by Kevin Flynn and Gary Gerhardt’s 1989 non-fiction book The Silent Brotherhood, the movie follows an FBI investigation into a series of bank robberies and car heists in the Pacific Northwest. A lone FBI agent, Terry Husk (Law) believes that the crimes are being committed by a group of dangerous domestic terrorists. Eventually, his investigation leads back to a white supremacist group centered on the charismatic leader Bob Mathews (Hoult).
Although set in the 1980s, Law spoke about the importance of the film for the current day, with far-right extremist groups on the rise worldwide.

Honestly, the theater kid in me pops up whenever I see characters exchanging props on screen and then acting differently. Well, if you have ever come across a stage production, then you might be able to understand what I am talking about here. For example, take a theater production of Macbeth with a solo actor in it. Now the same actor wears different props and costumes on screen to suggest his transformation from one character to another, and a similar thing took place in Netflix’s K-drama, The Frog, where we saw serial killer Ji Hyang-cheol’s cap passing on from one character to another. Though the transformation in Netflix’s K-drama isn’t as literal or emphasized as we generally see in theater, it is much more symbolic, which I am going to explore further.
Spoiler Alert
For Hyang-cheol, the cap acted like an invisible cloak. A prop that...

Australian film director Justin Kurzel has adopted fresh perspectives on directing after undertaking two recent documentary films. Kurzel directed Ellis Park, a documentary about musician Warren Ellis and the animal sanctuary he co-founded in Indonesia. He has also worked on the thriller The Order.
Kurzel found the experience of filming Ellis Park to be profoundly impactful. “Going there changed me, I was not the same person when I left,” he said afterward. Observing the sanctuary required Kurzel to adapt his methods. Rather than following a strict plan, he learned to let the people and animals guide the story organically. “I had to be open to what emerged,” Kurzel noted.
This experience shaped Kurzel’s approach to The Order. The film tells the true story of bank robberies in 1980s America. Though the settings contrasted drastically, Kurzel applied the same flexibility. He collaborated more with actors to allow scripts to freely evolve throughout production.

Straight off the plane from New York, where he is mid-production on the Netflix series “Black Rabbit,” director Justin Kurzel debuted his new documentary “Ellis Park” at the Melbourne International Film Festival.
“Ellis Park” follows the eventful life of composer Warren Ellis and the wildlife sanctuary he co-founded on the Indonesian island of Sumatra. Combining Ellis’ irreverent humor and unbounded creativity with the moving story of the sanctuary’s role as a home for animals rescued from the black market, “Ellis Park” is set to be one of the most impactful Australian documentaries of recent years.
Following the film’s premiere at Melbourne’s Astor Theatre, Kurzel said making the documentary has profoundly influenced his forthcoming productions. Alongside “Black Rabbit” these include “The Order” — a wintry thriller starring Jude Law, Nicholas Hoult, Tye Sheridan, Jurnee Smollett, and Marc Maron set to premiere at the Venice Film Festival — and the series...

The 1995 film "12 Monkeys" was one of the few times a Terry Gilliam film wasn't beset with chaos and production problems. Gilliam is notoriously unlucky — not to mention incredibly headstrong — so many of his features were only made after last-minute disasters, deaths, or other major catastrophes. One can see Gilliam's unluckiness in play in Keith Fulton's and Louis Pepe's 2002 documentary "Lost in La Mancha," which traced the director's first, stalled attempt to make "The Man Who Killed Don Quixote." Also, one doesn't need to be a deep-cut cineaste to know all about the issues Gilliam had with his 1983 sci-fi film "Brazil," a picture that was re-cut multiple times.
For "12 Monkeys," though, everything seemed to work out okay. Based on Chris Marker's 1962 short film "La Jetée," the film begins in 2035 after most of humanity has been killed by a lethal virus. Survivors were forced into underground prisons,...

When it comes to separating art from the artist, you might find yourself between a rock and a hard place—or perhaps between a director’s chair and a moral conundrum. Zoë Kravitz is no stranger to the fact that admiring Roman Polanski’s films is a bit controversial, to say the least.
In a recent Esquire profile, the Blink Twice writer/director tackled the elephant in the room: Can we keep loving the art that controversial figures create while still condemning their actions? Well, in Kravitz’s world, it’s all about the art, even if it means accepting that sometimes “somebody bad was involved in something good”.

Especially poignant was her defense of Roman Polanski’s work. After all, he directed cinematic treasures like Rosemary’s Baby and The Tenant, films Kravitz adores despite their creator’s not-so-favorable reputation.

