We’re going to keep the basic cast and character details here spoiler-free, though we will add some hints to help you keep track, in case you’re wondering where you’ve seen that actor before without getting the whole movie ruined for you. But not to worry, if you’re looking for a breakdown of who’s in who’s body, we’ll include that in a spoiler section below, too.

Burt Young, a former boxer who was in Sylvester Stallone’s corner as his brother-in-law Paulie in the six Rocky films and received a supporting actor Oscar nomination for his turn in the original, has died. He was 83.
He died on Oct. 8 in Los Angeles, his daughter, Anne Morea Steingieser, told The New York Times Wednesday.
A tough guy in real life who usually played tough guys onscreen, Young portrayed a rotten client of gumshoe Jack Nicholson’s in Chinatown (1974), was mobster “Bed Bug” Eddie in The Pope of Greenwich Village (1984) and played Rodney Dangerfield’s protector/chauffeur Lou in Back to School (1986).
Young also appeared in four movies in four straight years with fellow Queens guy James Caan — Cinderella Liberty (1973), The Gambler (1974), The Killer Elite (1975) and Harry and Walter Go to New York (1976) — before they worked together again in Mickey Blue Eyes (1999).

Burt Young, who played Paulie in six of the “Rocky” films starring Sylvester Stallone, drawing an Oscar nomination for supporting actor for his performance in the 1976 original, has died, his daughter Anne Morea Steingieser confirmed to the New York Times. He was 83.
Roger Ebert gave Young his props for his performance in the first “Rocky” film: “And Burt Young as (Adrian’s) brother — defeated and resentful, loyal and bitter, caring about people enough to hurt them just to draw attention to his grief.” The New York Times — in an absolutely scathing, completely dismissive review of the film — nevertheless said: “Burt Young is effective as Rocky’s best friend, a beer-guzzling mug.”
Young’s temperamental, jealous but nonetheless loyal and caring Paulie Pennino was Rocky’s best friend — he would defend the Italian Stallion if someone insulted him. But he was a problematic friend who shouts at Adrian during her pregnancy,...

Les Arcs Industry Village Winners: ‘The Visitor’, ‘Rossosperanza’ & ‘Veni Vidi Vici’ Take Top Prizes
Lithuanian filmmaker Vytautas Katkus’s debut feature project The Visitor won the top €6,000 Artekino International Award at the Les Arcs Coproduction Village on Tuesday.
The award, decided by Rémi Burah, President of ArteKino Foundation and CEO of Arte France Cinéma, is granted to support the development of the project.
The project, which previously won Cannes Critics’ Week Next Step prize in May, revolves around a young man attempting to make a new life for himself in a foreign land where he does not speak the language or know anyone.
“For this 2022 edition, the ArteKino International Award supports a first feature by a director walking the line between fiction and documentary, social realism and fantastic poetry, with a subtle balance that he has demonstrated in his already very mastered short films,” said Burah.
The Visitor was among 18 feature projects participating in the Les Arcs Coproduction Village.

A version of this story first appeared in the Race Begins issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
By the time the “Yellowjackets” Season 1 finale aired in January, Showtime’s drama-horror-dark-comedy had achieved full-fledged phenomenon status. It had amassed near-unanimous critical raves, averaged five million weekly viewers — which made it the second-most streamed series in Showtime’s history, after last year’s “Dexter: New Blood” — and inspired dozens of sub-Reddits bursting with frenzied fan theories.
People were positively obsessed with the saga of forty-something women coping with memories of being stranded as teenagers in the Canadian wilderness following a plane crash. In one timeline, high school soccer players succumb to their most primal instincts as they embrace the occult and inch towards cannibalism; in the other, four adult survivors played by Melanie Lynskey, Tawny Cypress, Juliette Lewis and Christina Ricci grapple with their trauma.

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “Only Murders in the Building” Episode 10, “Open and Shut.”]
Back in Episode 4, podcaster extraordinaire Cinda Canning (Tina Fey) not only provided the narration that bookended “The Sting,” but she also teased the ending of “Only Murders in the Building” by flashing “a few months” ahead. The host of “All Is Not Ok in Oklahoma” — the true crime series that first brought together Charles (Steve Martin), Mabel (Selena Gomez), and Oliver (Martin Short) — was suddenly talking about them, only it didn’t make much sense at the time. After quoting a line from “Brazzos” about second chances, not-Sarah-Koenig says, “[it] prophesied what would happen 15 years later, when a fake detective decided to become a real one; when he and his true crime fan buddies took a second chance — and became the subject of our next investigation.”
“Stay tuned for ‘Only Murderers in the Building,’ coming this fall.”

