Nina Dobrev’s flawless beauty and impeccable acting charms most certainly seem to have helped in making her one of the most iconic talents in Hollywood’s entertainment industry. And yet, it can’t be denied that it was her performance as the lead female protagonist Elena Gilbert in the all-time fan-favorite The Vampire Diaries that had fans absolutely smitten with her.

Even after she went on to star in multiple other star-studded projects, Tvd continues to be the show that the 35-year-old actress is best known for. But while the staggering fame she received from the series isn’t surprising, what’s astonishing about it all is that Dobrev just may have never joined the cast of this drama had the other show she auditioned for, not had a “nudity clause”!

Jake Johnson has become quite a well-known actor since his role in Fox’s New Girl. Playing the character of Nick Miller, his performance was iconic in so many ways, becoming one of the most unhinged and beloved characters in all of sitcom history. Since then, the actor has only increased his versatility in his craft, being a part of projects like Self Reliance, Let’s Be Cops, Minx, and most famously, voicing Peter B. Parker in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

Knowing how much success and recognition he has gained through these roles, it is not surprising when he joins the cast of some projects. However, there was one particular series that had quite a lot of drama surrounding it.

Nina Dobrev has had a great career, being the lead on The Vampire Diaries for an amazing six seasons while also appearing in movies like Let’s Be Cops, the Flatliners remake and more. Yet, she’s never gotten to test her mettle as an action heroine, with her regulated to mostly non-fighting roles in films like XXX: The Return of Xander Cage. That all changes with Renny Harlin’s The Bricklayer, in which she plays a CIA analyst sent on a mission to Greece, where she’s supposed to keep an eye on the agency’s most notorious hitman, Aaron Eckhart’s Steve Vail, as he chases down a rogue agent (Clifton Collins Jr) who’s been killing journalists. While initially at odds, it doesn’t take long for the two to team up, giving Dobrev a solid chance to show off her action chops.

Cliffhanger producer and The Legend of Hercules director Renny Harlin is back with another hard-hitting action film that aims to hit you like a ton of bricks. Hailing from Vertical, The Bricklayer stars Aaron Eckhart and revolves around a rogue insurgent blackmailing the CIA by assassinating foreign journalists and making it appear the agency is responsible. As other nations turn against the U.S., the CIA must lure Steve Vail (Eckhart) – their most brilliant and rebellious operative – out of retirement. With an elite and deadly skill set, Vail is tasked with helping clear the agency’s name, forcing him to confront his checkered past while unraveling an international conspiracy.
Bringing pain alongside Steve to those who deserve it most is Nina Dobrev’s Kate, a young, no-nonsense agent with a penchant for violence and a mean trigger finger. Clifton Collins Jr., Tim Blake Nelson, and Ilfenesh Hadera also star as primary cast members.

Jake Johnson’s feature directorial debut, titled “Self Reliance,” is coming to Hulu on Sept. 8. The streamer will launch the comedy thriller, written and starring the “Minx” and “New Girl” star, as a Hulu original.
Hulu acquired the film in a deal with MRC and Paramount Global Distribution after fierce competition following its debut at the SXSW Film Festival in March. The logline for the film reads: “When a man is offered a million dollars to play a game in which hunters try to kill him, he thinks he has found the perfect loophole: they can only attack when he’s alone. His only problem is that none of his friends or family believe the game is real.”
Along with Johnson, the film stars Anna Kendrick, Natalie Morales, Andy Samberg, GaTa (“Dave”), Emily Hampshire (“Schitt’s Creek”), Mary Holland, Boban Marjanović, Christopher Lloyd and Wayne Brady.

Universal has moved “Strays” from June 9 to August 18, placing the R-rated talking-animal comedy in the same general release slot where the likes of “Good Boys” and “We’re The Millers” found fortune and glory in years prior. Now, instead of opening against “Transformers: Rise of the Beast,” itself something of a talking-animal tentpole, it’ll square off against DC’s “Blue Beetle.”

With its list of new releases for April 2023, HBO Max is premiering the final episodes of two major shows.
First up is the continuation of Titans season 4 on April 13. Returning after a four month hiatus, these next six episodes will be the last go around for HBO Max’s gritty live-action DC series. Arriving three days later on HBO proper is the fourth and final season of Barry. Bill Hader and the rest of the Barry team wrote themselves into a fascinating corner with the conclusion of season 3. And judging by the first teasers for season 4, this final batch of episodes will indeed catch up with our favorite actor/hitman in prison.
Other TV shows of note this month include the Pete Davidson-starring animated series Fired on Mars on April 20 (light ’em up) the the Elizabeth Olsen-starring true crime story Love & Death on April 27.

