I love me some damn dirty apes, and I’m not alone. Ever since the first Planet of the Apes movie in 1968, it’s been one of Hollywood’s most consistent (on a quality level) franchises. Think about it. Has there ever really been a lousy Planet of the Apes movie? Not really. Yet, it’s often unheralded when we talk about the great franchises. So, let’s look at the series as a whole, with this Planet of the Apes movies ranked list (from worst to best). And don’t worry – you’ll get to have your say tomorrow with a poll I’ll be publishing, so check back for that.

The Dead Don’t Hurt (Viggo Mortensen)
Though The Dead Don’t Hurt gradually becomes Vivienne’s story as Holger disappears to fight, his presence still defines the film in strange ways. While Mortensen certainly looks younger than 65 and I’m not one of those people who busts out a calculator to determine what is or isn’t an appropriate age-gap relationship, Mortensen casting himself opposite Krieps in the romantic (even action hero) lead role he’s clearly too old for (beyond maybe financing requirements) reeks of ego. Maybe this wouldn’t matter as much if he dramatized these proceedings in a way more compelling than just its interesting conceptual ideas of immigrants in the west going through the passage of time together.

Fresh off his latest BAFTA win for The Sixth Commandment, Timothy Spall’s next project has been revealed.
The Harry Potter star is leading Death Valley with Welsh actress Gwyneth Keyworth (Black Mirror) for the BBC.
Written and created by Paul Doolan (Mammoth) and set in Wales, Death Valley follows the unlikely crime-solving partnership between eccentric national treasure John Chapel (Spall), a retired actor and star of hit fictional detective TV show Caesar, and disarming detective sergeant Janie Mallowan (Keyworth). Thrown together by the murder of John’s neighbor, John and Janie are an odd, yet hilarious duo with opposing instincts, and each week they get to the bottom of gripping murders.
“I’m really looking forward to teaming up with the brilliant Gwyneth Keyworth and the fantastically talented team of creatives and technicians on this new and unique comedy drama,” said Spall.
BBC Studios is producing and distributing, and filming will begin next month.

The failure of the Marvel Cinematic Universe to kick on and repeat the exploits it once made fueled concerns about Disney Studios’ outlook. The last thing you want is for your leading franchise to drop the ball. But the studio can put the ghosts of the MCU to bed (for now at least) and celebrate a success that acts as a much-needed succor to the team – the blockbuster opening week of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.

The mighty Planet of the Apes franchise ruled again at the box office, with the movie earning a mighty $56.5 million domestically (according to ComScore), which puts it right in line with the previous openings of Rise of the Planet of the Apes ($54.8 million) and War for the Planet of the Apes ($56.2 million). Dawn of the Planet of the Apes made a lot more at $72 million, but times have changed, and now a $50 million-plus opening is cause for celebration at the House of Mouse, with Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes the first solid box office win for Disney (who are releasing through 20th Century Films) in a while. This is much more than the $40 million we predicted earlier this week.

Andy Serkis was absolutely incredible as Caesar in the relaunch of the Planet of the Apes franchise. Throughout the three movies, the actor made the audience connect with the highly intelligent chimpanzee. Fans were absolutely heartbroken when Andy Serkis’ Caesar met his end in War for the Planet of the Apes. Needless to say, the actor’s portrayal of the character was a huge reason behind the success of the films.

The actor gave his all to the character, so much so that he unexpectedly took the method acting route when it came to bringing Koba to life.

[Editor’s note: Massive spoilers for “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” below.]
Apes rule in “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,” kicking off director Wes Ball’s post-Caesar saga 300 years later. Wētā FX leveraged its tech from the previous “Apes” trilogy and the Oscar-winning “Avatar: The Way of Water” for greater photorealism in their performance capture animation and VFX. This is important because the apes are chattier, and there are more CG action set pieces (33 minutes are entirely digital — a franchise first). It adds up to possibly earning the franchise the VFX Oscar that it’s been denied.
After achieving great on-set facial capture in the rain and snow for director Matt Reeves’ “Dawn” and “War” films, Wētā embraced more expansive environments for “Kingdom” along with more active and expressive apes. In the film, simians have begun developing their own civilization in villages spread throughout the overgrown Pacific Northwest, with decrepit skyscrapers in the distance.