Most directors wouldn’t follow up a best picture Oscar victory with a children’s movie produced by and distributed on a new streaming service. But that’s exactly what Tom McCarthy did after “Spotlight,” his powerful 2015 drama about sex abuse in the Catholic Church, became an awards season darling. His latest feature, “Timmy Failure: Mistakes Were Made,” will be one of the first films to debut on Disney Plus when it drops on Feb. 7.

Showtime has ordered an eight-episode limited series starring Russell Crowe as the late Fox News chief Roger Ailes. Based on writer Gabriel Sherman’s book “The Loudest Voice in the Room,” the limited series will tell the story of Ailes and his fall from atop Fox News amid sexual harassment allegations. Sherman co-wrote the first episode of the limited series with Tom McCarthy.
“In many ways, the collision between the media and politics has come to define the world we live in today,” said Showtime Networks president and CEO David Nevins. “We’ve seen this phenomenon depicted on screen as far back as the story of Charles Foster Kane, and it finds contemporary embodiment in the rise and fall of Roger Ailes. With Russell Crowe in the lead role, this limited series promises to be a defining story for this era.”
The project would mark the first major U.S.

To begin with, it felt easier to categorize Tom McCarthy. The actor-turned-director’s first three movies, “The Station Agent,” “The Visitor” and “Win Win,” were quite different in some ways, but all felt of a piece: gentle, humane comedy-dramas with excellent performances. But then he made the pilot for “Game Of Thrones,” albeit the original, unaired version mostly scrapped after cast changes and other issues.

It's been 10 years since Amy Ryan broke through to "prestigious character actress" fame, whilst nabbing herself an Oscar nomination and critical hosannas for Gone Baby Gone (2017). In the years intervening, it's been fairly obvious that Hollywood didn't know what to do with her thereafter, often casting her in less than challenging roles as sympathetic wives (think Win Win or Bridge of Spies) or ex-wives (think Birdman). But she's finally no one's wife in the humble drama Abundant Acreage Available, and that lack of 'belonging to' is both writer/director Angus Maclachlan's (best known for the screenplay to the wonderful Junebug, 2005) and Ryan's own secret weapon, giving the movie its most appealing frictions...

“I thought I was going to get fired.”
In a perfect world, such a thought would never cross Melanie Lynskey’s mind, for the talented actress would literally never be in danger of getting canned. She could throw fits next to crafty, punch a grip in the face, or burn down the sets, and we’d still forgive her because… Well, because Melanie Lynskey would never do any of that. She’s Melanie Lynskey.
But the actor you fell in love with during “Beautiful Creatures,” “Togetherness,” or the 2017 Sundance Grand Jury Prize-winning film “I Don’t Feel at Home in This World Anymore” did have the thought cross her mind for the strangest of reasons: Tom McCarthy found out she was a recurring cast member on “Two and a Half Men.”

"In the past month, what we've seen is how it's started to cross over and how it's really started to have a social impact," Tom McCarthy says of Spotlight — the fifth film he wrote and directed, after 2003's The Station Agent, 2008's The Visitor, 2011's Win Win and 2014's The Cobbler — as we sit down to record an episode of the 'Awards Chatter' podcast. Indeed, the drama about the Boston Globe journalists who exposed the Catholic Church's sex abuse scandal in Boston has been screened for the Pope's Vatican commission on church misconduct; it has been screened

There's still a few months to go before the sixth season of "Game Of Thrones" arrives, but before HBO's fantasy series was a worldwide phenomenon, it was just another pilot that could. And what you may not know is that "Spotlight" and "Win Win" director Tom McCarthy was tasked with filming it. The writer/director who generally specializes in intimate character dramas doesn't seem like the most obvious choice for George R.R. Martin's material, and back in 2011 in an interview with Av Club, he's the first to admit he wasn't the right fit. "I just didn’t feel connected to it," he said, and the process in general left him pretty disenchanted about working in television again. "I think there are some really good TV directors, but that is a writers’ medium and a studio’s medium. There was a good learning curve on that, but I don’t...