Update 2/25: Jordan Peele’s Monkeypaw and Simon Kinberg’s Genre Films have issued a statement about the end of The Twilight Zone series.
We greatly enjoyed our time working on The Twilight Zone — particularly when the real world around us often felt more and more like another dimension. We cherished the opportunity to collaborate with so many talented writers, actors and crewmembers. After 20 unique episodes, we have told the stories that we wanted to tell, and CBS All Access was gracious in their understanding of our decision. It was an honor and a privilege to bring audiences a modern re-imagining of Rod Serling’s iconic creation.

An emotional rollercoaster from minute one, director Luke Greenfield’s Half Brothers ultimately taps into something earnest. Renato (Luis Gerardo Méndez) is a salty engineer living in Mexico City, days away from marrying Pamela (Pia Watson), when he gets a phone call from the States. His estranged father Flavio (Juan Pablo Espinosa) is dying and has asked to speak with his son. Reticent to acknowledge a man who abandoned him and his mother so many years before, Renato is pushed by Pamela, who is convinced her fiancee needs closure in order to become a good father to their son, a young boy struggling with his own eccentricities.
Moments after arriving in Chicago, Renato learns that he’s got a half-brother named Asher (Connor Del Rio), with whom he could not be more different. Upon Flavio’s death, the brothers are called into a mystery of their father’s creation. A strained-but-ultimately cathartic road trip ensues,...

Exclusive: Deadline hears that STXfilms is in advanced talks with Let’s Be Cops and The Girl Next Door filmmaker Luke Greenfield to direct the action-thriller We Are Untouchable.
Greenfield will direct from a script he co-wrote with Captain Mauzner (Billionaire Boys Club, Wonderland, Factory Girl). The Greenfield/Mauzner screenplay is based on a screenplay by Oritte Bendory and Aaron Feldman with revisions by Michael Diliberti and by Anthony Drazan. Greenfield most recently directed and produced the Focus Features dramedy Half Brothers. We Are Untouchable will be his next project. Chernin Entertainment is producing. We Are Untouchable focuses on a group of international college grads working in Mexico City at their respective diplomatic embassies. By day, they’re slaving away as mailroom assistants getting abused by their bosses. But when they find out they have diplomatic immunity — and they can’t get arrested for anything they do — they go wild with...

Audiences may already be looking ahead to Avengers: Infinity War, but this weekend could feature an interesting battle among the top three. While we're expecting A Quiet Place to return to the weekend's #1 spot, the race could be a little closer should Rampage hold on better than expected or if Amy Schumer's new comedy I Feel Pretty outperforms expectations. The weekend also sees the release of Fox Searchlight's Super Troopers 2 and Lionsgate's release of Traffik into a moderate number of locations. Beginning with A Quiet Place, the horror/thriller has already brought in nearly $110 million and is poised to top recent horror hits Split and The Conjuring. With Paramount adding another 219 locations for a total of 3,808 theaters, we're anticipating a 36% drop and a three-day right around $21 million. Come the end of the weekend the film should top $130 million domestically. Look for Dwayne Johnson's Rampage to...

Rob Riggle often tickles our funny bone as the comic relief in many of his movies (21 Jump Street, The Hangover) and television projects. We've also often seen the comedian play military and authoritative types (12 Strong, Let's Be Cops) given his tall statue and military background, but this time he wanted to play up the sensitive side of a character. Riggle's tells Sabina Graves how he fought for the role as a single father to an teen (played by Bella Thorne) suffering from a rare disease in Midnight Sun. Watch the interview below.

Memorial Day weekend brings two new wide releases to theaters in Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales and Paramount's R-rated comedy Baywatch, the latter of which got a head start on the weekend holding preview screenings last night and arriving nationwide today. Neither are necessarily expected to blow the doors off with Pirates looking to finish well behind the last three films, especially Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, which currently holds the Memorial Day opening weekend record of $139.8 million. Meanwhile there are a few questions as to just how high Baywatch will finish as Paramount really could use a win with this one as not one of their four releases this year has managed to hit $45 million domestically. At the top, while it isn't expected to top $100 million for the four day or even the $90.1 million Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides delivered...

