Nicely Entertainment has picked up global rights to director Ate de Jong’s romantic drama “My Country Heart,” which features 17 original songs.
“We’re thrilled to be representing ‘My Country Heart.’ The film offers amazing original music, uplifting romance and is certain to find its stride with global audiences,” Vanessa Shapiro, Nicely’s CEO said in a statement. “Additionally, Director Ate de Jong is an incredible filmmaker with an impressive career. His hit comedy ‘Drop Dead Fred’ is now regarded as a groundbreaking picture dealing deftly and comically with complex issues.
“With ‘My Country Heart,’ De Jong has again made a cutting-edge film that takes an unorthodox look at ambitious young artists struggling to face the compromises required in the tough world of show business. But De Jong brings out the idealism and romance of the story, while taking a scathing look at the realities of today’s reality TV.

Indie musical “Heart Strings” will have its Los Angeles premiere June 30 at American Cinematheque’s Loz Feliz Theater. Director Ate de Jong (“Drop Dead Fred”) co-wrote the film with Steven Gaydos, Variety executive VP, Global Content, who is also co-producing.
“It’s a great honor to screen at the American Cinematheque. And especially to play the film at their Los Feliz location where ‘Heart Strings’ first began as a screenplay decades ago when I lived there after working on a Roger Corman film in Georgia,” Gaydos said. “Fans of 1970s American indie cinema might be surprised to find that Ate de Jong has just made an audience-engaging film with the subversive spirit and maverick attitude of that time. It only took 50 years to get the job done, which I hope makes Francis Coppola feel better about ‘Megalopolis!’”

Paul McCartney‘s daughter, Stella McCartney, has become a fashion designer who’s famous in her own right. She once named her favorite songs. One was a song from The Beatles’ The White Album and another was a Beatles cover. Interestingly, she discussed how music influences her as a fashion designer.
Stella McCartney praised a song from The Beatles’ ‘The White Album’ for being poetic
During a 2017 interview with the BBC, McCartney discussed her favorite songs of all time. They included Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” Talking Heads’ “Road to Nowhere,” George Michael’s “Faith,” David Bowie’s “Starman,” The Beach Boys’ “God Only Knows,” Phyllis Dillon’s cover of The Beatles’ “Something,” and Louis Armstrong’s “A Kiss to Build a Dream On.” Classic rock apparently means a lot to her!
The only Fab Four original she put on the list was The Beatles’ “Blackbird” from The White Album.

Watching “Stop Making Sense” in 4K IMAX at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival was a transporting, immersive, joyous experience. Some of us also saw the 1983 Talking Heads concert tour promoting their fifth album, “Speaking in Tongues”; when Jonathan Demme saw the show, the director asked if he could document the concerts. The band, who admired Demme films such as “Caged Heat” and “Melvin and Howard,” loved the idea.
Demme shot the film over three performances in December 1983 at the Pantages Theater in Los Angeles. Four months later, it was in theaters and grossed $5 million. Forty years later, the band holds the film rights. They worked with A24 to release the restored 4K version for its exclusive IMAX run on September 22 before heading to conventional theaters September 29 around the world.

Road to Nowhere: Von Trotta Presents the Basics on Bachmann
Throughout her career, Margarethe Von Trotta, a key figure from the New German Wave of the 1970s, has often focused on the recuperations of specific iconic women, from Rosa Luxembourg to Hildegard von Bingen to Hannah Arendt, usually with exceptional results. Her latest focuses on esteemed Austrian writer Ingeborg Bachmann and her toxic relationship with Swiss writer Max Frisch in Ingeborg Bachmann – Journey into the Desert, detailing their relationship in the late 1950s.
Unfortunately, for those unfamiliar with Bachmann, this isn’t a helpful entry point, dealing specifically, and through surprisingly superficial flourishes, never conjuring either the actual impetus of this relationship or a clear portrait of the artist herself.…...

Netflix announced Monday that Aziz Ansari’s comedy series Master of None will return to the streaming service for its third season on May 23rd.
The first trailer of Season 3 — which tonally seems more like an independent film than an acclaimed comedy series — focuses on Lena Waithe’s Denise and her relationship with Alicia, played by Naomi Ackie. The season was co-written by Waithe and Ansari, who also directed the “Moments in Love” episode; Ansari’s Dev character also appears briefly in the trailer.