Scottish actor Alan Cumming has played lots of notable roles in his career: the nerdy computer programmer in the James Bond film “GoldenEye”; the Master of Ceremonies in Sam Mendes’ 1990s revival of “Cabaret” on London’s West End and on Broadway; the flirty desk clerk in Stanley Kubrick’s “Eyes Wide Shut”; all the parts in a 2012 theater production of “Macbeth”; King James in “Doctor Who”; campaign manager Eli Gold in “The Good Wife”; and a 32-year-old man who goes back to secondary school in the documentary “My Old School,” in which Cumming does an uncanny job of lip-syncing a recording of the real subject, who declined to appear on camera.
None of this was preparation for “The Traitors,” the Peacock reality show in which Cumming struts through a Scottish castle in fabulous outfits and presides over a game in which contestants, many of them veterans of other reality shows,...

Though his personal tragedies and demons have sometimes overshadowed his work, there’s no denying the impact Oscar-winning director Roman Polanski has had on cinema.
Born in 1933 in Paris and raised in Poland, Polanski’s childhood was marked by tragedy when he was separated from his parents during the Holocaust. As a child, he escaped the Krakow ghetto after his mother was killed in an Auschwitz gas chamber. When the war ended, he was reunited with his father and returned home.
He turned to filmmaking as a student, making his directorial debut with the international hit “Knife in the Water” (1962), which earned an Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Language Film. His followup, the psychological thriller “Repulsion” (1965), was an even bigger hit, and he was soon drafted by Hollywood to direct the occult horror film “Rosemary’s Baby” (1968), which earned him a Best Adapted Screenplay bid.

Has one word ever decided an election?
It’s possible we’re about to find out. The word in question is “weird” — a term even a 5-year-old could understand, and one that’s proving extraordinarily effective in Kamala Harris’ bid to defeat Donald Trump in November.
It’s a word that since 1980 has skyrocketed in popularity, according to a graph on Google’s Ngram Viewer, which only accounts for usage until 2022. That line is going to jump even higher once it reaches 2024.
It all began with a casual insult tossed out by Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, and has since caught on like a viral wildfire. The “weird” label has proven so sticky and effective, it may have even played a significant role in Harris’ decision to choose Walz as her running mate. At their first joint appearance at a rally in Philadelphia on Tuesday, there it was again: “These guys are creepy and yes,...

The Emmy Awards grew up on March 7, 1955. For the first time, the ceremony was broadcast nationally on NBC. Steve Allen, the star of “The Tonight Show,” was the host of the 7th annual awards honoring the best of 1954 programming which was telecast from the Moulin Rouge nightclub on Sunset Boulevard.
One of the seminal live dramas of the 1950’s, Reginald Rose’s searing “12 Angry Men,” which aired on CBS “Studio One,” earned the most Emmys that evening winning with three. The taut drama about a jury of a dozen men decided the fate of a young man accused of murder starred Robert Cummings, Franchot Tone, Edward Arnold and Walter Abel. For years, only an incomplete kinescope of the show, which was adapted into the Oscar-nominated 1957 film, existed.
Finally, a complete copy of the show was discovered in 2003. Rose told me in a 1997 L.A. Times interview that he came up...

Yvonne Furneaux, the glamorous actress who had memorable performances in Michelangelo Antonioni’s Le Amiche, Federico Fellini’s La Dolce Vita and Roman Polanski’s Repulsion, has died. She was 98.
Furneaux died July 5 at her home in North Hampton, New Hampshire, of complications from a stroke, her son, Nicholas Natteau, told The Hollywood Reporter.

Daniel Craig left some rather large shoes to fill after he exited as James Bond with his final Bond film “No Time to Die” in 2021. Three years on and we are seemingly no closer to finding out who the new 007 is than we were right after that movie. But… the debate around who we think should be the next Bond rages on, with every film fan having their own thoughts on who would be best suited for the role.
Craig himself was a stark departure from the ultra-suave Pierce Brosnan before him, with Craig bringing more grit, brutality, and gruff vulnerability to the role. Will producer Barbara Broccoli go for the same type as Craig, will they revert back to the smoothness of a Brosnan-type, or will they go for something different entirely? Well, here’s an extensive list of 30 actors who could theoretically take up the mantle of 007 next.

Orson Welles first rose to fame with revisionist takes on William Shakespeare’s work, among them a 1937 theatrical production of Julius Caesar set in a fascist state and, a year earlier, Voodoo Macbeth, which relocated the plot of Macbeth to Haiti and featured an entirely black cast. His 1948 film adaptation of the play is similarly faithful in its use of the original text, with the actors going as far as to adopt thick highland brogues. The film likewise transposes Welles’s theatrical experimentations into cinematic terms, existing largely as a showcase for the auteur’s arcane, fussy expressionism, as well as the many cultural quirks borne of a peripatetic life. For example, in the opening scene in which Macbeth (Welles) meets the three witches, they make a facsimile of the lord out of clay, a voodoo-like touch that could be a subtle nod to Welles’s vaunted all-black stage production.

