That’s not exactly a jolly result for a special-effects adventure playing premium large format auditoriums and sporting a whopping $250 million production budget, plus sizable marketing costs. Unless the Seven Bucks production can stay relevant among the blitz of “Wicked,” “Gladiator II” and “Moana 2” arriving ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday, it seems unlikely that “Red One” will see green in its theatrical run.

The question remains of how much Amazon really cares about being associated with lukewarm theatrical returns, what with the market cap north of $2 trillion and all. The cost of “Red One” doesn’t seem as daunting in that context.

The news was announced Tuesday night on “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert.”

“Just immediate blackout, actually. Zero thoughts,” Krasinski told People about his reaction when he learned he would be this year’s honoree. “Other than maybe I’m being punked. That’s not how I wake up, thinking, ‘Is this the day that I’ll be asked to be Sexiest Man Alive?’ And yet it was the day you guys did it. You guys have really raised the bar for me.”

According to Krasinski, his wife Emily Blunt was “very excited” when she heard the news. “There was a lot of joy involved in me telling her,” he told People.

Krasinski is known for playing Jim Halpert on the U.S. version of the mockumentary sitcom “The Office” and the titular CIA analyst on the Prime Video series “Jack Ryan.

Christopher Nolan can get just about any and every A-lister he wants in his movies at this point in his career, and the latest to join his new film is another mega star and Oscar-winner: Lupita Nyong’o.

Nyong’o, who most recently starred in “A Quiet Place: Day One,” joins a cast for Nolan’s next film that includes Tom Holland, Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, and Zendaya, according to a report first in THR. Its only competition at the theatres was Transformers One, but despite good reviews, this Josh Cooley-directed film failed to attract viewers and is underperforming at the box office. The film also has an ensemble voice cast comprising Chris Hemsworth, Brian Tyree Henry, Scarlett Johansson, Keegan-Michael Key, Steve Buscemi, Laurence Fishburne, and Jon Hamm. The movie even failed to cross the $200 million mark.

According to Luiz Fernando’s report, The Wild Robot grossed a solid $9 million on its ninth weekend overseas.

Paramount Global has reported a second consecutive quarter of profitability for its direct-to-consumer (Dtc) division, with the Paramount+ streaming service adding 3.5m subscribers to reach a global total of 72m.

The Dtc performance was offset, however, by a 71% in theatrical revenue for the third quarter of 2024, “reflecting the number and timing of releases,” said the company.

As it moves towards its merger with Skydance Media, which is set to close in the first half of 2025, Paramount reported third quarter revenue of $6.73bn, down 6% on the third quarter of 2023. Operating income was down 46% to $337m and adjusted Oibda dropped 20% to $858m.

Paramount Global reported its third-quarter financial results and latest streaming updates, including a swing to a streaming profit from a year-ago loss, on Friday in the Hollywood conglomerate’s second earnings report since its sale to Skydance Media was unveiled.

That marked the second quarter of streaming unit profitability in a row, though CFO Naveen Chopra during a morning analyst conference call forecast the timing of content and marketing expenditures would produce a loss for the streaming business during the current fourth quarter, even as domestic profitability for its Paramount+ streaming platform in full-year 2025 was expected.

The company is developing a feature film that will see series topliner John Krasinski return to the titular role as the intrepid CIA analyst. Wendell Pierce (The Wire) is also set to return, while Michael Kelly (House of Cards) is in negotiations to come back as well.

With decades of incredible films shaping my expectations, it’s sometimes difficult to love new movies in this niche.

And look, I’ve accepted that I’ll never get to experience watching The Exorcist for the first time again.

But over time, it got more and more difficult to find horror films that could truly rattle me.

And yet … I curated this list because 2024 has blown me away with its horror offerings.

Unlike any year in recent history, the bangers just kept coming one after the other.

Lupita Nyong’o had to lose her Kenyan accent in order to become an American actor and take on different Hollywood roles, and she said during a recent episode of the “What Now? With Trevor Noah” podcast that it “felt like a betrayal” to herself when she made that decision. The Oscar winner was born in Mexico but spent her childhood in Kenya. She attended Yale School of Drama in the U.S. before breaking big in Hollywood.

“The first permission I gave myself to change my accent or allow my accent to transform was going to drama school,” Nyong’o said (via Entertainment Weekly). “I went to drama school because I didn’t want to just be an instinctive actor. I wanted to understand my instrument. I wanted to know what I was good at, what I was not good at, and work on the things that I wasn’t good at.

Terrifier breakout Lauren Lavera has landed a co-starring role opposite two-time Oscar nominee Djimon Hounsou (Blood Diamond) in horror-thriller The Monster, which will be directed by the Saw franchise’s Darren Lynn Bousman.

We revealed the project last week and can now confirm that rising scream queen Lavera is aboard to star in the movie.

From a screenplay by Jonathan Bernstein and James Greer (Steven Soderbergh’s Unsane), the pic was developed and is being produced by Lee Nelson and David Tish of Envision Media Arts (The Ice Road) alongside Saw franchise producer Mark Burg.