This article contains spoilers for "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes."
In 1968's "Planet of the Apes," astronaut George Taylor (Charlton Heston) and his companions find themselves traveling from 1972 to the year 3978 during their voyage, initially assuming they've traveled through space as well as time. Famously, Taylor finds this assumption woefully incorrect, discovering that a malfunctioning spacecraft took him right back to his point of origin: an Earth, but 2,006 years in the future, where humanity has all but destroyed itself with nuclear war, and a race of sentient apes have risen to become the world's dominant species.
While that original film has arguably been surpassed in quality by its subsequent sequels and the modern reboot saga, its cultural impact cannot be matched; everything from its visual iconography and immortal twist ending is firmly ingrained within pop culture. That's a big reason why the "Planet of the Apes" films, even...

Grossing over $2 billion worldwide since its inception in 1968, the Planet of the Apes franchise has turned out to be one of the most successful ones in Hollywood. Based on French author Pierre Boulle’s 1963 novel La Planète des singes, the title has released a total of nine movies, expanding its lore, with a tenth one, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes starring The Witcher actress Freya Allan in a leading role and set some 300 years after the events of the last outing.
A rough outline of all the movies involves humans, intelligent apes, and some sort of conflict. However, the dystopian setting where mankind comes down on its knees to face a brutal twist of fate sets the narrative in different orders for the different iterations. Someone who has just embarked on watching, or one who wishes to refresh their memory of the events of the films, need not watch all nine of them.

With the release of The Fall Guy this weekend, the summer movie season is finally upon us. While it’s a thinner summer than usual due to the dual writer and actors strike bringing movies to a standstill for much of 2023, there should still be a lot of stuff worth checking out, even if the summer seems short of anything that can aspire to Barbenheimer levels of success. Yesterday, we teased some of our most anticipated horror movies, so now we’re tackling the rest of the blockbusters in our 2024 summer movie preview!

“Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” director Wes Ball thinks it’s high time that Wētā FX got its due for its innovative simian performance capture animation. So he intends to peel back the curtain for the first time on the upcoming Blu-ray release. As first reported on the “Ape Nation” podcast, Ball will offer the entire movie, which takes place 300 years after the reign of Andy Serkis’ Caesar, as a bonus feature in a before- and-after comparison of raw dailies and completed performance capture animation and VFX.
“I think VFX is too much maligned…when it’s a tool like anything else,” Ball told IndieWire. “So I think to show the absolute peak of artistry and what these artists actually do is not some button that says, ‘Make Apes.’ These are true storytellers at work here. I want to show that off and celebrate it.”

The apes on horseback was a clever idea and looked very reminiscent of the original 1968 film Planet Of The Apes.

Jonathan Nolan’s Fallout adaptation is a success for many reasons, the least of all being its unique sense of identity separate from the games despite being true to the source material in every respect. It is this individuality of the Amazon original series that allows some room for creative liberty while Nolan and his writers’ room build a megalomaniacal post-apocalyptic world spread over the vast wasteland of America.

"Planet of the Apes" has consistently been a science-fiction franchise (and one of the best we have), but the movies come in different sci-fi flavors. The original was a time travel story (even if Charlton Heston's lead George Taylor took the long way around via cryogenesis), culminating in the shocking ending right out of "The Twilight Zone" where Taylor discovers the shattered Statue of Liberty and realizes this ape-ruled world was Earth all along.
The third movie, "Escape from the Planet of the Apes," saw the talking apes travel back to the 1970s when humans reigned. Subsequent films filled in the timeline, depicting the uprising that led to the planet of the apes. The new films (the so-called Caesar trilogy) have done the reverse, starting at the beginning and taking the route of contemporary speculative fiction. Things have only come full circle with the fourth film, "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,...

