It’s 1978 in Jenkins, Texas, and, with their parents away, a group of teens decides to play spin the bottle in the basement of one of the group’s houses. The fact she does her best to get them to play elsewhere just makes them more determined to convince her. Once we see the basement, it’s obvious why she didn’t want them down there, it’s full of snakes, pentagrams and other spooky stuff. Needless to say, this does not end well.
In the present day, Cole and his mother Maura have run into rough times since the death of his father. She’s checking herself into a facility to get herself back together, he’s going to make the old family home liveable. But before he does,...

The excitement around Terrifier 3, written and directed by Damien Leone, and starring David Howard Thornton and Lauren Lavera, has horror fans talking. Reports from early screenings claim the opening scene was so disturbing that viewers walked out and some even became ill. However, many believe this could be a marketing strategy to build hype, especially after recent horror films have failed to meet expectations.

What's in a name? A rose by any other would smell as sweet, but Carnival Is Over gets something extra from the original. Os Enforcados, a plural, and drawn from several places. Quartered in more, for the term finds its home in the magisterial and the magical. The Tarot has it as the 12th of its major arcana, a knave and not a knight. The hanged man, and so in plural the hanged.
Not men, carefully. A couple, more. Those names that are said and unsaid include the Scottish play. I leave its name out not from superstition but because it is as misleading as it is illuminating. Like the card its reversals allow new interpretations.

A remake of the Danish horror movie, Blumhouse and Universal released Speak No Evil in theaters over the weekend, and the news is good on both the critical and box office fronts.
Arriving in theaters with an 83% critical score on Rotten Tomatoes, Speak No Evil debuted with $11.3 million in 3,375 theaters at the domestic box office over the weekend.
Worldwide, the film’s current total is $20,873,595.
The reported production budget for Blumhouse’s Speak No Evil is $15 million, so the film should have no problem turning a profit at the box office in the coming weeks.
For the sake of context, Speak No Evil‘s $11.3 million domestic debut is higher than the opening weekends for several of this year’s horror movies, including Abigail, Imaginary, The First Omen, Blink Twice, The Watchers, Tarot, AfrAId, and Lisa Frankenstein. It opened to nearly the same amount as Blumhouse’s Night Swim ($11.7m), which ended with $54 million.

Star Wars Outlaws arrived on consoles last Friday and takes gamers into a Galaxy Far, Far Away for an adventure alongside scoundrel Kay Vess. Along the way, players follow the character as she navigates the Star Wars franchise's seedy underworld, working with or crossing one criminal gang at a time.
Tarot and Star Trek: Section 31 star Humberly González plays Kay in this story set between the events of The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, and does so with both a voice performance and through full-body motion capture.

Aside from IP with mass appeal and superhero stuff, horror is about the only thing that seems to make any money at the box office these days. That's mostly due to the fact horror movies typically don't cost a whole lot to make, leaving more profit on the table at the end of their theatrical runs. But horror isn't just a reliably popular genre at the box office. It also does well on streaming, where we've actually had some pretty decent offerings in recent years.
By far the best example is "His House," which hit Netflix back in 2020 and was even better than your favorite horror movie. Indeed, the film earned a rare 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and proved that Netflix could be much more than a delivery method for middling Kevin Hart projects and instantly forgettable streaming films. Unfortunately, not all the horror that emerges on Netflix is of quite the same standard.

Early in the year, we learned that King Charles and the Princess of Wales (formerly known as Kate Middleton) were admitted to the hospital to undergo planned procedures. Both royals later disclosed their cancer diagnoses and that they were seeking treatment.
With two senior royals out of commission and a new slimmed-down monarchy, many wondered if others in the family would step up to the plate to help out during the trying time with everyone stretched so thin.
Now, a psychic is predicting which royal is going to continue helping out with some duties while someone who used to work for the family believes that person is a natural because they’re so much like the late Queen Elizabeth II.

The Olympics brought in very strong streaming numbers for Peacock during the first full week of the games. For other streamers? Not so much.
No original series or movie made the overall top 10 titles in Nielsen’s streaming rankings for the week of July 29-Aug. 4. That’s a first in the four-year history of the weekly rankings, according to the ratings service. Streaming levels outside of the Olympics “decreased significantly” during the week, Nielsen says.
House of the Dragon, however, continued its strong showing on Max (since the show also airs on HBO, Nielsen considers it an acquired series rather than an original). The Game of Thrones prequel topped the week leading up to its second season finale with 1.31 billion minutes of viewing, up from 1.04 billion a week earlier and its best mark of the season so far.