One of rock’s great questions, a rung or two below Are You Experienced? and maybe Which One’s Pink? but still right up there, has got to be Why A Big Suit? David Byrne asked himself that in an early-mtv-era promo for Jonathan Demme’s brilliant Talking Heads concert film Stop Making Sense, posing a query about an image – the angular frontman all Dada’d up in a gigantic gray, V-cut suit – that itself was a signature pose of the 1980s.
His answer had a bit to do with a love of geometric shapes but mostly reflected a desire to make his head seem small – a way, he suggested, of highlighting the physical, rather than the cerebral, in music. Of course the very contemplation of the matter funked things up more than a little; as, it turned out, shrunken heads are about as good at escaping attention as whispers.

Aziz Ansari wastes no time in his new Netflix standup special before addressing a woman’s accusation of sexual misconduct.
“There’s times I felt scared, there’s times I felt humiliated, there’s times I felt embarrassed, and ultimately, I just felt terrible that this person felt this way,” he said at the top of the hour-long set. “And after a year or so, I just hope it was a step forward. It moved things forward for me, made me think about a lot. I hope I’ve become a better person.”
The “Parks and Recreation” vet said he felt it was important to be upfront with the audience because “it’s important to me that you know how I feel about that whole thing before we share this night together.”

1. “Orange Is the New Black” Season 7 (available July 26)
Why Should I Watch? Well, Season 7 marks the end of “Orange Is the New Black,” which either makes for a compelling argument to get caught up or a reasonable rationale to avoid it altogether. Speaking to the first point, Jenji Kohan’s landmark Netflix original has helped usher in a more diversified TV space, draw attention to a problematic prison system, and provide truckloads of Emmys to the very worthy Uzo Aduba. Toss in the fact it helped elevate more than a few key voices set to shape television’s future, including Stephen Falk (“You’re the Worst”) and S.J. Clarkson (who’s helming the upcoming “Game of Thrones” spinoff), and it’s been a significant series since it debuted in mid-2013. But it’s also a long series. Each season consists of 13 hour-long episodes, and the most recent entries have highlighted Netflix’s bloating problems.

Aziz Ansari is coming back to TV screens. And soon.
In a surprise announcement, Netflix revealed on Monday that the latest stand-up special from the “Master of None” co-creator will be dropping Tuesday, July 9. “Aziz Ansari Right Now,” his fifth comedy special, was filmed as part of the Brooklyn performances of his ongoing international tour, “Road to Nowhere.”
It’s Ansari’s first project available to the public since the release of “Master of None” Season 2. Shortly after the awards circuit tour ended in early 2018, a controversial article detailing sexual misconduct put the show and Ansari’s career on hiatus. According to reports from those same Brooklyn shows back in May, Ansari addresses those allegations as part of his hour-long set. Earlier shows in the tour, even when not referring to the incident directly, did seem to showcase a contrite Ansari, even when couched in a comedy context.

Time spent in a modern war zone can be traumatic for participant and observer alike, yet across continents and cultures, the shared experiences of living and loving in the wake of such experiences can be startlingly similar. This is multi-faceted and overarching theme woven throughout Ben Lawrence’s sensitive and affecting new Australian drama “Hearts and Bones,” an impressive narrative feature debut from the winner of last year’s Sydney Film Festival documentary prize for “Ghosthunter.”
Lawrence’s thoughtful drama also casts an illuminating light on the current hot-button issue of immigrants to Australia and their place in the social fabric, specifically in the Western Sydney suburbs in which it is filmed. The film’s second-place finish in the narrative section of the fest’s audience award (behind Samuel Van Grinsven’s “Sequin in a Blue Room”) suggests it struck a chord with traditionally partisan Aussie audiences, and with proper handling,...

Nobody starts a string band to make a quick buck. Then again nobody can accuse Greensky Bluegrass of taking any shortcuts. The Michigan-bred quintet, known for marathon live shows that have earned a continuously swelling Grateful Dead-like fanbase, have been gigging relentlessly for nearly two decades, using the best parts of bluegrass — hard-driving rhythms, speedy solos, ascendant harmonies — as a foundation for a broadly inclusive sound that features wide-open psychedelia and sturdy Americana songcraft.

Monte Hellman and Kona. Photo courtesy of Monte Hellman. Two years back, Monte Hellman invited me up to his house to sip vodka tonics in the dark and watch the new restoration of Ride in the Whirlwind (1966), one of a pair of earnest Westerns he made in collaboration with his longtime friend Jack Nicholson. He didn’t know it at the time, but that day was my birthday—and there was no other way I would have preferred to spend it.On a Saturday morning this July, I went up yet again to the Hollywood Hills to pay another visit to Hellman. Best known as the director of Two-Lane Blacktop (1971), a reaction to Easy Rider (1969) and the mother of all existential road movies, Hellman now lives a rather quiet life in a sweet, sequestered hillside bungalow; maybe he’s always preferred solitude and solemnity, but most of the time he...