Superb performances are at the heart of one of the Oscar frontrunners, Spotlight. Here's our review...
Films sometimes have odd ways of depicting how journalism works, either overestimating the glamour or underestimating the actual effort, depending on whether the representation is positive or negative. In real life, good journalists don't make themselves the story, and so it goes in Spotlight.
You might not expect a more full and frank procedural approach from a film that's been garlanded with awards nominations for the last few months, but you might expect it of director Tom McCarthy, who previously gave us Win Win and The Station Agent. For better or worse, his latest truly has no frills, instead zeroing in on the nitty-gritty of how a major true story was reported.

Spotlight director Tom McCarthy, star Brian d'Arcy James, screenwriter Josh Singer Photo: Anne-Katrin Titze
Tom McCarthy's astutely paced newsroom thriller stars Michael Keaton, Rachel McAdams, Mark Ruffalo and Brian d'Arcy James as The Boston Globe Spotlight team, with Liev Schreiber, John Slattery, Billy Crudup, Stanley Tucci, Len Cariou, Neal Huff, Jamey Sheridan, Michael Cyril Creighton and Jimmy LeBlanc. Spotlight is edited rigorously by longtime collaborator Tom McArdle (The Station Agent, The Visitor and Win Win), while Josh Singer wrote the script. Wendy Chuck, Alexander Payne's costume designer for Nebraska, The Descendants, Sideways, About Schmidt and Election, was added to the mix.
Liev Schreiber as Marty Baron: "You have someone with an objective eye ..."
McCarthy told me of the role producers Nicole Rocklin and Blye Pagon Faust played, what motivated Marty Baron, and dressing for Spotlight at the dinner organised by Peggy Siegal.

Consistently gripping, Tom McCarthy's Spotlight tells the true story of an investigation by the Boston Globe newspaper that had far-ranging implications. The film serves as a tribute to the power of the press, as well as a warning sign for the future of journalism in the public interest. Actor turned filmmaker McCarthy made a trio of impressive character pieces (The Station Agent, The Visitor, Win Win) before stumbling with the Adam Sandler-starring The Cobbler, a good-faith attempt to make something lighter and carefree. But he returns to his strengths with this picture. Spotlight neither glamorizes nor demonizes the press. It includes the shining moments yes, but also the mistakes that are inevitably made in the pursuit of truth. The focus here is on four investigative...

John Slattery has been working non-stop since the late 1980s, but you’d be hard-pressed to name a character he’s played aside from 'Mad Men’s" glib advertising executive Roger Sterling. Slattery’s stellar portrayal of a debonair man with a cool exterior and restless soul captivated audiences and turned the journeyman actor into a star.
Now that "Mad Men" has signed off, the challenge for the 53-year-old is to find roles suited to his understated, yet undeniable, talent. He does just that in this month’s heralded drama Spotlight, which wowed audiences and critics at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival and should be in the mix for the year’s Best Picture Oscar.

The new movie Spotlight begins inside a South Boston police station in 1976, where a Catholic bishop is counseling a distraught mother who may or may not bring charges against the priest accused of molesting her son. According to the desk sergeant outside the witness room, the bishop is in the station to “help out,” which in practical terms means not-so-subtly reminding the mother of all the good the church has done and continues to do that could presumably be undone if she pursues legal and very public recourse, as well as offering his hushed assurances that the offending priest will be dealt with and the crime her child has endured will never, ever happen again. Outside the witness room, a police officer speculates to the sergeant about the developing situation that “It’s gonna be hard to keep the papers away from the arraignment.” The sergeant shrugs and shakes his head.

When Tom McCarthy, a preppy, generically handsome white guy, gets stopped on the street, it’s usually by people who think he went to high school with them or perhaps was in their sailing class. You might know his name from the excellent modest-budget adult dramas he’s written and directed: The Station Agent, The Visitor, Win Win, and his latest, Spotlight, which seems a shoo-in for a Best Picture nomination. (We’ll get to his one clunker, 2014’s The Cobbler, later.) He’s also an actor, and if you’ve watched season five of HBO’s The Wire, then you most definitely recognize his face. Likely as one you want to punch. It’s the face of that weasel of a character Scott Templeton, possibly the slimiest, most despicable news reporter in television history.“I think it’s safe to say that I’m a bad guy for most journalists,...