In the 3rd episode of House of the Dragon season 2, we saw Daemon Targaryen arriving at the gates of Harrenhal with his dragon, Caraxes. Now, dragons do give its rider a sense of power and authority. Yet, Daemon felt a sense of eeriness sending chills down his spine as soon as he stepped into Harrenhal. Some people said that they still heard the cries of King Harren and their sons, who were burned to the ground by Aegon the Conqueror, and their glorious castle turned to ruins. Even though nothing was left of Harrenhal, it still remained an important strategic point in the battle to come, which was why Daemon had to claim it, by hook or by crook.

What is the Shakespeare canon if not the ideal treasure trove of IP? Truancy laws mandate that students develop at the very least a passing familiarity with Romeo and Juliet, the highest-brow pop culture artifact nonetheless considered universally common knowledge, and the themes isolated in those lesson plans can be easily mapped onto present-day scenarios: the heedless forbidden passions of Romeo and Juliet, the topsy-turvy crushes of Twelfth Night, the power struggles of Hamlet, Macbeth, and Lear. When X2, the thrilling follow-up to X-Men (2000), burst into theaters in 2003, could anyone have predicted the everlasting impact it would leave on the superhero genre? Triumphantly applauded for its head-turning action sequences, compelling storyline, and strong script, Bryan Singer’s movie soared beyond mere entertainment to become a cultural touchstone.
Aside from its cinematic prowess, X2—starring Hugh Jackman & Alan Cumming—struck a deep chord with its empathetic nods to outcasts, teens, gays, and minorities. The latter’s praise for the film as one of the “gayest” projects he has worked on mirrors its nuanced approach, which co-writer David Hayter tackled with heartfelt intentionality, as he gladly shared in a recent TMZ interview.

Furthermore, X2’s underlying allegories of societal exclusion and the search for dignity & respect in adversity were deliberate strokes of writing genius, a meaningful allegory that even Ian McKellen could see from a mile away.

Alan Scarfe, the classically trained British Canadian actor known for his turns as bad guys in Double Impact and Lethal Weapon III and as Dr. Bradley Talmadge on the Upn sci-fi series Seven Days, has died. He was 77.
Scarfe died April 28 of colon cancer at his home in Longueuil, Quebec, his family announced.
Survivors include his son, actor Jonathan Scarfe (ER, Raising the Bar, Hell on Wheels, Van Helsing).
Born in England and raised in Vancouver, Scarfe portrayed the Romulans Tokath and Admiral Mendak on episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation in 1991 and 1993 and was another alien, the powerful Magistrate Augris, on a 1995 installment of Star Trek: Voyager.
“Science fiction on film and television, especially if you are playing some kind of alien character with fantastic make-up, is great for actors with a strong stage background,” he said in a 2007 interview. “The productions need that kind of size and intensity of performance.

A directorial debut programmed into the main Cannes competition is typically viewed with suspicion, if not overlooked altogether. Very rare is that lightning-in-a-bottle moment like the arrival of Son of Saul some years back. Typically, the only conversation these debuts generate is the critical debate as to why they’ve been elevated to the top of the pile when there are far more striking debuts buried deeper within the festival. This often means that accomplished films are overlooked and underappreciated by those on the ground, who may be subconsciously comparing a striking feature to the work of more established names it’s competing against for the Palme d’Or, approaching each debut with a “show me” attitude it wouldn’t be treated with if selected for placement in, say, Un Certain Regard.

For over a decade, Roger Moore had the task of living up to everything that Sean Connery had put in place as 007. And while some will defend Moore forever, we can’t forget the clown costumes, slide whistles, gondola chases, and so much more that pushed James Bond into an uncharted level of ridiculousness. Perhaps all of this could have been prevented had Timothy Dalton not been so green, turning down On Her Majesty’s Secret Service because he was in his mid-20s. That’s all hypothetical, of course, but Timothy Dalton would go on to reinvent James Bond in a way that may not have sat with contemporary audiences but marked a true challenge for what it meant to carry the torch. Dalton played 007 just twice; and with that, we’d challenge you to name just as many worthwhile post-Bond movies from the underappreciated actor (who we’re...

The controversial adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet starring Tom Holland and Francesca Amewudah-Rivers has finally premiered and the first reactions are coming in. Jamie Lloyd adapted this version and the director is known for his very modernized remakes of stage classics, and that fact has already caused some controversy in the theater circles. But, pairing Lloyd with Holland made the tickets sell, especially since this was Holland’s first return to the stage after Billy Elliot: The Musical, in which he appeared very early in his career. Even before the premiere, the show has been heavily discussed by fans due to the hate given to Juliet’s actress Francesca Amewudah-Rivers due to her skin color.
But, based on the early reviews that we have for you, it seems that Francesca Amewudah-Rivers completely outshined Holland, whose performance was described as disappointing, while Ameduwah-Rivers managed to stand out and...
