If the dismal reviews meted out to the new film Bleeding Love prove anything at all, it’s that parents need to think very carefully before starring in movies with their children. This film – which Peter Bradshaw called “a complete toe-curling nepo vanity project” – stars Ewan McGregor and his real-life daughter Clara. And on paper that sounds great. After all, every parent-child relationship is a complex cocktail of affection, antagonism and resentment, and that really should work gangbusters on screen. If you’re going to bring baggage to a role, it may as well be the baggage that literally defines who you are.

Jesse McCartney is a name that pop music lovers from the ’00s will never forget.

Many fans met him as a member of the boyband Dream Street, but he found breakout success as a solo artist. Jesse‘s discography features hits such as “Leavin’,” “Body Language,” and “Just So You Know,” and as a songwriter he helped pen Leona Lewis‘s enduring smash “Bleeding Love.”

That was just the start for him, though, and he’s continued to grow and explore new projects over the years.

On Friday (April 5), he dropped a new EP titled All’s Well. The long-standing distributor, which is known for releasing iconic films like “Drive” and “Malcolm X,” is setting a second quarter release date following the movie’s premiere at a major U.K. festival, which has yet to be announced. “Sasquatch Sunset” is directed and produced by David and Nathan Zellner.

Icon Film Distribution acquired all U.K. and Ireland distribution rights to “Sasquatch Sunset” from Protagonist Pictures after the movie’s Sundance premiere. Bleecker Street is releasing “Sasquatch Sunset” on April 12 in North America. The deal was negotiated between Kaleidoscope CEO Spencer Pollard and Janina Vilsmaier, SVP of Sales at Protagonist Pictures.

Warner Bros.’ upcoming feature starring Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor is getting ready to bloom with a title and release date.

The studio announced Friday that Flowervale Street, the previously untitled feature from filmmaker David Robert Mitchell, is set to open in Imax and will hit theaters May 16, 2025. Maisy Stella and Christian Convery round out the cast for the movie, which currently is keeping its plot details under wraps.

Flowervale Street hails from Warners and Bad Robot. Mitchell, J.J. Abrams, Hannah Minghella, Matt Jackson and Tommy Harper serve as producers.

Mitchell is known for helming It Follows (2014) and Under the Silver Lake (2018). The Hollywood Reporter reported last fall that Mitchell and It Follows star Maika Monroe are reuniting for They Follow, with Neon having introduced the horror hit’s sequel to buyers at AFM.

The result, Bleeding Love, is a wonderful road trip film that takes the familiar tropes of the genre and adds to it.

Director Emma Westenberg’s coming-of-age drama, Bleeding Love, follows a young woman (Clara McGregor) and her estranged father’s (Ewan McGregor) attempts to reconnect during a road trip to Santa Fe, New Mexico. The journey opens old wounds, as the father tries to help his daughter with the drug addiction struggles he believes she has inherited from him.

Speaking with Eye For Film, Westenberg discussed expressing the collective experience of finding oneself and embracing the absurdity of life.

Paul Risker: What compelled you to want to tell this story at this point in time?

Emma Westenberg: When I read the script, I connected to the characters and this journey of reconnecting, but also of finding yourself, because it was a coming-of-age. There were a lot of personal connections for me in the story and both of the actors were already attached...

Addiction, abandonment, guilt, love, and fear are the major themes in the road trip film Bleeding Love. Ewan McGregor stars as a father who’s driving his estranged 20-year-old daughter (played by McGregor’s real-life daughter Clara McGregor) from San Diego to Santa Fe, New Mexico after a drug overdose almost killed her. His plan is simple: try to get to know her again and help her get clean.

They’re not long into the trip when his daughter says she has to go to the bathroom, but she doesn’t actually need a restroom; she’s okay with dropping trou on the side of the road to take care of business. Of course, it’s all a ruse, and she bolts, running off into the California desert with dad chasing after her.

Fortunately for her father, after a few minutes of this she stops and heads back to the pickup truck.

Plot: A gritty, emotional tale about healing familial wounds through re-connection. After a drastic incident in her life, a young woman embarks on an impromptu road trip with her estranged father. En-route to their destination of Santa Fe, New Mexico, the two are forced to confront the issues of their past that have led to their frail relationship, while encountering an eccentric array of characters along the way, in order to bring them closer together again.

Review: Road trips and redemption tales have long been staples of filmmaking, big and small. Stories of connection between estranged family members, struggles with addiction, and stark looks at the landscape of rural America are nothing new, but that does not mean they are not ripe for new stories. Bleeding Love is a film rooted in the familiar tropes of decades worth of movies and yet it still manages to bring something unique to the mix.

Mumbai Film Fest To Honor Luca Guadagnino & Mani Ratnam

The Mumbai Film Festival will honor Luca Guadagnino and Indian filmmaker Mani Ratnam at the upcoming fest, which runs from October 27 to November 5. “Mattel did pay a visit to our office,” said acclaimed producer Christine Vachon during an onstage interview with Deadline at Karlovy Vary Film Festival.
