This week's episode of the Empire Podcast is perhaps less jam-packed and bumper-sized than normal, as we only have one guest. But what a guest, as Marisa Abela — terrific as Amy Winehouse in Sam Taylor-Johnson's Back To Black, the biopic of the iconic singer — talks to Chris Hewitt about the role, from the moment she got it to the gift she received at wrap. That can be found from 45:15 - 1:03:23 (approx).
Then, in the brand new podbooth, Chris is joined by Helen O'Hara, James Dyer, and Alex Godfrey to discuss Helen's attempt to murder James on the recent tour, tackle a listener question about what they like to watch on planes, discuss (most of) the week's movie news (as this was recorded before a ton of news came out of CinemaCon in Vegas; that will be tackled next week), and review Alex Garland's Civil War,...

Jesse McCartney is a name that pop music lovers from the ’00s will never forget.
Many fans met him as a member of the boyband Dream Street, but he found breakout success as a solo artist. Jesse‘s discography features hits such as “Leavin’,” “Body Language,” and “Just So You Know,” and as a songwriter he helped pen Leona Lewis‘s enduring smash “Bleeding Love.”
That was just the start for him, though, and he’s continued to grow and explore new projects over the years.
On Friday (April 5), he dropped a new EP titled All’s Well. The five-song collection features a cheeky collab with Yung Gravy called “Make a Baby.” As the title implies, it’s all about the excitement and challenges of family planning, something that he and wife Katie Peterson are currently familiar with.
Next up, he embarks on the All’s Well Tour in a week.

Ewan McGregor is opening up about why it was “necessary” to have an intimacy coordinator on set during sex scenes with his wife Mary Elizabeth Winstead.
The actor recently opened up to the Radio Times about what it was like starring alongside his wife in the TV miniseries A Gentleman in Moscow, as well as why it can be “odd” filming intimate moments in front of an entire crew.
“We did have an intimacy coordinator!” McGregor said. “It’s still necessary, because it’s also about the crew, and it’s odd to be naked in front of people, it’s odd to be intimate in front of the camera. If you were doing a dance scene, you’d have a choreographer. It’s an important part of the work now, because it’s somebody that the director and actors meet in the middle.”

Ewan McGregor is one of the biggest stars in Hollywood at present. He is, of course, best known for his role as Obi-Wan Kenobi in the Star Wars prequel series and as the star of his own television show by Disney. Aside from being an actor, McGregor is also a father of five, and he has been open about his adoration of them. Combine his love for Star Wars and his children; it is the perfect recipe to prank them, something that his daughter, Clara McGregor, can attest to.
Ewan McGregor has starred in several notable films throughout his career. However, he has become synonymous with the Star Wars films, and his love for the space opera set “in a galaxy far away” knows no bounds.

Playing families on screen is a challenge for any actors. Finding the chemistry between siblings, parents and their kids, and even spouses can be a matter of finding the right combination of talent and connection. Over the years, parents and their children have portrayed fictional dynamics similar to their own, notably Paper Moon starring Ryan and Tatum O’Neal. There are a lot fewer of these movies than you might think. Luckily, rising star Clara McGregor envisioned a film that echoed her relationship with her father, Ewan McGregor, and the actor was more than willing to step in as the dad on screen as well. The result, Bleeding Love, is a wonderful road trip film that takes the familiar tropes of the genre and adds to it.
Bleeding Love tells the story of an unnamed Daughter (Clara McGregor) being driven across the American Southwest by her Father (Ewan McGregor) after she recently overdosed.

Addiction, abandonment, guilt, love, and fear are the major themes in the road trip film Bleeding Love. Ewan McGregor stars as a father who’s driving his estranged 20-year-old daughter (played by McGregor’s real-life daughter Clara McGregor) from San Diego to Santa Fe, New Mexico after a drug overdose almost killed her. His plan is simple: try to get to know her again and help her get clean.
They’re not long into the trip when his daughter says she has to go to the bathroom, but she doesn’t actually need a restroom; she’s okay with dropping trou on the side of the road to take care of business. Of course, it’s all a ruse, and she bolts, running off into the California desert with dad chasing after her.
Fortunately for her father, after a few minutes of this she stops and heads back to the pickup truck.

