One of three projects Dakota Johnson filmed back to back, the other two being Người Con Gái Thất Lạc (2021) and Cha Cha Real Smooth (2022).
Following its Sundance 2022 premiere, the film was bought for distribution by HBOmax with an intended 2022 streaming release. However, with the many changes and challenges that faced its parent company, Warner Bros., in the years since the acquisition and an entire rebrand of the streaming service into MAX, Am I OK? (2022) wasn't released to streaming until 2024.
St. Vincent (real name Annie Clark), who was going to compose the score (replaced by Craig Wedren), previously worked with lead actress Dakota Johnson on The Nowhere Inn (2020). The two are best friends in real-life.
Following HBO Max's rebranding to Max, it is expected that the film could get a theatrical release following Warner Bros.' refocus on theatrical releases.