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is just over a month away, and it looks like Wes Ball’s addition to the franchise is stacking up to be a significant hit. The last three Planet of the Apes movies did a good job reinventing the franchise for the 21st century, with the last two instalments, directed by Matt Reeves, especially acclaimed. While the Caesar trilogy has come to an end, the new film is set to follow the same continuity, only taking place generations later. In many ways, Kingdom seems more in line with the original series, with talking apes, led by Owen Teague’s Noa, at war with a primitive human society.
According to Deadline, the film is tracking for a $54-61 million dollar opening, which would put it on track with the last film, War for the Planet of the Apes, which opened with $56 million. It’ll...

Like most areas of the entertainment industry outside of acting, casting and costuming, television writing was generally one big boys club until women began making (incremental) inroads during the 1990s. There were trailblazers like "I Love Lucy" scribe Madelyn Pugh, but that trail was walked far too infrequently for far too many years.
Anyone who possessed a conscience knew this was unacceptable, which is why it's disappointing that a politically progressive (particularly for his era) writer like Rod Serling never made a concerted effort to work at least one female writer into "The Twilight Zone" mix during the series' five seasons (which stretched from 1959 to 1964). To be fair, Serling did adapt the work of women for certain episodes; in fact, a tale that many consider the show's finest half-hour, "Time Enough at Last," was based on a short story by sci-fi/fantasy writer Lynn Venable. But he never managed to...

After the newest "Planet of the Apes" trilogy wrapped up in 2017 with director Matt Reeves' stunning, Biblical epic "War for the Planet of the Apes," fans were left with two pressing questions. One, why the heck wasn't Andy Serkis ever recognized by the Oscars for his genuinely award-worthy performance as Caesar? Secondly, would the actor ever return for future movies down the line, despite the fact that Caesar meets a heartbreaking but poignant end by the conclusion of the film? There's precedent within this franchise for actors once again taking the lead role in subsequent sequels as a different character, of course -- look no further than Roddy McDowall starring in the original "Planet of the Apes" and "Escape from the Planet of the Apes" as the chimpanzee Cornelius before coming back in "Conquest" and eventually "Battle" to play the role of Cornelius' son and Caesar.

Call it the summer of Alden Ehrenreich. After going toe-to-toe with no less a talent than Robert Downey, Jr. in "Oppenheimer," reminding audiences that the "Hail, Caesar!" actor has far more to offer than a Harrison Ford impression in "Solo: A Star Wars Story," Ehrenreich is back to further flex his range as a performer in "Fair Play."
Of course, he's not doing it alone. The thriller, which first debuted at this year's Sundance Film Festival and has since been picked up by Netflix, also features a ferocious leading performance by "Bridgerton" star Phoebe Dynevor as Emily. As a young and happy (and horny!) couple working at the same high-powered New York City hedge fund, they've agreed to keep their relationship under wraps -- not least because their fraternization violates company policy. The private/professional life arrangement seems to be working just fine ... until Ehrenreich's Luke is rumored to be up for a sought-after promotion.

On October 26, 1997, Tower of Terror aired as ABC’s The Wonderful World of Disney feature presentation, initiating a trend that would go on to shift the paradigm that had long existed between Disney’s immersive theme park attractions and their successful movie slate. The line between rides and movies was blurring and soon the path that carried the silver screen to the realm of reality would no longer be one-way.
Twenty six years later, the studio is on the cusp of their twelfth ride adaptation and their second big screen attempt at a blockbuster Haunted Mansion movie. Far removed from the made-for-tv Steve Guttenberg starring spook fest that served as a gateway horror flick to so many young and impressionable minds, these multimedia ticket drivers have left behind low budget simplicity in lieu of multi-million dollar CGI driven set pieces and A-list casts. While audiences are quick to judge a movie or television show based off of a single viewing, most people fail to understand and empathize with the fact that nobody goes through life without making mistakes. So, since fans can relate to such a fact, it shouldn’t be a large surprise when franchises as massive as the MCU occasionally put out a movie that underperforms or includes a character that didn’t meet their potential. With M.O.D.O.K in Ant-Man & the Wasp: Quantumania getting a mixed reaction from fans, now’s a good time to check in on other water Marvel villains.