That face! Nina Dobrev just adopted a new dog — and she's the cutest! The Vampire Diaries alum introduced her via Instagram on Monday, April 24.
"Meet Maverick," she captioned a pic of the pup wearing a red hair bow.
The star, 28, even created a "@Mrs.Maverick" Instagram account for her new buddy. "Hi. My name is Maverick Do(g)brev. I like long walks on the beach and candle lit dinners in doggie bowls," the introductory post reads. "I have a brother named Goose and we’re both 9 weeks old. As has been the case over the last three weekends, this weekend is looking to outperform last year and, once again, by a significant margin. The big story, of course, is Disney's Beauty and the Beast as it continues to blow the doors off, becoming one of the fastest films to top $200 million at the domestic box office and, by the end of this weekend, will have topped $300 million in just ten days of release. In addition to Beauty and the Beast's second weekend, three new wide releases make their debut including Lionsgate's Power Rangers, Sony's R-rated sci-fi Life and WB's R-rated comedy CHiPs, all of which will have varying degrees of success as the top twelve should top a combined $180 million, making it the second largest weekend of the year. As of Wednesday, Disney's Beauty and the Beast has brought in $217.6 million domestically and another $244.3 million internationally. This...

Properties in Hollywood rarely ever die. Sometimes they stay dormant for a while, but given the right circumstances, we're bound to see practically every conceived property pop up at least twice. Rush Hour was a hit in the late 90s and early 2000s, and is in the works as a TV series, and along those same lines we have Lethal Weapon, a TV series based on the hit film series that spanned four films and eleven years.

Universal is estimating that Straight Outta Compton made $56M in 2,757 theaters, a remarkable $20,345 per screen average. Compton easily bested the other wide release, The Man from U.N.C.L.E., which is under-performing with an estimated $13.5M. The Top 12, at $133.6M, is up 4% from last year when The Expendables 3 shocked many by opening in 4th place with $15.9M, beaten not only by holdovers Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Guardians of the Galaxy but by the other newcomer to the schedule, Let's Be Cops, which opened to $17.8M. If Compton ends up with actuals of $56M that would make it the sixth best August opening of all time, coming in ahead of 2011's Rise of the Planet of the Apes with $54M but behind Signs with $60M in 2002. The well-reviewed bio-pic of the rap group N.W.A., was produced, along with others, by original band members Ice Cube and Dr. Dre, as well as by their director,...

This probably wasn't the reaction Warner Bros. was expecting when they moved the new comedy "Vacation" from October to July. The fifth big screen edition of the franchise that helped make Chevy Chase a star was supposed to be a summer comedy "surprise." This year's "Meet the Millers" or "Let's Be Cops," but, um, actually funny. That doesn't seem to be the case. Directed by the "Horrible Bosses" writing team of John Francis Daley and Jonathan M. Goldstein, "Vacation" earned just a B Cinemascore from audiences polled after seeing it (an average score is actually an A). Critics weren't that kind either. It landed with a terrible 33 out of 100 grade on Metacritic and scored just 26% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes which is pretty rotten. And, no, that's not good for its long term prospects at the box office. Still, is it really that bad? Is "Vacation" really one of the worst movies of the year?...

If you follow Hayley Atwell (Captain America: The First Avenger) on Twitter, you probably know by now that over the past few weeks, she's more or less become the queen of Dubsmash, a popular new iOS app that allows users to lipsync with popular songs, movie lines, and a variety of other sounds. Over the past weekend at San Diego Comic-Con, Atwell found her Dubsmash skills put to the test as she and Agent Carter co-star James D'Arcy (Let's Be Cops) found themselves locked in a fierce competition with Clark Gregg (The Avengers) and the cast of Marvel's Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.. Director Paul Feig's upcoming Ghostbusters reboot has already put together a pretty great ensemble of stars - including Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Leslie Jones, Kate McKinnon, and Chris Hemsworth - but today the roster has gotten even deeper. That's because new reports have revealed that the in-production blockbuster has added four more actors to the cast. The Wrap has the scoop on these new additions, but let's break them down one-by-one, shall we? Andy Garcia was a pretty busy guy in 2014, voicing a blue bird in Rio 2, teaming with Jeremy Renner on the drama Kill The Messenger, and looking for laughs in Let's Be Cops, and now his 2016 is looking a lot more interesting thanks to his role in Ghostbusters. While the precise details of his role are being kept a secret for now, apparently he will be playing the mayor of New York City in the movie.
