It’s important to talk about the groundbreaking films Black Americans made or acted in because they paved the way for Black films and actors today. It’s important to recognize films that have Black actors or creators because they are frequently overlooked by the industry and the general audience. Award shows like the Oscars are in a way helping keep Black films silenced because they are slow to expand their diversity efforts. An audience needs to be exposed to different types of stories in film because diversity exists in real life so it should be reflected on screen. Before joining The Walking Dead universe as Pearl Thorne in The Ones Who Live, Lesley-Ann Brandt starred in a variety of roles for TV and film. The South African actor is well-known for taking on projects in horror, fantasy, and other traditionally “nerdy” genres, having appeared in shows like Gotham, The Librarians, and most notably Lucifer.
With a variety of roles under her belt, here’s where else you’ve seen Lesley-Ann Brandt before.
Lucifer
As mentioned previously, Brandt is most known for her role as Lucifer’s (Tom Ellis) right-hand Mazikeen in the hit TV series Lucifer. Mazikeen a.k.a. Maze is known for her fierce loyalty, though she sometimes struggles to adapt her brash nature to the human world. Brandt does a phenomenal job of portraying Maze’s growth from demon with a penchant for sadistic torture to a slightly more vulnerable and human demon with a penchant for sadistic torture.

A year and a half ago, Get Out, Us, and Nope writer/director Jordan Peele‘s production company Monkeypaw Productions acquired the genre film pitch Goat from writers Zack Akers and Skip Bronkie, the plan being that Peele would be producing Goat as part of Monkeypaw’s overall deal with Universal Pictures. Earlier this month, we learned that Goat is finally moving forward, with Marlon Wayans (Scary Movie) signing on to star in the sports-related horror film as the titular greatest-of-all-time athlete. Now Deadline reports that Wayans is being joined in the cast by Tyriq Withers, whose previous credits include Horror Noire, Senior Year, Tell Me Lies, The Game, and an episode of Atlanta.
Justin Tipping – who made his feature directorial debut with the 2016 drama Kicks – will be directing the film.
Akers and Bronkie’s script centers on a promising young athlete who is invited to train with a team’s retiring star.

Wes Craven's 1991 horror hit "The People Under The Stairs" evades easy description. It's a movie that's at once chaotic, insightful, campy, hilarious, horrifying, and weird as hell. There are images in the movie that are impossible to unsee, and ideas about race and capitalism that felt prescient in the '90s and are more relevant than ever now.
"The People Under The Stairs" has been overdue for a remake and it's only fitting that it's finally in the works courtesy of the new master of social commentary-filled thrillers, Jordan Peele. Peele's production company Monkeypaw is at work on an update to Craven's original, and while there's still a lot we don't know about "The People Under the Stairs," we're creeping into the shadows to bring you all the details we can on this fresh take on a very freaky story. Here's everything we know so far.

Three years have gone by since it was announced that Get Out, Us, and Nope director Jordan Peele had signed on to produce a reboot of Wes Craven’s 1991 film The People Under the Stairs (watch it Here) for Universal Pictures, and now we finally have an update to share about the project. While the reboot is still described as being in “early development”, Deadline reports that Doom Patrol and Night Sky writer Ezra Claytan Daniels has signed on to write the screenplay.
Peele will be producing The People Under the Stairs with Win Rosenfeld through their company Monkeypaw Productions. Peele and Rosenfeld previously produced (and co-wrote) the 2021 reboot of the Candyman franchise.

In 2018, Mariama Diallo shared her short film Hair Wolf with audiences at that year’s Sundance Film Festival, and this year, she returned to the fest with her debut feature film, Master, Starring Regina Hall and Zoe Renee, Master’s story is centered around the horrifying experiences of two different Black women navigating their way through an academic space steeped in the traditions of racism and founded in white supremacy, and the harm that these ideals can have when they’re not properly addressed and destroyed.
Daily Dead recently had the opportunity to speak with Diallo about the project, and during our conversation, she discussed how her own personal experiences, as well as her mother’s, helped shape the story of Master. "In most families, the danger doesn't come from some stranger – danger comes from someone you already know..." Shudder has unveiled the trailer for a horror anthology film titled Horror Noire, a showcase of six different stories of Black horror. "Six stories, one film. Experience the next chapter of Black horror." This is a spin-off feature inspired by the outstanding documentary with the same title: Horror Noire: A History of Black Horror (which I highly recommend watching). The six stories featured in the anthology are titled: Daddy, Bride Before You, Brand of Evil, The Lake, Sundown, and Fugue State. The casts include Lesley-Ann Brandt, Luke James, Erica Ash, Brandon Mychal Smith, Sean Patrick Thomas, Peter Stormare, Malcolm Barrett, and Rachel True, among many others. With new and adapted stories by Tananarive Due, Steven Barnes, Victor Lavalle, Shernold Edwards, Al Letson and Ezra C. Daniels. I'm always down for more creative horror!
