Welcome to another look back at the biggest hits of 2023. Today, we’ll look through the documentaries and docu-series that picked up the most points in the Netflix top 10s throughout the year.
This list is compiled with data from FlixPatrol, which tracks the daily top 10s in over 90 countries globally. Their data provides a daily snapshot of what’s trending in the TV and movie list by providing points to each title that features. Although we love their data, it’s neither perfect nor an exact measurement of viewership. Netflix does provide its own data on this front, but it doesn’t allow us to paint a big picture of what was watched most in 2023 as it stands.
Because documentaries feature in the movie lists and docu-series feature in the TV list, we’ll split them separately. We’ll have a look at the documentaries and docu-series to do best globally first,...

Amblin TV has built its reputation over the past three decades as one of the industry’s busiest boutiques, producing scripted series across all major platforms that range from popcorn to prestige.
But in recent years, there’s been a new storytelling target for Amblin TV chiefs Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey, who have headed Steven Spielberg’s TV production banner (previously DreamWorks TV) for more than 20 years. Amblin TV has moved aggressively into documentary feature and docu-series arena. It’s a development motivated by business necessity but also the desire to add more colors and canvases to the overall Amblin TV palette.
This year, the company fielded a surprise hit with a nature documentary for Netflix, “Life on Our Planet,” which topped the streamers’ domestic viewing charts for multiple weeks after its release in late October. Warner Bros. Unscripted Television, DC and R.J. Cutler’s production hub This Machine are developing a documentary about the iconic Mad magazine.
Oscar-and Emmy-winning director Jessica Yu will direct the untitled docu about the 71-year-old humor brand.
The feature-length doc will explore the origins of the magazine, as well as its irreverent, independent, and often incisive humor. Yu will also examine how Mad became a staple of American satire for generations and encouraged readers to question authority. Mad magazine, which is owned by DC, has authorized the doc and granted the filmmaking team exclusive access to its archives.
In April Al Jaffee, the cartoonist who gave Mad magazine its iconic back page by creating the publication’s fold-in feature, died at the age of 102. In 1964, Jaffee’s fold-in was featured for the first time in Mad magazine, marking the start of the methodic flip-through that Mad readers would do for decades.

“The Fall of the House of Usher” opened in second place the Netflix Top 10 English-Language TV chart during the Oct. 9-15 viewing window as it conjured up 6.3 million total views in its first four days of availability. Hailing from “The Haunting of Hill House” creator Mike Flanagan and based on the writings of Edgar Allen Poe, the chilling limited series was undoubtedly pushed by the spooky season as viewers watched the Usher family dynasty rise and crumble.
David and Victoria Beckham’s Netflix docuseries continued to remain in the No. 1 spot this week, pulling 11.6 million views in its first full week of availability. From director Fisher Stevens and producer John Battsek, the documentary offered an intimate look at the soccer phenom, telling his fans who he truly is behind closed doors. In the previous week, the documentary opened to 12.4 million total views.

If you expect the Netflix docuseries “Big Vape: The Rise and Fall of Juul” to be the ultimate takedown of controversial e-cigarettes, think again.
The four-part series, directed by R.J. Cutler and based on Time reporter Jamie Ducharme’s book “Big Vape: The Incendiary Rise of Juul,” examines all the mistakes Juul executives made, including marketing the e-cigarette to millennials. The series also suggests that the product might very well be a better option than conventional cigarettes.
Stanford graduate students and Juul founders Adam Bowen and James Monsee, who did not participate in the series, were on a smoke break when they had an “a-ha” moment. Could they create a nicotine product that was less harmful than cigarettes? Bowen and Monsee wanted to “erase combustible cigarettes from the face of the earth.” The result was Juul, an electronic cigarette startup meant to save lives that came under federal scrutiny for its own health risks.

Big Vape: The Rise and Fall of Juul is a four-part docuseries on Netflix that chronicles the meteoric rise and subsequent downfall of the e-cigarette company Juul. The series features interviews with key players in the Juul story, including former employees, regulators, and public health experts.
Juul was founded in 2015 by two Stanford graduate students, James Monsees and Adam Bowen, who claimed that their goal was to help adult smokers switch to a less harmful alternative. Juul’s e-cigarettes were sleek and stylish, and they quickly became popular among young people. By 2018, Juul had captured over 70% of the US e-cigarette market.
However, Juul’s popularity came at a price. The company was accused of targeting young people with its marketing campaigns, and its products were linked to a number of health problems, including seizures and lung injuries. In 2019, the US Food and Drug Administration (Fda) launched an investigation into Juul,...

Plenty of haunted, Halloween and holiday options will crop up on Netflix in the month of October. The harvest doesn’t seem too lean despite the almost five-month writers strike that viewers are sure to feel next year, but at least the WGA and AMPTP have reached a deal, and hopefully, SAG-AFTRA is not too far behind. Luckily, Halloween and fall have a classic canon of films and TV shows that stretches back decades, and some of those staple watches will be available through Netflix throughout the month.

There are a few standout new releases on Netflix in October, but it’s a rather quiet month on the world’s most popular streaming service otherwise!
Highlights this month include a brand-new series from Spook Master Mike Flanagan. The Fall of the House of Usher is a gothic tale loosely based on the short story of the same name by Edgar Allan Poe, and tells the story of two extremely unpleasant siblings whose family dynasty ends up going to hell in a handbasket. Before you ask: yes, Rahul Kohli is in it. That’s all that a lot of people need to know here (we’re people).
Elsewhere, Netflix is dropping a few interesting-looking docuseries, including one on football legend David Beckham. It promises to be an “intimate portrait” of Beckham, and the filmmakers were apparently granted unprecedented access to the sportsman and his family while making it.

"I don't think anyone could have anticipated how many children would want this product." Uh huh, sure. Netflix has debuted an official trailer for another tech business documentary series called Big Vape: The Rise and Fall of Juul, arriving for streaming next month. Directed by R.J. Cutler (of the Belushi doc), this is produced by Amblin Television & Time Studios. Big Vape tells the high-drama, rags-to-riches story of the controversial electronic cigarette company Juul which transformed from a scrappy Silicon Valley tech start-up run by two idealistic Stanford graduate students intent on making the world a better place into a multi-billion-dollar tobacco company that sparked an epidemic of youth addiction & lung disease. Perhaps not everyone has heard of Juul before, but they certainly made an impact (for worse) jumping on the vaping bandwagon. Another tale of greed and ignorance, with businessmen trying to make money without realizing the real harm they're doing.