Plot: A gritty, emotional tale about healing familial wounds through re-connection. After a drastic incident in her life, a young woman embarks on an impromptu road trip with her estranged father. En-route to their destination of Santa Fe, New Mexico, the two are forced to confront the issues of their past that have led to their frail relationship, while encountering an eccentric array of characters along the way, in order to bring them closer together again.
Review: Road trips and redemption tales have long been staples of filmmaking, big and small. Stories of connection between estranged family members, struggles with addiction, and stark looks at the landscape of rural America are nothing new, but that does not mean they are not ripe for new stories. Bleeding Love is a film rooted in the familiar tropes of decades worth of movies and yet it still manages to bring something unique to the mix.

Ewan McGregor will star opposite Anne Hathaway in the untitled adventure feature that David Robert Mitchell is directing for Warner Bros.
Mitchell, the filmmaker best known for the horror hit It Follows, wrote the script and is producing alongside J.J. Abrams and Hannah Minghella of Bad Robot. Matt Jackson is also producing via his Jackson Pictures banner.
Logline details are being kept in the cage, but sources say it is described as being a family adventure set in the 1980s that involves dinosaurs. Hathaway and McGregor play the parents. The kids roles are yet to be cast.
Jake Weiner and Chris Bender of Good Fear Content will serve as exec producers. Sheila Walcott and Zach Hamby are overseeing the project for Warners.
McGregor will next be seen in Showtime and Paramount Global’s adaptation of the Amor Towles novel, A Gentleman in Moscow, on which he served as executive producer.

It's difficult to encapsulate the importance of Lana and Lilly Wachowski as directors. While the queer crime thriller "Bound" marked the sisters' directorial debut, it was their 1999 hit "The Matrix" that completely changed the landscape of science-fiction cinema forever. In 2021, the franchise's fourth installment, "The Maxtrix Resurrections" was released, but the film was a solo directorial venture from Lana Wachowski. Lilly has not directed a film since 2015's "Jupiter Ascending," but spent time directing season 1 of "Sense 8" and serving as the showrunner for "Work in Progress." The former was yet another sci-fi epic, but the latter is a sweet, semi-autobiographical queer dramedy starring Abby McEnany. It seems that working on this series must have inspired Lilly to continue similar creative ventures because according to a report from Collider, her next feature film is "Trash Mountain" starring Caleb Hearon.
Hearon co-wrote the film with Ruby Caster ("Bleeding Love"), and the...

First introduced to the world at the 2022 Tribeca Festival, the film marks the directorial debut of Paul Dektor, who worked from a script by Theodore Melfi (Hidden Figures). Pic is based on a true story from Chicago Public Radio’s This American Life and follows Phil Loder (Dinklage), a twice divorced, frustrated, underpaid professor of economics, whose grand dream of home ownership is tragically out of reach. When an incredible, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity comes his way, Phil strikes a deal with Astrid Finnelli (MacLaine), a lonely, childless, near-death widow who offers her sprawling estate for pennies. But Phil quickly learns the deal is too good to be true and the American dream is not quite what it used to be.

Ewan McGregor was “very reluctant” to play Obi Wan-Kenobi in “Star Wars,” he admitted.
“It wasn’t a done deal for me. I didn’t think it was at all who I was. I believed, at that point, I was a Danny Boyle actor. ‘The Beach’ was more important and I meant it, it wasn’t flippant. I did ask a lot of people for advice.”
“I am happy that I am this character for a lot of people, but when these films came out, they were so disliked. That was hard. The first one was panned and we still had to make another two! It was weird to be in a film that was hammered.”
He enjoyed making ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi,” though.
“I would love to do the second season, but there’s no talk of it yet. There is a lot going on at Disney.”

Being a girl dad has its problems, especially when your daughter thinks you’re a prick. As “Bleeding Love” begins, a teenage girl shoots a jaundiced look at her father who is driving her somewhere in the desolate West. She can’t hear him because her headphones are blaring “I’m Yer Dad,” a not even remotely subtle noise pop song by Grlwood that includes the lyric, “Feed me food while I watch sports / In my man cave made for sports / Whores in my porn, porn in my sports … ’Cause I’m your dad.”
Dad studies her without comprehension. She is his daughter, but she is an undiscovered country to him. He vacated his fatherly duties during his booze years, and now he must deal with an estranged beautiful daughter whose heart stopped beating last night during an overdose. He pulls his pickup to the side of the road so she can pee,...

There’s a fine line between stylized direction and direction that is so fussy that it gets in the way of a film’s actors. Unfortunately for Emma Westenberg’s directorial debut, “You Sing Loud, I Sing Louder,” that’s a line she does not navigate successfully. She’s not helped much by the underdeveloped script by Ruby Caster, who shares story credits with Vera Bulder and star-producer Clara McGregor (“American Horror Story”).