A couple of days ago, we learned that Djimon Hounsou (A Quiet Place Part II and A Quiet Place: Day One) is set to star in The Monster, a horror thriller that Darren Lynn Bousman will be directing from a screenplay by Jonathan Bernstein and James Greer, the writers of Steven Soderbergh’s Unsane. Now, our friends at Bloody Disgusting have revealed that Lauren Lavera – who played heroine Sienna in Terrifier 2 and the recently released Terrifier 3 – is in talks to join Hounsou in the cast.

Exclusive: Leonard Cohen drama So Long, Marianne will play in a raft of new territories after Cineflix cut new distribution deals for the buzzy project, which played in competition at Series Mania.

The series tells the love story of Canadian singer and poet Leonard Cohen, and an extraordinary Norwegian woman, Marianne Ihlen who inspired the titular song. Alex Wolff (A Quiet Place: Day One) plays Cohen and Thea Sofie Loch Næss (The Last Kingdom) Marianne.

The majority of the project was filmed on the Greek island of Hydra where the pair lived in the 1960s. There, they joined legendary Australian novelists Charmian Clift (Anna Torv) and her husband George Johnston (Noah Taylor), and a bohemian group of writers, artists, poets. They were exploring a world of free love and artistic freedom, but also experiencing the rivalries that accompanied their interwoven lives.

Djimon Hounsou, who is known for starring in the horror movies A Quiet Place Part II and A Quiet Place: Day One, has just been cast in an upcoming horror-thriller titled The Monster. Below, we shared all that we know about his casting and the film.

The Monster will be directed by Darren Lynn Bousman. You might recognize Bousman as the director behind four of the Saw movies: Saw II, Saw III, Saw IV and Spiral. He will be helming The Monster from a script co-written by Jonathan Bernstein and James Greer (Unsane).

There are fewer than two weeks left until Halloween, and Paramount Pictures wants to get Spooky Season rolling in style. Following the surprise success of the first film in the “Smile” horror franchise in 2022, the studio is releasing “Smile 2” on Friday, Oct. 18 to help audiences get into the spirit of the season, while also giving them an ample dosage of delightful frights. But, if you would prefer to watch the film from the safe, secure comfort of your couch, I’ll give my best guess as to when you’ll be able to stream it at home below.

Ron Howard’s ‘Eden’ Makes Int’l Premiere As Opening Film Of Torino Film Fest

Rob Howard’s thriller Eden will make its international premiere as the opening film of Italy’s Torino Film Festival next month in the presence of the Oscar-winning director. The picture stars Jude Law, Ana De Armas, Vanessa Kirby, Daniel Brühl and Sydney Sweeney as a group of people who flee 1920s Europe to start over and build paradise on the Galapagos Islands, with disastrous consequences. Italian rights for the film – which world premiered in Toronto – have been acquired by Italian International Film in collaboration with Rai Cinema, and 01 Distribution will handle the local theatrical release. The film was sold to Amazon Prime Video during Cannes in a multi-territory deal including the UK & Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, France, Scandinavia, Spain, Latin America, Japan, South Korea, South Africa, India, Turkey, West Indies, and Asia pay-tv.

Screen has learned that Paramount Pictures has struck a theatrical distribution and marketing partnership with Sony Pictures International in Germany.

The move comes as Paramount is letting go of its theatrical distribution and marketing team in the territory as parent Paramount Global cuts costs, amid wider belt-tightening across Hollywood.

The Paramount territory office will remain operational and houses the home entertainment and global content distribution teams. The size of the theatrical distribution and marketing team impacted was unclear at time of writing.

The Oscar for Best Visual Effects is particularly tough to predict because of the complicated system by which the nominees are determined in three stages. The members of the executive committee of the branch cast preferential ballots to determine 20 films for further consideration. All members of the branch are invited to a virtual screening of excerpts from these 10 films in January at which potential nominees may discuss their work. In 2022, Smile surprised audiences with a creative premise that culminated in one of the most memorable, successful horror movies of that year. Lupita Nyong’o spoke about becoming a certified scream queen with frequent horror movie appearances and coping with her persisting grief after the death of Chadwick Boseman at a BFI London Film Festival event on Monday.

Nyong’o, best known for her roles in 12 Years a Slave, A Quiet Place: Day One, and Black Panther alongside Boseman, spoke at a Screen Talk event on Monday while promoting her new film, The Wild Robot.

When first shown a clip of her character and Boseman’s T’Challa in the 2018 Marvel film Black Panther, Nyong’o was silent and became emotional. After a few seconds, the Kenyan actress revealed she has not watched the movie since Boseman’s death from colon cancer at age 43 in 2020. “The grief is the love, and no place to put it,” she said. She politely declined to move onto the next clip: “No, no… It’s fine.

All but one of the 32 summer wide release films (from May through Labor Day) have either been released to PVOD or announced its date. The average window (period of theater exclusivity) will be 35 days.

That’s six days earlier than the average (41 days) for last summer’s 34 releases. 35 days is also less than the full-year 2023 number: 37 days. And summer, with its normally top-heavy group of expected big hitters, usually has longer windows than the other eight months of the year.

January through April this year saw a 30-day window average. Post-Labor Day should be higher, but likely less than the summer, suggesting full-year 2024 will be lower than the past two post-Covid/disruption periods.

It’s too early to quantify the average time of initial streaming. But that has also been decreasing to somewhere around 120 days.
