While researching the history of Christmas movies, I watched 22 different adaptations of “A Christmas Carol,” and even that felt like just scratching the surface. So if Ebenezer Scrooge can be subject to myriad interpretations — even when some fans are convinced that one version or other is the “definitive” one — why shouldn’t the Grinch?
That’s an easier argument to make now that we have “Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch” as an example of how to revisit the material, particularly since the 2000 live-action take was such a grim and overblown piece of Yule-sploitation. That version no doubt led many to dread this latest one, from “Minions”-makers Illumination Entertainment, but this new animated feature is bright, both in its color palette and in the wit and liveliness of the storytelling.
You know the tale: the curmudgeonly Grinch (now voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch) lives high atop Mount Crumpet with his devoted dog Max,...

There’s a whole world of superhero-related comedy that has yet to be fully explored because, quite ridiculously, most audiences are too wrapped up in the more serious ventures put out by Marvel and DC in the form of movies and television dramas. But that’s why we have brilliant minds like Felicia Day, who has created a platform where less typical types of programs can be tackled. Day’s Geek & Sundry YouTube channel is going to be the future home of a new web series from Amy Berg and Mike Sizemore, called Caper. It’s the exact kind of silliness that I’ve been wanting from a superhero series for the longest time.
The web series will reunite Berg with Leverage star Beth Riesgraf, who will be playing one of four superheroes who, according to THR, are forced to consider a life of crime in order to fund their crime-fighting lifestyles.

Exclusive: After each of them has co-created a TBS series, Walt Becker (Wild Hogs) and Cheers alum Rob Long have teamed for a multi-camera comedy project, which has landed a pilot order at TBS. The network has greenlighted Do It Yourself, created and executive produced by Becker and Long and produced internally at Turner. It tells the story of Nick, a 20-something laid-off math teacher who finds himself thrust into the blue collar world when he gets a job at that most American of retail institutions: the big box home supply store. Nick quickly becomes the de facto leader of his band of misfit coworkers while also figuring out ways to redefine what it means to be a teacher. Becker and Michael LeSieur created TBS’ hourlong fraternity comedy series Glory Daze, which ran for one season. Matt Bush has been a hot commodity since he was featured in the 2009 Jesse Eisenberg comedy "Adventureland." Soon afterward, he landed a starring role on the TBS comedy "Glory Daze" as a freshman rushing a fraternity.
Now 26, Bush has the pot-centric comedy "High School" and "Piranha 3Dd" both hitting Blu-ray and DVD this week. In "Piranha 3Dd," he may or may not be fish food.
We chatted with Bush, who will next be seen in "Trouble With the Curve" (opening Sept. 21), about his various roles, which superhero he'd love to play and what exactly he was smokin' on set.

Director Marcus Nispel is best known as the helmer of high-profile remakes that were considered good (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre), bad (Friday the 13th), and very ugly (Conan the Barbarian). Perhaps he realized that he needed to restore his reputation, so he signed on to direct the Indie-horror flick, Backmask. Let's look at this as the good, the bad and the ugly. Max Minghella, the son of the late Anthony Minghella, is in early negotiations to join the 20th Century Fox comedy, "The Internship." The good: it's a film written by Vince Vaughn, and it reunites Vaughn with his "Wedding Crashers" co-star Owen Wilson. The bad: Neither of them have been as good since that now undisputed modern comedy classic film arrived in 2005 (Though Vaughn's "The Break-Up" is very underrated). The relatively ugly (or to be fair, slightly unfortunate): It's directed by Shawn Levy, the rather toothless filmmaker behind Mor hits like “Just Married,” “Cheaper By The Dozen” the 2006 version of “The Pink Panther” whose career unexpectedly took off after his back to back “Night Of The Museum” films became major hits (he then helmed "Date Night" and "Real Steel").
Levy then became suddenly in demand as a potential tentpole director,...

It’s that time of year, and the networks are revealing their schedules for fall. Fox is always an interesting network when it comes to the upfront season, because they usually don’t have a lot of changes, but they often have fascinating (if doomed) series on the horizon.