Maybe the wild premiere left me Fubar, but the opening of “Legion’s” second episode gave off major “Apocalypse Now” vibes. David’s ominous, deadened voiceover recalled Martin Sheen’s war-torn work in Francis Ford Coppola’s classic. The song — “Road to Nowhere” by the Talking Heads — served as a modern stand-in for The Doors’ “The End,” which would be far too on-the-nose (and overused) to be repurposed yet again, but the notes guided a slow, seemingly peaceful riverboat ride; an iconic wartime image, countlessly repurposed in many an action film, but never so effectively alluding to the horrors hidden on each riverbed as in the Oscar-winning 1979 film.

And there are horrors lurking in “Legion” — literal and figurative. As sunlight shone through the trees above, men in “black masks, boots, and the one they called, ‘The Eye,...

A mysterious Englishman who calls himself “John Doe” (Vinnie Jones) hires a professional hit man. The target? A drug cartel leader named Sonny “Sundown” Garcia (Michael Rene Walton), a rich, powerful and dangerous career criminal who “stole everything I ever loved” according to John Doe.
The movie begins with the hit taking place, in full view of a crowd of dancers at Sonny’s night club. This occurs, even though the hit man states he does not make any hits in front of witnesses. John Doe also insists the hit be done with a particular weapon that Sonny used in the past, the incident the movie keeps flashing back to, which “took everything I ever loved.” This is all about revenge you see.

Phoenix Nights star Toby Foster has downplayed rumours of a full Phoenix Nights reunion, claiming that he hasn't heard anything from Peter Kay about the show returning.
Foster, who played Les Campbell from the Phoenix Club backing band Les Alanos in the early '00s Channel 4 sitcom, revealed that he had been inundated with messages since Kay revealed that "big news" was coming very soon about the show.
The BBC radio presenter and comic said that he had spoken to Kay recently and he hadn't mentioned anything about the show. He also retweeted a comment from a follower, who suggested that if the show was coming back, he wasn't involved.
Bloody Hell. Loads of messages. Hand on heart, I have not heard a whisper about a new series of Pn. And I spoke to Peter last week.

Peter Kay is expected to announce the return of his classic TV sitcom Phoenix Nights very soon.
The comedian confirmed at a charity event at the weekend that fans of the comedy could look forward to an announcement about the show within the next 10 days.
It is rumoured that Kay is planning a stage show and third series for 2015.
"I am going to be making a big announcement about Phoenix Nights sometime in the next 10 days, so fans need to be watching out for that," Kay told the audience at Blackpool Opera House during a fundraiser for Salford Women's Aid Charity.
Phoenix Nights ran for two series between 2000 and 2001. Its spin-off Max and Paddy's Road To Nowhere had one series on Channel 4 in 2004.
The Bolton stand-up has previously spoken about his plans for a third series, claiming that he had always been jotting down ideas for more episodes.

In his continually eccentric series of extracurricular activities, Steven Soderbergh has posted a black and white version of Steven Spielberg's Raiders of the Lost Ark. Here's what he has to say about why:
"So I want you to watch this movie and think only about staging, how the shots are built and laid out, what the rules of movement are, what the cutting patterns are. See if you can reproduce the thought process that resulted in these choices by asking yourself: why was each shot—whether short or long—held for that exact length of time and placed in that order? Sounds like fun, right? It actually is. To me. Oh, and I’ve removed all sound and color from the film, apart from a score designed to aid you in your quest to just study the visual staging aspect. Wait, What? How Could You Do This? Well, I...

Jack Nicholson in the 1966 western The Shooting.
In 1966, the maverick American director Monte Hellman (Two-Lane Blacktop, Road to Nowhere) conceived of two westerns at the same time – The Shooting and Ride in the Whirlwind.
Dreamlike and gritty by turns, the two films would prove their maker’s adeptness at brilliantly deconstructing genre. As shot back-to-back for famed producer Roger Corman (The Wild Angels), they feature overlapping casts and crews, including Jack Nicholson (Chinatown) in two of his meatiest early roles.
The Shooting, about a motley assortment of loners following a mysterious wanted man through a desolate frontier; and Ride in the Whirlwind, about a group of cowhands pursued by vigilantes for crimes they did not commit, are rigorous, artful, and wholly unconventional journeys into the American West.

