After showing us a bloodbath of a wedding reception in [Rec] 3: Genesis, the influential Spanish zombie franchise is going back to its roots in its fourth entry with familiar faces behind and in front of the camera, with the living dead virus this time spreading throughout the claustrophobic confines of a ship at sea. Magnet Releasing has acquired the film and set a release date.

It's my own fault for stepping into a late night screening of Rec 4: Apocalypse. For a bit of historical perspective, I quite liked Rec, despised Rec 2 and didn't even bother with Rec 3: Genesis after hearing nothing but bad things. So why go into the fourth (and supposedly final) installment in the franchisec I guess I'm just a sucker for punishment, because this is one hell of an uninspired and lifeless sequel, holding onto mere threads before dropping into the abyss, hopefully forgotten forever. The film serves as a direct sequel to Rec 2, opening with a brief sequence within the Barcelona apartment building where television reporter Angela Vidal (Manuela Velasco) entered with her crew only to be exposed to a virus that turned people into zombies. The story continues as Angela is extracted from the building only to wake up disoriented, quarantined on a ship out at sea with...

Jaume Balagueró, the director of 2007’s Rec and it’s equally terrifying 2009 sequel [link=[/link] auto]Rec 2[/link] returns to the franchise’s supposed final installment, Rec 4: Apocalypse. Picking up after the events of the second film (the third was a prequel), the fourth film follows Ángela Vidal (Manuela Velasco), the series’ original heroine, as she fights to survive on an oil tanker that has become infested with zombie-like possession victims. Rec 3: Genesis did away with the found footage style of the first two after the opening scenes and with Apocalypse it looks like it has made the full transition to traditionally shot narrative cinema. Rec 4: Apocalypse looks like it may be a very exciting and potentially frightening conclusion to the series when it is released later this year.

We've already seen that Jaume Balagueró's new entry into the [Rec] franchise pretty much does away with both the third movie and the found footage aesthetic, with the story returning to Ángela and picking up after the events that unfolded in [Rec] 2.
This time, the story puts Ángela on an oil rig where she's being monitored and tested on by a group of scientists. It's not clear what they're looking for, probably an answer as to how she's managed to survive the events of the previous two movies. Things go wrong, a zombie nightmare breaks out and Ángela appears to be the only one who can stop it.

Okay, I doubt Charles Bronson will be there, but if anyone could pull it off, Colin Geddes could. There are few things I look forward to with more fervor each year than Toronto's Midnight Madness selection each year. Programmer Colin Geddes is not just a phenomenal ringleader, an instigator of a controlled cinema riot every single night of the festival, but he is also a tremendous friend, the sort of person who is a pleasure to bump into anywhere at any festival in the world. Today, the announcement was made of his line-up, and my first reaction is, "I can vouch for some of those." I really liked "The Guest" when I saw it at Sundance, and I think it's got one of the weirdest performances of the year in the form of Dan Stevens, previously best known for "Downton Abbey." It's from the same team who brought you "You're Next,...

The official trailer for '[Rec] 4: Apocalypse' has hit the web. The new trailer for the Jaume Balaguero helmed sequel re-introduces us to TV reporter Angela Vidal running around like a possessed woman, as expected. Spanish hottie Manuela Velasco returns for the third time as reporter Vidal who now finds herself quarantined on an old oil tanker after escaping the notorious apartment building featured in the first two movies. Hey wait, they're still making these? In case you missed out on the barely there sensation, in 2007, Jaume Balagueró and Paco Plaza turned horror heads with their riff on the found footage genre, "[Rec]." It was reasonably effective take on the style, and it caused enough of a stir that two years later Hollywood dropped a remake that no one really cared about. But the original franchise kept going with "[Rec] 2" dropping in 2009, followed by "[Rec] 3: Genesis" in 2012. And now another installment is coming, "[Rec] 4: Apocalypse," with Balagueró back behind the camera for this time since the first sequel, and it looks like not much has changed. This time around Manuela Velasco, also returning from part two, is back in the lead, with the story now relocated to an oil tanker (!?) where some untrustworthy doctors have unleashed the virus packing undead once again. It seems like another excuse to contain a lot...

An official trailer for [Rec] 4: Apocalypse has been released by Filmax International. This third sequel is being helmed by [Rec] 2 writer Jaume Balagueró. The clip brings back Angela (Manuela Velasco), a news reporter from the first film and this time she is trapped on an oil tanker, with the infected. The exciting clip is hosted below. From the film's synopsis, Angela is the source of a new infection. She is quarantined on an isolated oil tanker as research continues on a disease, which spreads quickly from person to person. Here, the infection is unwittingly released once again and shipmates must fight against a growing horde of crazed creatures, or become fish food. There is no escape with the ship hundreds of miles from shore. [Rec] 4: Apocalypse will be released in Europe later this year. A distribution date for North America has not been announced to date. Fans of horror can preview...

Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones (Jan 3rd)

Genre site Aullidos scored two behindt-the-scenes images from [Rec] 4: Apocalypse. You can find both pics after the jump.
What are we looking at? Well, the second image finds director Jaume Balaguero doing his thing. The first image? Those are either crew members setting some sort of net...or, they're the infected/possessed scrambling to climb the net. Shooting has been taking place on a boat - how it factors into the story, we're uncertain.

The gorgeous Manuela Velasco (below) takes us on a brief behind the scenes trip around the set of '[Rec] 4: Apocalypse' (Aka '[Rec] 4: Apocalipsis') the final installment in the popular Spanish horror franchise. Below you can view a motion poster for ‘[Rec] 4: Apocalypse’, which features the return of Manuela Velasco as reporter-turned-infectee Ángela Vidal.
The polarizing third film in the series, ‘[Rec] 3: Genesis’ shared artistic similarities with its predecessors, at least in regards to posters. The main difference to that end was an emphasis on white, which made sense since the film’s story centered upon a wedding gone awry by a zombie-like virus.
What I personally find interesting is that media for ‘Apocalypse’ is thus far very much in line with the first two films. What with the unique direction that ‘Genesis’ took (for better or worse), I would have expected the same for ‘Apocalypse’ — a different color scheme, something. My theory is that those involved are trying to distance themselves from the controversial prequel as much as possible.
But as close as the marketing may be, the fourth film, which is now in pre-production,...