It terms of cinematic comeback stories, there are few quite like the narrative spinning around writer/director Tom McCarthy at the moment. About this time last year he was still reeling from the from the critical reception of his Adam Sandler-starring fantasy/comedy "The Cobbler," which premiered at Tiff to savage reviews. The first ever Writers Lab, a program targeting female screenwriters over 40, took place at Wiawaka on Lake George, New York from September 18-20, 2015.
The group of mentors included Caroline Kaplan ("Boyhood," "Time Out of Mind," "Personal Velocity"), Kirsten Smith ("Legally Blonde," "Ten Things I Hate About You"), Jessica Bendinger ("Bring It On," "Aquamarine"), Mary Jane Skalski ("Win Win," "The Station Agent"),Gina Prince-Bythewood ("Secret Life of Bees," "Beyond the Lights"),Lydia Dean-Pilcher ("The Lunchbox," The Reluctant Fundamentalist"), Meg LeFauve ("Inside Out," "The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys"), and Darnell Martin (“Cadillac Records” and “I Like It Like That”).
Launched by New York Women in Film and Television (Nywift) and Iris, a collective of women filmmakers dedicated to championing the female voice in narrative film, was funded in part by Academy Award-winning actress Meryl Streep, and with the collaboration of the Writers Guild of America East.
Motivated by its screenwriting members who were frustrated with the paucity of development opportunities, Iris founders Elizabeth Kaiden, Kyle Ann Stoke, and Nitza Wilson approached Nywift to support a screenwriting Lab exclusively for this demographic and The Writers Lab came into being.
I spoke with Iris cofounder Elizabeth Kaiden to follow up about the first Writers Lab.
Kouguell: How many screenplays were submitted for consideration?
Kaiden: There were approximately 3,500 screenplays submitted. The selected participants were Sarah Bird ("Daughter of a Daughter of a Queen), Vanessa Carmichael ("The American"). Tracy Charlton ("Raised Up"), Kellen Hertz ("Ashburn"), Anna Hozian ("Anchor Baby"), Lyralen Kaye ("St John the Divine in Iowa"), Jan Kimbrough ("The Glastonbury Cow Party"), Billie Jo Mason ("The Cargo"), Peres Owino ("Basketweaver"), Gretchen Somerfeld ("Face Value"), Janet Stilson ("Jaguar Trail"), and Kim Turner ("It Goes Like This").
Kouguell: What were some highlights from the three-day Lab?
Kaiden: Highlights included the chemistry, warmth and enthusiasm of the group, the bucolic setting in which serious and thoughtful individual meetings between writers and mentors took place, the outstanding, locally sourced, group meals presented by Wiawaka chef Meg, and evening conversations around a bonfire. Oh, and the weather was fabulous.
Kouguell: What is the next step for these writers selected for the Lab?
Kaiden: Writers are all revising their work and communicating with each other. They will use the feedback, resources, references, and friendships they took away from the Lab to further develop their scripts and their opportunities.
Kouguell: In addition to the one-on-one meetings, what other events took place?
Kaiden: There were three panel discussions in which the mentors addressed specific craft issues and general industry insight, informal conversations, group meals, as well as small, directed group conversations led by Nywift Board President Alexis Alexanian to address the challenges writers face in navigating the film world.
Kouguell: What do you feel were some of the most positive outcomes from the weekend in Lake George?
Kaiden: The most exciting outcome of this venture, for me, is uncovering and bringing to public attention the field of women screenwriters, particularly its enormous breadth and depth. The most positive outcomes of the weekend Lab, for me, include the sense of empowerment I believe the Lab gave the writers to continue their work and develop their projects, and the supportive community of writers we all discovered, which can only further our goals of ensuring that more of their stories will reach audiences.
Kouguell: Will the Writers Lab take place again next year?
Kaiden: Yes.
Kouguell: Anything else you’d like to add?
Kaiden: We were excited and delighted by the energy and enthusiasm at the Lab. It felt like an important event. It Was an important event. We discussed and debated issues of theme, tone, craft, structure, character, as well as production, representation, and target markets. The mentors were unbelievably focused, supportive and encouraging. Serious work was done. The writers left feeling, I think, that their voices had been heard, and that they should all continue to tell their stories. I think you will be hearing more from these writers and about these projects. And, although that would have been enough, everyone had a blast.
Award-winning screenwriter and filmmaker, Susan Kouguell teaches screenwriting at Purchase College Suny, and presents international seminars on screenwriting and film.