There’s been so much talk among royal watchers lately about Meghan Markle moving back to the U.K., even though that idea doesn’t seem to make much sense. Why would the duchess, who is originally from California, leave her home state again to move back to her husband‘s homeland where neither of them are popular?
Well, according to a celebrity psychic, the former Suits star actually moving back to the U.K. could be a real possibility when some family drama with one of her loved ones stateside turns into a major news story.
Here’s exactly when Meghan and Prince Harry could return to England.

If you're not up for contributing to "Deadpool & Wolverine" absolutely obliterating the box office, you can always turn to streaming for your entertainment fix. Of course, as we all know by now, doing so is somewhat akin to wading into a dangerous and stagnant swamp from which you might never escape. Everyone has experienced the despair that comes with endlessly scrolling streaming catalogs wondering how, when everything is at our fingertips, there's nothing to watch. Well, now a real hero has arrived in the form of Bruce Willis.
Yes, the man himself may have retired from acting following his 2023 diagnosis of frontotemporal degeneration, but he remains a hero to us all, and is proving his remarkably enduring appeal once again. This time, he's doing just that by cutting through the murk of the Netflix swamp with 2010's "Red," an adaptation of Warren Ellis and Cully Hamner's comic book...

Revenues also slipped 7% from $2.32B to $2.17B for the three months ended June 30, 2024, despite the performances of films such as The Garfield Movie and Bad Boys: Ride or Die and growth in streaming subs.

Paramount is the big winner in home viewing at the moment on VOD platforms and at Netflix. The just-released “A Quiet Place: Day One” is #1 at both iTunes (ranking by transactions) and Fandango (by revenue), adding to its success after grossing $137 million in domestic box office so far.
Meantime, Paramount-produced films currently take three of the top five spots on Netflix’s movie top 10, led by Tom Cruise in two “Jack Reacher” movies, “Never Go Back” at #1 and the original at #5. #2 right now is “Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie,” an offshoot of Paramount-owned Nickelodeon’s “SpongeBob SquarePants” empire, which earlier led the list.
Like Sony, Paramount is happy to take Netflix’s money even if it means removing content from their in-house streamer, Paramount+. The “Jack Reacher” movies are not abnormal — all studios other than Disney have some licensing output deal with the streaming leader. But taking homegrown originals — “Saving Bikini Bottom,...

Until "Longlegs" became the biggest box office surprise of the year, things weren't looking all that great for horror in 2024. A usually reliable genre was seemingly losing some of its appeal, as no one single film was able to repeat the breakout success of 2023's "Talk To Me" or "Skinamarink." Sydney Sweeney's dour nun horror pic "Immaculate" failed to wow critics and the generic yet enjoyable "Night Swim" couldn't quite become the breakout hit Universal were surely hoping for. Neither of these films were out and out financial failures, but it's actually quite difficult to lose a ton of money when your budgets are around the to $9-15 million mark.
Of course, the aforementioned "LongLegs" has proven that horror can still very much succeed at the box office, especially if you deploy one of the best marketing campaigns of recent years to support it. Which, as it happens, is...

Where are all my horror fans? Netflix recently added 10 horror films to its platform on the first of August. While I recommend checking out each new release, the one that should be at the top of your watchlist is the 2024 supernatural horror film Tarot. This movie is criminally underrated, in my opinion, when it really deserves all the love and attention.
Spenser Cohen and Anna Halberg (The Expendables 4) wrote and directed Tarot, making it their feature film directorial debuts. Like most movies nowadays, Tarot is based on another piece of work. It's based on Nicholas Adams' 1992 novel Horrorscope. Although panned by critics, the horror flick still managed to be a box-office success, grossing $49 million worldwide against a budget of $8 million.
Here's how I see it. It's okay to read critic reviews but don't let what someone else has said and their opinions deter you from watching a movie. Who knows,...

With the third installment of their Danza Macabra series, the fine, twisted folks at Severin Films shift focus from the boot of Italy to the Iberian peninsula. This collection spotlights four fascinating Spanish examples of the sort of moody gothic filmmaking that Italian directors like Mario Bava and Antonio Margheriti, not to mention Hammer Films in Britain, helped to popularize for international markets.
Rife with reptilian monsters, vampires, zombified Knights Templar, and even a cameo from Frankenstein and his misbegotten creation, these films vary considerably in tone and approach, ranging from rambling shaggy-dog tales to almost esoteric fables. They also differ in how far they’re willing to go with their respective lashings of sex and violence, growing bolder as the restrictions of the Franco regime lifted after the dictator’s passing in 1975.
Writer-director Miguel Madrid’s schizoid Necrophagous, from 1971, divides its time between two principal storylines that barely cohere in the end.