We’ve been watching the development of 666 Park Avenue starring Terry O’Quinn for some time now, and had been keeping an eye on the alien comedy The Neighbors, but we got a wonderful surprise today when we saw the full description of midseason (meaning 2013) series Zero Hour starring Anthony Edwards.
We had been told that he played a skeptic whose wife gets abducted, but happily, as we found today, he is a “confessed paranormal junkie” and that he will be running ”a breathless race against the clock to find his wife and save humanity.” Ooo, save humanity! It’s also said to be a DaVinci Code-type hunt with ancient clues. What sealed it for me was the trailer, which we have for you.

It's mid-May, and in the world of television that can only mean one thing: the television network upfronts are announced, and we find out what shows have been cancelled and what's coming for the fall 2012 TV season.
Today it was Fox Broadcasting's turn to reveal what's in store for viewers of their channel. With some old favorites gone (like House), there are several openings on the broadcaster's iternary. Let's see what's new, what's coming back, and how Fox describes their new programs.
New shows:
Ben And Kate (creator: Dana Fox)
What happens when an exuberant, irresponsible dreamer who always says “yes” moves in with his overly responsible little sister to help raise her five-year-old daughter? Ben And Kate, a new single-camera young ensemble comedy, follows these odd-couple siblings as they push each other out of their comfort zones and into real life. Kate Fox (Dakota Johnson, “The Social Network”) followed the rules all her life…...

Chicago – When so much of your already-limited primetime schedule is devoted to reality singing competitions and animated programming, it gives a network little room to play. Fox only has a few timeslots once one takes “The X Factor”/”American Idol” and “Animation Domination” out of the equation. But play they will. “Touch” is moving to Fridays, “Glee” is moving to Thursdays, and they will launch three new shows in the Fall.
The Fall on Fox will feature only one new drama (“The Mob Doctor”) and two new comedies (“Ben and Kate” and “The Mindy Project”). Some of their most interesting programming, including the highly touted “The Following” with Kevin Bacon, won’t premiere until mid-season.
Saturdays and Sundays will look the same and “The X Factor” and “American Idol” will have the same Wednesday night two-hour and Thursday result schedule.
The network will also attempt the two-hour comedy block on Tuesday nights again,...

Movie fans know all too well that Hollywood comes up with a lot of half baked ideas, but thanks to the new trailer for "High School," we can now assure you this is one idea that is fully baked.
In fact, you might get a contact high just watching it.
Here's the scoop: Matt Bush ("Adventureland," "Glory Daze") is a high school student with big dreams of going to MIT. Unfortunately, just days after trying weed for the first time, the principal (Michael Chiklis, sporting a crazy wig and mustache) decides to have the whole school participate in a randomized drug test. There's just one solution: Lace the school's bake sale with super-pot stolen from a crazy drug dealer (Adrien Brody!) to make sure that everybody else fails the test too.
Check it out, courtesy of YouTube — and see why this trailer puts the high back in "High School."...

Let's start the weekly round-up with Grimm.
Grimm's ratings dropped a little this week, but the show still won the 18-49 demo in its timeslot, finishing ahead of CSI: NY, Fringe and Supernatural, and rising by a full frakking ratings point (1.8) after Chuck (0.8). Wake up, Chuck.
Hitfix visited the set in Portland recently and posted a lengthy report. Here is a snippet:
Sasha Roiz on how his character will develop later in the series: "I’m not a Grimm descendent, but I'm a descendent of a long line that dates back just as Grimm does and we have a bit of a history and a past, so my line is a royal line and that will slowly unfold throughout the series."Collider has a longer interview with Sasha and Reggie Lee (more at the link):
It’s nice to see your character – like the main character – has the duality.

The sit-com market is an especially tricky game these days, and Whitney is an effort that seems to be trying largely to go back to a construct that used to capture people in droves, mixed with a somewhat updated sense of humor. It has certain Mad About You feel to things, but we're watching a different couple, in a different age. These are people who grew up with Seinfeld, and their friends are fans of Cougar Town (after the revamp). It's a bit more adult, and this is an era in which comedy often means being a bit more open to the speaking of one's mind, and letting the censors figure it out later.
This is not in the sense that there is a lot of cussing or vulgarity, but in the sense that when Whitney becomes uncertain about whether or not she's having sex with her boyfriend often enough,...