Before Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie,” there was “Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story.”
“Mattel did pay a visit to our office,” said acclaimed producer Christine Vachon during an onstage interview with Deadline at Karlovy Vary Film Festival. Back in 1987, she was helping out on the Todd Haynes and Cynthia Schneider-produced movie. The now-banned film, dedicated to Carpenter’s tragic life and her untimely passing, featured dolls instead of actors.
“Todd bought all these toys in garage sales. There were Barbies, but also all these Barbie rip-offs, so he was able to prove to Mattel that it was off brand,” Vachon said.
While he appeased the famous company, Carpenter’s family was less pleased, filing a lawsuit against the director.
“The reason he didn’t seek permission for these songs was because he didn’t expect it would blow up the way it did,” Vachon said. “The movie made a tremendous splash,...

Superheroes, making moviegoing a bigger event and the Hollywood writers strike were among the topics of a Monday masterclass featuring legendary independent film producer Christine Vachon that was part of the second day of the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival’s Eastern Promises Industry Day program.
One of the questions Vachon received was whether cinemas are doing enough to cultivate the moviegoing experience and audience. “What the theaters are trying to do is create a bigger experience,” she said. “It’s about creating environments that make the experience feel more like an event.”
She added: “I know in Europe this is an old hat, but in America, the idea of eating a meal or having a drink in a movie theater is still relatively new and creating an event where your seat is extraordinarily comfortable with the projections actually decent.” Vachon then joked that “I don’t know if in...

Brave is the man who will sign up for a real-life father-daughter road movie set in the aftermath of an acrimonious divorce, but Ewan McGregor has no regrets about pairing up with his eldest child — by his first wife — for You Sing Loud, I Sing Louder, which screened as a tribute to the actor in Karlovy Vary. Set in a dreamlike American West, and very far removed from the specifics of the McGregors’ own personal situation, it finds a reformed alcoholic dad trying to reconnect with his offspring after collecting her from hospital. She thinks they’re off to visit an artist friend of her father’s, but the truth is that, in a bid to absolve himself of many years’ worth of guilt, he’s taking her to rehab.

Ewan McGregor discussed blockbuster movies, why he is currently sporting a mustache, and hopefully making more movies with his daughter Clara during a Sunday press conference at the 57th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival for Emma Westenberg-directed You Sing Loud, I Sing Louder, in which the McGregors star opposite each other.
The daughter and father both predicted more collaborations on Sunday. You Sing Loud, I Sing Louder premiered at South by Southwest. It is a road trip drama, inspired by the duo’s real-life stories. Clara co-wrote the script with Vera Bulder and Ruby Caster. “I’m just anticipating them writing me lots of roles,” Ewan McGregor told the press. “It’s a very good way to keep her old dad in work.”
With the actor having moved between tentpole and smaller independent movies throughout his career, he could also provide insight into some of the differences for talent.

He was joined by his daughter Clara McGregor, his mother, and partner Mary Elizabeth Winstead.

Ewan McGregor not only received a lifetime achievement award, but also much love and adoration during a brief, but emotional ceremony at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival on Saturday night.
During the event at the big cinema celebration in the Czech spa town, organizers and fans feted the Scottish actor, director and producer as the President’s Award for lifetime achievement was bestowed upon him. On Friday’s opening night of the fest, Alicia Vikander received the same award, while Russell Crowe was honored with the festival’s Crystal Globe.
A warm welcome to McGregor by a host was followed by a particularly well-received career highlights reel that repeatedly drew laughs and cheers for scenes from the likes of the Star Wars universe, I Love You Phillip Morris and, of course, Trainspotting.

The sun was out earlier in the day, and the stars, including Alicia Vikander, husband Michael Fassbender, Russell Crowe and competition jury member Patricia Clarkson came out for the Friday evening gala opening ceremony of the 57th edition of the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival.
The black-tie opening event for what has been called Central Europe’s biggest cinema party was followed by a free performance by British electronic band Morcheeba just outside the venue, the Hotel Thermal, which serves as the festival’s headquarters. The Karlovy Vary Film Festival, which takes place in an elegant spa resort in the Bohemian region of the Czech Republic, is set to get political during its 57th edition, but in a subtle way.
“I am not sure if you can even use the word ‘subtle’ when talking about politics, but it doesn’t always have to be in your face. While the main competition features many stories about people trying to return home or simply find their place in the world, he adds, the festival will also celebrate Iran with a separate section “Another Birth. Iranian Cinema Here and Now.” “Before our consultant Lorenzo Esposito came up with this name,...
