Released as a novel in July 2022, co-written by Michael Mann. Almost immediately speculation began as to whether it would be adapted to film, and if so who would portray the older and younger versions of the pivotal characters
Austin Butler is being considered to play the role of Chris Shiherlis that Val Kilmer played in the original movie
At an anniversary screening of the original Heat at the American Cinematheque on January 5, 2024, Michael Mann confirmed he's considering having this movie shot on 35mm film stock, which if it pans out will be Mann's first film shot entirely on 35mm film in over 20 years. At the Q&A, he said "My next film is going to be 'Heat 2,' And I'm considering shooting that on film." The director explained that although he has shot five films in a row on digital, he's agnostic when it comes to formats. "I have no prejudice either way. The only orientation I have is that if you're going to shoot video, treat it like a new medium and shoot to exploit what the new technology can do."
Austin Butler went thru extensive work with Taran Tactical (who did all Keanu Reeves training for John Wick and many more) to achieve better understanding how to work with the real guns. And even train to do exact copy of some moves that Val Kilmer was doing in original movie.