From Warner Bros. Pictures and Studiocanal comes the romantic drama We Are Your Friends.
The film marks Max Joseph’s (MTV’s “Catfish: The TV Show”) feature film directorial debut, and stars Zac Efron (“Neighbors”), Emily Ratajkowski (“Entourage,” “Gone Girl”), and Wes Bentley (“Interstellar,” “The Hunger Games”).
We Are Your Friends is about what it takes to find your voice. Set in the world of electronic music and Hollywood nightlife, an aspiring 23-year-old DJ named Cole (Efron) spends his days scheming with his childhood friends and his nights working on the one track that will set the world on fire. All of this changes when he meets a charismatic but damaged older DJ named James (Bentley), who takes him under his wing. Things get complicated, however, when Cole starts falling for James’ much younger girlfriend, Sophie (Ratajkowski). With Cole’s forbidden relationship intensifying and his friendships unraveling, he must choose between love,...

Presented by New York Women in Film and Television (Nywift) and Iris, The Writers Lab is funded with the generous support of Academy Award-winning actress Meryl Streep. The one-of-a-kind lab will bring 12 women screenwriters over the age of 40 together with established mentors from the film industry for an intimate gathering and intensive workshop at Wiawaka Center for Women on Lake George, NY from September 18-20, 2015. The Lab is also presented in collaboration with the Writers Guild of America, East.
Being the only program of its kind, The Writers Lab evolved in recognition of the absence of the female voice in narrative film, along with the lack of support for script development. The lab will offer these 12 promising features by women over 40 a springboard to production.
The prestigious group of mentors includes Caroline Kaplan ("Boyhood," "Time Out of Mind," "Personal Velocity"), Kirsten Smith ("Legally Blonde," "Ten Things I Hate About You"), Jessica Bendinger ("Bring It On," "Aquamarine"), Mary Jane Skalski ("Win Win," "The Station Agent"), Gina Prince-Bythewood ("Secret Life of Bees," "Beyond the Lights"), Lydia Dean-Pilcher ( "The Lunchbox,"The Reluctant Fundamentalist"), Meg LeFauve ("Inside Out," "The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys"). During one-on-one meetings they will provide the participants with insightful feedback and will take part in additional events to inspire the artists to hone their creative vision.
The Writers Lab, which was first announced at this year’s Tribeca film festival, received over 3,500 submissions, which encouraged the organizer to support not eight, as they originally had planned, but 12 women in film.
The selected participants are Sarah Bird ("Daughter of a Daughter of a Queen), Vanessa Carmichael ("The American"). Tracy Charlton ("Raised Up"), Kellen Hertz ("Ashburn"), Anna Hozian ("Anchor Baby"), Lyralen Kaye ("St John the Divine in Iowa"), Jan Kimbrough ("The Glastonbury Cow Party"), Billie Mason ("The Cargo"), Peres Owino ("Basketweaver"), Gretchen Somerfeld ("Face Value"), Janet Stilson ("Jaguar Trail"), and Kim Turner ("It Goes Like This").

Tom McCarthy has become a familiar figure over the course of his career in several arenas, whether as a performer on Syriana and HBO’s The Wire, or as a writer for films such as Pixar’s Up and Million Dollar Arm. It is as a filmmaker, however, that McCarthy has gained the most prominence, receiving critical acclaim for his filmmaking debut The Station Agent, which was matched by the praise for his follow-ups The Visitor and Win Win. With his last film hitting theatres early this year, McCarthy immediately got back behind the camera for his next film, titled Spotlight. The film’s synopsis is as follows.
The true story of how the Boston Globe uncovered the massive scandal of child molestation and cover-up within the local Catholic Archdiocese, shaking the entire Catholic Church to its core.
McCarthy once again takes on directing and writing duties for the film,...

After a critically acclaimed start with films like “The Station Agent” and “The Visitor,” actor/director Thomas McCarthy, has hit a few bumps in the road while diversifying his career. The fact is, McCarthy has taken risks. He’s written at Pixar (“Up”) and taken on some challenges (“Win/Win” features some terrific performances, but is a uneven effort), but few would argue that his would-be whimsical fairy tale comedy “The Cobbler” starring Adam Sandler wasn’t a huge misguided folly (and actually, don’t put the blame on Sandler, either). Read More: Interview: Thomas McCarthy Grapples With 'Win Win' But if there are those looking for a McCarthy comeback in a big way, his upcoming picture “Spotlight” looks like the real deal. Co-written by Josh Singer (“The West Wing”) and McCarthy, “Spotlight” stars Mark Ruffalo, Rachel McAdams and Michael Keaton in a true story about a team...