Marie Tussaud, the founder of legendary wax museum Madame Tussauds, is going to be the subject of a new series. Entitled "Madame!," the project is brainchild of Andy Serkis, famous for playing Gollum in the Lord of the Rings series and Caesar in the Planet of the Apes franchise. Serkis's production company, Imaginarium Productions, is codeveloping the series with distribution company Newen Connect.
"Madame!" will tell the story of Tussaud, who was born in 1761 in France to a family of public executioners and learned the art of making wax models from local anatomist Philippe Curtius, who employed her mother as a housekeeper. During the Enlightenment, Tussaud worked as an art tutor at Versailles for Louis XVI's sister, though during the French Reign of Terror, she was nearly guillotined after being perceived as a royal sympathizer. Russell Jay Kagan passed away on March 27 after a brief battle with cancer. Kagan, who died peacefully, surrounded by his friends and family, was 65. A pioneer in the International Television Distribution world who helped introduce international co-productions, Emmy winner Kagan, whose career spanned four decades, was a fixture at Napte and Mip/Mipcom and was often referred to as the “Mayor of Cannes”.
“We’ve lost a great, respected, loving colleague whose spirit, generosity of heart, knowledge and insight were second to none and available to many,” said Armando Nunez, President and CEO of CBS Global Distribution Group. “I’ve known Russ for close to 40 years and will miss my trusted friend who also acted as consigliere to so many. Chasin formed her production company early last year after ending a 26-year run as the Los Angeles head of prolific Working Title Films. Her producing credits include Baby Driver, The Theory of Everything and Les Miserables, and she exec produced the Gary Oldman-starrer Darkest Hour, Victoria & Abdul, Mary Queen of Scots, and the upcoming Netflix series Armistead Maupin’s Tales of the City. Chasin’s first-look television deal is at Anonymous Content.
Scott Stuber, head of Netflix’s film group, grew up with Chasin when he was a top executive at Universal, where Working Title partners Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner have long had their first-look deal.

It was a year of triumphant returns—for Barry Jenkins, Alfonso Cuarón, Paul Schrader, Joel and Ethan Coen, Steve McQueen, Pawel Pawlikowski, Spike Lee, Marielle Heller, Hirokazu Kore-eda, Orson Welles (!), and, of course, Paddington. And, it was a time in which new(ish) voices asserted their authority. Consider the likes of Boots Riley, Chloé Zhao, Paul Dano (and co-screenwriter Zoe Kazan), Ari Aster, and, yes, Bradley Cooper. Any cinemagoer who calls 2018 a disappointment simply was not looking hard enough.
Interestingly, my own top ten list features four foreign language films and two “kids” films. These categorizations are flawed, of course. Language makes no difference here, and anyone who considers Paddington 2 and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse to be kid-only movies is certainly close-minded. So let’s dispense with the categories and merely say that listed here are 10 gems (and five honorable mentions) that struck me as bold, original, breathtaking films...

Attention Harrison Ford: You don't have to lose your shit. Alden Ehrenreich holds up his end of the bargain playing the young version of Han Solo, your iconic, smartass space cowboy. Yes, the movie ride delivered by Solo: A Star Wars Story is more mild than wild, a pleasant way to pass the time instead of a game-changer. And this thinly-sketched, stand-alone origin story doesn't quite wipe the grin off Han's face – it's too timid for that. But Ehrenreich has the acting chops (he's brilliant in the Coen brothers comedy,...

After a brief cameo in 2014’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” and another in 2015’s “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” Josh Brolin will make a full-fledged and villainous appearance as Thanos in this week’s blockbuster movie “Avengers: Infinity War.” The film is the latest in the popular series of films based on the Marvel comic books.
It was over 30 years ago that the teenage Brolin made his film debut in “The Goonies” but it is only in the last 10 years or so that he has risen to the top of the list of respected actors and become a full-out movie star. As Brolin himself joked on an episode of “Inside the Actor’s Studio” he got everything wrong for the first half of his career and only recently started getting it right. Under Executive director Roger Durling, the Santa Barbara International Film Festival has flourished by riding the awards season wave via starry onstage interviews with Oscar contenders.
Every year, screenwriters, directors and producers promote their causes on panels, and the likes of Jeff Bridges (a local), Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling, Denzel Washington, and Casey Affleck and Michelle Williams submit to in-depth tributes from Leonard Maltin and Pete Hammond, among others. This year I had the pleasure of a wide-ranging conversation with Best Actress Oscar-nominee Isabelle Huppert. (See video excerpts below.)
And Saturday, the festival wound up its 32nd edition by handing out its annual jury prizes. All eleven are listed below.
The Audience Choice Award went to Yonatan Nir’s “My Hero Brother,” which also took home the Best Documentary Award. It tells the story of a group of young people with Down syndrome who embarking on an arduous trek through the Himalayas.