Things move fast in Beverly Hills!
Actor Drew Seeley was set to guest star as newcomer Jeremy this season on "90210" as our West Bev friends head off to their various post-high-school lives.
Unfortunately for him, sources tell Zap2it exclusively that Seeley, best known as Zac Efron's singing voice in the first "High School Musical" and most recently of TBS's '80s college comedy "Glory Daze," called into work sick on Wednesday -- and was promptly replaced.
Unable to rearrange the schedule to accomodate Seeley's sick day, the powers that be at "90210" pulled an eleventh-hour switcheroo. Sources tell us the character will now be played by Matt Cohen, who is familiar to CW fanatics from his role as young John Winchester on "Supernatural." Cohen had auditioned for the role earlier, but was the producers' second choice.
Series star Shenae Grimes, however, knows Cohen from their days on "Degrassi" and "South of Nowhere" respectively,...

Take a gander at the various Emmy nomination ballots and you'll quickly discover something: Almost everyone puts their name in for a nomination.
It doesn't matter if the show died a quick and painless death, if it was critically derided for much of its short run, it's so obscure no one has ever heard of it, or it's an established -- and sometimes quite good -- show whose chances of being nominated are about the same as our seeing dinosaurs roaming the planet in our lifetimes.
This isn't an ego thing, surprisingly enough; the academy encourages casts and crews from all shows to submit themselves for a nomination, likely under the axiom that you've got to be in it to win it (did you hear that, Charlie Sheen?). What this all-inclusive attitude can lead to, though, is some pretty funny discoveries.
So, let's pretend that we're in the Bizarro world...

I don't blame MTV for trying to cash in on the current vampire and werewolf craze, considering its audience is the same that gives Twilight every award known to man at every MTV Movie Awards.
Basing the new series loosely on famous 1985 movie Teen Wolf seemed like a good way to gain an entirely new audience, as fans of the Michael J. Fox film might give it a shot.
Although I was born in the year the original movie came out, I have seen the Wolf perform his patented two-handed block and tomahawk slam more than enough times to call myself a fan. But aside from a couple of general ideas, mainly a few character names and the fact that Scott is both a teenager and a werewolf, the new MTV series does not have much in common with the film on which it's supposedly based.

Long before Kristen Wiig was cracking us up in "Bridesmaids," the Western New York native was honing her comedy chops with The Groundlings improv troupe in L.A. In case you never got to see the funny lady perform for you live in those early years, NextMovie has dug up the next best thing.
In this authentic video, Wiig and her troupe mate Melinda Hill (who has since appeared on "The Sarah Silverman Program" and "Glory Daze") perform one of their most popular sketches, "Confessions of a Tooth Fairy."
As a bonus, Wiig appears to be wearing a bridesmaid dress -- a coincidental discovery considering last weekend's premiere of "Bridesmaids?" You tell us.

It's that time again, and NBC has revealed it's 2011-2012 schedule. A couple of things have been kicked to the curb, and a host of new shows are coming to fill things in. Chicago – The slow trickle of news regarding NBC cancellations and renewals has finally burst the dam and we have the entire Fall schedule to present along with descriptions of the new programs and time/day changes for several of your favorites.

NBC will aggressively try to right a ratings-challenged ship by programming 12 new programs over the year — 6 new dramas and 6 new comedies. Many of them won’t premiere until mid-season and “30 Rock” won’t return until then either, running uninteruppted from that point (not unlike “Parks and Recreation” did this year). In other major news, the final, 13-episode season of “Chuck” will air on Friday nights.
The returning shows for the network include “Parenthood,” “Harry’s Law,” “Chuck,” “Community,” “Parks and Recreation,” “The Office,” “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,” “The Voice,” “The Sing-Off,” “The Celebrity Apprentice,” “The Biggest Loser,” “30 Rock,” and “Dateline NBC.”

I also hear that the network's other two one-hour pilots, Ron Shelton's Hound Dogs and the Dean Devlin-produced Brain Trust, are not going forward. Along with the broadcast networks, TNT and TBS are also prepping for their upfront presentation next week. TBS is expected to officially unveil The Wedding Band at the Turner presentation Wednesday. The Wedding Band, from writers and executive producers Josh Lobis and Darin Moiselle (South Park), FremantleMedia and Mike Tollin's Tollin Prods., follows a group of guys performing in a wedding band, anchored by two lifelong best friends -- perennial bachelor Tommy (Brian Austin Green) and Eddie (Peter Cambor), a married father of two. Co-starring in the pilot are Lost alum Perrineau, Kathryn Fiore, Jenny Wade and Derek Miller.