After a successful box office run, Sony’s Screen Gems’ Tarot card-themed movie Tarot (formerly titled Horrorscope) is heading to streaming next month.
Look for Tarot to arrive on Netflix on August 1, 2024.
The plot sees a group of friends unleashing a curse when they decide to play with a mysterious box of tarot cards. One by one, they come face to face with their fate and end up in a race against death to escape the future foretold in their readings.
Larsen Thompson, Harriet Slater, Adain Bradley, Avantika and Jacob Batalon star in the gateway horror movie Tarot, which was directed by Spenser Cohen & Anna Halberg. The film is very loosely based on a novel by Nicholas Adams.
I wrote in my review for Bloody Disgusting, “Tarot has the makings of a breezy gateway horror movie perfect for sleepovers, though it’s undermined by surface-level characters and storytelling.” Her review continues,...

Their only means of communication are two rapidly depleting battery-operated radio mics, and they are relentlessly pursued by a terrifying new monster known as ‘The Forsaken’. After a disastrous 2023 that saw Prince Harry and Meghan Markle getting mocked on TV, dropped from their Spotify deal, publicly called “f******* grifters,” and landing on the Biggest Losers list, the couple vowed that 2024 would be their “redemption year.”
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have made numerous appearances over the last few months, traveled around the globe, and Harry has been tirelessly promoting the Invictius Games he founded. But now a psychic is revealing that the prince needs a break because he is suffering from “burnout.”
Here’s more on that, plus the “luck” and fortune the astrologer predicts to be coming Meghan’s way.

Vault Comics has teamed up with Fall Out Boy’s Pete Wentz, Hannah Klein (Everything’s Fine), and Lisa Sterle on the graphic novel Dying Inside. Due out this September, this high-profile release includes limited deluxe editions of the graphic novel, an exclusive merch line, and more. I recently caught up with Hannah Klein and Lisa Sterle to discuss their experience working on Dying Inside, from teaming up with Pete Wentz and Vault, to the creative process, the story's main character, Ash, and more!

The year might have gotten off to a slow start at the box office, but things are finally starting to heat up in the back half of 2024. Not only did "Inside Out 2" just cross the $1 billion mark after a stellar $57.4 million third weekend in theaters, but Paramount's "A Quiet Place: Day One" finally delivered the horror hit that we've been waiting for. Indeed, the third installment in the ever-expanding sci-fi franchise delivered a franchise-best domestic opening, taking in an estimated $53 million. But that's just the tip of the iceberg.
Director Michael Sarnoski's "Quiet Place" prequel also took in a stellar $45.5 million overseas, bringing its global total to $98.5 million. With that, it becomes the highest-grossing horror movie of 2024 worldwide after just a single weekend in theaters. The previous record belonged to the South Korean blockbuster "Exhuma," which did $97.6 million worth of business around the world, becoming a modest hit in the U.

Masashi Kishimoto put a lot of thought into creating Naruto as a character. How he thought, what he wrote, if he could even read, and how he spoke; such trivial thoughts were what made his personality so elaborated on and relatable. He felt realistic and established as a protagonist. Years upon years, a bond between him and the fans was formed, one that was both strong and sensitive.

Strong in the sense that fans were constantly in support of Naruto and his position as a much more likable character than many protagonists. When he was first sealed away in Boruto by the hands of Kawaki; they were more than upset, making it clear that sensitivity came towards the mistreatment of their favorite character. It could get so much worse.