Universal’s “Scarface” remake just got a little help from their friends, Joel and Ethan Coen. According to Deadline, the Coen Brothers helped polish the script for the studio.
Additionally, the gangster film’s release date was also announced: August 10, 2018.
Set to be a modern story about the rise and fall of a Latino gangster, previous reports stated that Diego Luna was attached to star. Though nothing has been confirmed.
As of now, Universal is on the hunt for a director after Antoine Fuqua had to depart the project in order to focus on “The Equalizer” sequel. According to The Hollywood Reporter, “Hell or High Water” helmer David MacKenzie and “Patriots Day’s” Pete Berg are front-runners to direct the film. Filmmaker siblings Joel and Ethan Coen are set to unveil Netflix Western movie The Ballad of Buster Scruggs.
The Ballad of Buster Scruggs was first teased as a television event series that would put the signature dark humor and idiosyncratic action of directors Joel and Ethan Coen through a Western lens. Certainly, the idea of the sibling visionaries behind film classics such as No Country for Old Men, O Brother, Where Art Thou?, The Big Lebowski, Fargo and Hail, Caesar! taking a peak television plunge was auspicious news.
…However, there’s something you need to know about that whole TV series hoopla. Surprise! The Ballad of Buster Scruggs will instead arrive as the latest Coen Brothers movie, and not as a television series, as everyone was led to believe for nearly two years. Specifically, it will be a six-part Western anthology film.

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of film and TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Monday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best film in theaters right now?”, can be found at the end of this post.)
Warning: This article reveals critical plot plots from “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.”
Of all the surprises seen in “Rogue One,” none was more unexpected — or more divisive — than the return of Grand Moff Tarkin, whose presence might have been less of a shock if actor Peter Cushing hadn’t died in 1994.
While this isn’t the first time that a movie has used technology to bring someone back from the grave, the prominence of Tarkin’s role in “Rogue One” has rekindled the debate over digitally manipulating deceased performers. For this week’s survey, we asked our panel of critics a question (or two...

Will it be third time’s the charm for Jim Carrey and “Saturday Night Live”? We shall see as the show returns from its first hiatus this season. When Carrey last hosted in January 2011, only five current cast members were still around. That offers up a lot of new comedic combinations tonight. Plus, as Carrey looks to plug his upcoming film “Dumb And Dumber To,” don’t be surprised to see Jeff Daniels pop by, hopefully in full Will McAvoy mode. (After all, “The Newsroom” is already plenty funny, and sometimes even intentionally so.) As per usual, I’ll assign grades to each sketch while liveblogging all the action. As per usual, I urge you not to get bent out of shape should these grades not align with your own. If you did, well, that would be super strange and kind of boring. See you at 11:30 pm Est when things kick off properly.

Films with great women’s roles aren’t always great films. Films with poor female representation aren’t necessarily bad films. But poorly written female roles will always be a problem for cinema so long as they continue to persist. The damsel in distress. Angel-whore. The token girl. Trophy wives. Mother, daughter, sister. The unconditional love interest. These are among the popular clichés most frequently applied to female characters as they’re written on the page. Some films are so desperate for conflict that they just keep going to the well without altering the mold. Have women not earned the right by now to play more villains, complicated lovers, a-holes, The Best Friends, soldiers, comic reliefs or leads? Can a woman be sexy in a film and still have a great role? Yes. Give her agency. Can a woman support other characters but still have a great role? Yes. Keep her vital.