They will also take part in salmon fishing in Scotland and surf the Severn Bore in Somerset.

Freddie Flintoff slips on a cowboy hat to meet a cattle rancher in this clip from Flintoff's Road to Nowhere.
The cricket star cycles along the Trans-Amazonian highway with journalist Rob Penn in the new show, in an attempt to learn more about deforestation.
The duo both meet a cattle rancher in this clip, as beef farming is partly responsible for the removal of parts of the Amazon rainforest.
"There doesn't seem to be that many cows," Flintoff remarks at one point, while at another he is astonished by the fact that the bulls have "knackers like coconuts".
However, he appears to have respect for the ranchers, saying: "It's dangerous work, this. It's quite intimidating, stood here."

Paddy McGuinness has given hope to fans of Max & Paddy and Phoenix Nights, confirming that he is writing again with his close friend and former comedy partner Peter Kay.
During an appearance on This Morning, McGuinness said that the pair were only "thinking" about teaming up, but, when pressed further, confessed that they had "written something".
The pair last teamed up as Max and Paddy in 2004, when they produced a single series of the Phoenix Nights spinoff.
It's been 12 years since Phoenix Nights aired on Channel 4.
Kay said in 2012 that he ended Phoenix Nights after only two series because he was worried about the quality waning. However, he did also reveal that he was constantly writing down ideas for fresh episodes.

The American Midwest's spare, glum beauty is conjured in Alexander Payne's lugubrious road comedy
At the start of Nebraska, Woody Grant (Bruce Dern), confused and old, is seen slouching doggedly along a highway on the outskirts of his town. "Hey, bud, where ya headed?" asks a solicitous cop. But where can Woody possibly be headed? It takes just one look at the nondescript urban expanse; at the chimney belching out fumes in the background; at the sign reading "Billings City Limits" (that's Billings, Montana) to know he can't be going anywhere special. This is the back of beyond, right? And Woody's surely on the proverbial Road to Nowhere.
In fact, Woody is determined to get to Lincoln, Nebraska, where he's convinced that a million dollars are his for the claiming. It's usual in American cinema to assume that areas such as the stretch between Billings and Lincoln, some 800 miles away,...

The 13th annual Melbourne Underground Film Festival, held back on Aug. 24 to Sept. 1, shined an especially bright spotlight on New Irish Low Budget Cinema, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that the fest gave its top awards to a film from the land of Éire.
Terry McMahon’s crime thriller Charlie Casanova won for Best Film and Best Director, and star Emmet Scanlon tied for Best Actor with Shiver‘s John Jarrat.
Despite all the love given to Ireland, this year’s Muff didn’t ignore its home countrymen, either. Local filmmaker Chris Sun’s latest, Daddy’s Little Girl, also took home multiple awards, including Best SFX, Best Actress for Allira Jacques and tied for the Special Jury Prize with Donna McRae’s Johnny Ghost.
Also, as usual, Muff gave out a wide variety of awards to multiple films. Some of the other winners include Daryl Stoneage...

The Silversun Pickups have asked Mitt Romney's campaign to stop using their song "Panic Switch" at events. The band has issued a cease-and-desist order and released a statement Wednesday, roundly denouncing Romney and his campaign.
"We don't like people going behind our backs, using our music without asking, and we don't like the Romney campaign," frontman Brian Aubert wrote. "We're nice, approachable people. We won't bite. Unless you're Mitt Romney!"
A spokeswoman for the campaign told the Associated Press that while the campaign did not ask for permission for the song, it was allowed to play it under a "blanket licensing agreement." The campaign also said it would not play "Panic Switch" again.
The band suggested that Romney's use of the single was ironic because "he is inadvertently playing a song that describes his whole campaign."
Here's the song's chorus, as posted on online lyric websites:

Any trailer that uses the song ‘Road to Nowhere’ by Talking Heads is just fine in my books, so here we have Seeking A Friend For The End Of The World starring Steve Carell and Keira Knightley, that’s an odd combination I must say. The movie is rated R which is great news, because if I knew the world was going to end, I would let the expletives fly!
The cast includes Adam Brody (The Oc), Rob Corddry (Children’s Hospital), Gillian Jacobs (Community), Derek Luke (Antoine Fisher), Melanie Lynskey (Away We Go), T.J. Miller (Cloverfield), Patton Oswalt (Big Fan) and William Petersen (CSI).
Set in a too-near future, a man searches for a meaningful connection as humanity’s last days are at hand. Can he find his greatest love at the worst possible time? As the respective journeys of Dodge and Penny converge, the...