Richard Linklater’s “Hit Man” is a certified hit for Netflix, and a rare one: It’s an original film that’s critically acclaimed as well as a popular success.
Meanwhile on PVOD, Warner Bros.’ “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” dominated “Godzilla Minus One” (Toho) not only in theaters (more than three times the gross) but also in home interest.
“Civil War” (A24) is #1 again at iTunes in its fourth week of availability (#2 at Fandango), a remarkably strong showing for a film with a strong but sub-$70 million domestic box office take.
“Hit Man” has led Netflix’s most-watched movie list for 10 days, the first film to do so since 2023 Netflix production “Leave the World Behind” starring Julia Roberts; it held the spot for 13 days last December. Pixar’s “Inside Out 2” leaped to a crushing first place debut at the South Korean box office on its opening weekend.
The American animation film earned $12.3 million from 1.75 million ticket sales between Friday and Sunday, according to data from Kobis, the tracking service operated by the Korean Film Council (Kofic). Over the five days since its Wednesday debut, it accumulated $14.7 million and 2.08 million ticket sales.
Those numbers gave “Inside Out 2” the third-highest opening weekend score this year at the Korean box office and the highest by an imported film. Kobis reports that it commanded an 84% share of the weekend theatrical market.
The numbers are also substantially stronger than those of the predecessor film. In July 2015, “Inside Out” opened in second position with 679,000 ticket sales and a gross of KRW5.34 million ($3.87 million at today’s currency exchange rates). The first film had endurance and became the 13th highest grossing...

Ryan Gosling, the dreamy hunk & laudable talent, has become an emblematic figure of Tinseltown, especially after the colossal hit, Barbie. From the gripping action thriller Drive to the epic crime drama The Place Beyond the Pines, and, of course, to the financial maestro in The Big Short, his artistry spans a kaleidoscope of roles.
And who could overlook that spontaneous quip in The Big Short that had us all convinced of his impromptu prowess? Yes, this 2015 biographical crime comedy-drama, in which Gosling’s brazen remark about his “math specialist”, piqued our interest with its raw spontaneity. Rumors have long circulated that the quip in which his character calls out the Asian guy (Ted Jiang) for doing all of his math was an unscripted genius moment, leaving viewers in awe of Gosling’s acting genius.

Something normal happened at Netflix. “Hit Man,” a well-reviewed film from a top director (Richard Linklater) and a hot star (Glen Powell) in an audience-friendly action title, debuted as #1 on the streamer’s top 10 movie list.
Something very weird happened at the same time. “Godzilla Minus One,” which had a long-delayed appearance in home formats, made it to #1 both at Netflix and on VOD ($5.99 rental) in its first week. By week two, it fell to #6 at Netflix, while dropping from the top spot at iTunes to #7.
Netflix acquired “Hit Man” for $20 million last year when it premiered at Venice and Toronto to great interest. Reviewed (82 Metacritic) at the level or ahead of most of the streamer’s late-year awards-bait films, the action comedy about a moonlighting professor working undercover for New Orleans police has been #1 for the last three days. Unlike most Netflix originals, does it have staying power?

A rumor has recently surfaced regarding Amazon’s MGM Studio and Game Workshop’s collaboration for the Warhammer 40,000 TV series by Henry Cavill, that it might be facing turbulence and the future of the show has never looked so uncertain.
After backing out of the disastrous TV adaptation of The Witcher, Cavill shifted his focus towards getting the Warhammer 40k series on floors by joining it as an actor and one of the executive producers.

Amazon’s MGM studios were set to back it up along with Game Workshop. However, due to problems regarding Amazon’s writing team, the project appears to be on the verge of getting shelved and Cavill stands helpless in front of the giants of a studio.
Henry Cavill’s 22 years of experience is not enough for Amazon

Despite big stars such as Henry Cavill and Ryan Gosling having blockbuster releases this year, the first half of 2024 seems to be a lackluster year for Hollywood. The industry has seen many sure-shot films bomb at the box office this year. While Dune: Part Two remains the highest-grossing film of the year, it was released in March.
Films such as The Fall Guy and The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, which were touted to be huge hits have all taken a huge loss at the box office, making studios reconsider their strategies. Making it worse is the success of small-budget films such as Tarot, which has become the year’s most profitable film with a $45 million box office against an $8 million budget.

Updated: Sony’s Bad Boys: Ride or Die pummeled pre-weekend opening projections, coming in with a $104.6M global bow, including $48.6M from the international box office. While the overseas debut is slightly off 2020’s Bad Boys for Life which did $50.3M in like-for-like offshore markets at today’s exchange rates, that film had strong legs. Either way, Ride or Die‘s start gave some much needed oomph to summer turnstiles. Its launch is 58% bigger than Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.
The Will Smith/Martin Lawrence reteam from directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah was driven overseas by Europe with $19.3M across the region. It set new regional records for the Bad Boys franchise in Latin America and the Middle East with $10M and $9.5M, respectively.
Of the 60 markets released this session, the UK leads with $4.9M (+ 31% over Furiosa). Mexico was next with $4.2M, followed by Germany at $3.7M (2.5x...
